  • The phrase Dr. Mike was thinking of was "don't think about a pink elephant." A 'White Elephant' is a gift exchange where everyone brings a silly gift that will be more trouble for the recipient to use or get rid of than the cost of the gift. It's named for the tradition of bringing white elephants to the Thai King.

    • Oh and a white elephant was a gift FROM the king if he really wanted to burden you, because it was sacred and it was a great honor, you couldn’t get rid of it, so you were stuck feeding and caring for this massive animal for decades.

  • My kid was a baby model, so I have a bit of insight into this. Basically, babies have agents, like Sam said. My kid was accepted into a "school" designed specifically for child actors, and they accept everything from newborns to middle-schoolers. After middle school, the kid actors would typically have some other type of acting agency into which they would be registered. The school had a huge 300-page catalog of headshots of all the students which directors would peruse to find the right kid to cast. The school had acting and oration classes to prepare kids to be on TV. For babies and toddlers, it would be about training them to smile on cue or do cute baby things without crawling all over the place. For older kids, it was script reading and emoting. My own kid was only ever in one "how babies play" type video, and we pulled him out after that. It was very tough for him because of the long hours and need to stay focused (1yo kids can't focus). Not to mention the crazy parents trying to turn their kids into stars.

    @BlakeMcCringleberry@BlakeMcCringleberry9 күн бұрын
    • I just read an article about how the British show "Call the Midwife" casts so many newborns. Babies there can get an agent basically at birth and can work at 15 days old but can only be on camera 15 minutes at a time with mandated breaks in between. For that reason, they prefer twins.

      @ElizabethT45@ElizabethT459 күн бұрын
    • "the crazy parents trying to turn their kids into stars" you mean, like yourself?

      @skolarii@skolarii9 күн бұрын
    • @@skolarii There's definitely some truth to that. Mostly, though, we went in on a lark, and maybe we'd have some interesting baby photos and videos to show at his wedding later. But some other parents are way over the top about it. They've invested so much energy into their kid's "career" and it's 100% more about the parents wanting fame than about the kid. I remember one kid (maybe 1yo) was clearly not into whatever the activity was, but the mom was moving its arms and legs like a marionette in front of the instructors so that it wouldn't be ejected from the program. It wasn't healthy at all.

    • I remember seeing somewhere that twins and triplets are paid to play new borns cause they were born a lot earlier and look more like a newborn than a baby who isn't. Also, they are a loophole with getting around the filming hours restrictions when it came to kids on set.

    @benrast1755@benrast17559 күн бұрын

  • As a health inspector, I love seeing Dr mike talk about food safety/bacteria. I investigate and work to find the causes of foodborne illness. Something that people might find interesting is that I hate when doctors tell someone that they have food poisoning without explaining. They never explain. I get it though. In terms of patient management, a diagnosis of food poisoning is enough. However, food poisoning is more of a description of a set of symptoms and not really an illness. I get calls all the time of people saying their doctor told them they have food poisoning, but that tells me nothing. Food safety is a super interesting thing.

So here I am trying to take a food history and they refuse to disclose where or what else they are because, "I know I got sick here and my doctor agreed". I can somewhat accept that he meant carbohydrates, although I kinda doubt it because sugar has different problematic effects on the body than carbohydrates in general and Mike knows the difference between the two. I rather think he meant the humongous amount of added sugars in US food (and both flour products and tomato products are comparatively good to add sugars to). But making the sugar/carbohydrate point in a way that implies I'm stupid or bringing up preposterous lines of argumentation, either one, just make you look like a troll or an idiot.

  • I've had multiple casts after surgeries on my legs to help me walk because of my cerebral palsy and when I was younger I used to be terrified of the cast saw mostly because of the noise but it also scared me when the doctor was trying to let me know it was safe by putting the saw on their skin lol. Love your breakdowns keep up the great work.

If I'm lucky I'll eventually capture an arhythmia episode and we'll know what kind since it never happens when I have the holter
