  • Rachel Zegler has not only caused trouble for Disney's Snow White, but her attitude isn't new and caused trouble on West Side Story as well. West Side Story was supposed to be about fixing the mistakes of the past, but when you listen to those people, they were not impressed with the casting either. What's interesting is that we have interviews talking about both West Side Story and Snow White together. In these same interviews, we get both the opinion that it's important to accurately represent the culture and people involved in the story, and not when it comes to Snow White. Now it's normal for people to hold different morals and values, but they are generally a coherent world view that shouldn't contradict itself. Not in this case. What started as a simple watching an interview turned into a sinkhole that kept getting worse. But now I'm not surprised over Snow White, because underneath it all, it seems to be the same reasoning. It's whatever increases the bank balance. But what do you think of what you saw? Let me know your thoughts down below and as always, thanks for watching :)

    • It's that way to get us used to the idea that any sort of "white" identity or culture is unimportant and nothing to be proud of. Then they get to easily disregard or blame us en masse as if we're some sort of monstrous legion of oppressors. If all dark-skinned people were lumped together as being all the same then people would shit their pants. I'm of mostly Eastern European descent but have a significant amount of Native American in my genes from my great grandmother who was pure Sioux, but I'd be crucified if I tried to celebrate that.

  • Y'know, there's a reimagining of snow white called mirror mirror and I feel like it's everything that Disney want their snow white to be but it'll never be that good. Snow white is kind and caring and wants to make life better for the people of her kingdom. The dwarfs are actual dwarfs, but are all unique fully fleshed out characters, and they actually trick the male lead multiple times, and that's not to say the male lead isn't good. I don't think we need to get rid of the dwarves to make it better to be honest. I don't think Disney's interpretation of dwarves at the time was wrong, but we've come to associate dwarves with little people, especially in acting. So I think they would have to change the depiction like they did in mirror mirror. I love how they wrote the dwarves in mirror mirror because not only are they fully fleshed out, they aren't ashamed of who they are. They're strong, capable characters and they didn't have to diss the original story or get rid of the dwarves to make them better. For the most part mirror mirror follows the important beats of snow white, but it makes little changes in certain spots that I think add to the story. You guys should really check it out?

    @meepmeep749@meepmeep7498 ай бұрын
    • The part about dwarves being associated with little people is so sad and unfortunate. Dwarves are a big part of european folklore, especially in the north. They are mythical fairytale beings and at majority iirc show a good natured and strong character. Just the fact that they (mostly) take this away to be more "diverse"...it is outright disrespectful to the european folklore. You can't show this amount of disrespect and justify it by saying it isn't towards POCs or something. Racism goes on both directions.

    • YES. this is what bothers me so much as well! give us black Ariel - who cares?! her race has nothing to do with the character. but Snow White? she is specifically meant to be WHITE! literally the palest person in the (fictional) world! Tiana, Pocahontas, and Mulan get to keep their race and culture bc it’s a direct part of their story, but for some reason Snow doesn’t? i’d argue Merida need to stay white too, if/when she gets a live-action adaptation. it just doesn’t make sense to take a well-known WHITE story and make it black/brown/etc. that’s not real representation. maybe if they were actually doing a different take on the story, it could work, but i don’t think disney would be the ones to do that and do it well.

And, each island within the Caribbean has different history and traumas and natural resources and conflicts etc, which has humongous impacts on their culture and current status. • A few months ago, I believed that it didn’t matter if POC actors were cast in roles originally written for white characters in films, movies, live-action shows, or animations, as long as the characters were well-written, had developing arcs, a great narrative, and were flawed main characters. However, nowadays, because writers and their woke studios have repeatedly shown that they are not listening to criticism and are calling fans trolls when faced with backlash over their sh!tty writing, I have changed my mind. They have shown that they are moving backward, being derivative in a negative way, dejecting, and displaying incompetence. I now believe that if a studio is trying to create or remake a film, movie, live-action show or animation from an already existing product, they must stick to the source material, which is often a storybook or a novel. This means that if a character is explicitly stated to be white in the source material, then white actors should be cast; and if a character is explicitly stated to be POC, then actors of POC should be cast. Thankfully, there is no shortage of actors of different races, cultures, and colors. Additionally, if studios want to create exclusive representation for people of color in films, movies, live-action shows or animations, there are many existing source materials (both old and new) in the form of storybooks and novels that have not yet been adapted into these formats. It’s not that difficult to be honest. They are willing to waste millions upon millions to tarnish existing good old films/movies/live-action shows/animations so why not use those source materials that I mentioned and make a profit while showing representation in a good faith?

She’s a leader, fights, kills, does all that jazz and ALSO has a love interest and respects the background story. Sure, they adjusted the “beauty/envy” thing to an act of betrayal that made the Evil Queen to want her dead, but still, this is a change that didn’t hurt the story, only made it more “rooted on reality” and believable. And yea, the actress looks more like the original fairytale. And yea, there are dwarfs included in the story and they add SO MUCH to the story by being who they are. And yea, love is important to the story (and god knows why Hollywood hates love that much nowadays). So the whole point is that it’s all just stupid imo.

Why not just write NEW stories to actually encompass those cultures you want to represent like with Coco and Encanto? It's not a sin for the old Disney princesses to be white. It's not a sin for a white person to play a white character. Those stories are a product of their time in history. It just feels like they're trying to get revenge on white-washing of old films by poc-washing modern films. My Puerto Rican self has 0 appreciation for their misplaced efforts. It's just dumb tit for tat. If anything I feel insulted that they're using minorities as political props in their films. Am I supposed to feel good about them making a Latin person play a German girl?????? They really need to move away from politics and "wokeness" and just refocus on making films everyone can enjoy.

There are many people who are “Latin” that are pale skinned- whiter than myself or Disparu. It just shows how ignorant everyone involved with this is that they think brown skin = “Latin representation.” I’ll bet if an actress auditioned that fit their bill but had pale skin, they would have had their little way of looking at each other and saying “she’s not brown enough though.”

    • You are right. Also, "latin" is now a popular tag for non-Canadian/US American people. You know, from the same continent. In this context, Latin is an incorrect term because "Latin" used to be a term for a different especific people from Europe. Very few people inside Mexico say "I'm Latin", although we can use that term just as a lazy way to say "I'm not an Anglo/Saxon/Afro/etc-American" in a US/Canadian context. So, Latin is more like a useful tag outside "Latin-american" countries. Now, I'm Mexican and I'm also white because Mexican is a nationality not a race, and I agree with you that there are a lot of people who ignore that. ¡Saludos, amigo!
