Earthquakes are legit so scary. I still remember being on the 4th floor when a 7.2 magnitude Earthquake hit. It was one of the scariest moment of my life. It literally felt like you were in the ocean with massive waves, the ground felt so pliable. The aftershocks were the worst. While we stood outside we'd see cars getting slightly lifted off the ground and we'd hear random loud crashes; it would be roofs caving in. The aftershock lasted for a month and I'd always freak out thinking it was another huge one >.

Legit an aftershock happened here while I was reading this comment. I've experienced 7.1 7.4 and a 7.8 snd they're genuinely traumatising. I was home in all of them and the way all the doors in the house were moving and furnitures were falling on the floor, I was so sure the apartment would collapse and we'd die.

To be honest, it's probably just on a gyroscopic stabilizer or a similar stabilization rig: it's originally designed to allow for smooth camera movement without expensive rail-mounted camera tracking shots. So long as the cameraman doesn't drop the camera/rig, the camera would stay perfectly level throughout the earthquake. The reason why Hollywood's fight scenes are utter trash these days is because either the executives, the directors, the producers, and/or the cameramen think that having the camera jerk around and cut all over the place somehow makes the fight scene more "realistic" or "gritty". I don't know why it's taking so long for those inside the Hollywood Bubble to learn that the ADHD camera movement actually just makes the fight look more "fake" and "shitty"...

As an Alaskan, I can relate to being in a big earthquake, I was in the anchorage 2018 quake and my cats still have some sort of ptsd thing that comes out whenever a small quake happens. Also, did you know that the Aleutian Islands only exist because of two tectonic plates?

Because we've destroyed so much of burrowing owl native habitat and vegetation (and subsequently the other species that build the original burrows that the owls widen/modify and inhabit once empty), the only current way to quickly make amends is to build artificial burrows for them. They are the world's only fossorial owl (ie, live underground).

He was talking about how they were going to fix the city damaged in a foreshock the day before. You can see horror in his eyes as the earthquake happens. For the next hour after the earthquake the mayor and a couple of other people were doing CPR on a little girl who died.
