"Roots" A wire tree sculpture mounted in willow wood and cast in resin. Turned on the lathe. O.U.R.

This was a fun project that involved turning a willow log into a large egg shape and then carving windows within that. A wire tree sculpture was then made and mounted into the vase. There is a light mounted through the bottom that can be removed if the lamp effect is not desired. Enjoy!

  • I have watched a few of your videos and was impressed enough to become a subscriber. Your creativity is most appreciated but to then have the knowledge and persistence to bring your design to an actual piece of art elevates you to a higher level. Then when I heard that you were a physician added more respect. I am a retired dentist who remodeled income units on the days I wasn’t seeing patients. It was a great escape from the demands of fine detail with no room for error. I also made and cast rings and pendants from scrap gold. I got a laugh from your comments of the “Laguna” accessories because my practice was in Laguna Beach, CA Stay Healthy

  • The wood moved, so it's not true anymore. I would return to using the gouge to true the whole project and then resand it to a high polished finish. But a very pleasing looking item

  • This is such a cool project and the results are amazing. When you were talking about oxidation my brain lit up with the possibilities of allowing (more like encouraging) the part of the wire that will become the coiled leafy part of the tree to oxidize. I bet there's some chemical or method that would allow a controlled oxidation of the copper. Could be fun for a future tree.

    • There is a chemical for that. I used it many times as a stained glass artisan. You can get green, black ect.. patina from any stained glass retailer, Amazon has it as well. Edit: I have no idea how or if the chemicals in the patina would react in resin.

  • Wow! You save life's at work, you make amazing art to save life's as well. You sir must make your family proud. How do you price your art? I'm starting to get into it (thanks to you) as a creative outlet but also to hopefully make extra income so I don't have to be away from my family for weeks at a time (truck driver). I never know how to place value on something I made. My instinct is to low ball it.

    • Thanks Justin! Much appreciated. I'm probably a bad example of pricing. I started out at 20 for a simple bowl and slowly increased over the last 2 years as my youtube channel has grown. I'm up to 500 now but they are far more complex and because I'm selling them for charity, people are more likely to pay that kind of money....

      @artgivinghope@artgivinghope2 жыл бұрын
    • @@artgivinghope that makes sense. You have an amazing gift that's for sure. I feel like even without the charity your prices seem right. Even though I have issues pricing things I do, I am usually pretty accurate pricing others. And if I saw this piece at a store I would think it was around $700. The craftsmanship is top notch and it being an original piece. I hope you continue to grow your brand and the prices shoot through the roof. And when people see one of your pieces they say "OMG! Is that a Dan Preece? " Thank you for your videos. Have a good day sir.

  • I absolutely love that tree! Would this be a situation where you might consider doing a darker stain on the inside for the tree to pop a little more? Or would that just not look right through the resin?

  • Love the tree wire design!!! Realized I did see one other vid in the past based on this wire work, a big tree of some sort. Now having seen your most recent content, leaps and bounds from the earlier videos I saw last night, but one question I have is have you ever looked into using wood shavings for finishing? I don't know the negatives (haven't checked), but I've seen other wood workers use a handful of shavings to apply a perfect and PERMANENT final shine and finish. One other question is about the possible use of a buffing/polishing wheel or handheld machine. Thoughts on getting or using one or something similar? Blacktail studios even uses a handheld car buffing tool. I know that wouldn't apply as much given the design of your pieces, but it's not unheard of to utilize similar tools. Just a thought.

  • I am going to tell on myself here...You were using that sanding ball on the hour glass to hollow it out and you stopped for a second. When you stopped, I seen all the saw dust and I was so focused on it that I ended up trying to blow the sawdust out of the way 🤦‍♂️😳

  • Dan, how are those cracks to be kept in check? Did I miss if you covered that?

    @billko9201@billko92012 жыл бұрын
    • Good question. This wood was very dry and any cracking should have be finished. Now that the whole thing had been soaked in the resin and permeated the majority of the bigger cracks, it should be very stable and prevent further cracking. The resin bonds to dry wood like super glue...
