  • I just had to say this. Your 800mm pre-production review has been more real-world than any of the others given the opportunity. Much more relatable and to the point. Thank you Matt. Well done.

  • Hello Matt, I think this lens looks amazing and from what I am seeing a step away from the old style long telephoto lenses. Keep up there development of PF lenses, I know that I have and love both the 300mm PF and the 500mm PF but this one will just remain a fantasy lens for my. I think it will be price to go at around £5500 or there about, not like to 400mm f2.8 but that is a different type of street lens. Unlike your self I do not do much street photography but in your hands this dose just look the part of a street photographers kit. :). Keep week, keep safe and continue having fun.

  • One point of reference that I didn’t hear mentioned in the video. The 800mm f6.3 with the 2x teleconverter closes the f-stop down to f13. Drop in a polarizer and light transmission falls into the neighborhood of f16, and even with the 1.4x, the lens is stopped down to f9 at it’s widest. Which doesn’t detract from how remarkable the lens is for the money, but at the same time, this is mostly a strong daylight lens, not necessarily a combination which will work well for birding in jungle conditions (for instance) and other relatively low light scenes.

Oh, although I have the previous Nikkor 800, I'm buying this new one for my Z9's. I'm trying my best to expunge all things "Manfrotto." • I am the lucky owner of the 400mm 2.8 z with the 1.4. teleconverter inside and I also have a 2x teleconverter. I use this on the Z7 II . I noticed that with the 2x teleconverter the autofocusing looked slower, or actually less speedy because it's so fast. I presume you will test that also with the 800mm . I look forward to a side to side test with the 400mm + 2x telec and the 800 mm.

  • Wonderful presentation of a wonderful lens. Wish I could think of a more powerful word than mere wonderful. These new lenses from Nikon are likely to delight professionals, but I really don’t have opportunities to use them to best advantage, nor frequency. I’m waiting for the non-S 200-600 to go with my 24-200 non-S but superb lens on my little Z6ii. I think that will be it for me, especially if Nikon sets the price sensibly. Else, a Sigma Contemporary 150-600 will do fine. Likely to lose another summer waiting for Nikon, which at my age does not please me.

  • Hi Matt, your preview made me call my local dealer and preorder a copy. You took an interesting approach with the portraits, a huge compliment to Ash, she’s a fantastic model. I need this lens for birding and wildlife. So I‘m a bit worried about the 6.3 aperture, but more importantly about the speed of the autofocus. So what is your feeling regarding its speed compared to the 400 f2.8? By the way, kudos for your nice and in depth reply to the criticism on nikonrumors 👍

    @enricoforster5309@enricoforster53092 жыл бұрын
  • For me, this lens is a higher priority than upgrading my Z6ii to a Z9. The way I see it is, photographers have managed to capture better images with older/less advanced cameras than the Z6ii but it is more difficult to substitute/compensate for reach or optical quality. My guess is between 5 and 6k in Euroland which is a lot, but since gas and food have both gotten too expensive to buy, gotta spend my money on something, right?

    @t.k.1448@t.k.14482 жыл бұрын
  • Great first look, Matt. Rumoured to be in the $6000 range which would make it $7500CAD. After all the demands the Z9 has put on my budget, I guess I'll be sticking with my modest 70-200 w/ 2x teleconverter for the time being. Maybe the 100-400 would be an option. Glad that Nikon gave you a chance to check out this amazing lens.

    @RaymondParkerPhoto@RaymondParkerPhoto2 жыл бұрын
    • Thanks Ray, yeah there is something pretty uncanny about the reach of this lens, with the size to weight ratio, along with just the handling and balance between the camera and lens. To me it certainly feels like a lot of effort is going into making the combination of lens and camera feel as good, as balanced, as unified, as possible. It is an amazing achievement in my mind for 800mm, which becomes 1600mm with very little change in handling, with the addition of the 2 x TC. Sublime. :) Take care and hopefully next week we can catch up.

