Did Kobe Bryant deserve only ONE MVP???

As someone who is often involved in the G.O.A.T debate, how is it a player of Kobe's caliber was only able to capture one MVP award in a 20 year career?

    • That's a good point. The reason as to why Nikola and Russ won the MVP with under 50 wins and Kobe didn't is based on a few things. #1 They broke larger scale NBA records. Jokic set the regular season PER record that was previously held by Wilt Chamberlain and then he became the 1st player in NBA history to record 2,000 pts- 1,000 rebounds and 500 assist in a season. Westbrook also hit the triple double mark which hadn't been done before in a half century. On top of that they both led teams to a top 6 seed in their conference with little to no help. Russ also had a narrative boost since KD had left.

Kobe remained the best all around two way player in the league til around 2012. Lebron was close but Lebron wasn't an animal on Defense like Kobe. Kobe has 12 All Defense, Lebron only 6. It's the 2 way dynamic that separates Kobe from the rest.

    • @@jaydubb2005 It's a possibility that might be the case. At the end of the day, for that to be true he needed to win at least 50+ games each year. If he checked all of the MVP boxes and won 50+ games and still didn't win a MVP, the NBA knew it was their best interest not to crown as the best player. The NBA doesn't like controversy in the Colorado case subject, but they love controversy if it only has to do with basketball.

  • Kobe definitely should've gotten more MVP regular season awards but it is what it is. I remember Kobe leading a team that had both Smush Parker as the point guard and Chris Mihm as the center to the playoffs. That team was far worse than the Nuggets team that Jokic had with Murray and Jokic got a MVP.

  • The MVP has always been a popularity contest for the media. The media loved Shaq and chose Shaq's side during that nonsense rivalry. That solidified the fact that Kobe was never going to get the nod while they played together. Then once they split, the media chose sides which guaranteed Kobe wasn't going to get the nod. The Colorado case didn't help, and with the arrival of LeBron (the new media darling whom all of them wanted to be the greatest of all time so that they could say they called him the greatest since high school) it was just a waiting game for them until they could justify them giving him as many MVPs as possible. It always has been, and always will be, a popularity contest for the media. The players should be the only ones who vote for this award.

That player then hits their stride both individually & with team success & thats when the mvp's come. Kobe's career didn't line up like that. He started his career with shaq who was not only a great player but was older than kobe & lost his prime a couple of years premature. when he left the lakers the lakers had to rebuild around kobe & that simply takes time. So kobe "wasted" 3 years of his prime (probably the best 3) on really bad & average coached teams.

In the 90’s it was Jordan getting back to backs, Tim Duncan and Steve Nash in the 2000’s, Lebron, Steph, Giannis in the 2010’s, and now Jokic in the 2020’s. Other MVPs were pretty deserving of their awards when Kobe had a chance like Dirks 2007 season after they lost in the finals came back and dominated to 67 wins but got upset by the Warriors. Nash was running a high powered offense with winning results in the regular season and changed the tempo of the NBA. Kevin Garnett was a two way force himself in 2004. And then Lebron started his run after Kobe’s mvp season.

Mimicking play style of Jordan (yes Mike shared knowledge, techniques with Kobe, others got mad as he turned them down) was possibly perceived by most fans as NOT surpassing Jordan...as his UNC knowledge base made Jordan "gel" through and through, very smart, efficient in movements and execution precision. Jordan = Winner, and reason several 'greats' could not obtain rings, Kobe WAS very close though, defensively too. Why skill AND perception plays into it: Like many, I am familiar with public reactions and percetions, AND great ball. BUT, I saw Jordan's idols (Dr. J. etc.) play live in Greensboro, NC in the ABA in 70's, grew up with "UNC, Two rings 'Showtime' Laker great Bob McAdoo, NBA MVP, 3× Scoring Champ" (and went to UNC 'with' Jordan, saw his NCAA 'performance'). Jordan was robbed in 97 by Malone (but Jordan already had 4 MVPs and "bored fans wanted a change"), and Jordan also should have MVP for 90 and 93! [ SEE the video link, many bad MVP's,] 👉Kobe wasn't only one shafted.💯] kzhead.info/sun/ZL5-pJVvj6aue6s/bejne.html ...and Kobe SHOULD be more discussed whenever Jordan - LeBron 🐐 talk spews!

