Nic Nel, a professional guide at @MalaMalaGameReserve captured the intense battle on camera. Nic shared his story and footage of the sighting with LatestSightings.com.
“We spent the morning tracking a resident lion pride that calls this area home. We were lucky enough to find some of them quite early in the drive; three of the females, to be precise. They were all quite hungry and seemingly on the hunt. They stumbled upon a decent-sized bachelor herd of buffalo and the battle began!
“After carefully assessing the situation, the lions targeted one of the weaker bulls. They charged in at full speed and were able to single him out. The tactic was clear: they were not going for the kill because taking down a big buffalo bull is no easy ask for 3 lionesses. So they decided to rather wear him down before they made the final blow.”
“The buffalo bull was not going down without a fight. He stood strong and tried to swing his horns fast enough to catch one of the lionesses off guard. The lionesses, on the other hand, were too smart; one of them managed to get onto his back and began biting at his spine while the other two took to his legs and hoping to snap his tendons and cripple him.”
“The bull let out multiple distress calls, which caused his family to instantly respond. They rallied together, forming a line, and charging in at the lions. With powerful horns and brute strength, they pushed the lionesses away for a moment.”
“The fight went back and forth for hours. The buffaloes would keep running in trying to save their brother, and the lionesses would just move off for a moment and instantly come back. At one point, they even got the big buffalo on his back and tried eating him alive, but like true family, the other buffaloes refused to give up and rushed in again.”
"However, things took a turn, the buffalo herd paused, sensing a shift. The buffalo sank to the ground, letting out a final, sorrowful bellow before falling silent. The lionesses had succeeded; their constant biting had broken his back and severed the tendons in his legs. With no chance of recovery, he and the other buffaloes understood the outcome."
“The exhausted lions lay next to the immobile buffalo, who was amazingly still alive albeit not for long. As tired as lions were, they quickly called their little ones, and out of nowhere appeared seven cute cubs, all excited for a good meal. They immediately began biting and taking nibbles out of the buffalo's back, while their moms watched on and caught their breath.”

  • I was in One of Kenya’s safari lodges in December of 1979 . Around midnight we got knock on the doors by hotel staff that there were lions outside . What we saw just blew our minds . A herd of buffalos was chasing 3-4 lionesses . The lions were able to climb on a high rock , buffalos surrounded them and were there for an hour . They were very organized , other buffalos would come from behind and replace the ones in the front . Eventually the buffalos left and lions were able to get down and walk away . Unfortunately the movie that we took was sent to be processed and we never got it back . They said they lost it . There was a hunter among the hotel guests who said that the lions were not hungry otherwise the situation would be reversed .

    @NannupTiger@NannupTigerАй бұрын
    • Yeah hyenas are brutal ugly looking cackling mfz 😅 They have a stronger bite force but they don't suffocate their prey like lions do so I'd say lions are 10 times less brutal in that sense. I think in this instance the lionesses were exhausted after hours of trying to take down that buffalo and had no strength left to suffocate the poor buffalo. They tend to suffocate and kill their prey to eliminate anything that could be a threat towards their cubs when they feed.

      @daginezho1637@daginezho1637Ай бұрын
    • @daginezho1637 Hyenas are not ugly mfz. They are amazing & far more interesting than any cat. They are also highly intelligent, up there with elephants, octopus & bees etc. Very smart animals. They'd have finished this buffalo & left by the time these lions pulled it down. Lions are always eating their prey alive, too. It can take over 30+ minutes to fully suffocate a zebra, wildebeest or buffalo etc. Meanwhile the back end of it is being scoffed into by the rest of the pride. Lions are no better than hyenas or hunting dogs when it comes to their eating habits, just slower cos they gotta chew pieces of flesh off as they can't rip big chunks off like the hyenas or dogs, which have serious jaw power, indeed.

      @NannupTiger@NannupTigerАй бұрын
    • @@NannupTigerwell hyenas are just hella ugly and there's nothing you can do about it 😂 at the end of the day they are just lions favorite victims, I get your frustration as an hyena fan hh. in more people dislike them for being damn scavengers and food stealers while studies have stated that lions steal food from hyenas very more 🤣🤣🤣✋🏾 ain't nobody like your buddies and they are damn disgraceful. and you must be sick if you trynna compare the way they rip their preys bodies ass first, to the way these majestic lions suffocate preys in minutes.

He can only pull so much effort for a wounded fellow bull when he has his own self preservation mixed in, as well as any other motives going on, such as keeping with the herd, watching over any ladies, or so on. It's not maliciousness, just that he can only help so much before giving up.
