Charlie's Angels is fun, but also pretty damn cheesy. We had a great time doing a movie commentary and reaction for it, despite its weaker moments. We'll probably get to the sequel sooner or later, but we've obviously got a few other sequels to do first. Next commentary and reaction video will be for Lilo & Stitch!

This movie is not without controversy: Bill Murray, Bosley, got into a fight with Lucy Liu, saying that she has "no talent and that she's a TV actress and nothing more." Murray was then replaced by Bernie Mac in the sequel.

Clue is one of my favourite mystery movie's of all time I hope they do a commentary on it.
I know you guys complain about the myriad of outfits but that was actually a big part of what made the original show so iconic, so I totally understand why they went completely overboard with it

I don’t think having a lot disguises is the problem, I feel like they were pointing out how almost every disguise was either revealing, skin tight, or based on a stereotype. It makes sense with the vibe of the movie and the time it was made in, but that doesn’t mean we can’t discuss why it’s not the best costuming.

Sometimes in movies it’s an eye roll moment but with films like this it’s so OBVIOUSLY sexy and like idk, why is that bad? Women are hot 🤷🏻♀️ and as a woman it’s nice to feel that way, n this movie made woman feel like we could be rockstars without guilt and without being pandered to like they do constantly now days
@@megteg Why do women have to wear revealing clothing to be sexy. Men don't have to. Think about that for a second Meg. The only time men wear revealing is when they wear a bathing suite. Nothing is wrong with women being sexy but have you you ever thought why the rarely make revealing clothes for men? Why do women have to sexually objectify themselves for attention?
@@lisah8438 well I would disagree that men wearing revealing clothing isn’t also sexy haha marvel has to have a shirtless scene for every superhero for a reason 😏 and if ur on tik tok for more then like 10 mins you’ll stumble upon thirst traps and find out just how many men get attention for wearing smaller amounts of clothes/sexy clothes whilst doing various activities. Also, I never said women HAVE to wear revealing clothing to be sexy. It’s just one way to be sexy. Probably the most obvious way haha but context is important and in Charlie’s angels I personally think the context makes the sexy outfits work.
The film was produced by Drew Barrymore's production company. The whole thing is an exaggeration/parody of old spy movies so thats why its so dramatic. Also I don't think the outfits are to sexualize them, I believe it added to the parody and empowerment. As cheesy as it is, it pumped me up as a young girl for sure lol! Definitely outdated racially though.
Women wearing scantily clad outfits to do action being held up as sexy badasses is a smokescreen for the fact that putting ladies in practically nothing sells tickets. It doesn't mean it can't be empowering, but that's not really the reason they did it. In the movie industry, it's all about the money. Two things can be true at the same time. I loved TV shows like Xena: Warrior Princess and Charmed growing up, and yes it is nice to feel like it's okay to dress sexy and be respected at the same time. I think a lot of executives like to pretend that's why they did it, but it's really more about business. Hollywood is always conveniently woke when it is lucrative to be so.

@@theoneandonlyCatseye Yeah, I guess its more that I want to think they meant well but that is too much to expect from a big Hollywood production from the 2000s. The little girl in me appreciated the outfits for the reasons I stated though. So you right haha
I actually liked how they hypersexualized the female characters, because the main point of the series/movies is women's ability to use men's blind sexualization of the female body against them. "It takes on average 7 seconds longer for a man to recognize a woman as a threat" was their shtick for the whole franchise, and it really is true. So it gave us a franchise that showed women are, to some degree, WAY better spies than men because we slip under the radar and are incredible at manipulating men by flipping the script while simultaneously looking AMAZING, and often leaving the "victims" utterly clueless and even *happy* that they were scammed/manipulated. Sure, they added a TON of campiness and absurd action sequences for the entertainment portion, because it IS a movie, but I think it was pulled off very well. At the very least it was WAYYYYY better than the garbage remake that came out recently. Also, I'm gonna just say it: *Women are hot.* I, a straight woman, like looking at other hot women. So the franchise was a win-win-win in my book.

Same. As a straight woman I love seeing these ladies strut their stuff. They do it in a way that shows they are SMART, not just things for men to look at and wear as accessories. It’s cool :)

The most controversial thing about this movie is how in that japanese massage scene Lucy Liu oiled up her hands only to massage Tim Curry with her feet. And then she held on to the bar on the ceiling with her oily af hands so as not to slip and fall.

