Rare day time footage of an elephant preparing to take its first steps. Christian and Ginette Leroy were in the right place at the right time when they captured this amazing event while in Chobi National Park, Botswana. We thank them for sharing it with us and allowing the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust to post it online for everyone to enjoy this celebration of life.

    • @@user-xm3xy3ek8gI’ve seen countless videos of the opposite. They all protect the babies . True fact a baby elephant born to sisters have a higher survival rate than babies born to big brothers. The aunts and sisters all care and protect the most vulnerable. Giraffes 🦒 are similar. At night one giraffe will stay and babysit wile the other mother’s go forage. When one mother returns to take over babysitting so that the first mother can go forage and they all take turns. This was witnessed with night vision studies. The giraffe is more critically endangered than elephants.

  • What an exhilarating welcome into the world with trumpets and roars. Born among a sea of legs and trunks. It’s amazing how graceful they are. In all the many documentaries about elephants I’ve never seen a baby get stepped on. We can learn so much from them about how family should be. It my eyes they are much more evolved than us.

  • Gosh...love how the mom, dad, aunties, uncles, cousins, grandmas & pas gather around sounding their horns in celebration....so scared that they might step on the baby, but I guess they gather like that as an instict to protect the newborn...all those trucks pushing, touching, lifting, pulling him up for encouragement is so heartwarming to see...awwwwwww just sweet.

    • I doubt dad is anywhere around. Most herds are made up of all females and BABY males only. Bull males live lonely lives.

I think it's absolutely shameful that no expense is spared on these animals including private plane rides, round the clock medical , food and shelter yet many children of this nation don't make it til their 10th birthday from starvation and diseases we eradicated 50 years ago. A simple cheap vaccine, food and clean water. If all you people donating money for all these wild animals could stop and think about the human children, it could make a difference in this world. Who knows one of these kids could end cancer if given the right opportunity. What are these elephants goin. To return on your money? Think about it

    • The baby now will be 10 year old and it would be over 5 MT heavy ,about 25 - 30 times when it was born. A youth, considering that an elephant can live in forest.from 60 to 80 yrs.

    • xenowhore Not just predators, but also from baby elephant mom as well. As the mother, in her head she wonders what just fell of her body that moves, so naturally she wants to kill it. So the heard protects the baby and calms the mom down.

    • Scotty Boy I don't know much about elephants but I don't think that's the case. I've seen an elephant giving birth to her baby (alone) and desperately trying to help it breathe until he/she finally did. Then she kept pushing her baby to help it stand up (the same way they were doing it in this video)

    • they circle the mom when birthing starts, good idea where they are, seems anyone can feed the baby who was that an aunt, they don't eat their young or people, definitely better than the big cats. If that baby could have been born in a big home with a yard to know safety and softness from the start, he'd never know harshness.

    • @@tommas2674 You do know there’s no such thing as one animal is better than another? I mean elephants do kill people as well or even crocs. They just jump on crocs to kill. They’re very revengeful in that they never forget what happened to them. A mama elephant killed a crock that ate her baby. It happened before. And elephants have killed people before. They don’t eat people as they are not carnivores but there’s what’s called ecosystem of the wild. Everything is well balanced because there’s this ecosystem where carnivores do eat herbivores so that they don’t explode in populations that ruin vegetations in the wild. Your kind of thinking is exactly why we have the ecosystem on the verge of collapse as we humans have destroyed it by naively thinking it’s ok to favor one animal over another. This is exactly why if you step into a national park, you are NOT allowed to feed any animals or intervene any animals that may be dying unless they are endangered animals. In which case there are sanctuary for these endangered animals and protective programs to repopulate different areas of Africa where these animals used to flourish. Please do not favor one animal over another. You should study up on ecosystem and how each population is impacted when one is affected. Are you very young? Or from a third world country? I’m surprised such people exist that people don’t know the balance of the wild and ecosystem of nature. In here, even the little kids know as they get education in a class. By 10 years old you know the ecosystem in science class. Even a plant is under the intricate balance of the nature’s ecosystem.

  • It's amazing the support the other elephant's give to the new born baby elephant.....I noticed that with elephant's,with baby elephant's or toddlers,the adult elephant's all group together,protecting their young,it's a family affair

  • AMONG THE MAMALS , ELEPHANTS are incredibly intelligent, calm animal. They have enormous physical strength but still maintain a restrained behavior. Memory is superb even exceeds 80yrs old elephant can recognizes the when it was 5yrs old caring human. OBEDIENT AND LOYAL . poachers hunt them for their tasks .
