  • One of the main criticisms about AJ is his stamina , and this fight with the weight came in at he did well . It's not always about the KO.

Im not worried that he never got a KO the worrying thing is at no time did he look willing to engage , he looked like a deer caught in the headlights out there. Ruiz and Usyk done a number on his psyche

  • "I can't live in other people's expectations"..."I can't put myself under that pressure"...Although I'm disappointed deep down I didn't get the knockout, "what's wrong with me going 12 rounds?" PERFECT answers and mindset, as well as good life's lessons. People expect too much from other people, not caring about what those people are going through on the inside. That is what it means to be selfish. We all need to learn to appreciate the little people do to make progress in life and to achieve their dreams. The story would be different if AJ lost. So, I'd rather be happy for the win than blast him for not putting up a fiery performance which one part of me wanted.

  • Derrick James coaching showed a lot of improvements. Fans want a knock out. Anyone can punch. Especially heavyweights. But we had to see if this guy could ever improve and adapt against the best heavyweights. He needs go stay in Texas and learn from Derrick and their team. He looked good. Cardio at his heaviest, footwork, head movement, counter jab in his arsenal. I love AJs guard. His damn arms are so big it covers his whole front. Joshua needs a few more fights. Vs fury is too soon. Against Wilder he might be OK but he has to move that head more. Parker, Whyte. That's good money for AJ and confidence built. Try Usyk again for the 3rd time lol I'm convinced Derrick James is a HOF coach.

    • Interesting analysis. However, it presents AJ as a prospect. He's an established fighter whose technique is improving but who has lost aggression and finishing instinct. He looks tentative and doesn't use his size as weapon to lean, push and bully opponents. Fury, Wilder and even Joyce will present him with far greater threats than Franklin. The AJ we've seen post Ruiz hasn't been the same as the one who was dominating the division. That's about mindset. Eddie Hearn has been honest in his assessments and says that opponents think they have a chance because of AJ's more cautious fighting style. Unless James can bring out the warrior, no amount of technical improvement is going to put Johsua amongst the heavyweight elite.

If you can't see that then you have even LESS idea about 'how boxing works' than I initially though. Definitely lacks a little more aggression which I think will come now he's off the mark again. Thought was hard fight as ref shit and franklin a dirty fighter kept bowling in wasn't warned once. • New Dawn? New Yawn unfortunately, but something for AJ to build on. Job done though, Whyte rematch next would be perfect, but if Usyk defends against Wilder next, then AJ and Dubois wouldn’t be a bad idea I think. In fairness, I think if AJ had got Franklin out of there early, people would criticise saying Franklin was just a bum (he ain’t), and if he wins on points, it shows he’s not ‘back’. He was always going to be damned if he does, damned if he don’t really!

  • I said that AJ should have a year with Derrick James before even considering getting back in the ring! Hopefully his next fight will be at least 8 months from now! You can see some of the things DJ is teaching him but a full year of learning you would have seen a lot more of a difference! AJ still has no head movement and he needs to learn what punches to throw and when to throw them! 2 things DJ can't fix are AJ'S chin and his heart because I truly believe that Andy Ruiz took AJs heart and confidence in the first fight and he's never been the same since! AJ needs about 3 to 4 more fights before he even considers getting in the ring with Wilder or Fury or Usyk!

  • Cant really argue with any of that, Carl. I agree that since the ruiz fight hes just not been the same, he appears to be "gun shy" as if hes worried of letting more than a couple of shots at a time go because of whats coming back, i dont think he believes in his ability to take a punch anymore and more importantly recover from taking a punch. You could see some improvements from working with james, seemed to be moving on his feet better - started off with a nice ramrod like jab that stopped happening after 2-3 rounds, james was asking for body shots that never really got let go - was also asking for AJ to throw his right hand through franklins jab which he did do a few times but again sort of stopped doing. He seems more frustrated with himself the past couple of fights, blowing his top at the end of the fights.. id like him to just get biting down on the gumshield and letting his hands go, fight a bit dirty - use his size and weight and get his head in there on the opponents chest, use his arms/elbows to rough it up and create openings to let his hands go. I dont think people are giving Franklin enough credit either though, hes a decent operator - fast hands, a bit durable and a bit of a cat knows his to survive and fires back when he gets caught etc, he cant be THAT bad hes been the distance now with both whyte and aj and they can both punch at the end of the day.

He didn't knock out Franklin, sure, but he won easily. He was in control by a mile throughout and he wasn't hurt or gassed out at all. Good enough for a first step on the comeback road, but he'll have to do a whole lot more to stand a real chance against Fury, Wilder, or Joyce. No doubt.

I think he will even notice the “fear” thru this fight. Big test this fight, for future him.

  • Why criticize? The fight is won, I found him quite professional, he started to take sensations towards round 7, the pressure is a little gone. Having a longer fight is good for AJ, allows him to see how everything is with the new trainer, his conditioning looked much better as well. He looked good, totally owned Franklin.
