Gavin Brett, a lawyer, and his wife who is also a lawyer with a passion for wildlife and sports photography, documented the extraordinary scenes that unfolded during a memorable family trip to the Thornybush Game Reserve in South Africa and shared the video with LatestSightings.com.
Gavin tells the story: "My family and I were on a special trip to Thornybush, celebrating my dad's 80th birthday. We had been exploring the reserve for a few days, and it was a Sunday morning when this incredible drama unfolded."
Their adventure began early that day when, at about 6:20 a.m., they came across a large herd of buffalo. With a total of 21 family members from all over the world on the vehicle, it was a truly special occasion. Little did they know that the day was about to become unforgettable.
The group decided at 6:40 am to move on to a sighting that was shared over the radio. It was a pride of lions that had been seen the day before, not too far from where they were. At around 6:46 am, the lions began to move, and the family decided to follow them.
The lions led Gavin and his family back to where a herd of buffalo was grazing. At 6:53 a.m., two male lions joined the lionesses that had already been with one male. At this point, they were dangerously close to a buffalo calf.
Gavin explains, "we were already observing the calf when suddenly the lionesses had taken down the calf, and during this intense moment, a lion cub had been hiding nearby. As soon as it realized the calf was down, the cub emerged."
Gavin pulled out his video camera, while his kids and wife started taking photos. Meanwhile, the buffalo herd was not just standing by, they were operating together and devising a plan to rescue the calf. Just like the lions had come together, the buffalo bulls were taking control of the situation, actively going after the lions with the rest of the herd right behind them.
"In particular, the mother buffalo was the one that refused to watch her little calf get eaten. She stood up to the lions with no fear! This bravery by the mother gave the calf just enough time to escape. Unfortunately, it meant that the lions would shift their focus, and they took down the mother instead." This buffalo mother truly showed love when she sacrificed her life for her calf.

That's a strong pride, multiple adult males in their primes and the entire pride looks experienced and skilled with cohesive teamwork and lethal tactics
That has nothing to do with whether the buffaloes think like humans, only 3 buffaloes would be needed to win because then they would not retreat and continue fighting those Leonese in other documentaries, only 2 have been able to be with a herd of eight Leonese buffaloes
Yes it helps the lions that the buffaloes are too stupid to realise their superiority in numbers. They're not daring enough.
The way that lioness slapt that buffalo across its face😂😂😂
Kendini feda ediş hiç komik değildir!
I'm here for it. I burst into laughter and I've waken up my roommate from his sleep as a result😂
3:57 that slap from lioness was the game changer that let these lions got their hunt.
Yes you are very expert
Why can't the humans keep their mouth fully shut while in the jungle?
Would you ?
That's a very good point
Yeah, the lion sleeps tonight so everyone should tone their voices down.
Same reason that people see this and think the animal just voluntarily sacrificed itself lmao people nowadays are so ignorant to reality it’s not even funny. This animal wasn’t sacrificing anything, it was attacking a threat that was near its herd/baby. It got caught and then killed it. It didn’t choose for that to happen, which is what a sacrifice would’ve been. I’ve seen tonsssss of videos of moms leaving their babies behind when something like this happens. 99% of animal species don’t think intelligently like humans do, they’re not thinking with strategy like “well maybe if I distract them and sacrifice myself, my baby will be safe”. It’s a damn water buffalo, it’s not a Dolphin or a Chimpanzee and to be honest, those animals probably aren’t capable of thinking with that much empathy. People need to stop attaching human emotions to animals. It’s cringe af
Especially the child that runs it’s mouth is annoying.
Actually, the jeep probably prevented the buffalo’s momentum so they couldn’t charge
I was thinking that too. They are too close
@andrewrosser8909 in this case I believe the jeep was too closer to enterfere the epic battle Lions had advantage to be in front jeep There many incidents where human distraction are affecting or contributing win loose in the wild ,I cant say this epic battle was a nature Lions have goat there meal today ,buffalo family has lost one of their own ,life goes on in the wild
Not probably, DEFINITELY. 😡
Wow that was epic. The buffalo definitely had the upper hand in terms of numbers but they didn’t have the courage. They literally gave away a member of the herd to the lions.
This is good for humans to see lol. Most of us are too chicken shit to stand up to tyranny. We always have the numbers never the courage.
@@greggalton3331 so so true..
Joe Rogan was right about how dumb they are
Animals have an instinct that even one of their members are too weak to continue on with the pride, they allow this to happen. The mother was injured and would have still died from those injuries. Sacrificing her meant the pride would be left alone for a while. When an older Lion who leads a pride gets sick, the lionesses will kill him collectively for a stronger leader to take over. They instinctively know these things.
@@MadeByGod1973pride? you mean herd, which is what you call a group of buffalo or cow. Pride is what a group of lions are called.
The leading male lion is fierce and strong as hell.

