Woodturning - Enormous/Very Wet Aspen Bowl!

I just about maxed out my lathe on this one! In fact, you can hear the lathe squeal a little bit when it starts to turn the full log. I had to rough out the bowl and then put it into an oven for about 12 hours to really get it dry and ready to turn.
Thanks for watching, liking and subscribing. Really helps me out!

  • Now that's a challenge and a half! The Laguna did squeal a tad but she's a keeper and stood up to the beast. Well done mate!

  • If a piece of wood is big enough to make a Laguna lathe drive belt squawk, you know it’s heavy. Nice work man.

    • @@CASWoodcraft Hopefully one day I’ll be able to graduate to a big boy lathe myself. I bought a 10x18 harbor freight lathe to learn and see if it was something I would like and stick with. Now it’s been 3 years. It’s safe to say that I enjoy it. lol. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to get a Laguna, which I consider the best you can own and use, but I’ll certainly get something bigger.

  • This bowl turned out nice. I am intrigued by your technique, i.e., the use of compression clamps and the oven. I am hoping you will respond to the requests of others regarding the kitchen oven treatment. Thank you!!!

    • I put it in at 170 for about 12 hours. The compression clamps seem to help avoid splits.

  • Nice piece! Did you find that the 12 hours in the oven was enough? Or, does it still want to move?

  • Nice bowl! What was that product you used for the cracks and endgrain filler? Looks like it cured with UV light?

  • I didn't know how beautiful aspen wood is. How long did you keep this in the oven and what temperature?

    • Thanks. I was the guy who came up to you at church. Lived in Illinois when I subscribed to you. Now live in Franktown. Am also the brother in law of James who had an aspen cut down maybe six months ago. I am hoping that the aspen on this video was from him because i have some of the same wood too. Can''t believe how beautiful it is. Can't wait to work with it.@@CASWoodcraft
