the Ugly Bug Ball - Woodturning Experiment, laburnum woodturning project
They say that beauty is only skin deep - well lets find out as I turn what has to be the ugliest piece of laburnum I've ever seen. Splits and rot won't stop me trying to find the beauty within. Join me at the UGLY BUG BALL

Great eye to see the beauty underneath. The years in the grain - surviving the elements, just existing - are amazing. We humans are nothing without The Trees.
I could not agree more Greg, I consider myself very lucky to be able to work with them.
I don't know anything at all about woodturning, yet I find your videos so interesting I've been binge watching your channel the past couple of days. Your work is truly beautiful! Wishing your channel much success!
Awesome, thank you. It's nice to hear the appeal is not just to turners.
Mike, Hi ! I'm a retired machinist of 50 years. Never worked with wood, just metal. I like to say I can make anything. If you can conceive of it, I can make it. In this case I want to pay you an artists compliment. Guys like us can SEE the finished product before the job is started. The drawings are in our head. You did a beautiful job here. If you think like me, you would say, God made this. We just scrape the excess protective layers away. Good scraping, sir.
Thanks for the kind words Bill, I can generally see beyond the exterior and know what I want to make, weather I can find it or not is a different matter, All the best, Mike 😃
What a beautiful piece that ugly old bit of log turned into. It was like "the ugly duckling" becoming a swan. 🥰
Thanks, I loved making this and I eventually gave it to my son for his Uni accommodation 😀
@@MikeHolton I'm betting he loves it.
@@2CraftySeniors He really does 😀
An ugly tree turned into a beautiful piece of art. Awesome.👍👍
Thanks so much 😀
What an amazing piece of wood! I'm not surprised you had to stop n stare a few times to take it all in!! It really does take your breath away!! Beautiful and beautifully done as always! 😊
Thanks! Wood grain have so much life to eat, I could never get tired of looking at it 😀
In my mind, I'm seeing the living room of a nice log cabin. There is a chandelier made from deer antlers. There's a canoe book shelf along a wall, and this beautiful piece you made is on one of the canoe shelves, OR it is up on the mantle of a fireplace. Now I'm feeling like a day trip 85 miles to the west of me to visit Waterton Lakes National Park in the Rocky Mountains.
That sounds so perfect, you paint a wonderful picture. I gave this vase to one of my sons so it is now in a shared house at a University in Leeds 😃, not quite a log cabin and I bet the smell is quite different as well 😂
That Superior Danish Oil really brought that rustic vase to life!
I know, it's very time consuming but very much turning into my favourite finish 👍
They always look great when they start off ugly . Love the knots and branches.
Haha, thanks Steve, me too 😀
From an ugly duckling to a beautiful swan. I've never heard of that type of wood but the grain/color is so caramel-ly. That turned out great!
Thanks, laburnum is fairly common in the UK but the wood is expensive. But it is also very beautiful
Absolutely not ugly. That is beautiful
Came out nice 🙂
You never know what you will get with a lump. This turned out lovely .
haha thanks 😀
Crotch grain is almost always the produces the most astounding figure! Great job and nice finishing!
Thanks and you are right, the grain does amazing things in that area 😃
I could spend hours just drinking in the beauty of this fascinating piece. Each swirl and shading in the grain offers a new dimension to explore. Superb workmanship!
Wow thanks so much! Thanks for watching, all the best, Mike
Burl Ives, The Ugly Bug Ball! Love the call back to classic Disney. Lovely work with the carving, too!
Thanks! I was thinking of a title around the word ugly and it just popped up, not even though about the song in years, now I can't get it out of my head 🤣.
I've never seen laburnum before. What a beautiful wood! Gorgeous piece.
It really is Karen, I've turned it quite a few times and it's always amazing 😄
Another superb example of a 'Nothing to Awsome' work..... Nicely done Mike...
Glad you enjoyed it, I had great fun making it, apart from the hollowing out 😀
A beautiful piece Mike laburnum never fails to impress 👌👍
It's just a beautiful wood ☺️
Always so wonderful to see what we can reveal from God's handy work! Stunning!
