  • My dad was a former tanker in the 3rd Armored Division and a lover of the West and Westerns, that was passed onto me with Eastwood, Wayne, and more. He sadly passed suddenly this day two years ago, I have no doubt he'd have enjoyed you and the teams work keeping the spirit of the Old/Wild West alive.

  • As a retired Infantryman, thanks for the video! As for the depiction of Vets wearing parts of their uniforms, it may not be entirely inaccurate, but given the period it is probably implausible. The Old West was a bit different from modern times, and as stated in the video, Vets who'd seen extensive combat would probably have little more than threadbare remnants or tatters of uniforms left. The woolen uniforms of the era did not hold up like the sturdy dungarees, buckskin, canvas, and other stereotypical garments. Even modern uniforms and boots have a six-month service life expectancy. Granted, the niceties we have now, combined with a more comfortable "Army Day" for most Soldiers, means that uniforms can last years, but I can attest that they are virtually destroyed after two weeks in the field, and my DCUs were completely unserviceable within a few days of combat in Baghdad. Again, times have changed, and while a Civil War Vet might have seen one or two uniform issues, I still have brand new ACU, DCU, and OCP uniform components, along with field gear. If I pick up hunting, hiking, or even bird watching, you can bet this vet will be seen wearing some Army-issued pants and boots, along with the medium ruck or assault pack and maybe some load-bearing equipment. Then again, that doesn't exactly risk the ire of another American the way a Confederate or Union blouse might have in their fellow Americans' (and former enemies') mind.

  • Another excellent academic sound research made entertaining. Left me wanting more of this critical topic even though I accept that these videos need to be short and sweet. If others are also veteran minded, there is an ongoing traditional ritual that a veteran's ritual dance in regalia and drum group occurs before any pow-wow before the grand entrance. The dancers are often members of a Gourd Society which exists to purify the dance arena before the Grand Entrance parade of performers. The natives have a proud history of supporting US military. I was granted the rare privilege of joining one of these societies and danced for five heartfelt years. White society should honor the sacrifices freely accepted by all veterans. Many thanks for Santee to present the obscure origin of this important topic.

    • @@ritashuff7136 It's an honor to get r response from the oft mentioned Mrs. Santee. I know well the busy schedules of movie/TV folk, I grew up playing around the old set. I remembered some audience drawing activities which used to occur at the set during non-shooting film days. The UA Aggie students would have a Saturday mini rodeo with strong metal fencing and places for families to spread a blanket and picnic while watching. Other venues feature weekend of ranch life skills - leather rope making, harness repair, horse shoeing, always popular open spit barbecuing. There are also Buffalo Soldier re-enactors, fast draw contests, Native drum groups with dancers in regalia (costume), fiddle string band square dancing, cowboy ballad singing, cowboy poetry performances . . .the list is endless. Saturday used to be family Event days. Also, an interesting possibility is to feature a scheduled pow-wow with native vendors, drum groups, competitive dancing with a native emcee - they do love to talk. An inside joke is never give an Indian a microphone! Lots of possibilities. These all would apply to the vast effort to restore Mescal movie set. One caution - The Buffalo Soldier re-enactors wanted to stage events with native groups, but the natives refused due to the Buffalo Soldiers gaining fame by slaughtering women and children. History just isn't forgotten. Native tribes still have raw memories of bitter conflicts with other tribes. History is interesting but often still raw.

  • Thank you for covering Veterans Day. As a child it meant a big parade in town. Later during the Vietnam era I fully came to understand the horror and sacrifice that soldiers see and die for. It is a very important day especially since we are loosing all our WWII Vets. Soon they will be like the Civil War Vets: all gone. We are also loosing our Vietnam War Vets. Remember we loose aprox 16 to 22 Vets a day due to PTSD. This cost is too high. Thank you all for your service then and now.

  • As a former active duty Marine '75 -'77 thanks for the tribute. I've read somewhere one of the reasons the wild West may have been so wild in certain locations at certain times may have had to do with Civil War combat veterans with PTSD. I have yet to see a scholarly research paper on this. One of the problems I have had with Hollywood depictions of a town being terrorized by an individual or small gang. Having known Combat Veterans such as my two Grandfathers from WW 1, I can see a group of combat veterans taking the law into their own hands or ropes as sometimes happened. Thanks for the tribute and Semper Fi.

  • Great video Santee. When I used to live in Bozeman MT, I would give history tours through the town cemetery and always highlighted the graves with GAR written on them. For a time the Grand Army of the Republic sponsored veterans to settle and establish communities on the frontier, resulting in towns being named after generals and battles (like Gettysburg SD). I now do presentations for schools on the Grand Army of the Republic and always love finding photos of the group from towns on the frontier and showing just how important groups like the GAR were in the old West. Even here in San Antonio there was a branch of the GAR.

