How's this for an almighty German performance saloon group test?
Mat's here to compare the Mercedes-AMG E63 S and the BMW M5 Competition to find out which is the must-have German performance saloon of 2021! From comparing their price and design through to their 0-60mph & brakes, this is the must-see group test for these two cars!
But how do they compare on paper? Well starting with the AMG E63, it's powered by a 4-litre twin-turbo V8, which has the ability to put down 612hp & 850Nm of torque. It also comes equipped with a 9-speed automatic gearbox, along with launch control, and it rolls up with a starting price of £99,000.
Then we come to the BMW M5 Competition. Hiding under the bonnet is a bigger engine than the AMG, a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8. As a result, it can produce more power, at 625hp. However, it's slightly down on torque (at 750Nm) and it only has an 8-speed torque converter gearbox. It'll also set you back a tiny bit more, with a starting price of £102,000.

Agreed across the board. I also think the glass carbon all over e63 interior looks kind of cheap to me even if it isn't. When he switched to the M5 interior, it seemed much sturdier and higher quality materials. And I have to disagree with Matt on the rear end. I absolutely adore the M5 rear where everything hatched up beautifully, especially the blackened edges around the tail lights, whereas the AMG tail lights seemed way too bright cherry red almost like on an accord. That's my opinion at least
I also find it strange that during the sound check, Matt had to even think twice about which vehicle sounded better. And his main reason was because the AMG sounded like a vacuum cleaner but did have a few pops and bangs on the Dcel. Who cares about pops and bangs... Neon SRT4 has pops and bangs 😆
Mercedes guy here. E 63S is my favourite car of all time. Until now. The sound of that M5 and the 0-60 in 2.9 seconds just blew my mind 🤯

Also the exhaust must be different for the cars in the UK I personally haven't heard the e63s in the states but that M5 comp sounds so much different in the state to what was shown... Both in the video were kinda underwhelming tbh.

It's just a tad faster than E63. Very close though. It's alright for Mercedes. With overall package, E63 is much better, checking more boxes!
@@Predators4U Maybe in your opinion, but in mine the M5 is far more attractive. However in a more objective manner, the M5’s fit and finish is better, and is much faster. Not a big fan of modern MBs at all, or a lot of new BMWs, though not the M5.

Boss BMW is not fully going away from their traditional grilles when it comes to the 3, 2, 5, 8, and quite possible the upcoming next gen 7er.. also their X-series cars whether it be X2 all the way up the line they're all traditionally BMW..it's mostly their new electric cars having some odd grilles along with their latest gen M3/M4 and 4 series...even so not all of them will, the upcoming electrified 3 series will retain it and 2 series, and also future 5 series from what I've heard

Im more of an amg guy but the design on that m5 has more of an aggressive and nice look to it. For the amg, I still prefer the older designs rather than the newer designs of the e63s and that goes for the c63s as well

@@alok5065 I could agree about the interior quality part but it’s way more satisfactory, reliable and fun to drive than any bmw out there. it looks better, improves over time because of OTA software updates and they’re quicker/faster than HyperCars :) only thing bmws have is the sound and slightly better build quality that’s it!
@@Plaid_Tesla the BMW could go around the track for laps. The Tesla isn't built for that. That is why they are not competition vehicles. That's the difference. BMW is taking out their own EV's so we'll see where Tesla is in 10 years. Btw Tesla uses Nikola Teslas technology from about 100 years ago. They didn't innovate anything except good software for autonomous driving

I own a 2019 E63S and it is my favorite "all time" car I've ever owned...458,R8V10+,Huracan, 991TTS, 650S Spider. Just installed a Renntech ecu tune and it's on a whole new performance level!0-60@2.87 & Quarter@10.8 128.8mph. A SUPERCAR with ROOM and COMFORT 👍

You can get more feel in the steering if you fiddle with the settings. But I do get what you mean about the steering in comfort setting. The cars are so well matched that it comes down to whether you’re a BMW fan or a Merc fan. In a different colour (Marina Bay Blue for example) the M5 makes the Merc look very average I see there was no mention of mpg in the test 🥴

It's not hard to love an AMG over Bmw M these days. Bmw just seems to lost the rawness in their M cars, engine sound is overly-synthesized, steering is vague. It just seems that Amgs these days tingles the senses more so than a Bmw M

the M5 is here the wow factor, has more power, is faster, and the interior looks mature, serious. it doesnt try to be something else than a very fast, timeless sportssedan and the mercedes is a excellent car and a very elegant design but thats what you expect from a mercedes. being a good buttler. the M5 however is challenging you and screams do punch it ;)

This M5 had to keep that legacy of the fastest supersaloon in the world since 1985 and it did. At some stages it was loosing to the RS6 like in 1998 but now they are on the top undoubtedly.

