Kirk Enterprise Solutions LP 72SG foot for Nikon Z 800mm f6 3 VR S lens, installation and review.

The LP 72SG foot is longer than the Nikon foot which really helps with balancing the 800mm on a gimbal, but the longer foot does not interfere with the Z9 grip or the ability to store the 800mm hood on the lens backwards.

    • Before I retired, I was a full time photographer working in journalism/PR and the longest lens I used was 300mm. The 800mm PF lens is amazingly light weight and sharp, I can't help but think of all the photos I could have made if this lens existed sooner. From time to time one or two will show up for sale on Nikon's Refurbished webpage, snag one if you can!

  • Thanks so much for this video. I ordered and received the plate in 4 days. Well packaged and great looking foot. Will install ASAP. Thanks again. I also ordered the new Nikon 180-600 lens and awaiting arrival. I am hoping this foot will also work on that new lens. If not, I will look to Kirk for an updated foot for that lens.

    • @realnikonlover6207 I'm glad the video helped you decide to get the Kirk foot for the 800mm. I finally got to spend a little time with my 180-600mm lens and I love it, but the foot on the 180-600 isn't great and I'm not sure if there will be a replacement available. Have a look at my review on the 180-600mm. kzhead.info/sun/aLmymqiEaJ-hjIk/bejne.html

  • Many thanks. I found this video very helpful and ordered the foot you recommended within hours of getting my Z 800 lens. I was also impressed how quickly it was delivered to me over in the UK as I ordered direct from KES in the US and the foot arrived within four days. At the time there was nowhere in the UK with the product in stock and I was advised there would be at least a 4 week wait. I did have to pay the additional overseas delivery costs but consider that a drop in the ocean compared to the cost of buying the Z9 and the Z800 - not to mention also buying the Z 100-400 a few months earlier to which I have also added the KES replacement foot (I did get that in the UK!!!).

    • I continue to be impressed with the Kirk products and I am pleased to hear my video helped another Nikon shooter improve their 800mm lens. I wish Nikon made a lens cap for the 800mm and I found one that someone here in the states is making for the 800mm. I've just ordered one, so check back to see my review of it.

  • Nice video. Good information. While both RRS and Kirk both make quality products, one can easier get a longer Arca rail and solve the balance issues. Just make sure there is enough clearance when mounting a longer rail for the Z9 vertical grip. Keep up the good work.

    • Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. You are correct, a longer Arca Swiss plate will solve the balance issues. Until I received the Kirk Enterprise foot I was using an 80mm Arca Swiss plate that had two 1/4" screws along with a 1/4-3/8" thread adapter. The Kirk foot is certainly a lot more elegant solution, avoids the hassle of moving a mounting plate between lenses and and I won't get caught forgetting to pack an adapter plate - totally the sort of thing I would do if given the opportunity. :)

    • I haven't tried it with the 2x, but I did borrow a Nikon TC-1.4 converter from Nikon and try it with the 800mm. I photographed a great blue heron removing the spikes off of a very large catfish and then eating it from across a small lake with the 800mm and 1.4 teleconverter. Even with the teleconverter I had to crop the image quite a bit. The focus did not seem any slower and the animal recognition worked very well. The image was very slightly softer than I am used to with the 800mm, but I attribute the softness to atmospheric distortion, not the teleconverter.

    • @@Koolbob2 Thanks for the reply. Yes, I just got my copy all together with the TC-1.4X and am really happy about it. I have not notices any difference in speed or resolution with the photos I took form the moon at ISO64 and 1/60 of a second. I could not believe what this lens together with the TC-1.4 does. Out of this world. I have done magnification to 100% and 200% and did not notice any difference. Not soft at all. Yea, my question was with the TC-2X. It doesn't matter any more I just purchased one and I would not know when it arrives. Anyways, thanks for your reply.

  • I noticed you had Peak Design anchors on the lens. How are you carrying your lens and camera? Will you be using the QD on the Kirk foot or carrying it by the included lens strap?