Thanks James 😀
Beautiful piece of wood, Mike. The knarlier it is, the more I love to turn it.
You and me both! The figure here is amazing
Stunning piece of wood, turned into another art sculpture.
Thanks Mark 😀
A very relaxing 20 minutes. Thanks Mike.
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
That viburnum wood is so swirly and beautiful! You really pull the best out of the wood you work with, Mike. 🙂
Thank you very much Barb, not sure if it was a typo or autocorrect but it's laburnum wood 😀
@@MikeHolton😊😊😊
Fine job on releasing the natural beauty in the wood.
Thanks so much Jason 😀
Well it may have looked absolutely ugly to some people but as a former Senior master of Art here in Sth. Aust. I always taught my students there was always beauty in any piece of wood. What the artist has to do is unlock that beauty. In a different form from Sculpture, the wood turner has the same challenge. You have risen to the occasion brilliantly once again Mike. This piece is quite stunning. I am sure there are MANY people who would love to have this piece on display in their home. Congratulations on a stunning piece that has been 'released' from scrap. Cheers, Don from South Australia.
Thanks Don, when I saw this piece online I had a pretty good idea what it would be like inside and just could not resist buying it. I have had so many people ask to buy it but instead I gave it to my son so will now hopefully stay in the family. All the best and I wish you a wonderful new year, Mike
Just beautiful. A silk purse out of a sow's ear!
Thank you! 😊 not heard that phrase for years lol thanks
This so beautiful with the grain and dark spots. You gave it a beautiful finish
Thanks so much Margaret
I appreciate you talking about what you are doing as you go. It makes it a better video!
Glad you think so! I get some comments about how I should shut up and get on with it but there are a thousand other channels doing that and I want to offer something different. All the best, Mike
Such a gnarly hunk-o-wood at the start and such a gorgeous piece at he end
Thanks, I love transformations like this 😀
You work really helps mother nature's natural beauty pop.
Cheers Shaun 😀
Beautiful, Im glad I saw you doing this as I was given some ,what I now know was Laburnam, beautiful grain and really nice work. :) Roger
It is an amazing wood, just be careful though is it is poisonous!
Turned beast into Exquisite Beauty!!! Thank you 🤗
Glad you like it! All the best, Mike
Mike, another fabulous piece👏👏👏👏👏👏👏💕🇬🇧
Thanks Maud 😁
That's a very beautiful piece. The grain and coloring reminds me of the mulberry that I have been turning over the last year or two.
I've never turned mulberry but I've seen it and they are similar 😀
It is beautiful. I was going to say that it reminds me of Russian Olive
@@joshuafringer2320 Never seen Russian Olive but it sounds good!
Love Laburnum…always pops out some stunning grain patterns. 🙂👍🏻
Me too Fiona, this one has been claimed by my son No3 to help decorate his room at Uni 😀
Love the grain and the natural shape , beautifully done🎉❤
Thanks so much 😊
Wow! Talk about a hidden gem. That grain and color variation is spectacular. You often mention going to sharpen up. Maybe in the future you could do a short video on how you do that. Some of us newbies might like to learn that aspect of the process and skillset.
Hi Joseph, I will do it I promise 😀
This is AMAZING, AWESOME. I'm 83 years old. My Dad showed how to use the lathe on a ShopSmith when I was 10 yrs old. Now I'm addicted to this channel. My brother now has the ShopSmith, and uses it regularly. Great channel
Thanks so much! So glad you enjoy my work, I nearly bought an old ShopSmith lathe when I started!! All the best, Mike
That is a very unique pretty vase but the wood is absolutely gorgeous!