Many westerners served in the war, particularly with Teddy Roosesevelt's Rough Riders (1st US Volunteer Cavalry). After the war, many returned home. Their annual convention was held in Las Vegas for many years, starting in 1899.The last Rough Rider to die was Ralph Waldo Taylor, who died May 15, 1987 at 105 years old.

It’s the Holiday we call “Memorial Day” now. It had different dates and differing legends about where and when it began but one of the early stories is that the Confederate widows and survivors all came out to put flowers on their loved ones graves at Arlington but the Union soldiers moved them onto Union soldiers graves Then that night a strong wind blew all the flowers back onto the Confederate graves.

  • Another group of Civil War veterans were the likes of William J. Brady, Emil Fritz, Lawrence G. Murphy, and James J. Dolan. These first three had been successive commander's of Fort Stanton, near Lincoln, New Mexico. Murphy, Fritz and Dolan were all partners in the infamous Santa Fe Ring funded business monopoly in Lincoln, known as the House. But Fritz and Murphy already had a history of pilfering supplies at Fort Stanton and making a side business out of that before being booted and setting up again in Lincoln. Brady, as Lincoln County Sheriff, became little more than a lackey who acted as Enforcer for the House. He bought his ranch with a House loan, and willingly acted outside of the law, hiring known murderers as deputies and was even called out for obvious perjury in a federal investigation. None of these men lived to see age 50, interestingly.

  • All these veteran of the civil war moving west reminded me that one of the things often missed about war is the changes of circumstances it can bring for those who took part in it. People who may have spent their whole lives living in the same location and doing the same job see things differently after the war and will make changes. In Britain before WW1 many people upon leaving school would get a job and work for the same company all their adult lives. After the war many would go back to their old line of work but for others decided on a fresh start. Many would start their own businesses and by the 1920s there were one million corner shops, shops found on street corners, in England. Many of which were owned by people who had served in the war and wanted to change their lives. I was just looking up a word which I hope you will find interesting. The word was coined by a fellow American of yours, Franklin P. Adams, is "aptronym" and means a name that fits. So William Cannon being an artilleryman is an aptronym. The word is sometimes spelled "aptonym",

  • There was a Union Captain from New York, I'm drawing a blank on his name, was captured and taken to the Andersonville Prison Camp in Georgia. Survived the gulling time there and after the war would be the Commandant of the camp no housing Confederate Troops awaiting trials. After that he returned home to New York and was hit by a yellow cab in the 1920s while crossing the street.

  • Alfred Packer: He served his fellow man. It never made a lot of sense to me that a bunch of cowboys could "hooraw" a town like they do in so many Westerns. Those settlers fought the elements, they fought in the War between the States or even foreign wars...not to mention the Natives...I doubt a bunch of cowboys were going to scare them.

  • So very very awesome and interestingly informative video, I really liked and enjoyed it and got a lot of inspiration for my old West inspired dark sci-fi horror, paranormal and retrofuturism short story and series I’m writing. In my story and world, going to both lawmen and veterans. During the events in my story, there’s going to be a battle between the humans and the hostile alien civilization known as the Dracovans as well as the cult tribe known as the Yunta tribe/BloodMoon Colossus Cult. One of the veterans in my story is a man named Lioah Westlan, who goes by the name Lua Wes/Louna Wes. His son is Luriilin Moon (Loa Moon) and his daughter is Zillow Moon (Zeldie Moon). Also in my story and world the firearms are going to be video games inspired such as video game Light guns/Zapper guns, HookShot ArrowGuns and Hydro Cannon guns as well as others. The hostile alien civilizations will be the outlaws in my story, space outlaws and the lawmen will be space lawmen and paranormal investigators.

  • Both sides of the Civil War conscripted huge chunks of the male population. Not only that, European wars from the 1848 Revolutions to the 1870 Franco-Prussian War fed a steady stream of immigrant veterans. It was probably harder to find a guy in the Old West who wasn't a veteran than one who was.

  • It feels so weird to see people wishing each other a 'happy' Veterans' Day. In Australia, it's called Remembrance Day and it is a quiet, solemn day of reflection and introspection. Just like our ANZAC Day. We don't celebrate the horrors of war and the sacrifices of our defence members.

    @theuglywolf2536@theuglywolf25365 ай бұрын
    • We aren't celebrating the horrors of war either. We are celebrating the fact that veterans served their country bravely and couragously. Their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to scarifice for that country.
