We track a hungry but determined Polar Bear as it seeks to ambush a plump Seal. With the odds stacked against it, this scrawny looking Bear will need to pull off an amazing manoeuvre if it's to get a well earned meal.

    • @George Ramirez Far from the 2007 predictions of a 67% decline in global polar bear numbers, the new report reveals that numbers have risen to the highest levels in decades. The US Geological Survey estimated the global population of polar bears at 24,500 in 2005. In 2015, the IUCN Polar Bear Specialist Group estimated the population at 26,000 (range 22,000-31,000)7 but additional surveys published 2015-2017 brought the total to near 28,500. However, data published in 2018 brought that number to almost 29,5009 with a relatively wide margin of error. This is the highest global estimate since the bears were protected by international treaty in 1973. I accept your apology.

  • Her tactics on the approach were downright awesome! Amazing how they understand wind direction and how to avoid being detected because of it. Like there's a conscious understanding of it, like 1 + 1 = 2, which I find amazing for animals like this Polar Bear and big cats.

    @Anthovision@Anthovision2 жыл бұрын
    • The most successful angle to approach from, is the angle where you can smell your prey the best. Not only do you have a better idea of where it is, but it has the least chance of smelling you back.

    • I’m sure hunting when hungry also increases the polar bears’ hunting skills! Hunger pains aren’t pleasant…I believe humans are the only creatures who don’t hunt for food out of necessity. You’ll see outdoorsmen stop off for breakfast somewhere before going hunting or fishing.

      @marshalastovall4270@marshalastovall4270 Жыл бұрын
    • And my comment was for carnivores-because in the wild, animals that are carnivores can’t store their meats anywhere for very long without them rotting…so carnivores must only hunt when hungry.

      @marshalastovall4270@marshalastovall4270 Жыл бұрын
    • @@marshalastovall4270 I don’t think this is completely accurate. I mean they typically only hunt because they need food, but I don’t necessarily think they have to wait until they are hungry to do so. Some also kill/hunt due to being territorial as well. It certainly isn’t all food motivated, but yeah humans are probably the only ones that hunt for sport, but that hunting also helps to preserve areas by not allowing things like deer to overrun the area.

    • it's like diving off the blocks from the ice flow. I think the bear's far greater mass gave it more downward momentum back into the water compared with the seal?

      @ReVoltaire@ReVoltaire2 жыл бұрын
    • @@ReVoltaire It’s not momentum (mass * velocity), it’s only velocity that matters. Ya, maybe the bear had a good push off the ice to be fast enough to snatch the seal.

      @petemiller2920@petemiller29202 жыл бұрын
    • @@ReVoltaire I take it back. Maybe the bear’s larger mass does help it for a bit after it hits the water. a (deceleration) = F (drag force) / m (mass), so the bear’s larger mass means it decelerates slower (maintains its velocity better) than it would if it had a lower mass. But even though the seal has a lower mass, it has a different advantage - it may have a more streamlined body and thus a lower drag coefficient, and a smaller cross sectional area - factors which reduce its drag force and thus reduce its deceleration when it hits the water.
