Generally elephants take care of their own... what happened here with this baby elephant at Hwange National Park? Excuse the noisy water pump. the wind, and the chatter and laughter of the students who entered the hide with their ranger. They were so excited. Probably their first time experiencing something as amazing as this. (Yes, we do prefer a nice quiet hide to watch the wildlife.)
But, on to the mum and tiny one. They came in with this large herd as you'll see. However, the tiny one is treated rather roughly by several herd members. Was rather odd to us. Also, when the tiny one falls into the waterhole.... where did everyone go?
Mum does return and seems to enjoy helping her tiny one navigate the water. She sure gets protective when the hippos venture too close!
The most strange is at the end... the herd leaves without mum and the tiny one! Did they reject this baby elephant?

Just some notes. Moms go off to have the baby in private. They return to their herds with new babies that have poor vision and not strong legs. The herd may be passive and ignore the calf, or rejoice. Depends on the mother's rank and if the calf carries the smell of the mom. Baby elephants instinctively follow large moving things because of their poor eye sight when young. They also don't have any good control of their trunks yet. Why it is drinking with It's mouth rather than trunk. This is a young mother who brought her calf too early to the herd. Just inexperienced. The scent of the calf was still new and not tightly connected to the mother yet. The hippos came in, killers of young elephants and made the herd panic. At one point you see the calf follow the wrong elephant, look at the tusks. This elephant shoves it and walks over it. While the mom was chasing hippos. After the mom gets her calf from the hippos, she leaves to be alone to better solidify the bond and their scent so the herd will see it as their kin.
Thanks
Always good to learn something new about wildlife
Thank you for explaining that! I was worrired the baby would be rejected entirely. So ... even tho the herd witnessed the birth, etc. -- they STILL need to smell the mother's scent on the baby, or it's shunned? I never knew baby elephants were preyed upon by hippos!? They appear to be co-existing very well at this watering hole. How do elephants become orphaned? Given their level of emotional intelligence, it seems very counterintuitive. Thanks for enlightening me.
Thanks for explaining as that was quite unsettling to watch....
Looks like one of the senior members (possibly matriarch or grandma of the baby?) actually tries to encourage the baby to go to mom around the 7:17 min mark - she curls her trunk and gently pushes the baby towards mom while it's in the water - I'm always amazed how smart they are as well as how delicate they can be even tho they are such large animals, yes it was a bit scary watching the one nearly step on the baby but being that big does have its challenges too
Did I miss something? It appears to me that the mother was doing her best to help her baby! The elephant trunk is like a fifth leg that does a remarkable job keep the baby close to her and out of danger!
THE MOM AND LIL ELFIE ARE 🙂BEAUTIFUL MOTHER
Beautiful, raw footage of a real life drama. It is disturbing to watch. That is such a tiny baby and so cute, it hurts to know Momma kicked it for no reason. But she did protect the calf from Hippos who were being very territorial. They learned their lesson in the end. Great job of shooting this segment, very well done!

The baby did not get "stepped on", just kind of got kicked away. It seemed briefly confused about which was it's mother. The mom came over after that happened to check on her baby, and the baby again tried to go to the other one thinking it was it's mom. Newborn elephants drink with their mouth until they learn to drink with their trunk, that's why it put it's whole face in the water. I love elephants and how they take care of each other and stay together in packs for life. Humans could learn to be better by watching them.

Agreed!
Donald Roberts he a weak leak 2 the herd the leader did not approve of him so they banned him mother that's her baby regardless of the situation she gonna love her own this what I thought of during this video n still does not matter of her love he aint built for the elephant herd they look at him as a waste
Chris Baines interesting perspective
e based upon his final couple of years. There was a documentary on him last night and he basically agreed he did not want to be there. He did just walk on the team, did not even tell his best mate who just happened to be the Australian captain. That is because the pressure got to him. On saying all of this he was sensational.
Yes, he goes against the female who was hurting him and first, chasing his Mom. Before that, he make mistake at coming back to the wrong mum...Its why ! Look how he ask others by taping his mouth "where is my mother" and all others give respons. Many people are confusing mother and agressive female. (sorry for my english)
This baby had the power to endure fatigue, privation. He was quite a runner, keeping up with this herd and although I missed some in the middle of the video, (I can't stand seeing them mistreated) I saw him get very little of the life giving sustenance he truly needed. I hope he grew up to be a GREAT BULL and founded a herd of his own. GOD BLESS YOU BABY ELEPHANT.

