There's A Feather In My (Walnut) Crotch! 👀 - Wood Turning
A crotch piece can often offer wonderful grain patterns and this Walnut piece is no exception. Just beautiful! I also offer answers to questions about how to find center and mount an odd shaped piece and why I start with an odd shaped piece. Finished in shellac.

Phil, I am going to speak for the rest of your fans It's been over 24 hours since most of us viewed your last video and you haven't responded to comments. I know you had health issues in the past. I hope your okay.
Wow, I appreciate that you notice this, Russ, thank you! You are right. It's a busy time, working on my deck but still turning during breaks. I don't want to miss a week if I can help it. I don't like getting behind in the comments like this but it can't be helped. I have checked in each day just to see how this video is doing. I'll get caught up, soon, I hope. And, I'm doing fine! 😊
Geeze you know Phil probably has a life too
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop great news Phil, I wish I was there to help you! It would be my pleasure. I may not be able to turn a bowl, but can build a hell of a deck and home repairs!
Glad you enjoyed turning this little crotch of black walnut. Back when you first started the channel, you were choosing between a “good piece of walnut” and a not as nice piece of wood. You chose the other piece to work on that day. Given that I had too much turning wood, that video is what inspired me to gift you some wood at that time, and give you more choices to pick from. The rest is history! Glad I could help support the channel over these past years. It is always rewarding to watch you create one of a kind turning on your lathe.
Thank you so much for sharing this piece with Phil!
I also say thank you for sending this to Phil.
As Dave and Bill said, Thanks Valerie
Valerie, you, too, are a star for supplying Phil with wood; thank you.
I got started sending Phil wood back when he was beginning because in one video, he was complaining about only having birch for turning local hardwood. Figured it was a good way to repay for all the teaching he does for us. (also a good way to get some of my excess out of the way)
To turn that bowl round would be to strip away all of its character, your way is absolutely the way forward. Thank you for enriching all of our lives with your wonderful presence and talent 🙏☺️
Thank you very kindly, Derek! 😊
Another fantastic finish (pun intended) to another bowl that displays the beauty of nature in something most people would just toss into the fireplace. Thank you!
Thank you, Robert! 😊
Just keep turning firewood into treasures Phil. 😀
I'm on it, David! 😊
Thank You Phil, Thank You Valerie, Thank You Friend Of Valerie in Pasco in Washington ... Well Phil I can never say it enough "You can make the most out of the very least". That is a small piece of Black Walnut and along with your instructional shop procedures makes for a wonderful show today. Nice THICK beautiful bark, dark Black Walnut and a very nice little bowl that seemed fun for you to turn and fun for us to watch. Until next time Phil.... TM
You are most welcome, Tuffy! And glad Phil enjoyed turning it.
Definitely fun to turn, Tuffy! I enjoy the challenge of the big pieces but once in awhile, these little ones are just the ticket! 😊
Tuffy Phil mentions your name on his videos. I echo your comments, I feel very privileged to be a witness one of the best turners I know. I hope you will also KEEP ON TURNING
Another beautiful piece of art! I love turning walnut. It has so many colors in it. The bottom of the bowl looks like a man screaming 😱. Thanks for sharing your videos. Mr Phil, you have become an inspiration to me.
Cool, I gotta go look at the bottom, now! 😊
Hola Phil, Sometimes the little ones are the best. Start with almost nothing and by turning away half of it you create a beautiful something. Keep the aspidistra flying! God bless, Paul
Agree, Paul and fun to turn, too! 😊
There is nothing to hate about that bowl. Stunning.
😊
Morning Phil, Another PAM (Phil Anderson Masterpiece). Black Walnut just keeps giving woodturners wonderful wood to work with and this piece is no exception. Beautiful Phil. You were right one cup did it for this morning. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw
Yup, short and sweet just for you so you can get on with your day, Huw! Thanks for stopping by! 😊
I love black walnut! Your design and finish are perfect! Thank you, Phil!
Thanks, Peter! 😊
Black Walnut is so pretty. I love the odd shaped bowls you make…so unique!
Cool, thanks! 😊
Oh how you teach us Phil. Every video teaches me a little more and just love your teaching approach. Love it!!!!!!
Thank you, Kid! 😊
You made that look effortless, but that's just because you can. Love the uniqueness of the pieces you turn. And this one is no exception. Can't beat Black Walnut and that goes double for a crotch piece. Thanks for sharing.
