  • The first time I heard the term "toilet water" I was probably round age 11 Christmas shopping with my father in the pharmacy in town. I asked him what he thought I should buy for my Aunt and he replied " Just get her a bottle of toilet water." Without missing a beat I said " Do you have a fancy bottle at home I can use?"

  • Oh the stench of it all . . . out on the coast, the natives (chumash) at the mission would greet the “expeditions” from Mexico with these small pillows made from sewing scraps about 1.5” X 1.5” filled with sage. They would hold them against their noses so they wouldn’t have to smell the stench from the arriving party members. They must have been ripe after months on the trail. Excellent video Santee!!

  • Ambergris! I've been bingeing The Pirate History Podcast for the last few months, and that's something that the buccaneers would collect when they weren't roving. They didn't know where it came from, just that it was used in perfumes. There were theories that it was discharge from beehives, or from a tree. Also, this video made me remember (and going off of memory here) the scene in The Young Riders when The Kid put on some cologne and walked over to Lou (who was a girl passing herself off as a boy). Lou sniffs and says, "You smell like a wh*rehouse." "What? ... How would *you* know that?" "I know a lot that you don't know about," and tells him to get back to grabbing the supplies they came to the store for. Cody walks over and asks Kid, "Something wrong?" sniffs, "Woo! Nobody light a match!" Kid walks over toward Jimmy, who sniffs and then starts trying to wave the scent away.

    • @@greghardy9476 Interesting!

      @ArizonaGhostriders@ArizonaGhostriders2 ай бұрын
    • @@greghardy9476 I might have an answer for you, but it's complicated because of the differences between the different colonies and their home countries. In the case of the English and French colonies, they usually set up joint stock companies to administer and run certain parts of the colonial economy and government. So anything that was brought in (slaves, glass, paper, etc) or taken out (ambergris, logwood, sugar, etc) was supposed to be through those company contacts to ensure that the company would make a profit. The companies would usually have royal backing, so cheating the company was the same as cheating the sovereign. So while a buccaneer could collect the ambergris, they had to sell it to the company contact in the colony, who'd have it shipped back to Europe to be processed into perfume. But they could take it to a different colony (each island was run on its own) if they thought they would get a better price. Spain, however, had more of a tight grip on their holdings, with everything being held in the name of the monarch, and everything having to be passed up or down the chain from centralized locations. They didn't want outside traders bringing in or taking out any goods, and if they caught you, it was rough.

    • Read an history of human personal relations written in the 1970s. The writer recorded studies of perfume. Seems if a person wears the same underwear for a week, exercises pretty hard and doesn’t shower the underwear male or female will get a scent to it. But all the perfumes that are most successful have way down in the scent trail, only discovered on chemical analysis is that same smell. We don’t smell it consciously but when we sniff perfume down deep in our subconscious our most sensitive olfactory sensors picks out that smell and our subconscious likes it.

They would buy the ingredients while in Port and put it all in a big container to cure while the ship was on mission. We made a batch using the recipe and it worked really well, might not have the same longevity of modern fragrances, but I still like to splash some on now and then

    • Fun fact. The reason Americans started bathing every day was due to a propaganda campaign by soap manufacturers in the early 20th century. Their sales had steadily increased all through the 19th century due to the average income also increasing, but by the turn of the century pretty much everyone could afford soap so their sales flattened out. So to increase sales they all got together and ran ad campaigns to convince the American public that if they didn't bathe every single day they were disgusting. In reality unless you are engaging in particularly sweaty labor or the weather conditions result in the same, bathing once a week is perfectly sufficient to keep you from stinking.

  • The first time I really became aware of ambergris was in the 1980's reading about some of it floating up on the beach, probably in the 1800's, and the locals thought it smelled so bad they piled it up and burned it; too late did they learn it was worth more than their weight in gold!!! Then later I bought the only season of "The Buccaneers" TV show starring Robert Shaw, before he started hunting big fish. I watched it when I was a kid in the '50s and saw then they did have an episode about ambergris; they called it "whale gold," hence my username for KZhead. Always wondered if anyone knew where it came from.

I remember a school fieldtrip in either elementary (my dear Santee...lol) or middle school, where we went to a famous city park right here in San Jose, ca. where we all got assigned nicknes by the ranger and they explained how people of the 1800s would use different things in nature. Like there was a plant root that you could use as soap. I dont remember the other nicknames but mine was "cowboy cologne" and it was a certain plant or leaf that cowboys would rub on themselves to smell good!

  • ambergris only coming extremely rarely from a highly hunted species on the verge of extinction made it hugely expensive…so cheap alternatives were developed because of it giving rise to most of the fragrances that we know today the old west folks would have hated knowing what was in the expensive French stuff, their homemade smells were better anyway!