      @MattIrwinPhotography@MattIrwinPhotography2 жыл бұрын
    • Raymond, if you are correct about the price, I think there is a 600 coming that should be more affordable. Would love to see what you would do with either. And, I suspect Vancouver Island presents more opportunities than Toronto. Stay well.

I would think the motors in this lens are not the new ones with the magnets that are in the 400 due to the anticipated price difference. Glad you had fun with it but I think I'm sticking with my 500 PF w/ 1.4 tele when I need it, the cost of this lens will be much less than the 400 but still too high for me. • Great video Matt. Very exciting times ahead for Nikon. The quality is there, but supply issues in the industry will be a worry for all brands and who is the quickest to get products on shelf. • @@MattIrwinPhotography Matt, sorry if I missed the "artistic comment", but it did make me wonder if the lens/body combo was doing something horribly wrong. As for the Moon shot, I don't have an 8K monitor, but I recognize that lunar astrophotography is hard, and making a (near) full phase Moon pic not look flat and gray is pretty hard.

  • The best part of your "reviews" is you keep it real. Specs are fun, but seeing is believing. Did you try bolting that beauty on a 7II as well? For those of us that will never be able to afford both a Z9 and that gorgeous 800mm stovepipe!!!

    • As a prop I popped it on the Z7 for shooting the teaser trailer, but I never actually shot anything with it. ( kzhead.info/sun/edOJYKuhr5Sqoo0/bejne.html just in case you have not seen it ) and I added the grip extender to make it look like a Z 9 in shadow, as we needed my Z 9 to get the 4K 120 FPS. So we will have to wait for the Official launch to test it out on all the Z cameras, how about on the ZFC, native 1200mm !!!!

  • Watched Moose Peterson give a seminar on the Z9 and he says the Z9 produces black and white images like no other camera he's used -- your thoughts? That moon video is ridiculously good! Wow. And portrait photography with an 800! Just fab! You rock.

    @merkin22@merkin222 жыл бұрын
    • Thanks Steven, 3 months into the Z 9 I am still finding the limits of its capabilities. As for black and white I have not specifically explored it. Did Moose talk about how he makes his black and whites? In camera, or in post production? Cheers Matt

    • @@MattIrwinPhotography He wasn't speaking specifically to b&w but about settings he uses and encouraged as a no brainer the use of Adobe RGB, and in that context said b&w out of the camera was the best ever. Related (I think; I'm a technical idiot) he did mention in passing he uses "Charcoal" in creative picture control (and "standard" in picture control). I'm not done the series yet and he may have said "more about that" re b&w and I'll report back if he goes there :)

  • While the lens is incredible, and incredibly well controlled as all Z glass seems so far, what I can see as an owner of the 300 F4 PF is some tell tale fresnel element onions when you shoot into the sun [1:23 helicopter, look left]. To be expected, and somewhat impossible to get rid of. Everything else... wow, what a lens !

  • Looks awesome. If the $6000.00 U.S. price of the lens is correct, then this lens with a Z9 is about ½ the cost of a Canon R3 and the Canon 800 combo. I love the direction Nikon is going!

  • Cool lens, love the concept in terms of price/weight/size/optics. However, here I am, sitting in a train, my mountain bike in the cargo car, and I wish that AF-P 70-300E would go native Z, a bit smaller and lighter...

    @marcusbraun8889@marcusbraun88892 жыл бұрын
    • @Photo Bunny Nah, it's about 2-3cm longer, wider, and 830g vs 1430g. Bottom line is the 70-300 just fits my handlebar bag WITHOUT the FTZ attached. 100-400 Z, no way, I wanna go smaller and lighter. Eventually Nikon will come up with something suitable for me, perhaps a pendant to the extendable lenses like the 14-30/24-70. Whatever it will be, until then I will use the 70-300 as a stop gap, got it almost new for $370, sold the 70-200 f2.8.
