Wild dogs are known as one of the animal kingdom’s most successful hunters, almost 80% success rate.
This video shows you exactly why!
45-year-old Mandy Taplin experienced this highly emotional sighting in Moremi, in Botswana.
After Mandy shared the sighting with LatestSightings.com, she explained what happened:
“Our guide, Lets, from Ethnic Nature Safari Tours, was taking us out for the last morning drive of our incredible 4-night stay at Moremi.
We had left our campsite early and had already seen wildebeest, zebra, impala, giraffe, jackal, saddle billed storks, wattled cranes and 2 male lions.”
“At around 8am we saw buffaloes in the distance and what looked like calves playing, so we decided to get a closer look. As we were approaching, we realised that there was a large pack of wild dogs. It was unbelievably exciting as we had heard them 2 nights prior but were unable to locate them.”
“On arrival, we saw that the buffalo herd had been split, and in the middle, the wild dogs were actually eating 2 buffalo calves.
What happened next was a roller coaster of emotions and an absolute adrenaline rush...”
“The rest of the buffaloes started moving towards us in order to join the rest of the herd. In a split second, the alpha dogs, I assume they were, went directly for the front of the herd, which sent the herd into a panic. The dogs reacted very quickly and in the chaos managed to take another 2 calves. Another 4 buffaloes and 1 calf were left separated from the herd and the dogs made short work of taking that calf as well.”
“In total, they had taken 5 calves and the buffaloes could not do anything about it. Although this was so exciting to see, it was also very sad and exceptionally gruesome to watch. It took between 15 - 30 minutes for the calves to die and they continued bleating the whole time. It was gut-wrenching. We left shortly after the last calf succumbed.”
“I think this was a once in a lifetime sighting. We go to the bush fairly often and have never seen anything that can compare. Our guide has grown up in the delta and guided for many years and even he, and all the other guides we spoke to, had never seen anything quite like this before.”
“We had not intended on going to Moremi, but my husband and I decided to spoil ourselves for our 23rd anniversary. We literally saw the safari vehicle in the car park at a Spar when were doing some shopping, and we then made inquiries. The next day we were off to Moremi and had an unbelievable experience.
If you have a sighting like this in your life, be prepared to be in awe at how effective these dogs are at hunting.”

    • Silver Fullbuster false. ALONG with the dogs excellent coordination and team work skills, they’re endurance is through the roof. Their stamina speed size and agility make them a hard target to “ram” as a buffalo. Therefor taking on a huge pack like that is just over whelming and exhausting

    • Well look at the pack size.. There's at least 35 wild dogs.. Some are distracting the adults while others take down prey.. Lion's aren't as agile and don't sit there nipping at the back legs the whole time either and they only come on packs of 10 or under vs the 35 wild dogs ya the odds are definitely in their favor!

What happened to their natural hunts of wildebeest, impala . I realize when you hungry no food is exempt but dam they keep it up at this rate no buffalo calves will make it to adulthood. I don't think I ever seen a pack this big, they even have time enough to chase all the mothers away after they had their fill. Their main purpose is eat get back to the cubs, these dogs so efficient there's time to take a break sit back and take a smoke I have seen it all. Wild dogs are my favorite because of their technique in hunting I'm not seeing it. If life is this good they thriving.

  • Hand to god. That made for hard viewing, and I love wild dogs. They are the most maligned and vilified of all the hunters in the savannah. A reputation gained through peoples ignorance and misunderstanding . They are the only species, other than us) to care for the sick and elderly in their packs/families. BUT I have to add that the taking of multiple buffalo calves couldn’t watch without wishing the mothers saved one or two of the calves to survive. One, has to though look at the dogs perspective in this. A large pack (one of the largest filmed that I’ve ever seen) with pups? and with soo many adult mouths to feed takes a lot of meat to stay healthy and successful . So on balance I have to side with the dogs. Buffalo numbers far, far exceed those of the dogs, and they , unlike the buffalo are shot, poisoned , treated like vermin, so yes , the dogs carry the day for me.

  • The wild dog's fast speed but smaller size compared to Lions or Hyenas makes them harder for the cape buffalo to ram them with their horns. The same thing applies when Wild Dogs are hunting wildebeest, gazelle, and impala, which is one of the main reasons why Wild Dogs have the highest success rate in hunting among African carnivores, on top of their fantastic teamwork skills. But then again Wild Dogs have to worry about their kills being stolen by the aforementioned bigger predators...nature is harsh.

    • No, not pathetic just outnumbered. Imagine trying to protect your child while you and the child are being attacked simultaneously by 15 guys. Even with your intelligence, you would either die trying to protect your kid in which case you both would die or you would run. If it were one on one the Buffalo would have protected the calf. It's just an unfair advantage. Never underestimate the power of numbers and a coordinated attack. Wild dogs are successful hunters.

    • If anything, African wild dogs are shy and tend to avoid humans. This is a rare encounter on safari. It is unlikely that the jeep proximity is to blame, and more likely that the original commentator is on the right track. Lions tend toward more front-on attacks with fewer numbers, as well as being more likely in general to attack buffalo. Perhaps this is indeed to blame for the unsuccessful, unconfident defense mounted by the buffalo herd
