Not something I'm lusting after - but really enjoy seeing everyone else getting excited about it. Also - great intro. :)
Cheers Charles
Love your commentary as always Matt. First time I've seen this lens mounted on anything other than a Z 9, and without the hood. It looks incredible small and compact, what an achievement! I loved the video footage you took on this lens, really stunning and unique.
That intro . . . stellar Matt!
Love your new intro. A great lens which may end up in my bag eventually
i concur re 'explorer' title Matt...i similarly do same. shooting portraits with my 600 fled or landscapes with my 200 f2.. outside normal boxes we shall roam! Id love this lens.... first the Z9! much apprecited review cheers muchly.
I don't specialize in wildlife or sports but always wanted long prime, I currently have 200-500 5.6e, and I was able to buy refurbished 500 5.6pf for 2500usd. I am beyond amazed how light and sharp the 500pf is, I won't be buying the 800 because I have no use for it, but for someone needing this focal length omg!!! go Nikon!!!
Love the intro Matt!
Ah. Another cracking video about smashing equipment that I cannot afford. Lol Awesome job mate.
This intro was Great Matt!!!!
Yes it is! Can’t wait!
Your going to love it Jensen :)
Thanks for the video Matt. Holding off on this one for now even though it looks amazing. There are 3 more long glass options on the roadmap and I'm most excited about the 200-600mm and the recently announced 400mm. I'd like to see all the long lens options before I take the leap towards what will be my largest lens investment. That said, this is a great time to be a Nikon shooter and this lens, at this price is so very tempting. Cheers and feel better soon.
I'm waiting for mine. I've rediscovered birding ever since I got my Z9 in late December. I've teamed it with the 500mm f5.6 PF and 1.4TC as well as with the Z 100-400mm and 1.4 TC but I found that I need a longer focal length. I'm looking forward to it especially it can be used hand held.
I am going to grab one of these 👍🏻
Impressive. Nice to see it on a Z7ii as that is what I'm using. Haven't pushed much further than 560mm with my z100-400 & 1.4TC, but if I feel I need to keep getting out there further then this seems like the perfect addition one day. Great form factor, price, and evidently quality of image. Can't beat that!
Love ur videos dude :) You have come so far since i started following you :)
Cheers Danial :)
Preordered it as soon as it went live.. cant wait to feel that reach
First of all: loved your review as well as the video with Ash (what a cheerful woman that is!). About the lens: I'm already saving up for mine, Matt. The European advisory price will however be € 7.299... which is even more expensive. But still indeed way cheaper than the F mount version. So yes: I'm saving up. I think this prime will pair beautifully with my Z9 and 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4. I even measured up my current camera bag (LowePro Flipside 450 AW II) and this 800mm will fit. Can't wait!
need to see the 200 to 600mm
Paparazzi or perv lens, built to run away. Fantastic lens. Complements the 500pf very well
Great Intro 💯
Nice, thanks! Lighter moon with darker shadows would get my vote.
Mine is on order. 😁
I am truly amazed at how affordable the lens is. The combo of the 800 with the Z9 is awesome package for less that $12K. A lot of money but a lot of capability.
Preordered as soon as it was announced at 1:00am, my local time. I was going to stay up, but I ended up just setting my alarm!! LOL! This is the lens that I have been waiting for ever since Nikon announced the Z mirrorless system back in 2018. Can't wait to have it in a few weeks!
Thank you Matt for your review, I have preordered the 800mm and I'm second in the queue at my local camera shop, can't wait to get it!
Me too . 4th place here
Thanks Todd, that is so awesome, let me know what you think when it arrives. Cheers Matt
@@berniestang2616 So exciting, can't wait to hear what you think. Cheers Matt
I'm tempted to buy one - even though I already have the old heavy 600mm f4 and 200-400mm f4...