Yup, special wood, Bob! 😊
Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder. Walnut is always a winner. ❤️
😊
I really like that piece. You always turn something out of nothing. Your work is amazing.
Thank you! 😊
Another visit with a warm, fellow woodturner. Thank you for sharing. You make me wish that we were neighbors.
That would be cool, Gary! 😊
As always another beautiful piece! If only we all had such lovely parts of tree sent to us to turn! Maybe one day....😊
I have plenty more of the small black walnut crotches like the one I sent Phil. I will send you some if you pay the postal shipping flat rate.
@@valeriehenschel1590 thank you that's very kind but lord knows how much that would be to the uk!?! 😁
That would be cool! 😊
I like not always round. You seen a feather & I seen a heart😁Walnut is just a beautiful wood.
Oh, cool, I'll look for the heart! Thanks, Lynda! 😊
You were right on with the center placement. Beautiful piece! Thanks Phil 😊
Thanks for noticing, Karen! 😊
Love it! Please don't produce 'round', we can all do 'round', we love how you create beauty with Nature; that is masterful. Thank you.
Thank you so much, David! 😊
Infinitely more interesting than a round bowl.
We agree, thanks! 😊
Thank you Phil for another beautiful turning.
😊
Great piece, ideal change bowl. Walnut rarely disappoints.
😊
I love your imagination, you take something that many of us would put in the burn pile and make something beautiful out of it. I look forward to your next video.
Thank you, Jim! 😊
Exactly. My thanks. Your donated wood chunks for all to enjoy, as Phil says. So beautiful.
😊
Hi Phil this little black walnut crotch is beautiful the grain is lovely and I love the bark. I really like the mini love edge bowl it magnificent and unique. Well done Phil . The video was great. Amanda xx
Thank you, Amanda, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! 😊
Hi Phil, This bowl has to be a top 10, beautiful bowl, love the shape and the bark, well done sir !!
Thank you! 😊
This is a beautiful bowl from black walnut thanks for sharing your work with us.
😊
I just love how velvety smooth all your pieces are. You have much more patience for sanding than I do! Always enjoy watching you "caress" your finished pieces wirh such appreciation!
Thank you, Leigh! 😊
Very nice. Black Walnut does not disappoint.👍
😊
Absolutely spectacular, Phil! Goodness gracious!😊
😊
Beautiful looking live edge bowl. Always love crotch pieces , amazing grain patterns. Very well done Phil 👍.
Thank you, Scott! 😊
What a gorgeous bowl, you are gifted with a good eye Phil, and thank you to the lady who sent you this lovely piece of wood. From sunny Lancashire. UK
Thank you! 😊
Okay! Now you've done it! You took a waste chunk and made a gorgeous live edge bowl out of it! So now that's forcing me to head out to the cut-off pile and search for that odd maple crotch waste chunk that I remember tossing to the side 'cuz it was just too odd, too thin and the large slab's grain was simply too exciting. I'll find it... sometime. Oh! I've got a couple shirts just like that. I made this song up because of it: "I've got shavings in my pockets, "I've got sawdust in my shoes. "The wood just keeps on spinnin', "But I've got woodturner's blues." Gorgeous bowl, excellent save! Thank you for the tricks and methods.
Nice song. Bill
Haha, nice lyrics but don't quite your day job, Dave! 😊
Thank you and Valerie! Another masterpiece
Thanks, Luie! 😊
🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil another lovely bowl you turned on the lathe. It's brilliant how a three sided piece can turn out to become a bowl. Fantastic grain and really nice and smooth finish.
Thank you, John! 😊
The Picasso of woodturning!
Haha, thanks, Blair! 😊
What a beautiful piece Phil. My whole turning experience has been influenced by you. I have even purchased my lathe which is the same as yours. I approach my pieces very similar to you. I love your approach and the fact that it’s more fun to turn something that’s been given to you just as it is. I get most my wood from a local firewood supplier. He loves that I turn them into art verses burning them. He allows me to look thru his piles and never charges me. Great guy. So you are truly the inspiration to what I do. Thank you so very much for sharing this passion .
What a beautiful comment, thank you so much, David! 😊
Always love walnut. Beautifully done, Phil. Enjoyed your instruction.