The wildlife rangers and caretakers are trained to protect and take care of the animals and they will know what's need to be done.
The description says there was a ranger there.
@@tamfuwing1 Yup, i read the description too and I believe the ranger mentioned is probably a guide because normally a ranger officer won't be doing safari guide for the public visitors unless its his superior officer or a VIP doing a inspection work.
OK so why were they. Pushing the baby away?
There was a ranger present with the group of students.
When we checked with the experts at David Sheldrick they surmised the mum and tiny would have caught up with their herd
What an adorable baby elephant, they're all beautiful.
You can see the umbilical cord is still attached to the baby...very new baby elephant!
Also, it did not know how to use it's trunk yet. Really good fascinating video though.
I wondered what that was. So maybe the mother died in childbirth.
Who's Your Daddy? Yes and what I've seen of videos of newborn a. Elephants this one looks smaller than the average sized newborn. There's a lot of clearance under the Moms belly.
not his umbilical cord.....baby just well hung like an elephant..
After reading some other comments and re-watching, some things seem clear. There was more than one herd at the lake. The mother and calf pair were not part of either herd, and were being rejected in the efforts to join one herd. Interesting to note her distress at 9:00, when she wanted to follow the herd as they migrated around the lake, but couldn't leave the calf alone. He wasn't following. She gave up the effort to join, and stayed to protect her vulnerable calf. The herd left them, and they left the lake alone again.
Thank you
🙏Thank you🙏 ✍️ 🇮🇳
The baby was fine, no worries. The mom was trying to teach it to pay attention and listen to her. Something we seldom do as humans. After she risked her life to threaten two humongous hippos just because they got too close to her baby.
Beautiful.
Why did the younger ele close to the beginning go after the little baby...and the Mom? That was one sassy teen elephant!

It looks like the mother and baby are not part of that herd, hence the defensive reaction when they encounter the baby. The mother is definitely taking care of her baby. Bless the little cutie. 🥰

@@NikelaWildlife Just my take as I've watched the HERD channel where I've seen the 'Allo' mothers all take care of the cutest little orphaned elephant. The Mother is right there & is definitely keeping watch & helping. She is really tall & that baby so small. She even stood at angles where she looked like she was lowering her body so the baby could suckle (unfortunately it looks as if it can't). Other than that, I also agree w/the poster above about herds meeting & getting lost. I'm also in agreement w/you about Ellies not being aggressive except the bulls at times. Look closely. It’s still got its umbilical. It’s a brand new baby, very unsteady on its feet. Unlikely blind or ‘mentally defective’ as some are spouting off. Imagine being born and being expected to run with the herd five minutes later?! Also, baby elephants can take a few months to learn to use their trunks. They tend to put their faces right into the water to drink.
Tari Akpodiete actually baby elephants can’t even drink water yet. They rely 100% on moms milk
All elephant babies are born blind and then as time goes by their eyesight gets better, but elephant's in general have bad eyesight, they rely on their sense of smell instead.

no rejection, the baby want someone teach how live in the group. and the mother just learn how to take care the baby.

No the herd did not reject the baby. Sometimes too many at once cause confusion. But that doesn't mean they won't intervene to help. Those adults were only warning the baby to be careful as mommy thrust to drink. When the hippos came by distracted the herd, there goes baby in the deep. It's a learning experience. I think she is a first time Mother. She doesn't seem to know what to do with her tiny baby. She doesn't stand still long enough for her tiny baby to nurse. This was so stressful to watch! I was afraid the baby was going to drown and then I was afraid the hippos were going to get it. Mom was not very helpful through the whole thing. I'm stressed out now. Whew.
Animals know what they are doing..I think at times moms practice tough love, which is essential to push the baby to be more independent for survival. And the baby elephant never got stepped on, like the narrator said. That was a bit dramatic.
The baby is tiny & cute.
Thanks for sharing this remarkable footage! What I saw was a mother with good instincts - patient, helpful and protective, giving the baby time to gain some strength before following the herd. She even helped push him across the water and let him learn how to get back on the bank with just enough help from her. Too bad not all human mothers are as caring.
Mom is so thin! No extra nutrition~ No wonder baby feet have no strength~ God bless ♡🤗🤗🤗
this video reveals so much! the one thing that i did take away from this was even though the herd rejected the baby, that one elephant that was in the water with it saved its life from the herd of hippos!

