  • The case for Nash in 05 is that the Suns jumped from 29 wins to 62 wins when he joined the team. That is a pretty amazing turnaround. He didn't score a whole lot but he led the league in assists and the Suns had the best offense in the league and he was a main reason why. Playmakers usually get overlooked in favor of big scorers.

    • Advanced stats weren't nearly popular enough at that time to give Chris Paul traction. Back in the day, John Hollinger wrote on ESPN how Paul's efficiency was historically great for a young point guard, but MVP voters were more interested in traditional stats and wins/losses to see exactly how good Paul was that year. I think if Kobe already had a handful of MVP awards then CP3 would've won MVP that year, but the media story of that season was that Kobe led the Lakers to their first ever 1-seed post-Shaq and Kobe hadn't won an MVP yet.

    • @@jonnyarnett Kobe sealed that MVP win in 2008 in the matchup vs Chris Paul's Hornets that season. Kobe's dominance in THAT game was what sealed the MVP for him vs CP3. Had CP3 dominated that game instead, he would have likely won the MVP. But when the lights were on, Kobe showed he was the superior player, and thus won the MVP. In 2008, despite what Chris Paul did for his team, Kobe was still a better player than him, as stats never tell the entire story. It's why Kobe won it in 2008, and why when they matched up with MVP basically on the line in the eyes of the pundits, Kobe dominated.

  • They need to put players back in charge of MVP voting. The notion that the press are somehow less biased stewards of player evaluation than the players themselves has been thoroughly empirically refuted. If there's going to be an example of certain players getting blackballed, the media can report on that, as can the players themselves using social media. Also, I absolutely agree that defense gets the short shrift in MVP voting and the overall estimation of players and their value/impact. Barkley had a great season but MJ was the league leader in steals, league leader in scoring, better assist per game, and even Charles knew MJ was the better player that season. 94-Hakeem-No need to explain. 95-Hakeem-Average more points, steals, blocks, assist and same rebounds than Robinson. 96-MJ 97-MJ-More points, steals with almost the same blocks and assist than Malone, Karl only really had better rebounds per game than MJ.Plus the mailman doesn''t deliver on sundays LMFAO. 98-MJ 99-Shaq-More points, rebounds and blocks than Malone. Overall better player that year. Conclusion: MJ should have won 8 MVPs in his career, Kobe and LeBron should have more MVPs and I honestly feel sorry for KARL and CHARLES. They only won because the media was tired of giving the MVP to MJ.

    • Robinson deserved his MVP over Hakeem. I know Hakeem killed him in the playoffs, but the MVP doesn't take playoffs into account, and peak Robinson was one of the most statistically efficient players ever. Robinson had a 29.1 to 26.0 advantage in PER, 10.7 to 5.1 in Offensive Win Shares, 6.7 to 5.6 in Defensive Win Shares, 6.0 to 2.8 in Offensive Box Plus/Minus, 3.2 to 2.6 in Defensive Box Plus/Minus, 8.7 to 5.4 in VORP, 120 to 110 in Offensive Rating, and 99 to 100 (lower is better ) in Defensive Rating. In less formula-driven stats, he had the higher FG%, TS%, higher offensive and total rebounding percentages, lower turnover rate, and the same block percentage. On top of that, the Spurs were 15 games ahead of Houston in the standings, and Robinson only sat out one game while Hakeem sat out 10. Hakeem and his fans can be salty that Robinson won the MVP that year, but Robinson earned that regular-season award.

That's why LeBron hasn't won an MVP award in ages, because he's ratchets his play down in the regular season, and then essentially outplays everyone in the playoffs. That said, the MVP probably should go to the guy with the best regular season stats. You don't deserve credit for coasting unless coasting still leaves you as the best player in the league.

    • That's it exactly. People just look at the stats and don't see Nash's season as impressive. But you're absolutely right, everyone around Nash had career years, and to encapsulate that just as "assists" misses so much. Even advanced stats don't always tell the story. Fact is, Suns had one of the top offenses in the league, Stoudemire went down, and they kept going without missing a beat. That has to count for something, I'm not mad about Nash's awards

    • @@greywolf2155 And that's not to mention that he shot 50/40/90, he revolutions the style of basketball which most teams now play some version of. It was really impressive that he was able to push the tempo the way did, and although he had a fast, undersized team, he didn't rely solely on the fastbreak the way Magic's Lakers did, and instead was able to still push the tempo running set plays in that 7 seconds or less offense, which is extremely impressive, as even Magic lacked in this area. He could also score when he needed to, which people tend to forget. He was more than capable of creating his own shot. And as far as his defense, he may not have been a great defender, but he was always willing step in and take a charge on a switch. In fact, he was one of the best at drawing charges in the entire league. I haven't checked the precious stats to back this up, but it's something that was no doubt true if you actually watched his games. The impacted that horrible team immediately as soon as he got there. I guarantee you that without Nash they wouldn't have even made the playoffs, but he took them to a top seed. There are different ways to come up with what an MVP is - the NBA goes to one extreme and only looks for the success and you go to the other extreme and look for the hard facts. For me, the MVP is the player that makes the most difference for a team - so I take the words "most valuable player" very literally. Imagine that Lakers team without Shaq - they would maybe not win the title, but they would still be good. Now imagine that 76ers team without AI...they would probably have missed the playoffs all together.

  • The thing is the "best player" and the "most valuable player" are 2 completely different things. The MVP is based on the mentality/narrative that the one thing that really matters is winning a championship. With that in mind, one can understand why your team needs to make the playoffs in order to win MVP since you don't even have an opportunity to win a chip otherwise. In this new brand of basketball that has developed during the 2010s, the one thing that matters most has moved to stat lines and advanced metrics. I feel like the MVP will keep going to the player who, if you take him off his team, makes the difference between being a contender or not as it should in a league where the goal of playing all these games remains to win the championship. Bottom line, the best player in the league isn't necessarily the most valuable to his team that year and that's how it is and has been in any league at any level if you value winning over stats.

  • Ok so you said that Allen Iverson didn’t impact the game on defense during his MVP season but he literally led the league in steals that season. And he was not an elite defender but he was a very good defender considering his height.

  • this is a great idea, and a very interesting topic. with that said though. 01: Iverson was the best player because he didn't have another star that he was playing with. he led his team to the finals. He had to go up against Kobe and Shaw. if he had a star big man like let's say Tim Duncan, I can assure you that series goes much different. could argue, the lakers lose that series. 03: This could be one of Duncan's worst teams that he won the finals with, and he had great numbers. plus he proved that he was better by destroying shaq and Kobe in the playoffs. 05: the suns had the best record in the west. the wolves didn't even make the playoffs. I'm sorry but if damn near half the league makes the playoffs, and you can't make it in, something is wrong. please keep in mind, this isn't the superteam era. one superstar is enough to ATLEAST make the playoffs. 06: isn't this the year that Nash didn't have Amare for most of the season? and yet they were still the 2nd seed? 07: lol the same year Dirk led his team to 67 wins? that team overachieved that year. unfortunately for them they got destroyed in the playoffs. 08: sadly this is the one year Kobe actually deserved the MVP. this is probably Kobe's most mature year as a leader and a overall basketball player. it showed, as they had the best record in the west. going forward... when talking about an overall great player, I think we need to start using categories like leadership, and delegating responsibilities to other teammates. no nash wasn't a two way player, but clearly he didn't need to be. same with dirk, as the won 67 games in 06. If forget where, but Larry Brown was asked what makes a superstar.... he answered, being able to make his teammates better. it's something kobe has rarely done, same with kg. that is why they weren't better those years. Kobe actually did it in 08, and it showed. Overall great video though