Hello Matt, A lens cost less than the D6? and what a lens. I think that Nikon has just been make some of the best kit. The Z9 is just amazing to use. I am still find my feet with it and loving the camera and the Z lenses not just that bust how well my Z7ii and Z9 works with all my older glass. As to adding the 800mm Z lens. It is a big maybe but I will have to save a bit first. Keep well, keep safe and enjoy your 800mm portrait lens?
ordered mine today
This is super exciting, Nikon has another WOW moment here - this lens with all its features, at this price point - amazing! Do we have anything even close to this 800 prime from anyone else, in this price range? Quick math - Z9 + 800 PF = $12k, which is $5k LESS than Canon's new 800 RF... just the lens. And if anyone wants to tell me that extra 1/2 stop on the Canon lens is worth $10.5k extra... that's just bananas. Thanks Matt! 😎👏🏻 EDIT - it’s actually 1/3 of a stop difference, not 1/2
Canon rf 800 is actually a rf400 with a 2,0 tc built in .
Yes yes yes I like it I want it and as soon as I can afford it I will buy it! I can see that mounted on a z-9 or the New Nikon that has the 61 megapixel sensor Z whatever.
Matt what a light practical 800mm. lens that obviously does not disappoint on image quality, so it fits perfectly with Nikon's mirrorless system, and an aperture of 6.3 does not matter when we consider all the benefits! The price is what it is, and it is not expensive in relation to the fact that it is a professional prime telephoto lens ..... Cheers Jess
Yep it is something special, and I look forward to users getting to work with it. And if the small 400mm on the roadmap is also a PF, that too is a very exciting proposition. Cheers Matt
Thank you Matt, much appreciated for your (always) detailed review, now have the dollars for the 500 PF, should I save for the other 4 grand ? .............. Gary ............. AU
pre-ordered just now...
Thanks Matt. Ordered one this morning. Also picked up my Z9 today - YEH, YEH, YEH!!! The first photos I took on it wouldn't load into Capture One so had to switch to the RAW Lossless which did work. Can I ask what file format you use if you are processing in Capture One? Thanks
Congrats. So exciting. Yes RAW lossless for me too Brian 😀 cheers Matt
Must have 🤪🤪🤪🤪
I passed up on a 800mm f/5.6E that was selling at an incredible price mainly because it was 10 pounds. I got a case of chicken broth that was 13 pounds (pretty much the same weight as the lens and camera) and lifted it around for a little and said “nope, I won’t be carrying that around.” The f/6.3 and a camera would be much easier to carry around.
Hi Matt, just wondering what ISO the teaser footage was shot at?
Hi Matt, great video as always! I’m also interested in this lens. By the way, I have recently bought the 80 L Shinn backpack from F-Stop to do more outdoor photography with my Nikon 200-500 mm f/5.6 when I travel. I think that this backpack would be great to carry this 800 mm lens from Nikon. And at the same time, I can bring other things in the backpack. What backpack would you use to carry this 800 mm lens when you do some photography in the nature?
I would certainly think it possible to use the backpack I currently have, I think it would fit not problem, although I did not try it out. :) Next time I will check. Cheers Matt
Hi Matt, should we expect z6 & z7 mark 3 cameras by October 2022, with new expeed 7 processors , any thoughts on it ?
Matt does the lens fit in the bag with a body attached?
I've preordered the 800 for my Z7. Now I'd like to know which cameras have synchro VR to get the most out of the 800 PF. I'm thinking my Z7 may predate that feature. I enjoy all your videos. Thank you.
Cheers Marvel, to the best of my understanding the first camera to have this feature is the Z 9. I don't know if any of the older cameras may get this with FW, but I think it is unlikely :). Cheers Matt
I preordered it too, not sure it was a good idea. Anyways no money transferred yet, so if buyer's remorse hits hard... More importantly: please get well soon!
How well does this lens work with the Z6ii and the Z7ii, is the AF fast enough?
Pretty sure I'll sell my 500 f/4 and grab the 800 f/6.3, then in time add the 100-400 in place of the 200-500. Adding the 1.4 tele will be a beast of a system. Thanks, Matt!! Oh... prefer the lighter moon :)
Yes, a 800, 100-400 and 1.4 would be as perfect wildlife combo as I could image.
Don't need it, can't afford it, but boy, do I want it!
Could use it at this weekends GP instead of the 200-500
pre-ordered day 1
Love the Lens!, not too crazy about the price, but I'm more than certain I will come up with an excuse as to why I Need and Want this Lens, Recently purchased the Z 100-400 and figured that it would be the last Lens I would ever need for my Z9 and Z7-II Cameras, at $6500 Dollars, this will most likely be the last Lens Purchase (Hopefully) :)
Yes and yes. The biggest thing holding me back is the cost.