    • Thanks for watching, great question! I was a professional photojournalist for almost 40 years before retiring and I hated camera straps with buckles, clasp, do-dads etc. Every camera I have ever owned from point and shoots to medium format was fitted with a Nikon AN-4b camera strap that stayed on the camera until I sold it. However, in retirement I find that most of my freelance work involves using my Z7II camera on a copy stand or tripod with a geared head. Most of my personal photography is with the Z9 and a long lens on a gimbal. In both situations it's nice to be able to remove the camera strap so it's not in the way. I don't love Peak Design's quick release and I really dislike their straps, but it's the least annoying quick release solution I've found so far. I've fitted all my camera bodies and lenses that have strap lugs with the PD anchors. I have several Nikon AN-4b straps that I use with the PD link on my smaller cameras and I'm using the PD Slide strap on my Z9, Sigma 120-300mm, Nikon 200-400mm and Nikon 800mm. I always carry my cameras on my shoulder, so I don't need the adjustability or complexity of the PD Slide strap, so I plan to replace it with a plain, wide strap with a no slip grip at some point. I use the 800mm foot to carry my lens when I'm carrying it short distances to shoot and only attach the PD Slide strap when I'm going to be carrying it longer distances. Here's a link to the Nikon AN-4b strap www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/product/straps/an-4b-nylon-neck-strap-%28black%29.html

    • @@Koolbob2 Thank you for that detailed info. I agree that the Peak Design system is the easiest to quickly put on/take off straps and I really don’t mind the Peak Design camera straps, i.e. Slide. I use a QD connector with the Peak Design anchors connected to my Kirk replacement foot on all my long Z lenses plus my 500PF with Z9 attached. For the 800 PF would you recommend using the QD attached to the Kirk replacement foot or do you think it would be better to use the two attachment points on the lens (where the included strap is meant to be connected)?

      @whatmeworry2006@whatmeworry2006 Жыл бұрын
    • @@whatmeworry2006 I guess I'm 'old school' because I always attach straps where the manufacturer intended. I've never attached a strap to a tripod socket on a camera body and it never occurred to me to attach a lens strap anywhere other than the strap lugs on the lens. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    • No doubt the lens is amazingly light for its focal length, but I find that I use it most often on a gimbal or monopod with an area swiss head so the Kirk Enterprise foot makes the lens even more enjoyable to use.

      @Koolbob2@Koolbob23 ай бұрын
  • I hate the area Swiss system and it is by no means the industry standard where I'm from. its designed to work at its best hand held. that's why the balance is all wrong on a tripod. the balance is weighted for two hand use as more wildlife shooters want to be mobile and not stuck to a tripod.

    @peterwolf3001@peterwolf3001 Жыл бұрын
    • Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. It's definitely good to have options, the Arca Swiss mounting standard seems to be the most popular mounting system in among professional tripods sold in the U.S. At my old job we had a bunch of Bogen/Manfroto tripods and Bogen/Manfroto heads on our studio camera stands. I really, really hate the Bogen/Manfroto mounts, some heads use a large hexagon mounting plate that interfered with some lenses or camera backs, while others Bogen/Manfroto heads used a small rectangular plate. No other manufacturer uses the Bogen/Manfroto plates for good reasons. You have to tighten up the hexagon mounting plates on the camera with pliers or the camera would rotate on the mounting plate when you shoot verticals. Arca Swiss may not be perfect, but at least the Arca Swiss standard fits across brands. I do walk with my lenses sometimes and I find the Kirk Enterprise foot to be more comfortable than the Nikon foot due to it's longer length. The Nikon and Kirk feet are about even when using the lens with a monopod. The Kirk foot wins hands down when using a gimbal. If you prefer the Nikon foot, then you're good to go, but at least three different manufacturers are now making Arca Swiss feet for those of us who prefer the Arca Swiss system.
