Woodturning - Making the Most out of this $300 Oak Blank!

I've had this large oak burly blank in the workshop waiting for my Bowlsaver Max 4 to arrive, it is the perfect way to save a smaller part of your blank to be used in a later project, especially when the grain of the wood looks this good! Have you got any ideas for the smaller piece I removed? The figure is excellent!
The natural cracks in the bowl were filled with Black Milliput and sanded to 1000 grit before Danish oil and wood wax were applied.

My videos are for entertainment purposes only. Some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest, so when using any tool or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines first.
And Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practice. The gloves I wear are tight-fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT copy my actions if you feel unsafe doing so.

  • Yeehaw . . . .finally a video showing milliput. I use it all the time for voids or decoration . . . .very interesting stuff. Great piece of wood!!! The turqoise with a buck-eye burl . . . . oh baby!!!

  • It's really nice to see a beautiful piece of wood not get hollowed-out. Of course, with such a particularly lovely, and expensive, burl blank; I can certainly understand its highlighted use. And, the finished bowl is stunning. :)

  • Love that you took a core out of it so as not to waste great looking wood that doesn't just go on the floor!!!! I sure wished all turners used these Harry. Very glad to see you get one and using it!!!!! That is amazingly beautiful and an excellent job turning it and have another bowl for later!!! I enjoyed your video so I gave it a Thumbs Up

    • Big burl figured like that, seasoned and preserved. I can definitely see that price tag. With Harry turning it, and for what the wood is, no problem getting a good ROI.

  • If people are willing to spend that kind of money on wood blanks I better start cutting up my stock to sell before I put any time into it. I guess a fool is born every day.

  • The centre piece that was saved was hardly worth the effort, let alone buying the bowl saver

  • Ruined by using milliput. What was a beautiful piece of wood with natural detail, has been filled in by using that junk. Transition from sides to bottom of the bowl also look like not enough material was taken out. Sorry - my 2cents don't add up to much.