I encourage you to do the sequel - Bernie is a better Bosley, there's more depth to all the main characters and in general I think it does a much better job fleshing out its universe
In my opinion this is the best"Charlie's Angels"movie.It's true that the 2nd has more depth and background stories,but I always enjoy this more in general *and* this Bosley is literally the *only* Bosley who didn't annoy me! I can't stand the one from the 2nd movie and the most recent movie was just an *INSULT* from that point of view,I was so shocked and angry at how it ended!!!🤬🤬🤬

Their marriage lasted about 6 months, probably for the best. I never really got why people thought Green was funny.
@@TheCrayonMaster Tom Greens whole thing was wanting to make the audience cringe and be shocked. While it never made me laugh, it def got a reaction from me and I'm sure that is what Green was always going for. It's pure absurdist , self-humiliating humor but it was also rebellious and unique at the time. And tbh, it had a big impact. Without Green we may have never seen the likes of Jackass, The Eric Andre Show, The Tim and Eric Show, Nathan For You, You Should Leave, etc.

A campy and silly film filled with mindless fun that wraps up in 90 odd minutes. You have an absolute bombshell (Lucy Liu), a child star who survived the perils of show business and emerged triumphant as an adult (Drew Barrymore) , practically the ULTIMATE FEMALE MOVIE STAR of the late 90's/early 00's (Cameron Diaz) leading the film AND kicking ass with multiple character actors (Bill Murray, Tim Curry, Crispin Glover and Sam Rockwell) showing up. What's NOT to love about this film? 😂
They played into the tropes of the show, but they were in on the joke. The hand as an antenna thing is also a joke; have your parents never asked you to help the TV reception by holding the antenna? It sometimes improves when you move the other arm around.
No, because TVs needing antennas to receive tv channels stopped being a thing in the 80s with cable and satellite. Then it completely died out in the 2000’s with the mandated switch to digital and then to HD. It’s like seeing static/white noise or the end of broadcast day playing the anthem in Poltergeist or being pestered by various groups wanting donations in airports in Airplane! Those were all things that existed but no longer do, so younger people don’t have that context, especially since they’re no longer referenced in newer movies or shows.

I always felt like this movie and franchise was aimed at women. At least me and my friends would watch it together all the time when we were teens. We also got the fact that this was obviously a parody of old spy movies so we didn’t take it seriously at all. Plus all the dancing lmao

Mostly exposition.
"So much of this seems to revolve around stereotypes", that's actually why I can live with it in this movie to an extent. The stereotypes and sexualised outfits are largely used to manipulate rude, racist, misogynistic or otherwise problematic male characters, so they are in fact saying how horrible the characters they're manipulating are for having those views. The rest of the time yes they wear beautiful outfits but it is for the joy of the characters and therefore not demeaning them. They're just beautiful women dressed well and as a young woman I appreciated and still do appreciate that. I loved that they were able to dress so well and yet still fight, drive racing cars etc. much like Elle can still practice law in her pink suits in Legally Blonde. Doing their job didn't require sacrificing their individuality or femininity.
OVERJOYED to see this is an utter understatement and don't even care about the sound issues. I absolutely LOVE this film, when I was 5 😂 😂 😂 I rented this from the Nepalese (I'm from Nepal originally) equivalent of a Blockbuster 12 times in a single month till the point where my mother got fed up and demanded my father to get me the DVD so I could own the film for good 🤦♂️ 🤭 😂

I’m with you! It’s one of my go-to movies for feeling better any time. Luckily for me I was old enough to buy it for myself as soon as it came out on DVD. Great parents to do that for you!

I loved it as a kid as well! I wanted to BE Lucy Lu so bad
I LOVED this movie as a young woman, and still do now! I don't find it sexist because the female characters use tropes to their advantage and are always in the power position. And from a woman's perspective, I find it empowering watching women embrace their sexuality and capabilities at the same time :) it doesn't have to be an either-or situation.

hey whoa you know what i just noticed? usually when women fight in movies or tv, they always have them fight other women (like natalie/cameron and vivian) but, while this movie in undeniable tailored to men, lucy liu has that long ass 1 on 1 fight with crispin glover. that's...kinda nice