😊
Phil that is an absolute amazing bowl! It looks like a black walnut heart with a feather 😊
Cool, thanks, MaryBeth! 😊
Love the shape, the bark, the feather, the figure and just watching your videos. All the best to you Phil. Regards Jim
Cool, thank you so much, Jim! 😊
A very cool looking piece Phil. I love the grain pattern inside. Nothing quite like a crotch piece. Some of the nicest looking bark I have seen on Black Walnut but your treatment of the bark is the best. Another fun video to watch my friend, Gary
Thanks a lot, Gary! Hard to go wrong with Walnut and then add in a crotch piece and I'd really have to try to make it look bad. These little pieces can be a nice break from the massive, problematic pieces. Just right for your shoulder, I bet! 😊
Phil I have to admit I am getting spoiled on these small turnings. Shoulder is pretty happy with me doing it.
Phil, this is a beautiful piece! Black Walnut is a lovely wood to turn and your finish is flawless. Thanks so much for sharing this one. 👍🏾
Agreed, Greg, Walnut of any kind is lovely to turn. I'm glad you like this one, thank you so much! 😊
The shape is pretty! Natural! Thanks for sharing! You can never go wrong with Carhartt!!
There ya go, Kelly! 😊
A beautiful piece of wood and work. I know you always see something in your work, to me It looks like an arrowhead from the above view. Thank you for taking the time to explain the things you do when you’re doing them.
You are welcome, thanks for commenting, Barry! 😊
Beautiful figure in the grain, interesting shape and a perfect finish…and that bark is the icing on the cake! Love the live-edge pieces! Thank you to Valerie, and thanks to you, Phil for sharing this lovely little bowl with all of us.
Thank you very much, Marcia! 😊
Beautiful natural edge, black walnut bowl Phil & great instruction on how to find centre 😊
Cool, thank you, Karen! 😊
Consistently some of the very best content on youtube!
So kind of you, thank you! 😊
Phil, good tip on the shavings in the pocket. My wife is getting really tired of cleaning shavings out of the dryer vent. Gotta love the Black Walnut. As always you've turned what usually goes into a fire and created a work of art. Impatiently waiting for next Thursday.
Cool, thank you, Jimmie! 😊
It’s like velvet, so smooth and the walnut wood it amazing
😊
Simple is definitely better sometimes! Looks great with the feathering.
😊
Another beautiful piece of art!!! Keep up the great work Phil. Have a blessed weekend. 🙂
Thank you, Mary, it was a busy weekend! 😊
Cute bowl with lots of color and very nice grain, and something truly unique, well done and thanks! Cheers Al
Thanks, Al! 😊
Absolutely beautiful. Love the shape and how the bowl fits the shape of the piece. Also, the grain is very lovely.
Thank you, Bill! 😊
As someone who collects feathers, I find this bowl exceptionally beautiful…another wonderful piece…love it…👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Cool, thank you, Loraine! 😊
My initial thought was "boy i bet that tickles" 😂 then i watched your video and i love the shape of this bowl, and the feather design in the bottom. Another lovely piece Phil 😊
Haha! Thank you, Denise! 😊
Gorgeous!! I like that a lot, Phil. Beautiful figure in that bowl, buddy! Excellent demo! 👏👏👏 Take care, …..Gord
Thank you very much, Gord! Yup, hard to beat Walnut! 😊
I love this project!! You did a fantastic job creating a special, one-of-a-kind bowl! Thanks Phil❤
Thank you, Texana! 😊
Beautiful! During the holidays with pine cones stacked inside! You give good ideas for those odd pieces. Thank you!
😊
I look forward to Thursdays because they are "Phil Anderson Video" days. That is another really beautiful piece Phil. The figure in that walnut is really something. The pieces you turn are always so interesting. I did a bit of a double take early on, "Waitaminute! Phil just did a recess and not a tenon." 😁
Haha, I've done a few recesses lately, Mark. 😊 Not sure why but I guess a lot of smaller pieces. I tend to use a recess on them more often.
Always a pleasure seeing you turn out a beautiful piece from nothing. Funny story about the pocket full of shavings
Thanks, Michael! 😊
I can’t hardly wait for Thursday to get here,So I can see what new project is on the lathe. you never seem to disappoint. It’s an absolute pleasure 😊watching you work, you take ordinary wood, and make art.
I appreciate that, George, thank you! 😊
And you found the perfect center! Such a balanced piece!
😊
The bowl is beautiful in its simplicity!
Thank you! 😊
Love the odd shaped pieces, it looks great.
Thanks, Doc! 😊
Absolutely beautiful live edge crochet piece Phil. I love it.
😊
Another Phil Anderson Masterpiece. Thanks to Valerie for sending it to you and Thanks to you for making such a lovely piece before our eyes. Long may you reign!!
