  • I've _never_ met or heard of a woman who's childhood dream was to "become the leader she knows she can be." The ironic thing is, Snow White was the movie that began Disney, and now its going to be the movie that ends it.

    @lasercraft32@lasercraft325 ай бұрын
    • I guess you never met me haha In all seriousness yeah I get your point and this is indeed saddening to see, especially that they’ll show ‘’being a leader and being empowered’’ with the pettiest stuff possible instead of showing an actual capable, ambitious female leader or warrior. Mulan did a great job for that, but I know this movie won’t, and it’s sad. If they really want to show a woman capable of leadership, make a movie about Wu Zetian, the dragon empress, or Sitt Al Mursk, a female leader of the Abbasid Caliphate itself, or take inspiration in them and show a woman becoming something, a good and caring leader, while also knowing how to be could and tough when she needs to be, not just some petty bitch that ‘’girlbosses’’ but saying no to boys about petty stuff or twerking in camera.

    • @@elgrandefleau7359honestly I don’t see why so many people want a Wu Zetian movie/story for a strong female character. The way I see it it’s like the message of “you can be a strong leader, no matter who you are” and have the protagonist be a mafia boss or a gang lord. Can’t really see past the chopping off a woman’s hands off and drowning her in wine thing.

And you need to reconstruct yourself as a person in order to shape that character role. All you need to do is put in live people, make adjustments to sets and clothing. The story is classic so you should not change anything. Making the movie should have been easy. • Well, the issue lies in JUST THAT! I think Dan Olsen put it best when describing Nostalgia Critic’s The Wall and the creator Doug Walker. (Sorry if I sound a little pretentious) To kinda steal that quote, Rachel Zegler and the writers want to make good movies. They want to be artists, but they can’t. Because they are fundamentally incurious people. Judging by how they only describe the original as being “a schlocky love story” and not understanding the themes of making due with what you have and how you can always rely on people who really care about you, they don’t seem to care about how other people think or feel, and their idea basically boils down to “Let’s make her an independent woman and how she’ll be a special, powerful female to rise up against the patriarchy. But I hate to break it to these people, but if that’s the movie you’re making, then that’s only, ya know, like every. Other. F**king. Remake. Every Disney remake with a female protagonist has to be about how she’s strong, and how “she don’t need no man!”. Let’s run down the list… Beauty and The Beast remake- Some people believe that because Belle and the Beast became so kind and caring towards each other, that she developed Stockholm Syndrome. In order to “rectify” this, they changed her character and completely ruined their chemistry with each other. Aladdin remake- I’ll admit, I enjoyed how they developed her and her father more. But whenever she sings the song at the end, it comes of as very disingenuous because it’s all about how she won’t let people put her down (which is a good message). BUT, it comes off as disingenuous because about a couple seconds later, she relents when Jafar holds her father hostage and then she’s immediately magically imprisoned by Jafar. The Lion King remake- This one wasn’t as bad about it, but when Simba and Nala were young, she is portrayed as being the one reluctant to go to the elephant graveyard (which is unlike the original, where Nala was just as willing as Simba to go to the elephant graveyard). This hurts the plot because in the original, when they become adults and reunite, we see the character growth of her accepting responsibility whereas Simba hasn’t. In the remake, that is lost. As I said, not as bad, but it still does hurt the plot. Mulan- This is basically like The Lion King one, except way worse. In the original, she started off as kinda klutzy and not good at fighting. Then she does the brave thing and takes her father’s place in the war even though she doesn’t know what she’s doing. Throughout the course of the movie, she struggles and becomes stronger because of it. But in the new remake, she is shown to already be a strong fighter when she was just a child and thus destroys her entire character arc. (I haven’t seen all of the Disney remakes. I think that’s a good thing, but if there are any other examples, I’ll be glad to hear it, and if you disagree, that’s perfectly fine. At the end of the day, this is only my opinion after all.)

  • As a German, this is just depressing. Snow White is such a sweet and caring person who is incredibly young and naive in a cruel world. Her story isn't about love or empowering, it's about kindness and it's about friendship. Her description, to be pale as snow, is an essential part of the message as it symbolizes death and how she still deserves a happy end. The dwarfs are mythological creatures who learn to love her for her kindness and warmth, and they save her many times when the queen comes to kill her. There are different versions when it comes to the fairy tale's ending, and the point isn't even true love and how deep prince Philip is, it's about how after all those struggles, Snow White gets to live happily with a kind man and her friends and the queen is punished for her crimes. This is such a sweet fairy tale that highlights the warm and caring features of femininity. Of course, this is a very particular feminine stereotype, it's a medieval German fairy tale after all. It's OK to be warm and caring and to want to be compassionate and warm without the ambition of leadership. True feminism should empower women to live the way they are happy, that includes their most nurtering and compassionate side. Hollywood's continuous ridiculing of our fairy tales is sickening and revolting.

    • I love Cruella. It is such a fun movie and feels fresh to watch, and the actors play their roles really well. There is true character development with Cruella. She starts off in a precarious place, learning compassion and love though she has the propensity to be cruel because of who her birth mother is, and then slowly we see her grow into a confident, creative person finding who she really is in her heart, and if that is to be a villain to another villain, and then take their place, she damn well wasn't going to do it by being a "girl boss", but instead through her own ingenuity and help from friends who she comes to see as family. This movie gives the reason of why and how she becomes the Cruella we already know in a way that is entertaining and engaging. It was so much fun watching her best her enemy with the help of others, which were men, and overcome those obstacles to reach her full potential. Disney needs to do more movies like this. With true character development that is entertaining to watch.