@@dess234 Jennifer's Body wasn't made for men, though. I think in that interview the screenwriter of the movie, Diablo Cody, made with Megan Fox, she said she wrote it for teenage girls. The movie was always meant for young girls but it was marketed for young men.
@@skadinix it was catered to men which is why it did poorly in the box office when it should’ve been catered more towards women. I know the story wasn’t mean for straight men, but it did poorly in the box office cause Megan was the lead and ofc back then, Megan was seen as the sex symbol in every movie she was in, so they marketed it for men when it should’ve been for women.
@@dess234 the movie itself doesn't cater to young men, though. it was very clearly directed and written in a way that catered to women, and especially LGBTQ+ women. it was the marketing specifically that focused on (straight) young men and teen boys as the target demographic, which is what Alien said. not to mention that Diablo Cody always wanted Megan Fox for the role- that wasn't a decision made by the studio (although the studio definitely took that 'sex symbol' element of Fox's stardom and pushed it to the forefront of their marketing).
No matter how cheesy or how stupid it is, this movie's a classic! And also, it will always be a million times better than the remake. This movie never tried to take itself too seriously, contrary to the new one.

I read RHPS as RHCP (Red Hot Chili Peppers) at first and was just, so confused
I never really saw the over-sexualization in this movie bc it wasn't showing the women off just bc they're the sexy side-piece of the film, they were the strong badass lead characters who were confident and knew how to show that. Also, this movie isn't one to take seriously, the plot and villain motives don't need to be bulletproof in order to enjoy the film, the stars are the angels after all. The guns weren't used by the angels bc Drew Barrymore (she was also a producer on this film) didn't want guns to be romanticized if the good guys used them to fight the bad guys. She basically wanted to send the message that guns aren't something kids should be exposed to as being the 'weapon of choice' like they were constantly being shown at that time. Having no guns also showcased the angel's diverse fighting talents and skill, bc really anyone can hold a gun and press the trigger.
Honestly, I think these movies did very well showing sexy badass strong women. It didn't do much favor to men tho, showing them to be simpletons, easily manipulated by said women xD
That also is what makes the Thin Man so dangerous, he doesn’t use a gun after the initial encounter with the angels and instead relies on his sword

You couldn't tell 11 year-old me that this movie was made for dudes because I absolutely loved it.
The reason why they didn’t use guns is because Drew Barrymore who was a producer doesn’t believe in them and wanted the women to use martial arts. I love the film and, although it is a product of its time; it still works thanks to the chemistry of the cast and the nostalgic costumes, hair changes and music. MC G said he wanted to make each scene look & feel like it could stand on his own, location, color aesthetic, vibe. And, it really does. Twenty years later almost every scene in this film stands out; the Chad boat scene, the disco dream, the fight in the alley, the breaking into the lab, the soul train sequence, the fights in the hideout. Just great.
I adore the hair creep character because he's perfect for this movie, a caricature come to life

🧠Fun fact: the house that Drew Barrymores character comes upon after rolling down the hill is the same house where she filmed ET almost 20 years earlier. There is even a poster for ET on the wall behind the TV the boys are playing games on 😊

Crispin Glover's personality/demeanor just genuinely eccentric and strange but he's actually very sweet and talented (artistically and acting wise) not so much creepy once you listen to him for awhile. He's a favorite of mine 👌
This movie is supreme camp-ness and I love it. The feminist in me can’t even be too mad at the whole sexualization of literally everything, since it was in such a misogonistic (and racist) era. So an action movie with amazing Female leads just makes me happy it exists. Also, Sam Rockwell in those glasses doing a dance while smoking was like a sexual awakening when I was a teen.

I know the sexualisation was a product of its time, but I've always kind of loved how a lot of it is women looking hot and kicking ass at the same time. Instead of women just looking hot for a guy to flirt with or to make fun of. Yes its still sexist, but at least they have other skills beside "looking hot"
The sexualiation in these case was overdone to parody the era the original show came from, to show how ridiculous it was but at the same time to turn that sexist view of the women as weak or less threatening todo there adavantage againt's the enemies, that's why there wasn't ever a male Angel but all women that excell in some fiedl or have a particular set of skills or talents
Also it makes pretty clear that these girls can kick any guys ass, So.
Is this movie good? Questionable. But is it fun? Definitely. Also, it's so interesting y'all say how much this movie was made for men (which, probably true). But in my experience all the people that tend to love or enjoy this movie a lot are women. The sequel as well. It is definitely a product of it's time but it's always a fun, casual watch for me at least.

