Mulan really stops being a musical after the massacre on the village. It's definitely highlights the somberness that war should provoke while still allowing the movie to be a comedy.
Wherefore art thou me Most of the comedy after that point is Mushu’s one liners, and even those are toned down until Shan Yu is Katy Perry’d.
@@jbcatz5 saying someone has been Katey Perry'd is my new favorite thing 😂
I just now realized that Mulan does have the highest kill count of any Disney protagonist.
All things considered it is a war lol
But which kill count is bigger? The deaths of all the Huns or SPOILERS: the deaths of all those creatures from the Moors in "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil"?
Does she? I don't know of any examples that particularly contradict that, but I think a Game Theory on it would be amusing.

“The little girl will be missing her doll. We must return it to her.” Only Shan Yu can make that line sound terrifying.
He was awesome.
He is definitely one of the best Disney animated villains, and a big part of it is that he is treated 100% seriously throughout the entire film. No jokes, no songs, no dumb sidekick annoying him. Just pure, near-emotionless violence. (Even if it is almost entirely off-screen.) I'm not saying that all Disney villains need to be like that, but in this case it lets him be the scariest foe in the canon.

@@CelticVictory Reflection is overrated.
Two of those were GREAT songs.
I actually like a detail with the songs and the structure of the film where all the songs are present up until the burnt village. This gives a contrast between the soldiers' fantasy of war and the *real* stakes of the war. The horror witnessed is so extreme, they can never go back to how things were.
That’s an interesting point.
that's actually a really good point, especially considering how the last song gets cut off the moment they enter the village.
I also like that ALL the songs are either about gender roles or identity. It's a completely different structure to what all the other Disney musicals have. Only True to your heart is awful.
Very true! I also feel that having less songs allows for quality over quantity, and I think that Mulan struck a good balance in that regard. I especially love the songs, "Be a Man," and, "Reflections," because the lyrics and overall presentation are so memorable and poignant.

1:23 "Most princesses need a man" show Cinderella, the only princess who just wanted go to a party and NEVER mention she wants a man.
Snow White never asked for a man, either, until that poisoned apple (which was not her damn fault). Neither did Sleeping Beauty - she just "needed a man" to kiss her because of that stupid curse.
Well, not quite true, Aurora was dreaming of meeting Mr. Right beforehand, she was just p... off that she wasn't allowed to be with him and was supposed to marry some prince, not knowing that they were the same person. And Snow White is singing in the well that she wants a prince. Cinderella is the only one of the classic princesses, who didn't really care for romance, she just wanted a better life and some fun at the ball.
@@swanpride It's not about caring for romance, it's about needing the man to be saved, if Cinderella never met the prince at the ball she probably would be in the same situation till some other man or death. Basically, needing something and wanting something are different things.
@@bluester7177 I'd argue it wasn't the prince Cinderella needed, it was her fairy godmother. The fairy godmother was the one who decided Cinderella needed to go to the ball, and created the chain reaction ending with the marriage. Without the fairy godmother, Cinderella would still be at the house, even more miserable than before. Now, personally if we're to focus on need, I think the godmother should've given Cinderella a one way ticket out of town to a place she'd be happy in. Although, now that I think about it, she's killing two birds with one stone by satisfying Cinderella's want for the ball, and indirectly (or directly?) pairing her up with the prince, with the prince being nothing more than a means to an end to remove Cinderella from her home.
Estelle Vu Exactly! And, in the end, she didn’t need either the fairy godmother or the prince to save her. She saved herself, with some help from her friends

I’ve never looked at it that way. If intentional, it was a good choice in showing how serious war is.

