None of my History teachers growing up, made learning as enjoyable as Arizona Ghostriders has. Great video Santee!
That's awesome!
Yeah!!! What THEY SAID ::::::pointing above::::::
I don't think we'll ever really know some of the truths behind the legends, but it's so good to see there are still those seeking it out. I think it makes it all the more interesting..
Yes, it is very interesting.
As someone who attempts to write historically based westerns this is pure gold. Thank you for introducing me to David and his books. I will add these to my very large and distinguished to be read pile of books.
Yes!
I’m loving the longer videos & everything you’re doing with them lately. You’ve taken this to a whole new level here Santee.
Yay! Thank you! I've been able to devote a little more time into making them longer, so....averaging about 2-3 minutes more than last year.
This channel is just vastly underrated. Thank you for all the amazing content!
I appreciate that!
Excellent episode. I as well have a BS in History and a Masters in Library and Information Science. Very cool to hear his process. Keep up the great work Santee!
Thank you!
Same here. And it does drive you to look for the truth behind the myth.
I really enjoyed this episode. I write historical fiction (set in the early 1870's), so I know how much research goes into writing about times past. There are tons of places to find info but determining what is true is difficult. Thank you Mr. Grasse. And you Santee.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Much appreciated!
That was very good, it's great hearing about and from people researching real history. Mentioning Holbrook made me think of something. I know it's not the old west but Route 66 is part of western history and much of it follows the routes of old trails. What about an episode about the trails that turned into Route 66? That would nicely tie some old west history into early/mid 20th century history.
Thanks, I hope to do that one day!
What a great idea!!
I love the true stories of the West. A lot of times they are more fascinating and bold and daring than the myth. I love Santee and the gang. Great job!
Glad you like them!
"This is the West sir. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend"
Yep
It's very rare to watch an interview where the interviewee is being interviewed by an interviewer that was shot so many times by the interviewee. Very trusting interviewer.
I actually followed that!
@@ArizonaGhostriders It took several takes in the writing room to get it right :)
@@oregonoutback7779 🤠
Great video interview, I will check out his book!
Much appreciated!
Now I have more books to read. Outstanding. Many thanks.
Excellent!
Great episode. Very good points about "printing the legends" in history. Will look up his books. Bring a dentist to a gunfight. That was hilarious. 🤣
I thought so. Thank you!
@@ArizonaGhostriders : Well, yeah...but what a dentist to bring! Made "cavities," didn't fill 'em.
@@henryrodgers1752 True.
Considering Sir Thomas Mallory (while in prison) took stories and legends and created the “definitive” history of King Arthur in the 15th Century, why wouldn’t we continue to do it 400 years later. Life in the old west was hard, and reading the dime novels about Wyatt, Bat, et al, was entertaining.
Yep. However, like King Arthur, we lost what the real history of it was, and historians had to correct it.
I concur with a few of the other comments that have been written here. If indeed the public school systems would accept how mundane and dreary the status quo lesson plans have become and opt for more entertaining and interactive forms of communicating the same material students would no doubt take a more serious interest in whatever is being taught. The Ghostriders slap stick Monty Python approach works well for myself and the effects of the learning disability I have.
Yeeehawwww!! Wait....I thought I was being serious....?
As a Western Author. I try to be accurate with events, people, and Old West History. So, I enjoyed David Grasse's talk. Thanks, Santte!
You're Welcome.
This was a great interview. I enjoyed how much emphasis was placed on telling the stories of these men/incidences correctly. I agree as well with wondering why certain "outlaws" began their so called careers. Thanks Santee.
Thanks for listening
Fascinating interview! More! More!
Thank you!
Great episode, Santee. One of your best. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work.
Thank you!
I really like hearing about the people of the old west ...GREAT
Thank you!
What a terrific interview. Always enjoy hearing about history 🤠
Thank you!
Thanks for letting me know about this author. Will definitely look for his books. Another great one . Jane

"What is the process?" great question...that is what I am interested in to is to how to put ideas and research to paper.
I've included some links that will get you to David, who should be able to answer your questions.
This was great to watch, and thank you for "the man who shot liberty valance" clip! Time to watch a favorite movie once again. Waiting for more!

Thoroughly enjoyed this episode. I like it when I get pointed to an author I don't know writing about people and events I don't know. Thanks guys. 😎🏴

David is a really nice guy, he came down to our first meeting we had for our civil war re-enactment group here in Globe, Arizona, I gotta tell you that his knowledge for the west is superb and did I mention that he's a really nice guy?