It really is Lynda, I just love laburnum 😀
What a beautiful piece of wood from something that looks impossible to turn. To a thing that is amazing 🎉🎉
Thank you very much Graham ☺️
Gorgeous, Mike you've outdone yourself, and the Danish Oil is a perfect finish. Thankyou
Thanks Fiona, I gave this one to one of my sons to help brighten his room at uni 😀
THE FINISHED PRODUCT WAS BLESS BY THE WOOD SPIRIT ITSELF. GREAT JOB.☦
Haha thanks so much William 😀
One of NY favorite pieces so far!!!!❤
Thanks so much, I gave this to my youngest son to sit in his flat at University 😀
Beautiful. I would certainly be happy to display that piece in my apartment for all my guests to view it.
Thanks Barbara 😀 glad you liked it 😌
Your a brave man, I would not have attempted to turn that piece. But the result is stunning, thank you.
Thank you very much 😊
I love seeing the gnarly morphing into the gorgeous. Superb work!
Thank you very much Anthony 😊
Horrible piece of wood is generally what you have to turn and try to get a splendid result as this one ! Plus a superb finish using DO is making it magic ! Very well done ! JL
Thanks so much Jean
That is a STUNNING piece of wood.
Thanks 👍
Such beautiful wood! Though you get full share of the credit for bringing that beauty to life.
Thanks Susan 😁 I just found what was hiding inside 😁
That is so lovely! The Danish oil really brought out the grain. I have a feeling I'm heading down a rabbit hole of your videos.
Haha well good luck and I'll see you on the other side 😂
Amazing colour which has been brought out by the Oiling. Stunning creation
Thanks a lot 😊
Old Grotty Crotch, I almost forgot about her. Sorry, couldn’t resist. The figure on this piece. You were almost giddy about it at times. Nice work and great choice of wood!
Haha cheers Ted, yo know how I love a good figured crotch 😂😅
another stunning piece, and they say you can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear... that is amazing
Thanks so much 😊
Killer vase, keep up the great work and videos, thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much Mark 😀
High quality result! I agree; some of the oddest wood makes the best pieces! Nice job.
Thank you very much, I love trying to find hidden gems, although they are not always there 😃
You are a true artist. What a beautiful piece.
Thank you so much 😀
Amazing grain. Love how you kept the top a live edge.
Thanks 👍 that was the plan, just glad it worked 😀
I love turning gnarled bits of firewood or random knots and chunks and revealing the natural beauty hidden inside. You've done an amazing job with this piece.
Thanks so much, it's more interesting than basic bowl blanks 😀
Hello Mike. Yet again you have taken a very unassuming piece of wood and turned it into a true delight for the eye. Well done for seeing the such potential and drawing it out.
Many thanks Angela, so glad you enjoyed it, Mike 😀
@@MikeHolton Hello Mike. One of the most enjoyable elements of this, for me, was hearing your delight as the wood revealed it’s beauty. Congratulations, it is lovely.
@@Angela-en6oh haha thanks, I can get excited 😆
What gorgeous markings and such a lovely colour.❤❤❤
Thank you Karen! Cheers! 😃
Laburnum is such a fantastic wood ...Braw job ....thanks for sharing Mike
It really is, thanks Andrew 😀
Wow!
Cherry crotch areas can have some absolutely beautiful grain, I'm sure it will be worth the wait 😀
Blooming stunning piece of Laburnum
It really is, I had a feeling it would be 😀
What a piece of beauty! Well done Mike 👌
Thanks my friend 😀
A really impressive piece. I love dark colored spots which give the piece a really unique style.
Thanks Bruno, the piece is just full of character 😀
Very nice vase That Danish oil really made the grain pop.
Thanks! Danish oil is becoming my favourite finish 😀
Very nice indeed sir. You brought this piece of wood back to life. Thanks for the post, I enjoyed it.🌿 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thank you very much Rob 😀
Mike I'll give you 100% for your confidence in making something out of that , good luck
Thanks John 😀
Absolutely stunning piece, Mike. Hard to believe it came from that rugged lump. Jay
Thanks Jay, it's surprising what you can find inside 😁
That is fantastic. The grain is just beautiful.