Beautiful mom helping her baby
Was neat.
What a cute baby! Very small and young!
Love how Mama goes into uber defense mode and defends the calf from the hippos at 15:00. After watching this video again, I draw the conclusion that this cow and calf were not part of the herd at the water hole. That cow is looking for her herd which consists of her own mother, sisters, aunts, nieces and nephews. I don't know the reason, but sometimes pregnant cows will go through birth, having the calf alone and then have to find their herd after the calf gets "up to speed." This calf was relatively new born. I noticed as well that the mother had some sort of fluid filled pouch at her abdomen - that shouldn't be there. Hope all was well and they both found the herd/survived.
I believe this too bc at 4:24 that other elephant 🐘 charged the mother, then trampled the baby. At times the baby seems lost and confused, like he's looking for his mother! Maybe the mom is over producing milk and that's what the fluid filled sack is.
@@tawanabrown3650 thanks..
I think that this mother and calf ended up finding their herd (the herd that you mention). And when they did, everyone was so happy to see them that they had a party - nothing elaborate, just enough to celebrate their return (and let them know how much they were missed).
God bless them all thank you Jesus and praying for the babies

Personally, I believe this is a BRAND NEW-born baby.. seeing water (getting in it at least) for the first time, ALONG with mum..who must be feeling so good after a 2 yr pregnancy, and quite possibly a young mum's *1st baby?? Therefore, I think they were just enjoying the moment & a 'lesson' on slippery edges was being learned too. I believe the mum knew exactly where her herd was headed, and caught up with them. I don't think either mum or baby was 'left behind', etc. Soooo beautiful!! THANK YOU for sharing this video! 😊✌💫🐨

@@NikelaWildlife You're most welcome! Thanks again for sharing the footage! I live in Australia, so I would be so blessed to ever get to see these beautiful, wild gentle giants in their *natural environment! I'm so glad you got to. The 'hippos were hillarious'! 😂 I forgot to ask last time.. Do you know why the water pump was there? Were they draining the water away!?? Or 'adding' it, & if so..from where, etc.?? Thanks!! 😊
It was a very dry time during our visit so they were adding water to the waterholes everywhere. Sadly, that's what has to be done when wildlife movement is restricted by us humans.
@@NikelaWildlife 😟 .... That's what I suspected. It looks like central Australia, (so dry!) except with elephants. That's so amazing that they can do that, and are! Makes me think even more strongly, that it was the baby's first encounter with that waterhole, if not first waterhole ever!? 😊
She is a true mother herself.
First off, the baby was never stepped on. The elephant went to step off to the side and pushed the baby away so it wouldn’t be stepped on. You can project human emotions or actions onto wild animals. When the baby was in the water multiple elephants came by to help him if he wanted to get out. Then the mother came by and they played in the water, rinsing off, and the mother even protected the baby by chasing the hippos. You could see the baby is still trying to get milk from the mother and it is at the age where it’s transitioning to water as well. No one is neglecting the baby, and it’s not being abused. People get so sensitive over nothing because they treat animals as if they were humans. I’m 38 and while I keep my own kids close to me, likely too close, I remember my mother giving me way more space… they are wild animals
Thanks for commenting
Nice one. 😊☘️🇮🇪
I must've missed it!! All I saw was the poor tiny baby get stepped on. And none of the herd helping or even attempting to help mom and her baby, and the herd just walking away to leave mom to fend off hippos and get her baby outta the water to safety. The herd going one way and mom and her baby the other way.
You are wrong, the mother of the baby was getting pushed away from one in the heard. The little baby did his baby things in the water and wasnt noticing that. The one elephant out of the heard was chasing the mother around you see it when everyone was thinking they hunt the hippos, they did not hunt the hippos the elephant out of the heard was chasing the mother. The baby than tried to find his mother in the heard and was rejected. Seems like the mother tried to join the heard very slow and carefully but they had no interest for some reason.
Thank goodness for such a loving caring mama, and a very protective mama at that towards the hippos. It breaks my heart that none of the other elephants came to the mama and babys rescue. And I'm glad mama and her precious beautiful tiny baby went their separate way. 🐘🐘♥️

Infant elephant 🐘 still learning how to walk. Awwwe
Yup!
When it looked like the herd was chasing him, they were herding him away from the hippos, which are very territorial and a serious threat to that curious young fellow. Other than the hippo, that’s the safest place for them to be while he gains balance and strength. If the lions show up, there’s plenty of carnage lying around they won’t even have to hunt for!
Thanks for this.
That's motherly love. Good mama
I think the students made so much noise they scared the herd off. But the mother couldn't leave her calf. But the most pathetic part are the inept people who could have reported this but didn't. They should be fired.
Mom is a bit clueless, but is allowing the calf to nurse. Their bond will grow stronger over time.
There's still a bit of umbilical cord dangling off its belly. I think it's a newborn still unsteady on its legs, never been to a waterhole before and hasn't got a clue about anything.
Exhausted infant barely survived drowning in the slippery mud hole, getting killed by hit from other elephant herd and then hippo wanting to kill it. Newborn (I see a "pooch" still on momma from recent birth) with inexperienced mom. Thirsty new momma but infant very hungry too. Hope they made it. Sad too, all the elephants very dehydrated so thank you for who put in water source.