They didn't seem to care enough about the songs to do that; just "going through the motions", so to speak.
Cho Vue They have to give this Honest Trailers some type of award or something, for a moment I totally forgot the virus and couldn’t stop laughing
The only one i thought that didn't was the last song.
There's legal issues that keep even a parody song from being too close to the original
Never thought you'd see the day when what?
Sadly you have COMPLETLY missed the point of the movie. The point is that after Mulan tries to act like the woman society expects her to be, she tries to act like a man and ALSO fails. It is only when she says "screw this" and takes advantage of the abilities she has (her smarts) in order to climb the pole and later defeat the Huns, that she can really succeed, by being herself instead of trying to fit into some sort of idiotic stereotype.
Sadly, you completely missed the point of an Honest Trailer.
Oh, I understand the point...it's to do some friendly ribbing of the movie. But the joke only works, if they really hit the weak spots. And in a lot of ways, they didn't. They left so much one can make fun off out (like the fact, that the movie has a perfect ending and then ruins it with a bunch of chickens and a truly awful pop song, or the fact the Ming-Na Wen is the only actress who has a Disney franchise triple, or the fact Mushu's voice is completely out of place) and went for things which are truly a stretch. The moment you are wondering if they even watched the movie is the moment the Honest Trailer failed.
@@swanpride, this is Honest Trailers, not Cinema Sins. They might have those in the deleted scenes when the Honest Trailers Commentary airs, but they try to have fun more than point out every wrong thing. The tone they use for children's movies in particular is usually more lighthearted.
Exactly, it's not Cinema Sins, I expect better from Honest Trailer. Their best trailer are pointing stuff out which isn't just funny but also insightful. I like them, for their spot on observation. And this trailer was mostly lacking them (aside from the fact that Mulan kills a LOT of people that was a good one).
@@swanpride What do you mean a Disney Franchise triple?
The commenters win here. This was not your best work. You did not bring honor to your families.
Out of all the comments, I found yours. :) Hi Sarah!
Oh, and Pat Morita also wasn't Chinese. But all that really matters is that the actors not be white, right?
The point is very few important roles go to minorities in the first place, so a movie that naturally would expect to have roles for Chinese actors, ironically still goes to mostly white or non Chinese actors.
@@BishtrainerTai16 It is a VOICE ACTING ROLE, if they were using heavy Asian accents that would one thing, but they don't. Its not a literal role. If the voice actor is good and can show proper inflection that is what matters in cartoons.
Despite its inaccuracies and changing tone, Mulan was one of my favorite Disney movies growing up and she remains one of my favorite Disney "princesses" to this day (along with Belle and Rapunzel).
D.J. Rose You are a true connoisseur and I salute you. 👍🏽

"She will kill alot more dudes with snow than Elsa ever dreamed of" 😂😂
"good lord Disney these were real people, not the Urukai" 😂😂😂😂😂😂
"Good Lord, Disney, these were real people, not the Uruk-hai" 🤣
To be fair the hun were pretty terrible.
Raphael Miller still humans though.
@@gemini88miller The chinese were not better, you know? Both of them were war crime machines, but the hun were a little more powerful warriors so they look like the villain.
Please say: "A doughnut hole in the doughnut's hole. But we must look a little closer. And when we do, we see that the doughnut hole has a hole in its center - it is not a doughnut hole at all but a smaller doughnut with its own hole, and our doughnut is not a hole at all!"
Midnight Movie Madness isn’t that from Knives Out
@@acairconditioning5666 Correct
Er....yes
And please say it in the voice of Foghorn leghorn.
That monologue took the movie from a 6/10 to an 8/10 for me.
im really glad that one of the screen junkies' most controversial takes is calling make a man out of you a bathroom break. ha. commenters, you all have my respect. (btw i think it wasnt necessarily the song they were calling out, but more of the montage itself) but honestly i don't think it was just such a simple montage where you could skip it and not miss anything important. they show an actual scene where mulan is given an out and could potentially leave safely and go back home and pretend none of this happened but she takes one look at the obstacle none of them had been able to overcome and SHE's the only one who's there working her butt off to try and figure it out because she wants to prove to herself that she CAN do it that she can survive here. and mulan with her creative thinking that she's shown from literally the very start of the film (did yalls see that chicken feeding mechanism she made that was so simple yet ingenious?) was able to figure out how to use the weights that were dragging her down, to her advantage and they were what made her succeed in overcoming the obstacle. her being her, wanting to prove herself and her unique way of thinking. ALL of that was the crucial point and highlight of the montage. so sure, it could be broken down into she turns into a man at the end, but i'd argue there's more to the journey of that montage than meets the eye. (ps im so glad yalls did the music, since yalls werent doing them lately (tangled), i think the last one was for the greatest showman?, i considered it a possibility plus you guys kept on saying in other stuff that there were only 2 songs in mulan but ahh im so glad yalls finally took note of the other ones. yalls have my respect for that)
at least "ill make a man out of you" had more character development then the whole live action movie did I just jump on the "hate" on that criticism bandwagon... yes
Eh, this kinda fell flat. One does not simply insult “I’ll Make a Man Out of You.”
It "fell flat" because it made fun of something you like. Grow some backbone.
Nobody cares!
@@EnclosedPoolArea One can have a backbone and still think this one fell flat, which it did.
Enclosed Pool Area no, I’d be totally interested in a good burn of I’ll make a man out of you, but this just wasn’t it
I don't think it fell flat, it was fun, but that song is indeed special and NOT the time to take a leak lol. I love the crap out of all training montages and their songs though
the disrespect towards Cinderella!!!! my girl never asked for any random man she wanted to go to a party!! she wanted to get away from her abusive family!!

Ok but honestly, how can you roast Mulan? That movie is an actual masterpiece
There is a difference between stereotypical and racist.
Whats the differences
@@051lando Racism requires hatred or the belief that one group is superior to another based on skin tone. Stereotyping makes broad generalizations about a group, that does not require hatred or bigotry.
Yes! Agreed!!
