"Phoenix Flyby" is a clear resin wood and vase accented with Macaw feathers. The project that almost wasn't... :)
I basically spend my free time dreaming up ways to express my artistic side and simultanously to raise money for Operation Underground Railroad. O.U.R. funds, supports, trains and guides rescue missions for children who are in sex trafficking slavery and free them to better lives with their amazing after care program. We cannot support O.U.R. enough. (OURRESCUE.ORG)

  • Thanks, Dan, for your willingness to share your triumphs as well as your failures. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one wondering how the heck I botched something up when I had such high hopes for a project and ended up taking a few laps around the shop to try and calm down. I love your creativity and never-say-die attitude towards each of your projects, turning out some pretty cool and very beautiful stuff after what seemed like an irrecoverable disaster. Because of your 'challenges', I'm learning something that I can use on each of my projects; thanks for your dedication to OUR, an organization that is making a difference.

  • I watch a guy who makes huge tables with resin and wood. He treats his wood with resin that's thinned down with acetone so it soaks deeply into the wood and I would imagine that it's way easier to apply. It probably seems like I do nothing but watch YT videos, but I have a business that does laser cutting and 3D printing so when the laser and printers are running, I have spare time. ;-) I also sound like a know-it-all since I learn tricks from other people and pass them on if I think they might be useful. Sorry if that's annoying. I love the cause you're supporting and the level of expertise that you've developed. So I'm more likely to share something here.

  • I got so mad at one of my 3d printers that had been messing up endlessly and nothing I did would make it work right. So I took it apart down to the very last screw...unhooked every connection on the motherboard. I mean, there wasn't another bit that could be taken apart. Take THAT, 3D printer! I showed you!

  • This is not only a beautiful piece, (like all are) and even more so is the reason for this YT site. I’m new to this channel and I had woke up one morning and this video/channel was on my tablet. I do listen to certain things at night before I go to bed, but I normally cut my tab off before I fall asleep. In saying that, I really have no idea how this site was the last thing viewed. I’m also fairly new also to wood turning with only a couple of yrs under my belt. I did have some school in this field and remembered quite a bit of what I had learned in the past. I’ve been watching a bunch of videos on this wonderful, and all but forgotten trade, as many hands on trades are these days. I don’t have any experience in using resins and I have to say out of all the turning vids using resin, this by far is the ABSOLUTELY BEST ! I haven’t seen anyone use it like you do nor the end result of a project. I’m really picky on learning from different people and their ways of turning. I just became a SUB to this channel and can’t wait to see your projects and even more to learn more about turning from this site. However, in saying all this, the best part of this site in the true purpose of your work. I have a soft heart when it comes to children and I’m overwhelmed with the time and work that you put into every piece and that ALL of it just for child trafficking. I even start getting upset just talking about it. Things that evolve abused children are overlooked so much but this one is really SICKENING in a completely different category all it’s on. THIS PROBLEM SHOULD NEVER EVER BE OVERLOOKED. Speaking for myself, this matter really hits home when you have children/grandchildren of your own. I to some degree can relate to this but I can’t even imagine what the families that have suffered from this feel day after day. My wife and I lost our first child due to being a premie and organs not developed enough. At the time my wife had a Thyroid problem and it was the reason for being so premature. It’s been almost 30 years and we both have never gotten over it and will never get of it. 48 days during the 1993 blizzard in North Carolina is all we were able to have with him. This was a life changing moment in not only from losing a child but we were also young in age and our marriage. I truly believe the closeness we still have today, and having to try and understand why/what we went through has kept us together for right at 30 yrs. Therefore it was only one way this channel was brought to me……GOD. It’s only because of GOD has all this developed. I’m completely on board with OPERATION UNDERGROUND and I will do all I can on my end and anything this channel/cause needs. God bless to all the people that have made this happen.

  • You know what? If I wasn't following the story, I would not have known this was not planned. I sincerely really do love it. The wood is beautiful, and the feathers are more subtle Than how it started out which is so lovely. I do have to admit I was giggling through most of this project, and a few time I outright laughed! Im not sure if it was with you or at you!!!!! Lmao! JK. Honestly, I think it is fantastic. xo OH, And I really like the wide crack at the bottom with the clear resin. Just saying.....

  • Dan - the end result is very nice. The wood and the feathers have a unique look and texture to them. Good combination. As a thought for another project where you are trying to "embed" something in the resin ... you might try using some fast-setting resin (perhaps even UV resin) and use a paintbrush to build up the resin in the cutout until it is about an inch thick. Then glue the feathers (or whatever) to that resin. Then, either pour or use the brush to fill the resin into the cutout. This would allow you to turn the inside and the outside without ever hitting the feathers (or whatever) with the tools. It would also mean you would not have to spend as much time getting the cutout quite as smooth and sanded. The extra time it would take to build up the inside resin layer would not really take any longer than it did to do all the sanding of the cutout and the difficulty in getting the project out of the pressure pot