Well at £6.5k is a bit out of the question for me but if I could afford I have to say yes, I think would invest in one of these. This and the Z9 only serve to confirm to me I made the right choice investing in the Z system
Matt Granger has just posted results with the Z 400mm 2.8 he added the 2.0 T.C. for 800mm said the results were great gave 9.25 out of 10 ? ( hoping to receive this lens soon) it's 3 lenses in one. Do I need the 800mm ? as you have both Matt could you please test it for me.
04:58 So this pic was shot with 1600mm F/12.6 Focal length? Please correct me if I am wrong.
I still have to recover my bank account from the Z9 expense and sell my 500mm f4 VR, but will get one of these sooner or later
I'm stuck in my rut loving zooms - so I'll wait for the 200-600. I've actually never used a long prime. As a "generalist" or "hobby" shooter I don't have a particular genre. I do wildlife, street, travel, interiors etc and with the sheer quality of the images with the z zooms, I see no reason to get a prime, but I get GAS!!!
I hear your pain Patrick, I am probably more a 100-400 person myself, but this lens is just something special. Cheers Matt
@@MattIrwinPhotography and I’d love to get one even if I can’t justify it 😂😂
I loved zooms…until I had my nose rubbed in the difference between budget zoom and prime with the 200-500 (now sold) . Qualifier - perfectly happy with the S-line 70-200 with the 2x.Remember the 200-600 will not be an S-line - more budget range quality, I fear.
If you own the Z 400mm + 2xTC would it compete with the 800mm?
I wish this lens was available couple months ago. I'd have taken it with me to Antarctica.
Is the minimum focussing distance of 5 m a problem with small birds?
Thought it was going to be twice that price. At $6500 its definitely a lens I'm looks to get .
Hi Matt, as hobbyist photographer I can't really afford Nikon latest gear (Z9, 400mm 2.8 and now the 800mm). Nikon has definitely target the professional market. As a long time Nikon user, I feel left out. Maybe it time to look at other brands.
Not an everyday lens for me, but if I was going on a safari, to Antarctica, back to Galapagos, etc on a special trip, I would think very seriously about purchasing and then selling after the trip, or possibly renting. Bottom-line it is not an everyday lens for my kit, but special event - oh yes.
I’m using a D500. Will wait to upgrade once I see if a Z8 is going to be realistic. Is this worth buying to use with D500? I’m using 500pf right now.
You can’t use this with a D500. The 500mm PF is f lens, but 800mm PF is Z mount
The 600PF will be as much as I want. Actually, the 200-600 non-S is what I’m waiting for.
Looks amazing... *sees price* Yeah I'll stick with my Sigma 150-600...this thing costs more than my car, lol.
Hmmm... This really makes me wonder. I have a deal on a Sigma F-mount 800mm f/5.6 for about $5,450 which I have been saving for, but now this is coming to the picture at 20% more which is not to be underestimated but also would not make that much of a difference when you're in this price point anyway. The only benefit I see to the Sigma lens over this is the ability to use it adapted to my Z and 1 bodies while it works natively on my F-mount bodies. This is in contrast with this lens which would only work on my Z bodies, but I'm sure has much better sharpness and image quality... Hmmm...
Interesting problem, which camera system of the 3 do you think you will use most moving forwards ? Cheers Matt
It's a bit too expensive for me, but hopefully there is a 300 PF Z lens in the future!
There is deffo a 400mm pf on the lens roadmap. Either an f4 or f4.5 according to current speculation 👍
Already preorderd but 12 month waiting its along time waiting
Ciao.. Maybe I'm missing something. Isn't 6.5k USD = 8700 AUD? Or do you mean that in Australia we will pay 10.5k no matter if in USA is cheaper?
I just want a Z mount 300 2.8 or 2.0 (hey, that flange is huge).