Thank you too, Cliff for your comment! 😊
That's such a pretty little bowl. Lovely grain and colours. The feather is cute.
Thank you, Karen! 😊
"There's A Feather In My..." Sounds like a ticklish situation to me, Phil 😁
LOL! I added the ( Walnut) after I already had uploaded the video, Jim. It just didn't sound right! 😊
Another fine work of art. Beautiful grain and color.
Many thanks! 😊
I like it, the walnut grain and the shape too. It sure would look great filled with M&Ms next to my sewing machine.
Perfect for that, Betsy! 😊
Oh goodness Phil we now need a Crotch shelf. lol Everything nice about this piece bark colour shape, good job Phil. 😁
Thanks, Lewis! 😊
I thoroughly enjoyed this as well as all your turnings! You have inspired me as a relatively new turner. I look forward to your videos.
Good to know, Martin, thank you! 😊
Another stunning piece, Phil! Crotchwood always has some amazing figure.
True enough, Billy, thanks! 😊
Beautiful live edge walnut crotch bowl, Phil. Outstanding feathering grain! Thank you once again for sharing your skill and artistry with your loyal followers 👌😀👍, Steve
Thank you, Steve! 😊
Wow! Beautiful bowl and piece of black walnut.
😊
Very lovely! Can’t hardly beat black walnut!
😊
Absolutely gorgeous Phil what a lovely base for a rose bowel of course you could use it to hold keys or paper clips or loose change how ever you use it is is a beautiful piece Blessings have a super weekend
Many thanks 😊
Beautiful as always! I love the different look for each piece.
😊
A beautiful little bowl Phil . Thanks for sharing .
Thank you, Jon! 😊
Another beautiful piece! Well done.
😊
Phil, you do such a nice job with your sanding so you get that beautiful silky finish. Such patience pays off. Very nice piece.
Indeed, it does take patience, thank you! 😊
Beautiful piece. Love working with walnut.
😊
Phil, It turned out really smart and the walnut is beautiful, great job
😊
Quite beautiful! Everything about it is fantastic. Wood is majestic if you ask me.
I totally agree! 😊
Great shape! Can’t beat a bowl made from walnut. Love the color and finish. Dan
Couldn't agree more! 😊
Howdy Phil, you've got a wood lathe. Use it however you want! 😉
😊
The wood grain and the Finish is stunning. Phil as always thank you.
Glad you like it, Kim, thanks! 😊
Gotta love Walnut and the feather is way cool!
Agreed! 😊
It came out looking great 👍 thanks again for sharing with your KZhead family Phil 😊
Thanks for watching, Doug! 😊
You can never go wrong with walnut. I can identify with your pocket story. I paint and most of my clothes have smears of paint on them. It's an occupational hazard 😅!
Haha, yes, I'll bet you look colorful at the end of your day, Kristi! 😊
Very nice Phil! When you started i did not think the wood was thick enough but as usual you did a fantastic job!👍👍🤓
😊
OK that's a beautiful work of art ! You just can't beat the creativity and foresight that that Dr. Phil puts into it. Alright how many people looked at their own shirt at that comment? I did ...yup ripped with a few leftovers in there, my wife thinks I'm gonna get termites . 😂
LOL! You may need an exterminator visit, Dennis! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop And you just made look down at my pocket again.
have been wanting to view the world famous Feather Bowl that Vallery sent you! Your Instuction on how to find the center of an irregular piece was SPOT ON (LOL) (GET IT) Thanks for teaching us that don't know how. That is why ALL turners should watch his channel. he is always teaching while working (PLAYING). This method works. Oh by the way the Feather in the bottom came out beautiful. Wish it was mine> KEEP ON TURNING
Such a fine comment, Howard, thank you so much! 😊
When I first started watching you, I couldn’t understand why you didn’t just cut the outside into a circular bowl immediately. Thank goodness you have made me see the beauty in wibbly, wobbly exteriors… perfection is in the eye of the beholder.
I'm so glad you understand, now, Margaret. This is so important to me. Thank you very much! 😊
Another amazing bowl. Love it💕💕
😊
Howdy Phil from the UK 🇬🇧
Howdy! 😊
Phil, I put a strip of blue painters tape on the pocket to keep the wood chips out! Keep up the great work and Thanks!
Yeah, I've done that too, Steve. Just don't remember very often! 😊
I enjoy the irregular "bowls" you create. They are unique and one of a kind. Love it!
😊
