This buffalo mom tried to rescue her calf that was caught by a pride of lions. While chasing the lions off, they decided to shift focus and caught her instead.

Gavin Brett, a lawyer, and his wife who is also a lawyer with a passion for wildlife and sports photography, documented the extraordinary scenes that unfolded during a memorable family trip to the Thornybush Game Reserve in South Africa and shared the video with LatestSightings.com.
Gavin tells the story: "My family and I were on a special trip to Thornybush, celebrating my dad's 80th birthday. We had been exploring the reserve for a few days, and it was a Sunday morning when this incredible drama unfolded."
Their adventure began early that day when, at about 6:20 a.m., they came across a large herd of buffalo. With a total of 21 family members from all over the world on the vehicle, it was a truly special occasion. Little did they know that the day was about to become unforgettable.
The group decided at 6:40 am to move on to a sighting that was shared over the radio. It was a pride of lions that had been seen the day before, not too far from where they were. At around 6:46 am, the lions began to move, and the family decided to follow them.
The lions led Gavin and his family back to where a herd of buffalo was grazing. At 6:53 a.m., two male lions joined the lionesses that had already been with one male. At this point, they were dangerously close to a buffalo calf.
Gavin explains, "we were already observing the calf when suddenly the lionesses had taken down the calf, and during this intense moment, a lion cub had been hiding nearby. As soon as it realized the calf was down, the cub emerged."

Gavin pulled out his video camera, while his kids and wife started taking photos. Meanwhile, the buffalo herd was not just standing by, they were operating together and devising a plan to rescue the calf. Just like the lions had come together, the buffalo bulls were taking control of the situation, actively going after the lions with the rest of the herd right behind them.
"In particular, the mother buffalo was the one that refused to watch her little calf get eaten. She stood up to the lions with no fear! This bravery by the mother gave the calf just enough time to escape. Unfortunately, it meant that the lions would shift their focus, and they took down the mother instead." This buffalo mother truly showed love when she sacrificed her life for her calf.

    • That has nothing to do with whether the buffaloes think like humans, only 3 buffaloes would be needed to win because then they would not retreat and continue fighting those Leonese in other documentaries, only 2 have been able to be with a herd of eight Leonese buffaloes

    • Same reason that people see this and think the animal just voluntarily sacrificed itself lmao people nowadays are so ignorant to reality it’s not even funny. This animal wasn’t sacrificing anything, it was attacking a threat that was near its herd/baby. It got caught and then killed it. It didn’t choose for that to happen, which is what a sacrifice would’ve been. I’ve seen tonsssss of videos of moms leaving their babies behind when something like this happens. 99% of animal species don’t think intelligently like humans do, they’re not thinking with strategy like “well maybe if I distract them and sacrifice myself, my baby will be safe”. It’s a damn water buffalo, it’s not a Dolphin or a Chimpanzee and to be honest, those animals probably aren’t capable of thinking with that much empathy. People need to stop attaching human emotions to animals. It’s cringe af

    • Animals have an instinct that even one of their members are too weak to continue on with the pride, they allow this to happen. The mother was injured and would have still died from those injuries. Sacrificing her meant the pride would be left alone for a while. When an older Lion who leads a pride gets sick, the lionesses will kill him collectively for a stronger leader to take over. They instinctively know these things.

Even if the villagers are 100's in numbers, we would be afraid of a one single predator, that’s just the aura of these animals. What can we expect from a much less smarter animal like buffalo. That's just in the instinct of the prey animals, the fear unlocks as soon as we face these fearless and brave predators. We have evolved into having this fear to save ourselves from predators.

  • I will never understand people in comments sections,that patrol and reprimand others for watching nature unfold. I am convinced you come here just to gate-keep and angrily goose-guard anybody else with a differing opinion. If it’s going to upset you? Don’t click on the damn thing. If it’s traumatic to you then why watch it on purpose?. Of course we can have compassion, but all these retaliatory comments “This is cruel” “How could you watch something dying like this” “it’s too brutal” … yes it is brutal by our standard, but the lions don’t know that, they don’t care about that, their objective is to eat, not carefully dispatch their prey item so they they don’t offend us humans. Stop projecting human emotion onto wild apex predators that aren’t dictated by human morals, compassion or kindness, but only the instinct to survive. Yes we can have great respect to the buffalo, a force of nature in its own right, but we can also respect that this pride of lions (tenacious at that) were able to nourish themselves and thrive another day.

  • I was born and raised in East Africa and we were always taught to respect at every level the wildlife and the habitat which belongs to them. Therefore, it never fails to amaze me of the depths of monumental stupidity which people can and do descend into! Firstly, the African buffalo is potentially a particularly aggressive animal and typically if guarding its territory or offspring. Here we have a completely open-sided vehicle which wouldn’t prevent either a buffalo or lion from attacking the occupants. And then the truly absurd practice of interfering at such close range with the feeding frenzy of the pride of predators who would have no qualms of savaging these moronic tourists and the equally thick-headed rangers who are brazen enough to even entertain the idea of interfering in moments such as this. I’m astonished that there are not many more reported incidents of attacks on this breed of sightseer and I, for one, would have no empathy for either serious injury or deaths incurred on the back of such astonishing ignorance and incompetence.

Your chances of being attacked are very very low. we are the better species and the animals know it, this is why animals run from us. However if it's a bear or lion they know they can win one-on-one if the person is unarmed with a gun or knife, but in groups humans are unbeatable. So therefore they ignore the trucks full of people.

    @levent.a.7280@levent.a.72807 ай бұрын
    • Exactly, the Cape buffalo, which weighs a ton, is an extremely dangerous prey. In fact, it is the most dangerous prey, with the iron head with two hooks a meter long, like a spear. It can penetrate the metal of a car and even lift it with its horns. Therefore, engaging in a hunting operation like this is a suicide operation that lions master.