When I first started watching your channel I liked it but I didn't get the t Rex at all. Then my four year old daughter saw the t Rex. Now she asks to watch the ones with the dinosaurs. Thank you keep up the great work. My nerdy family loves your sense of humor.
That is awesome! BTW, there is a video in the description field called "Ghostrider Q & A" which explains Rex.
I volunteered with the Arizona Historical Society in Tucson and had a grand time. Through the Society I became friends with the then premier US wagon maker Douglas Thamert in Patagonia AZ. He accepted a federal museum commission to recreate an important freight wagon used in the extensive trade between Tucson and Sonora Mexico. He used the designs and techniques of that era to build the wagon. I painted it to his instructions to match the livery of that era. The amusing context is during that era the Mexican government doubled the tax on each gringo wagon entering Sonora. Not to be outsmarted the gringos adopted the new wagons of which the federal commission paid for the new example which had never been documented. The wagon was the solution to the doubled tax rate because the new wagon was twice the size of the older ones! Ain't history grand?
That's amazing!
There was a book my family had when I was young with lots of stories about old west gunfighters with great color illustrations and Commodore Perry Owens was featured in there, I guess I’m unusual that I knew so much about him as a child.
I think I had that book, too.
Another awesome video!!!! Catching up and having a marathon today!!!!
get out the whiskey!
This is History the rest is legend! Thus one can live with out the other?! Perhaps! But it healps put the two together! Thanks for another great vid Santee. See ya down this trail.
Thank you!
One of my favorites. As the official state historian, Marshall Trimble would make for a very interesting episode. I really enjoyed this. I am going to have to check out his books. Thanks, Santee !
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great learning and entertainment all in 1. Thanks for your hard work.
You're welcome. Much appreciated.
I like how you point out that many authors just repeat incorrect information. Funny story about some monks who spend their days writing out the rules of their order. Once a page is done it becomes the one that is copied and the one they copied from is given away. One day a new monk asked, "how do we know we are not repeating a mistake if we are making a copy of a copy,. The head monk saw the logic and went to look at the original made by the founder of the order and kept safely put away so it won't get damaged. He is gone for a while so the others become concerned and go looking for him. They find him crying and just saying over and over "we forgot the R we forgot the R". Very puzzled they asked "what do you mean". The old monk replied "it is supposed to be CELEBRATE".
HAHAHAHAH!!
Now that's true history, I've learned something 😳
@@jakeroberts7435 Good! Glad to help.

Great guest. I would like to see other segments with him. Question: Was the " F Word " in Common use in the old West? Best Wishes from Montana M.H
The F word was definitely used.
I may show this to one of my classes about the research process. Always a hard thing to teach.
It is. Let me know if I can help.
Hi Santee. Love your videos on the old west. I've truly learned alot about the lives of some of America's Heros and outlaws from your Arizona Ghost Riders video. The only complaint I have with the videos is the audio sounds is not loud enough. I have my volume up as high as it will go and it's still kind of low. Could you get your audio crew to turn up the volume? Thanks so much and.....we'll see you on down the trail.
Glad you like them! I check my audio with studio headphones and computer speakers, and then KZhead does something with it during it's compression. But I will try.
Ive got to read this guy's books.
Good!

Glad you like it.
Another excellent video Santee, once again historical truth is better than fiction. Although, I don't blame people of the era overly portraying events, as most people tried to make a buck out of everything by telling the story thier way to the newspapers. This is why I don't trust the newspaper to tell events as is, as historical fact, nor do I trust "novels" of the era also "tell a more colourful depictions" of the era. In my case it was, family passing the history from generation to generation and from thier diaries of the era (which to me is the best knowledge of events) eventhough the events could be clouded by personal relationships to events, it tells us how they think and spoke about events.
Thank you! Much appreciated.
Very awesomely awesome, very interesting and intriguingly informative video , I really loved and enjoyed it. Great job and well done on fantastically great video. I got a lot of inspiration for the old west inspired novel series I’m writing. That will be a mix of the old west and the hyperborea, Atlantis and lemuria mythological history.
Thank you very much!
@Arizona Ghostriders thanks and your welcome 🌟😎👍🏼 Today I’ll be working on how to combined the old West with the mythological history of hyperborea,Atlantis and Lemuria for my book
Honestly, I say I'd personally have to thank western video games for getting me watching this channel. Heck, I think the first few videos I got recommended by youtube were your Red Dead Redemption 2 videos and I've been a viewer ever since. And thus interested in the old west. RDR2 wasn't where it started for me though. I played the 1st game long before I ever touched the sequel. And before that, it was Gun. And before THAT, it was Red Dead Revolver. I'm not sure if I'd recommend them today, since I admit some of them aged gameplay wise. (Revolver and Gun mostly.) But they're all fantastic games that I believe deserve a play if you're into western based media. Gun especially, they had like, actual western movie people working on that game. And the craziest part? It was made by the people who made the TONY HAWK GAMES. Yes, a company that made skateboarding games decided out of nowhere one day "You know what? Let's make a western open world game!" and so they did! Pretty well too. They got some well known actors on-board too. Not to undersell Revolver either. Though, Gun is closer to the future Redemption games gameplay wise. (Would like to specify, while the Redemption games and Revolver are made by Rockstar. Gun is made by Neversoft.) Which is crazy considering it came out years before. But yeah, it was mostly the games that got me interested in the history. Most of my experience with the movies is Clint Eastwood stuff. (Which I know isn't always accurate. lol.)
I'm glad. That's how I felt about Cowboy Action Shooting. Just needed more than shooting at steel targets.
I do want to add though CONTENT WARNING for Gun, if on the off-chance anyone reading this comment does check it out. (as unlikely as it is.) It is VIOLENT. And also doesn't pull it's punches with the racism. Infact it got criticized at the time for doing so. Buuuut, unfortunately it was merely a fact of the time sadly. But yeah, just saying. JUST INCASE, it does contain those themes. (It's not like glorified or anything though so there's that. Most of it comes from the bad guys I think.) Native americans are a central part of the plot. Can't say much without spoiling the plot though. So, I leave it at that.
Pleasant surprise to see David Grassé interviewed on the channel! I was so excited last year to see someone was actually writing a book on Augustine Chacon. He was always my favorite Old West legend and I thought it was a travesty that no one ever compiled all of his exploits in a proper biography. Needless to say, I was pretty disappointed to find that a *legend* is exactly all his exploits were, but nonetheless I loved the book.
Much appreciated!
Very interesting video!!
Thank you!
Dime store novels and guy that blew their own horn like Earp and Garret helped build legends.
Yep
Beyond the legends and myths lie the plain historical facts. While the first can be very entertaining, i think It's a good thing to focus on the latter every now and then :-) Greets from the Netherlands 🌷, T.