Same! I love these movies and most of the other women I've talked to do as well. I couldn't quite place it as a kid but now that I'm older I like that they could be extremely sexy and playful while still being very powerful and skilled. It was nice to see that duality showing that they can be both. Now, is it extremely male-gazey? Yeah, big time. But it did something right to be as beloved by women as it is.
@@gleegleek4eva absolutely agree. Also you make a good point about the playfulness. I think a big part of the charm is how much these actresses sold having fun as the characters. It's still very male-gazey but the characters also enjoy every part of their role, whether it's sexy, wacky or serious and the latter is what made them aspirational to me as a kid I may be off but there's this element I don't see a lot anymore in media where women can be sexy and capable but also enjoy every minute of it for their own sake. I feel like a lot of the heroines we get these days are sultry/sexy but the media itself also makes sure to make it clear that they don't enjoy that element of their character and they also have to be very stoic/serious to show how capable they are on top of that. I'm not saying that I dislike those characters but it's like the pendulum has swung so completely away from this to that as if it's progress but it's not really. It's just Hollywood trying to have it's cake and eat it too.
Agree!! The intent was probably dudes but most guys i know don’t like this movie and most girls i know at least hold it dearly from a nostalgic point or downright love it
It’s kind of like Jennifer’s Body. Straight men may watch it once for the beautiful women in it, but it’s core fans are actually women who see it more as empowering and fun. Both films I think are female cult classics
Growing up I always thought it was so cool that these women were not only beautiful but also so freaking badass and smart. Obviously it’s very sexualized but I don’t think it’s demeaning. I see it as empowering. As far as the cultural clothing, no doubt questionable but didn’t seem they were making fun of it. As a Mexican woman I personally wouldn’t be offended if they dressed in our cultural clothing. As long as it makes sense for the story, not ridiculing and no malicious intent.
I won’t say much for the sexualisation because I really can’t say for sure but the cultural stuff? I think we need to start being more clear in our videos that we’re not always offended. In this case it was more just second hand embarrassment. As an Asian man, any time I see Asian appropriation I just kind of cringe. To me it looks kinda sad and awkward 😳 - Sam
@@themoviebudz1988 They were making fun of movies that do this shit seriously. And some of the scenes were taken straight out of the tv show.
Drew Barrymore specifically didn't allow any of the angels to have guns. I think the reason was because she wanted to showcase that you don't need a weapon to fight. And possibly make a statement about gun violence, though im, not 100% sure about that part.
It is corny and cheesy, but I still love it lol. All the women had unique abilities/skills and all fit together. It is way better than the remake.
You guys need to react to Charlie’s angels: full throttle now! It’s got more comedy and innuendos 😂 also can’t go wrong w Bernie Mac rest his soul. also the scene where they’re driving their race cars towards each other I think was supposed to be the game “chicken” which is where you go towards the person and whoever bails first loses or whatever
I love the comments on this video. Sam and Stef, I appreciate that you guys generally have a good mindset when it comes to the sexualization of women in the films you watch and I know the criticism comes from a good place, but you don't need to get upset on our behalf when we're not even upset about it ourselves. This movie had plenty of the ridiculous costumes and scenes that play on female stereotypes, but it was intentional, and in my opinion, well done. Maybe I'm biased because I remember being a kid watching this for the first time and loving how badass all three women were. They weren't helpless damsels in distress being dressed in ultra-revealing outfits, they used that trope as a cover to manipulate situations and complete their missions. You two latching on to the outfits and ridiculous disguises just further proves how effective they were against the men they had to fool and/or fight.
In this particular case there’s also the fact that sometimes I wanna see an action movie without feeling like the movie is going to remind me of boobs every few minutes so I don’t lose interest. I can enjoy a movie about women kicking ass without being sold on sexuality. Do I hear your point for yourself and any other women who felt empowered by this? Sure, absolutely, I applaud it and am happy it managed to spread some good vibes in that way. Funny how you were talking about it being blatantly aimed at men, because most people who seem to have kept a big soft spot for Charlie’s Angels 1 & 2 these days are women (myself included). 😁 It was just fun and camp, and the lasting friendship between the lead actresses make it a lovely nostalgic rewatch. My crush on Drew Barrymore as Dylan was very formative, too.
The villains in these movies will always be iconic to me. From the thin man, to Knox and to Demi Moore lol it's just top notch