Coming from a Mercedes fan: The BMW is the better looking and superior car... I think Mercedes is heading in the wrong direction lately designwise: The S class is worse looking than its predecessor (exterior and especially interior), just like this E class and the C class (with its tesla interior...). Only the new CLA, A class, and GLE are better than the old ones but thats just my opinion

BMW all day everyday!!! Not even a contest! I've had (and still got) a 3 series BMW for work,I drive all over the country in it and it blows me away! It does everything I ask of it and doesn't disappoint one bit! I absolutely love it, I did have to swap with a colleague for a day who had a Merc CLS. I hated it, and couldn't wait to get my beema back!!
A big saloon/sedan car hitting 0-60 in 2.9 seconds, that’s foooking incredible.
The Tesla plaid is the same (big saloon) and can do it in 2.0 secs. If that bmw is fooking incredible, the Tesla is ungodly.
It is with 1 ft rollout, and also 0-60 mph is not 0-100 km/h, so it is fast but not so impressive. I can do 0-100km/h in 3,2 without rollout in a 2018 450 hp car!

I have always been an M5 fan, not necessarily a BMW fan. Glad the BMW guys are not ruining this favourite, whether in the looks department or performance side. Takes me back to Grand Turismo 4 more than decade ago when I fast fell in love with it on a PS2 😅

E63 for me. Over last 15 years I owned several BMWs and my current car is 2020 BMW 540i. It only has half of M5 power and for sure does not handle as well as M5 but it is still too similar to M5 to really feel that I am getting something special and different if I go M5 (next year and wife permitting)
The taillights on the new gen 5 series are absolutely stunning and catch my attention and awe every time I lay eyes on them, I love them so much I love to park next to them or cruise behind when I can to further fuel my sexy taillight habit.

I drive mine 21 M5 Comp in 2wd mode full power, trans in slow shift with full soft suspension and comfort steering all the time!

It sounds and looks worse than the M5. I heard both IRL multiple Times, and the M5 is just way more brutal and louder. And the best: it doesnt come with fake exhaust pipes, plastic interiors, and a feminine look. So i dont really get your decision, but okay.
@@user-gt8dh7qj3w definitely doesn't sound worse, looks are subjective. Mat, Chris Harris, Motor Trend, etc all say the Mercedes is more fun.
Mat always does the right verdict when it comes to head to head, but this time though, I think he's wrong because that BMW is bonquers and it doesn't have a soft limiter a 5000rpm, it's just a cold start that restricts it. I would personally prefer the BMW.
I like the BMW too But as he said while driving Mercedes feels better while driving Better sound And much better to travel in A bit more special inside So yeah I think Mercedes is a better choice logically! :)

@@shravannair1657 let's not forget that BMW m5s have been notoriously unreliable and always breaking down at very low mileage, terrible compared to the hand made AMG engines

I love the styling of the M5, itlooks so much better, the headlights look smart and sharp the grille is well formed and has a good size and it has real exhaust, which is just lovely. I love the side profile of the E63 though but overall I prefer the pre-face-lift version, which looked more serious and elegant because it had the classic AMG grille and was a bit of a sleeper. If I had to chose between Mercedes and BMW I would take the BMW, but not the M5, instead I'd rather take the Alpina B5 Touring, which is more practical, comfortable and still fast enough for the Autobahn here in germany ^^ It also has the cool Alpina wheels :D

Matt - love them both, but it took you whole 11 & something minutes to actually name one advantage of merc over the BMW... and that's the estate versions... great review as always. I know design is subjective I know, but the merc is just ok while BMW is.... well it's just spot on
He actually said the merc has the better personal look for him 2 mins 😂 merc has more luxury feeling oldy feeling where is the m5 has a sportier one, looks and feeling are personal as for me i would go for the Mercedes as i want more comfort and the look of it which is more of a sleeper car for my taste, and the interior i love the merc as well as the m5 has this old look bmw which has been the same for years, this is all personal tho

@@knino8321 Didnt he mention performance was better on the BMW. Handling was better on the Bmw, but by just a little? I do feel the Merc feels more exciting to drive due to it's rawness of its engine sound compared to the over-synthesized sound of the Bmw. The Merc just tingles more senses i guess.

0-60 in 2.9 seconds, and a 10.9 quarter mile! Many supercars, even modern ones, cannot do those kind of figures. This is a 1970kg 4 door sedan with a big boot and space for 5 adults. That is just outrageous. 13:45
