Mother Elephant Gives Up on a Twin to Save the Other from Lions
A weak and thirsty mother elephant with her newborn twins is forced to drink right next to a pride of lions. The lions go in for the hunt, but the mother doesn’t give up without a fight.

During an early morning safari in Chobe National Park, 63-year-old Desmond Clack, a seasoned tour guide, captured this unique scene. Desmond shared the footage and story with LatestSightings.com.
“We set off at dawn, entering Chobe National Park at 6 a.m. in search of elephants, we headed to a remote watering hole inland, as we hadn’t seen any the night before along the river.”
Upon arrival around 6:30 am, the first sight that greeted them was a pride of lions feasting on a young buffalo. "It was a special sighting, but what followed was extraordinary," Desmond recalls. Just then, a female elephant, accompanied by her twin calves-a rarity in itself-approached the watering hole. Seeing an elephant with twins is a very rare occurrence. It must have been very difficult for the mother elephant to take care of two tiny babies at the same time. She had to find enough food and water for both and keep them safe.
"She was unaware of the lurking danger as she led her babies to quench their thirst. The mother elephant was desperate for water. The dry season had left few water sources, and this isolated waterhole was their only hope. Despite the risks, she had no choice but to lead her twins there. Suddenly, she realised the presence of the lions. The pride, having just fed, surprisingly turned their attention to the new arrivals."
“The mother elephant realising the danger, tried to fend off the lions. The lions retreated but soon regrouped, and this time they encircled the mother and calves. In a bold move to fend them off, she charged at them, hoping to scare them away. This left her calves momentarily unguarded. It was during this critical moment that the lions seized the opportunity to attack. In the chaos, one of the calves tripped, and a male lion saw its chance. He pounced and grabbed it!”
"The mother elephant rushed back, realising the danger to her other calf. In a frantic bid to save her offspring, she was torn between protecting the second calf or rescuing the first calf. She rushed at the lions that had grabbed the first calf, leaving the second exposed. The lions took this moment to go at the second calf. Luckily for it, the mother returned in time to save it. However, the first calf was not so lucky."
The sighting ended with the mother elephant and her surviving calf escaping, leaving the lions and her first calf behind. At this point, Desmond stopped filming because it was just too sad. He couldn't keep watching as a little elephant was taken away from the mother, and she could do nothing but look on.
"In such moments, it's best to understand the situation and remain quiet. Any noise can escalate the tension. It's the harsh reality of the circle of life."
"To witness an elephant with twins was a first for me, and the unfolding events were both awe-inspiring and heart-wrenching. In the wild, every day is a fight for survival, and this sighting was a testament to the incredible strength and resilience of these majestic creatures."

The poor mother elephant they are as sensitive as us bless her heart
Where was the elephants herd? It is rare for them to be alone. 💔😥
My first thought as well. Really dangerous out there for her two babies to not be with the herd.

That's less of a sacrifice and more of a severely overwhelmed situation.
I agree! Wish her family had been around to help her surround the babies! I can't help but think, something must have been wrong, for her to be alone like that, taking a chance, drinking at a lion's watering hole?

amazing how difficult it was to even see that there were 2 baby elephants in the start
Having to choose to protect one of the two baby elephants is probably the mother elephant's most painful decision
She seemed inexperienced as a mother, which led her to making rash decisions on how to guard her calves. She didn't seemingly choose either, it's just that the baby elephant stumbled and got grabbed. If she went after the baby who she couldn't catch up to in the lion's jaws, she would also lose her other baby being flanked behind her.
I dont think it made a choice, she had no choice..the lionesses were everywhere
@@angel91485 Best answer....there seemed to be no choice..... Would we not. be forced to act accordingly, if in the sane situation?? Lisa
True
Why are you alone, lions around you 😢
If you guys watch the last couple of seconds of the video you'll realize that she was going to try to rescue the first calf, but then the second one got grabbed so she had to give up on the first one. Just like the title of the video said.
If she goes back to the one being chewed on the other one will get caught just like first one
She didn't abandon none. She went to save him too and didn't give up. It's sad but she shouldn't have chased the lions. Poor mom and baby elephant. As a mother id die for mine.
Yup. Click bait BS. This channel used to be better.
She abandoned none...
for starters she should not bring two little ones straight into the lion pride, alone, that was totally careless of her; probably inexperienced first time mother
@Mandrak789 its also possible the pride was out on a hunt already.

3:40 nearly got the other baby too. Hopefully he can recover from the bite/scratches
The bites and scratches sure. The getting eaten is a different story.
I don't think the mother did that, the baby elephant stumbled and they got it. The mother tried to retrieve it, but it was too late. There was no "surrender" or sacrifice here.
The cow "ran" away from them (3:15), the stumble didn't make any difference.

That's heartbreaking. Circle of life. 😢 That was a lot of lions.
Too many for her to take on & try to keep her eyes on all of them, plus keeping her babies protected.
For the people who say "why didn't you people save the babies? 😠": This is nature. This is how nature works. This pride could easily have been starving for days and been desperate to eat a proper meal, even if they were already eating a young buffalo (that surely wouldn't have been enough for six adult/close to adult lions. Like it says in the description of the video "In the wild, every day is a fight for survival". Had the people scared off the pride, the lions might have starved and become weaker and the babies might have lived longer. Perhaps there was cubs hiding nearby that needed food as well. Perhaps the lionesses were pregnant and needed the sustenance for the growing cubs. And as the caption says, taking care of twins would surely have been difficult for the mother. Which means that, essentially by one calf dying, it increases the risks of survival for the other calf as well as the mother.
Literally no one is saying that.

The mom will remember. She'll catch a couple lions in the future
I’m somewhat desensitised to a lot of this/these natural occurrences or processes….but I will admit that was tough to watch. Also pretty incredible to see that lion just grab the calf which probably weighs around 90 - 100 kilograms with an ease and trot off into the scrub. It’s gutting to see, but knowing natures process of balance vs mercy…the potential likelihood of both calves surviving into the impending summer (for our side of the hemisphere)is naught. We will say “nature is brutal, “Fuck lions they are evil” or “Nature is too brutal, I can’t watch this” which yes, brutal it can be, but I also acknowledge that is also just our way of masking the raw unvarnished truth, because we have become so disconnected from nature and the planet that we find reality too confronting. Great footage team, once in a lifetime capture on that one!.
While it is sad that the mother lost her child, another way to look at it is that the lion gets to live another while.
Everything on our planet eats everything else, the sooner people get this through their minds the better. That being said, I chose not to watch the video because of this fact.

Wasn’t sacrificed, it chased after a lion when it didn’t need to and the calf slipped whilst running away. The Mother also tried to save it.