Thanks Linda 🙂
What a beautuful piece of wood. You did it justice
Thanks Gareth 😀
Hi Mike, I cut down a Laburnum that died in my garden about 8 years ago and I have been loving it. The heart wood is very dense and dark and the sapwood is almost white. The contrast is brilliant. I only have one piece left which is sad. Yours is completely different but just as beautiful.
Hi Terry, I have turned a lot like you are describing and have a few pieces left, I just love this wood, all the best, Mike😀
I love this beautiful piece, as usual love your process Mike.
Thank you so much 😀
That vase is gorgeous
Thanks Gregory ☺️
Great work Mike top job mate 👍
That would have scared the crap out of me. The cracks looked bad. You did a very fine job.
Thanks Paul, I had a fair idea it was going to be ok and of course I was wearing protection 😃
I really enjoyed your video, especially when you stop and let us know what you are doing and what you will be doing not. 👍
Thanks Wilfrid, I just try and narrate what's going on in my head, all the best, Mike
Absolutely gorgeous vase, it is so amazing how wood can be so incredibly exquisite. Thank you for making and sharing your doing so. Sincerely, from Canada
Thank you very much, this wood is just amazing 😃
Truly lovely!
Thanks Michael 😀
Beautiful Piece ! Mike I like how you stop the lathe and show us the progress you are making. Some turning videos I've watched will do a time lapse after they start and the viewer does not really get a true sense of the process. it's nice to see it in the more broken down phases and watch the piece reveal itself. New subscriber learning from a pro, thank you.
Thank you very much and I'm glad you like the format, I've had a few requests to just "get on with it" lol but I'm happy doing it this way 😁
I’ve overlooked so many cool pieces of wood due to appearance that I would love to have now. I notice the moment where you pause to take in the grain pattern. Ahhh the moment every turner lives for… to see the grain swirl and dance before our eyes. Makes you almost forget we’re all still there watching doesn’t it my friend? Lol.
Haha it really does, on the prize bowl when the lathe came to a final stop after the polish I gave a very child like giggle of happiness, which I edited out 😂
@@MikeHolton Lol. I would have left it in! I get so excited to see the magic pop when putting finish on a piece. I just made a platter from some Chinese elm that had me dancing a little jig after applying some abrasive paste and some ob shine juice. Lol
@@k9insomniac783 Haha, I would have paid to see you dance a jig 🤣
@@MikeHolton You would have only paid once lol. Probably looked more like a seizure
@@k9insomniac783 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
As I approach retirement wood turning is one of the things I am interested in and your channel provides fabulous examples and explanations. Thank you !
Thank you very much Eddy, I'm there in 13 years and can't wait so I can do a lot more 😀
Hi Mike, I was chuckling listening to you commenting on and making your nice noises about how beautiful this laburnum is. Only true wood lovers would do that. It is a lovely looking piece for what would otherwise be firewood. I had never heard of laburnum before but will keep my eyes open for some in the future. The Danish oil is a very nice touch also. Cheers, Bill Riley
Haha thanks Bill, if you find some do be careful as laburnum is poisonous so take due care. All the best, Mike
stunning
Thank you! 😊
Another masterpiece created. Well done, it looks fantastic.
Glad you like it! 😀
Beautiful work. Beautiful wood. This piece would look great in my house.
Haha thanks Paul but I'm keeping this one 😀
Beautiful!
Thank you!
Nice job on that ugly stick Mike turned out beautifully!
Haha thanks 😀
That turned out to be very beautiful, thank you for sharing your talent with us.
You are so welcome and thanks for watching 😀

This was a lot of fun 😊
That is just so nice! Glad you didn't fill the cracks or level the rim, looks all the better for that👍
Thanks Chris, wood like this needs to show it's natural side 😄
Some people are just wood wizard's, brilliant.
Haha thanks 👍
Awesome piece, love it 👍
Thank you very much Terry 😀
The Danish Oil certainly brought out the beauty of the grain Mike
It looked as nice as I had hoped it would but then again laburnum is fairly hard to mess up lol 😀
Wow! Fabulous, that grain is amazing 👍
It really is! Happy with this one 😄