I forgot to comment on this episode, but is better late than never. I'm an educated historian and librarian, but has mostly worked as an archivist at a court. I can't open a history book without checking out the sources for the author.
Awesome. So you and David are kindred spirits!
@@ArizonaGhostriders I guess you can say that.
Hey Arizona Ghost Riders, have you made a video on security/guard companies in the old west?
Not yet. Thanks!
Excellent Episode .... reinforces an earlier comment of mine that going a bit more indepth, longer episode will work for you!
Thank you, but the average watch time is still 3:26. LOL!
Great interview. Those stories were great for selling newspapers, a flashy headline or juicy story will get you a lot more buys(just look at the National Enquirer!) and sure help build up your reputation as an outlaw if you were looking for that kind of fame but I think a lot of times the real story of the person is far more interesting.
Yes!
Has David Graase ever come across a man named Jim Hathaway. He was a Deputy Sheriff around Douglas, AZ I believe around the1923'S or 30's. He was written about in some of the old pulp police and Western magazines around that time. I had clippings of the articles to read. They were lent to me by his son in the late 1960's to read along with a rough manuscript with memories of his close friends and his own childhood memories and memories of family. His last gunfight was in the early 1950's as an older man. I believe I it took place in Salinas, CA. I have seen the newspaper clipping of the day he was cleared in court for the killing due to self defense. He actually "Invaded" Mexico in the 20's or early 30's. I don't remember whether he was working for the law in Arizona or Texas at that time. He was trying to track a Mexican outlaw who had murdered and robbed an older well known and popular Mexican lady on the boarder. She was known to take in and help down and out folks at her boarding house from both sides of the boards and get them on their feet. Jim went undercover into Mexico found the outlaw over powered him handcuffed himself to the bad guy and tried to leave. The outlaw lived in a town and the folks in the area formed a mob then turning into a riot. Hathaway defended himself by shooting warning shots with his own and the outlaws pistols. The horse mounted authorities showed, luck would have it the Commander was a friend of Jim. Jim had to explain that this was the guy who murdered the Mexican lady. No problem they escorted Jim and the Outlaw across the Border with friendly advice not to do it again. Many years later in the late 60's I got to shoot an old Colt .45 that had ivory grips from the outlaws gun and the pistol was one of ones owned by Jim Hathaway. Jim's son was Howard Hathaway. He was an Officer in WW2 and saw action in North Africa. Howard became a Veterinarian and retired Here in Idaho. I believe he died in the early 80's. Jim Hathaway sounds like a man that deserves to be remembered in a book.
I'm sure you could ask him on one of his pages listed in the description field
@@ArizonaGhostriders thanks I appreciate your channel. I've been a history buff most of my life in particular U.S. history. Like Louis L'Amour said "The West was wilder than you could write it." Much of what happened never got into a written record.

Here’s the setting of the old West inspired novel series I’m writing, which is: The old west frontier archipelago called the Outland islands. The largest of the somewhat mountainous islands is the island of Hyperborealis that is connected to the island of Atlantemuria by a land bridge plateau called the Beringia land bridge, where the nomadic Beringian people live, before moving back and forth between the two islands.
