Not the case, based on the criteria for past MVP’s…Kobe was still voted All NBA first team defense, Finals MVP, and received significant league MVP votes, yet it was the wins that hurt him…you cannot expect MVP votes, when you have Caron Butler and Lamar Odom as teammates and don’t have a winning record. You cannot win MVP without wins.

And in 2009 The Lakers had 1 less win than the Cavs, but the cavs played in the east that featured 3 playoff teams that couldn't get above .500. Meanwhile the west featured only 2 teams with less than 50 wins. The least of which had 48. For the 2006 Season, the Pistons, Spurs, AND the Mavs all had More wins than the Suns, yet Nash still won. The criteria is exactly as mounstursz described it. The media has always been biased against Kobe since they fueled and took sides with the Kobe/Shaq feud and the Colorado case only emboldened them. He was lucky to get the one MVP.

Kobe was considered as the best player by players and coaches from 2003-2010s....even Lebron said it multiple times. The MVP criteria are a joke. They gave it to Russ bc nobody has done it since the Big O. Well then he should get the next 2 as well bc nobody has done it for 3 straight seasons which is even more impressive than 1.

Awesome vid imo I think Kobe should’ve won in ‘03. ‘06. ‘07 & deserved ‘08 that he got. 03: 30ppg on shooting 48.3% EFG% with 7 assists & 6 boards pg 06: 35ppg on shooting 49.1% EFG% with 5.3 & 4.5 07: 31ppg on shooting 50% EFG% & 5.7 & 5.4 I think people look at basic stats (FG %) when it comes to Kobe’s shooting efficiency. Not his advanced where he was always efficient/ effective using EFG% or TS% from ‘00 to ‘13 But his 15 all NBA selections speak for themselves (2nd most ever)
But his impact on winning wasn't as great as Tim Duncan, Steve Nash and Dirk during those seasons
I don't know if anybody remembers those times but I remember Kobe was hated by the media because Kobe did not answer the questions and wasn't smiling, and he was very serious and he really didn't care for the media that much, so it was a 2 way street so they didn't give him any love and he didn't give them any love. He just wanted to win Championships. All that other stuff was just window dressing🐍💛💜
He became like that after Denver when the media tried endlessly to tear him and his family down.

Nash deserved it in 05 and maybe in 06 but Kobe definitely should’ve won that considering he had an histrionic season. 07 was Dirk’s year. 09 is arguably Kobe’s year. And 03 is an argument for Kobe but Duncan had the most success

He didn't even deserve the MVP he got that year. It was nowhere near his best season and he wasn't the best or most valuable player when he won. Everyone forgets that a lot of people disliked Kobe until his last few seasons and he was never seen as the clear best player in the league. Kobe was a great player, but nowhere near the GOAT and barely in the top 10.

Great video you made excellent points the only context I would say you missed is that nba also wanted to promote Nash’s style of play bringing the nba from Hero (iso ball) back to team ball. Which one of the variables that affected Nash mvps 2009 is dateable however all that post season stuff is not regular season which the metric is judge by for mvp otherwise Kobe would have 2 and maybe have case for top ten than top 15.
Kobe could have had 3 mvps at the most, 2009 and 2010 mvps would have been his but the Lakers didn't win more games than the Cavs so they went Lebron. The one in 06 was not Kobes tbh, it could have been him if he was a top 4 seed but imo Dirk deserved it..

In the regular season Cavs won more, if the Lakers won more Kobe would have won those mvps, an its really interesting to think about, if the Lakers won more those 2 years Kobe would have 3 MVPs Lebron would only have 2. Yeah, in 09 LeBron was 3-4 vs the elite teams in east, and 0-2 vs Kobe…I think there was so much excitement to celebrate LeBron because of the amazing young force that he was, especially with the win shares he posted, the voters probably jumped the gun giving it to him, and it looks worse now over time, with Kobe being short changed.

Its a regular season award, the cavs winning more games leaves no argument for Kobe BUT imo Kobes resume makes up for it in all nba 1st team selections and all nba defense selections. I got Kobe 3rd all time after Lebron and Mike, I will say this also, if the Lakers won a couple more games in 2009 and 2010 and Kobe wins those mvps over Lebron, Kobe would be over Lebron tbh those years Kobe elevated his status but if they won more regular season games and he won those mvps he would have been elevated that much more, AND Lebron would only have 2 mvps which would have never allowed Jordan vs Lebron to exist, it would have been laughable to even put him over Kobe. I would like to get your opinion do you think if he played with better teams after SHAQ left? He would’ve had better statistics and efficiency. For example, the game would be much easier if I’m playing with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosch and I don’t have to worry about coming through in the clutch or always trying to bring my team back
I have real questions about Kobe’s motivations on the Lakers. Obviously he was laser focused on winning and being the best player he could be with a relentless work ethic, but it seems like he was chasing Jordan’s legacy, and wanted to win while being the sole offensive force as Jordan had. I wonder if he resented sharing the load with Shaq, and envied, specifically Allen Iverson and his solo role, without having to share the spotlight. I look at the 2005 season after Shaq left, when he had help in another scoring guard with Caron Butler, and it didn’t mesh well at all. So, I don’t think a player like Dwayne Wade would have been a good pairing…in that era, to win titles, while being massively ball dominant, you must be hyper efficient, and that’s reflected in the FG%’s of leading scorers of early 2000’s champions.(with the elite defensive ensemble 2004 Pistons being the lone exception)

Ive come to realize lately mvps dont mean anything. Its a voted on award. There's homers voting, theres bias. Theres limited viewing. Just look at some of the votes every year lol. I use to think mvps mattered in ranking players all time and against each other, but it doesn't. Titles, non longevity stats and the eye test and how much help are what matter.

I specifically said I would only examine the years through Kobe’s retirement…with Westbrook and later Jokic, they both won with lower seeds, which caused people to question the criteria of voters. Was it a product of the player empowerment era,where team stacking would lead to only a small handful of players having a chance to win? So voters started voting for players with lesser records or stat based novelties like averaging a triple double over a full season? It’s a topic for another video, but the fact is, no one won it with a lower seed than 4th during Kobe’s career.

Shaq and Kobe don’t have more MVP’s because the 3 peat lakers weren’t a regular season team. They usually never had the best record in the west. It was usually the Kings or the Spurs with the best record. Unless you do something historic like Russ in 2017, the mvp goes to the best player on the best team (record wise).

If you were trying to say 'the mvp goes to best player in ONE of best team', Shaq and Kobe's Lakers definitely fits the criteria.