I don't know why the NBA didn't give Jordan the MVP in 1997. I think the case could be made that he should have wom MVP in 1993, but lost to Barkley, another good player, but Jordan was on another caliber in 1993. God Bless.

  • I agree with AI. I think it’s really disrespectful every time ESPN has one of these debates about “who is the goat Michael Jordan or LeBron James?” I understand LeBron is going to retire with probably the best stats ever but like Jalen Rose said, stats aren’t everything. And I’m not a LeBron James hater at all I think he gets way too much heat but LeBron is having great stats this year while he’s losing. This is the worst year for a LeBron James team ever but he’s still putting up great numbers but those stats don’t really matter at the end of the day if you’re losing. I think LeBron James is great but the people that argue that he’s the goat are clinging to stats and only stats. And I’m sorry the whole “he went to the NBA finals nine times in a row” doesn’t really hold up to real basketball fans and players or coaches when if you go to the finals nine times in a row and during those nine trips to the finals you only walked away with three championships, it doesn’t really matter how his stats were in those nine times. Look I’m not saying stats don’t matter because all the greats have amazing stats but it was never the end-all be-all in the goat discussion and tell people had to change the argument to fit LeBron James in if you have to change the argument to fit your guy then he’s not the goat. I thought everyone at ESPN had really lost their minds from 2008 to 2010 because they kept saying every year it was going to be the Lakers versus the Cleveland Cavaliers and LeBron was going to beat the Lakers. Kobe made it to the finals every one of those years and walked away with two championships and LeBron couldn’t even make it to the dance and that made those Nike puppet commercials with LeBron James and Kobe Bryant look really silly that anyone was even having the argument oh and by the way the two teams LeBron James couldn’t get through which made him finally leave Cleveland and go start an All-Star team in Miami, Boston in Orlando, those were the two teams Kobe Bryant beat for his last two championships. If you would’ve told Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant and Larry Bird and Magic Johnson that in 2022 winning multiple titles wasn’t what made you a goat but your stats they could’ve easily stuffed their stats in regular season games that didn’t matter. The reason that people that don’t have a bias to make the argument and have an agenda for LeBron James as the goat never put stats above championships was because everyone knew winning multiple championships was much harder than stats. So all that being said I absolutely believe that Kobe Bryant should have had more than one NBA Reagan VP. The way the MVP is decided really isn’t who the best player in the league is unfortunately, it’s who’s the best player in the lead on a team that has a certain amount of wins over 500. And during Kobe‘s prime unfortunately even though he was the greatest player in the league the Lakers weren’t a good team. It was Kobe Bryant and Lamar Odom and they really didn’t start getting good until 2006 and that 2006 and 2007 season I think hands-down Kobe should’ve gotten the MVP. I personally believe that Kobe should’ve won the MVP award from 2007 through 2010 every year. He should’ve had four league in VPs but because the NBA really wanted LeBron James as the face of the league, and the minute he went to Miami they stopped giving him that kind of love but I really do think that’s why Kobe was robbed of three league in VPs was because they were trying to get people to forget about Kobe. Michael Jordan is the goat and I would never say that Kobe or LeBron is better than him it amazes me that 98% of the people that watched all three of these players play give it to Michael Jordan but it’s everyone who never saw Michael play and didn’t really start watching the NBA until around 2011 don’t even care to go back and watch old Team of the NBA 20 years before. My generation has no problem giving props to Magic Johnson Larry Bird even though we were too young to really understand their greatness but we still give them props because they deserve it they were great, they are legends.

  • The skill thing again means nothing. Marc Gasol is better than Shaq in the high post and the mid post, he’s a better 3 point shooter, FT shooter and mid range shooter, he is a better ball handler, a better playmaker/passer, a better on ball defender, help defender and ball denier, and better at the pick and roll, both as a screener/defender Now tell me which player is better? Skillset doesn’t equate to impact

    • But you can’t compare what happens in today’s NBA to 2000’s. It’s basically entirely new generation with only Lebron and Chris Paul as that last bit of 2000s stars. Just because Jokic has won two MVPs in this time doesn’t mean we have to think Kobe should have more than a player like Jokic. He got 1 in his career and that’s enough.

Shaq on the other hand probably got robbed in 2005, but another piece of criteria is you basically need to be in your prime and he wasn't. That said, I don't know about his top 5 argument with just 1. The criteria is suspect but it counts for plenty.