The buffalo group could have done better to save their mate
The big cats, hyenas and wild dogs would be screwed if their preys know about teamwork
@@containedhurricane Unless they would start to teamwork with each others.
The problem is that is a large pride of lions, if they try saving this one they probably will just catch another... and those lions don't look too scared, they know there is strength in numbers
Yeah. Elephants are basically just buffaloes but 10 times better
That's just the aura or you can say as the terror of these predators. Imagine if a lion or tiger roams around a village. Even if the villagers are 100's in numbers, we would be afraid of a one single predator, that’s just the aura of these animals. What can we expect from a much less smarter animal like buffalo. That's just in the instinct of the prey animals, the fear unlocks as soon as we face these fearless and brave predators. We have evolved into having this fear to save ourselves from predators.
Male lions are strong asf
Male lions sometimes grossly underestimate their capabilities.
They are sometimes very cautious to avoid getting gored. That type of injury can mean death if the wound gets infected.

So frustrating watching all the other buffalos stand around at the end
I feel like the safari vehicle got too close for comfort for the other buffalos to come help and they should've moved back. I know buffalos sometimes have the "bystander effect" when one of them are being hunted, but the first time the jeep backed off they moved in (2:55) , but when the fight got closer to the jeep at around (3:09), they started to hesitate.
The animals have no problem with safari vehicles.

I will never understand people in comments sections, that patrol and reprimand others for watching nature unfold. I am convinced you come here just to gate-keep and angrily goose-guard anybody else with a differing opinion. If it’s going to upset you? Don’t click on the damn thing. If it’s traumatic to you then why watch it on purpose?. Of course we can have compassion, but all these retaliatory comments “This is cruel” “How could you watch something dying like this” “it’s too brutal” … yes it is brutal by our standard, but the lions don’t know that, they don’t care about that, their objective is to eat, not carefully dispatch their prey item so they they don’t offend us humans. Stop projecting human emotion onto wild apex predators that aren’t dictated by human morals, compassion or kindness, but only the instinct to survive. Yes we can have great respect to the buffalo, a force of nature in its own right, but we can also respect that this pride of lions (tenacious at that) were able to nourish themselves and thrive another day.
When the calf was down “We must preserve the next generation. Rescue it at all costs” When momma went down “Damn.. that’s crazy..”

Nature at its worst
Those are hungry prime male lions! It's always amazing to watch a pride of lions hunting! Look closely at how the lioness distracts the buffalo towards her so that the male lion could jump on its back and the lioness clinched it for them by swatting the bull that came in otherwise they would have lost the buffalo!

That Buffalo cow had more balls than the rest of her Herd , such a shame cause they could have easely saved Her
Exactly 😢😢
Being catched, killed and eaten has nothing to do with having balls. Lions have to eat too and therefore something else must die, that's it.
The saying goes: If you bring 100 lions led by a dog, the lions will die like dogs, but if you bring 100 dogs led by a lion, they will fight like dogs. The male lion astonished me when he brought the buffalo down to the ground using his muscle mass and maintaining his composure.
Bro you said that wrong, you mean if you have 100 dogs led by a lion they will fight like lions.
2:30, The lioness was cunning she forced the issue, got in position parallel to the big male, and got the 🐂 to turn and chase her, turning its back to the big male.