And they even changed with her influence (like Grumpy becoming more kind). Is it bad to tell kids that even when your situation is awful, there's hope? there's people out there who can and will protect and love you? That's it's okay to ask for help? It gets red of the original aspect of the film. I get so annoyed when they replace a white princess for a black one. They wouldn’t dare make mulan or Pocahontas white because that’s seen as discriminatory but apparently it’s ok to make a white princess black. It ruins the whole film which is why I probably won’t be watching them. I’m not at all racist but I disagree with the fact we have to change our history for black people spreading Black Lives Matter when all lives matter not just them. Racism goes both ways. And they might as well make it a completely new film as they have changed the whole storyline as well. They say they want to promote power of women but what about power of men. All these years we’ve wanted gender equality but now we’ve pushed it so far that now women have so much more authority, they have a international women’s day but no men’s day?? I don’t think that’s very equal. And don’t even say that I’m sexist because for your information im female but I don’t like all this women power stuff I want it to be equal. And maybe there could be a gag where a [minority person] asks “Can I have a line?”, and are swiftly told no. It’s a spoof movie, so it wouldn’t be taken completely seriously. The details can be worked out later, but that could work for a premise.

These people seem to forget that you cannot have a virtue without the corresponding vice. Original snow white is brave because she feels fear, she's kind because she puts others before herself, she works hard because she's willing to do even dirty domestic jobs rather than leave them to someone else. that's why we want her to succeed and are glad when she gets her happy ending with her prince. An invincible girlboss who always wins, is never afraid, constantly requires validation and praise, and only ever beats people up is not an effective leader, she's an insecure thug, and a coward! Like a bully who calls themselves strong because they pick fights with people weaker than they are, or a spoiled child who believes they're hard done to when they don't get their own way all the time. I suppose the only good thing you can say, is that at least modern snow white won't get the chance to become someone's abusive, Ambar herd style wife!

  • What's so heartbreaking is that Disney is capable of such MAGIC. All of our childhoods were made from their classic films. Any old Disney song comes on and the world stops because these films raised multiple generations. No, they were not perfect. Yes, there are absolutely some unconscious ideological faults and outdated messages, but ultimately they are remembered for the magic they gave us, the nostalgia of beauty in a simpler time. No child went into a Disney movie trying to delve more meaning from it; children watched it for the joy of it, the inspiration to be more. It's truly heartbreaking to watch it all go to hell in a hand basket. Such a shame.

  • It boggles my mind at 5:51 how can someone like you've mentioned want to portray a character that you can't even remotely emphasize or see yourself as. The movie should've been scrapped as soon as they tried to portray Prince Charming of the film to a stalker when the prince never stalked Snow White. The prince in both the film and original story ( source: Jon Solo on KZhead and the original Snow White ) was out and stumbled upon her casket while the dwarfs mourned her. The dwarfs obliged the prince as he told them how he knew her and wanted to marry her and they granted him the privilege to kiss her which broke the Evil Queen's curse / spell. The narrator in the original Snow White film ( and even off brand Disney movies ) always made it clear that the Evil Queen is just PURE EVIL and wants the fountain of youth which Snow White is and irony that The Prince and Snow White first meet around a wishing well / fountain where the Evil Queen starts to hatch her plan. How are they gonna explain how The Evil Queen basically murdered Snow White's father in the live action and how she basically is a narcissistic mother to Snow White and gaslights her like Cinderella was gaslight. That's my issue. Fin.

Moreover, it feels like Peter Dinklage is mad because he didn't get a part in the film above and beyond anything else. Of course, most of Hollywood's actor have this some sort of God complex where their character must always be good and win everywhere (read: The Rock) and considering the Seven Dwarves didn't have a leader or anything, even if he had been offered the role, they didn't bend that way to give the dwarves a leader and let Mr. Dinklage play that role. I don’t know why that’s being normalized in the first place. I don’t want to go out and party every night. I just want true, genuine love. And apparently I’m the crazy one.

  • Rachel Zegler is the kind of person to ask: “Snow White? What about Snow Black? Or Snow Asian?”

  • there is jenna ortega in one side who loved wednesday's character a lot and also changed the script to fit the role, and here we have (name that shall not be named) who hates the character she's playing and changes the whole fcking thing

  • My former film professor would give this video essay an A plus. You analyzed the problem with Disney storytelling precisely. Another excellent Moon documentary.

    • I agree, but having good dinousaur, and billion dollar hits like aladdin and beauty and the beast seemed nonsensical. GD was great and the other two didn't force diversity in.

  • Snow White was never about love tho, I don’t understand why everyone is talking about it being a love story? Sure, she day dreams about love but so do most people. The real message of Snow White was how she learned to work with the dwarfs and lived independently while still bringing something to the table that the dwarfs didn’t, essentially becoming one of them.

  • Honestly I liked Peter Dinklages performances and how good of an actor he is I never even thought of him as a "short person", just a great actor.