Same. Was thinking a 200mm f2.0 with built-in 1.4tc would be a dream lens lol
They need to make a F-mount version
cool intro though
Cheers
The main reason I moved to mirrorless Camera is the size of weight. the Z9 not for me it's huge and heavy the Z 800 and | 400 + Z 70-200 are too heavy. I hope Nikon will make the Z9 (or similar) in Z 6/7 size. maybe Z 100-400 + TC 2X will give the lighter solution any other Idea will be bkessed.
What if I couple it with z6ii? What is the autofocus like?
I’ll have to try that next time I use it 😀
@@MattIrwinPhotography please let us know Not everyone can afford both of these beasts👍👍
400 2.8 and converters I'd go for. You can make a 400 longer, you can't make an 800 shorter...
I said YES! But the bank said NO!!! 😊
Damn !!!
I saw it in my camera bag a minute ago, but now it’s gone!
Damn, where did it go????
Price is cheaper than I thought it would be.
It's a bargain, relatively speaking. I like little birds but I won't be ordering any time soon.
This price is ridiculous, I was expecting £15K!
You know you have made it on KZhead when the scammers start trolling your comments. Sad but true.
I'd prefer an f8 version that is 4 pounds but this is good too
That lens is a game changer! 😍
Stop it Nikon! Stop it!! I have finally convinced my "better two thirds" (as opposed to my "better half") that I need/deserve a Z9. Now this! If only it was a reasonable fee to rent one of these for a day - but you have to virtually sell one of your kidneys. Oh .... and thanks for the video Matt. Cheers.
Hay Matt, don't be bragging about how big and long it is mate.
At 3.7kg with a Z9 body, this is not a light weight handheld camera.
The minimum focus distance is just too far. That’s a big downside for small birds that might end up perching closer.
That poor poor lensmount in the intro.
The 800mm is not for me. If I was wealthy and money was of no concern, sure I'd buy it. What I'm waiting for is the 200-600mm. That lens is for me.
Nikon has a nerve to introduce a wonderful lens when they cannot ship the Z 100-400, Z 24-120 or the Z9. I would guess that this lens won't be available until 2024!!!!!!!!
I’m sorry to hear that you have still not received your Z9, Z100-400, and Z24-120. Where are you located? I live in Austin, Texas and my local camera shop has had a steady stream of stock coming in. I received my Z9 in February from B&H, and when I ordered the Z100-400 in early March from my local shop, it only took about a week to come in. I preordered the Z800 a week ago at the same shop and I was told today that I should receive it by the end of May. You might want to look at a smaller shop. If you live in the USA, message me and I will get you in contact with my contact to see if he can help you out.
@@Interbeing_CDN I live in CT and have spoken to my local camera store as well as B&H Photo out of New York City, both indicate that everything is back ordered.
@@kennethmull6961 I feel your frustration, but Nikon is shipping a surprising number of units out considering the chip shortages and logistics issues. I hope you see your new kit soon.
US $6500 is $8500 Aussie Dollars. The Yank dollar is tanking again.
Hey Paul, US prices are without taxes, AUD prices are with takes, so that brings it to about $9350, and we are a smaller market, so the cost of running business here would be a little higher, and leaving some space for fluctuations in the dollar ... and then it will get pretty close. :)
I have seen the video of this lens but the f6.3 aperture is a deal breaker for me. I shoot a lot under low light & under various types of old and new floodlights and I'm not a fan of high iso use when I can avoid it. f6.3 is more in the budget 3rd party lens type than a OEM producer.
It’s 1/3 of a stop less than the biggest aperture you can get from any manufacturer at this FL ! Not much of a difference at all
1/3 stop is a deal-breaker? It's the difference between ISO 800 and ISO 1000.
@@wascwywbt4108 where i live the arena's I visit some grounds the floodlighting is over 60 years old and other places have more modern floodlighting . If you had used in the past like a 150-600 f6.3 sigma lens under these old lights the focusing is slow and dim viewfinder it does not work.
@@NikCan66 800mm for arena is probably not the best tool for sure, but you can’t compare focusing speed just with aperture number.
Carrying it by the camera? And with no lens hood? Cringe!!
Given that it is around the same size as my 400mm and that I dont have to spend the money on the new 400mm I am giving some serious consideration to putting in an order for this lens!! The ability to fit this into my current gear case makes it way more of an option compared to the F mount 5.6.