thats so sweet and so precious. the elephant is majestic, powerful, strong and meek. awesome animal
The mum DID NOT reject her baby; she seems to really love her baby a lot especially when she pushes the hippos awayWITH her tusk.9
The question has nothing to do with mum rejecting... it’s the herd that acted strangely.
I think this was pretty normal interaction for these complicated animals. Baby wasn't stepped on (he'd be dead if that were the case), baby was moved out of the way. And the mother appears to be attentive. Shouldn't be any problems for the newborn.
So cute little one baby elephan god bless you all family daling be save with mom darling ❤

Poor baby,,very inteligente and abandoned,God bless you baby orfan
The herd protected that baby. The one time that little one was alone at some distance, the entire herd moved to surround him. Otherwise, there was always an adult escort. When the hippos got too close, the adult chased them off, then scurried after the baby. When the baby slipped in the mud, the adult helped the little one regain footing. I would have been happier to see the baby nursing. Obviously it has been feeding because it had the energy to keep moving with the herd.
Thanks
The baby tried nurse in some parts of video. It is a newborn and I don't think that it is being rejected. The herd is nervous but we don't know why.
Completely misleading title of the video! If the calf was rejected it would not be allowed to walk with the herd or to suckle and it would be treated in a violent way, meaning stomped or attacked with tusks until it leaves the herd. Here the herd even helped the calf repeatedly to go back on its feet. There is a documentary "Fight for survival - Africa wildlife documentary" in which a calf is REALLY rejected. It got lost from its original herd and was attacked by other elephants whenever it was looking for company. At the end of the day it was eaten alive by hyenas while a lot of adult elephants were just watching. Not one of them tried to help the calf!
Thanks for your feedback @misanthrop we just called it as we saw it. No misleading intended at all.
NikelaWildlife okay, nevermind...
I saw in a different documentary several years ago (I don't remember the name), where a herd of African elephants actually adopted a baby male that they found abandoned. The new herd had tried to ignore him, but at the end couldn't resist his crying. In the documentary you saw, I wonder if there was something wrong with the calf. That could be why it was abandoned or lost in the first place, and no other elephants intervened.
I agree. I see no "rejection" going on here at all. Totally misleading clickbait title. Dishonest!
Sorry you see it that way. We saw the herd that mother and tiny had come in with leave without them. Plus there was this strange interaction at the waterhole where the whole herd seemed to chase the little one off.
I hope the baby is safe
👍👍
God please bless this sweet baby with a loving family! If not, take her into care so she can grow. Then live in a elephant habitat, where it may be able to join wild elephants. Just please keep her safe❤️💚💙💜😍
Your damn water pump was probably a communication interruption and stressor for the elephants.
Yup it is noisy. Water pump was from the game reserve. The wildlife is grateful for it though... without it no water to drink.
That baby elephant made me nervous. He's too curious and playful. But I like the way mamà elephant redirected him to keep him out of the hippos side.
What baby's do
There's a strong possibility that it belonged to a different herd, got lost and tried attaching to this herd. Elephants are often reluctant to adopt a lost newborn calf, despite having a reputation to do so, especially if they're already nursing calves of their own or if they're having trouble producing milk, due to a lack of food. I don't believe that the so called "mother" is actually the elephant calf's real mother because it doesn't even look like she's producing milk. You can clearly tell when a mother elephant is producing milk. I think this calf just attached itself to this elephant.
Interesting! Thanks
The baby tried to nurse several times.
I saw this b 4. At the end mum helps calf& let it suckle.
Mum needs 2 let baby nurse.
I just watched another video about a little elephant who was taken in at sanctuary. Angry villagers killed his mama right in front of him. He really became attached to his human caretakers. After one year he had taken a liking to other elephants around his age- but it took a few tries before he was willing to part from his humans.
Thanks. Always best to keep them in the wild if at all possible.
Look at the mama!!! Just look at her protecting her baby!!!! Elephant mothers are the best there is in my opinion and this mother was spectacular. Elephants are my "spirit animal" and this is just one of the many reasons I feel this way. Smart, caring, loving, considerate, kind, social and on and on and on. Aren't these massive, magnificent creations of Mother NATURE'S gifts to us?? You bet they are.
Glad you love those Ellies 😀
Amazing baby elephant
I would say that the mother and her calf had become separated from their family. Notice at the beginning of the film that they were separate to the arriving elephant family and that they did not leave with any family. Without the support structure of her immediate family the mother would have been stressed which would have greatly reduced her milk production. As a result the calf looks somewhat malnourished and is attempting to fill its belly with its attempts to drink water. The mother has an obvious abdominal hernia. That and her obvious affection for the calf, indicates to me that she is definitely the mother of this calf.
Thanks for your insights.
