Woodturning - This Wood Was Like a Sponge!

This piece of wood came from a large Holm oak crotch cut around 10 years ago. My Tree surgeon mate found it when he was doing some work taking out a large pine at a local school. Every now and again I head to his yard to scavenge some bits and pieces and the crotch really caught my eye. It was definitely punky in places although I think it somewhat adds to the beauty. I have got a load more chunks that I'll be using in future projects, luckily they have fewer spongey bins 😂
I used some epoxy resin to harden the spongiest bits, and it worked okay. The piece was sanded to 1000 grit and finished with Danish oil and wood wax.
What do you think of the grain?

Disclaimer:
My videos are for entertainment purposes only. Some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest, so when using any tool or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines first.
And Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practice. The gloves I wear are tight-fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT copy my actions if you feel unsafe doing so.

  • Harry this is an amazing piece of wood to be able to turn. I’m jelly. lol The grain in its own skin is enough but your skill on the lathe brought it all to fruition. Loving your videography skills that simply compliment the whole exercise. Can’t wait for your next installment, cheers mate!

  • That is a beautiful piece of wood, and I'm glad you kept your design 'simple'. It's a lovely vase, and its simplicity only helps highlight the marvelous grain of the wood. Nicely done. :)
