Woodturning - The Holly Surprise.... IT WON'T Disappoint!
I started this piece a few months ago and wasn't sure what to do with the crack, so had it sat on the side waiting for me to think of an idea. That's what I love about Woodturning, no two pieces are the same, and every piece of wood has its flaws. I knew I wanted to preserve the crack in some way so thought the best way was to lace it in leather strips.
How do you think I did?
The piece has been sanded to 1200 grit and finished with red dye and wood wax.

Disclaimer:
My videos are for entertainment purposes only. Some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest, so when using any tool or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines first.
And Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practice. The gloves I wear are tight-fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT copy my actions if you feel unsafe doing so.
Oh, my, gosh! This is so clever, Harry. I love the lacing!
What a fun surprise. I was delighted by the color & lacing the crack!
Perfect way to take care of a crack. Include it in the design and highlight it.
Nice project Harry and I love the lacing up of the crack 🪡🧵
A beautiful vase harry the color that you used is stunning on that holly
I love the lace idea on the crack. Nice color.
Very interesting idea to lace up the crack!
Very nice. Another fine video. A great design, the use of the leather is great.
Great job Harry!
LOL I was wondering how you were going to handle the split, very creative
neat way to take care of a crack -- I like it -- the is also very nice
Cool idea with the leather lace. Nice work Harry.
That's awesome. Great job. What is the red colouring?
Great idea. How did you finish the lacing?
Hi Harry the vase you made was brilliant and such a novel idea with the lace up effect.can I ask you was you nervous at all about the carbide cutter catching the split and then maybe blowing the edge right off .i know I would have been if I was doing it . Anyway thanks for sharing it with us …….Doug
WOW
BOM DIA ESSAS FERRAMENTAS QUE ESTA USANDO , NOVAS SÃO DE EXELENTE QUALIDADE E MUITO BOAS, FAZ UM OTIMO SERVIÇO E FACILITA MUUUUUUITO
Just a tip on the leather. Cut it to a taper and then superglue it to a hard point.
"Oh my, my great grand mothers vase has cracked. Do you think we could sew it back together." That's what it looks like.
Next time consider starting at the bottom. Easier to tie a knot, then start lacing either single strand or double strand (like a shoe). Tying off at the bottom or even glueing down the end is more difficult than doing it at the top. Nice choice of color on that Holly.
Might not hold water but I like it.
I'm so confused, a vase with a big gap in it. I guess you can put dry flowers in it. 🤔
Love the color. Not too thrilled about the style of the crack finish. Sorry.
Very disappointing 😞
Sorry, I WAS disappointed.
Absolutely cracking outcome 👍