Just as information the original Charlie's Angels didn't use guns or firearms because there job was mainly as detectives, so they relied on there wits and smarts and the use of disguises. These films version by Drew Barrymore also had a rule of not using guns, because she wanted them to rely only on there intelligence and martial arts abilities. The latest version although severly critized but some people (i personally liked it) might be more yo to your liking since they don't rely on stereotypes as much, they still use there brains and skills but they do use guns when they need to.
everyone's saying that the hypersexualisation of the angels is the point, like its a parody but they are still over sexualised and it does make me feel a bit uncomfortable
I fucking LOVE this movie! So fun and iconic. Like I love how hyper everything is from the vibrant colors, the fights, humor, outfits going into sexual, etc. Going so far that it's camp. Like I know a lot of lgbt people (mostly queer men) who LOVE these movies.
Lucy Liu is amazing BUT you NEED to see her in Kill Bill absolutely a masterpiece film!

The constant confusion between Chinese and Japanese EVERYTHING is.....................not something I remember but it makes sense somehow, you know? "This whole movie is 'lets just visit ethnic stereotypes'" OOF yeah.
I know we are in a time where things are more feminist then before but this film was produced by drew Barrymore and I think it is obvious that they had an extremely good time doing it even though they wore skimpy outfits. I think people forget that women being feminist doesn’t mean you can’t be sexy and I think they wanted it that way to have fun with it.
Every woman and gay man I know was obsessed with this movie at some point. I think because it's pure camp. Rewatching it now though a lot of the costume changes and plot points absolutely do not hold up. 😅
Fun little fact, the house that Drew Barrymore's character comes up to naked is the same house used in the filming of E.T. which Drew starred in when she was 6. There's a poster from E.T. on the wall, a toy close to the T.V. and the kids are eating Reese's Pieces which were E.T.'s favorite candies.
when i was still in high school four years ago and 18, just starting my senior year, the actor for the creepy thin man (crispin glover) asked me out on a date. he was still in his fifties around that time. guy is pretty weird although i loved his role in this movie, so it’s always a sad time because this was a childhood fave that i’m really happy to see you guys cover.

I Loved this movie growing up. Usually hypersexualized women are seen as ONLY that . But seeing beautiful sexy women who are geniuses and physical phenoms , who kick men’s butts, is AMAZING . Men say they don’t like it because of whatever reason but honestly , i think it’s just that you don’t like to see attractive women be powerful . This movie had action, sex appeal, humor, plot twists , betrayal Etc.

My husband always makes fun of me whenever I suggest watching this because I have a major thing for Crispin Glover in this movie. I know, he's a super creep but that jaw and the outfits and fighting, I'm into it. 😅
The style of the movie with rock action soundtracks and slow motion clips is the hallmark of the early 2000s Director McG. He was very much the symbol of Style over substance.
I remember seeing this movie in theaters, which is odd bc I was like 5 or 6, but it is engrained in my memory. Pretty sure this was a double feature, as in my mom took me to see a movie I wanted and then we snuck into this after the other movie was over.

I know I’m looking at this through rose coloured glasses but I still love this movie despite all its problems…I know parts of it now are questionable but I don’t think any of that is the fault of the actors…the writers are definitely at fault there..Stef’s winning joke is definitely the war cry line…Crispin Glover and Sam Rockwell were two actors that helped define a lot of the 2000’s decade of film and yes Sam’s villain dancing helped launch that trope to what it is today
Crispin Glover actually does have quite the range. I admire his unique style of artistry even if I'm not sure how much I'd get along with the guy. It's totally worth looking up the videos of his Letterman appearance (they were _far_ from simpatico). Also, his album had a music video for the song "Clownly Clown Clown".
Fun fact: Drew Barrymore paid a LOT of money to have the angels not have guns. She wanted them to only need to kick ass with their fists.
I LOVED this movie growing up!!! New viewer here!!! But the amount of videos that i watched before bed for the past week is insane!!! Loving all your content and commentaries are absolutely funny! I think you guys should watch Not Another Teen Movie... it's such a fun and hilarious movie. I think you guys would thoroughly enjoy it!!

You guys should definitely watch Legend (made in 1985) it has Tim Curry star as a giant horned red demon of darkness. (and if you do, I would recommend the american cut simply because the music is 1000% better than the uk cut)

Just found your page, and I'm loving it :) FYI Cheung-Yan Yuen was I believe the martial arts coordinator on this, and he is the younger brother of The Matrix fight master Wo-Ping Yuen. He was probably paying tribute lol Drew Barrymore was also one of the producer's as well.
Honestly the over the top stereotypes and ridiculousness was what made it charming and satirical to the original Angels