They would all be safe even if just 1 buffalo charged and helped

Once in a lifetime sighting! Awesome!
Verdade
The Buffalos have no idea what they're capable of.
I was born and raised in East Africa and we were always taught to respect at every level the wildlife and the habitat which belongs to them. Therefore, it never fails to amaze me of the depths of monumental stupidity which people can and do descend into! Firstly, the African buffalo is potentially a particularly aggressive animal and typically if guarding its territory or offspring. Here we have a completely open-sided vehicle which wouldn’t prevent either a buffalo or lion from attacking the occupants. And then the truly absurd practice of interfering at such close range with the feeding frenzy of the pride of predators who would have no qualms of savaging these moronic tourists and the equally thick-headed rangers who are brazen enough to even entertain the idea of interfering in moments such as this. I’m astonished that there are not many more reported incidents of attacks on this breed of sightseer and I, for one, would have no empathy for either serious injury or deaths incurred on the back of such astonishing ignorance and incompetence.
Thank you for stating what needed to be said here !
Couldn't agree more. Well stated
The reason why you don't see any reported instances is because they are perfectly safe. People like you are absolutely paranoid and fear everything. Your chances of being attacked are very very low. we are the better species and the animals know it, this is why animals run from us. However if it's a bear or lion they know they can win one-on-one if the person is unarmed with a gun or knife, but in groups humans are unbeatable. So therefore they ignore the trucks full of people.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you for this post, you're 100% correct. Absolute idiots the lot of them.
You can feel the power, these thunderous noises they make to look more intimidating. These animals are so magnificent.
How amazing this scene right here is probably happened for hundreds-thousands of years
Incredible footage. Buffalo and lions take their position. Lions take so much risk. Their is all the pride in this huge affrontement.
Fascinating how the lions showed no fear despite being massively outnumbered 😳
The mien of a warrior.
It's all a big mind game. Both sides are afraid of each other, but the one that shows the least fear wins. Sometimes it's the buffalo, sometimes it's the lion. Spectacular all around.
Hunger made them brave against that army of buffalo.
@@An_Actual_Ratbuffalos are incredibly ret @rded, if they had an IQ above 0.5 they would figure they face no threat as a herd from lions, and would not be known as preys, instead lions would be targets, but they are so dumb, like you see here they let their own get killd even tho they can easily stop it.
Lions know how dumb buffaloes are ..
There were 2 bravest lions here: male lion and female lion who grabbed buffalo by its neck till the end. They were not scared even when other buffalos approached. Even lioness punched one buffole at nose. Both were not scared at all unlike others
Mothers will always do anything to protect their children 😊❤!
That male lion crushed the windpipe and choked out the cow within a minute or so. Incredible power.
When you mess with a pride with several males around, your chances of survival are slim to none.
That awesome! The male lion leap on the buffalo’s back and as it tried wrestling it down, two lionesses jumped in perfect synch onto the buffalo’s back. 😂
Lack of courage and unity. Nothing else.
absolutely one of the best lion hunt buffalo videos. That's why people say the heart of a lion , attacking and killing these extremely dangerous and aggressive 1 ton animals right in front of hundreds of buffalos is something only lions can do.
Exactly, the Cape buffalo, which weighs a ton, is an extremely dangerous prey. In fact, it is the most dangerous prey, with the iron head with two hooks a meter long, like a spear. It can penetrate the metal of a car and even lift it with its horns. Therefore, engaging in a hunting operation like this is a suicide operation that lions master.
@@user-rr5eb7nh7n absolutely, some people don't realize how dangerous and powerful even a lone cape buffalo can be , let alone hundreds of them all together charging.
