  • The contestant being kicked out of the pageant for being in a porno is actually pretty plausible and I think must have been inspired by a real event. Vanessa Williams was Miss America in 1984 and the first African-American to ever win, but she was pressured to relinquish her title when Penthouse published nude photos of her without her consent. Even though she was the clear victim in the scenario, she was pressured to relinquish her title.

    • In 2016, Miss Great Britain appeared on Love Island, and slept with another contestant (nothing seen on tv, just kissing and them being under the covers). A few days later, the Miss GB committee removed her title, saying it wasn't appropriate for her to have sex on tv. Total crap.

    • @@BlackavarWD Good for you? But that doesn‘t change the fact that the problem wasn‘t her taking nude pictures, it‘s someone spreading them against her will. In the Modeling industry especially, nude pictures are quite common, including artistic nudes (which is very obviously what her nude fotos were meant to be).

    • @@themoviebudz1988 Its even worse than that. The Miss America pageant is from the 50s (I think?) and she was supposed to represent good old fashioned values and all that stuff. She couldn’t be married, she couldn’t have any children as a contestant or a winner. So sensual nude photos was an absolute no no. So it was humiliating when they took her title. But as you might already know, she got her revenge. She became a pop star Andy actress instead and never looked back. Her first hit, The Right Stuff was a banger and everyone LOVED her even more because everyone felt she had been wronged.

  • I think the reason she found it so hard to do her assignment was because she found the situation degrading. Like, yeah it's her job to go undercover, but it must suck if your job involves having to enter a beauty pageant and parade around in swimwear just because you're the only young, attractive woman in your workplace. She clearly doesn't enjoy having to engage in taxing feminine rituals and focusing so much on her looks and being "graceful", etc., either. She def prefers to put the emphasis on her skills rather than on her appearance, and is trying to succeed and be respected in a male-dominated field in which I'm sure women are belittled and subtly harassed all the time. So, while I agree she should still remain professional and get the job done, I think it's okay that she was moody at the same time! Anyway, I enjoyed your reaction. Have you seen The Princess Diaries? Would rec! [Editing to add: or Wild Child! Underrated teen movie]

    @WarmLittleDiamond90@WarmLittleDiamond903 жыл бұрын
    • I appreciate your thoughts and how well you communicated them. I totally agree that she has every right to feel mad about being disrespected in her job. It sucks and shouldn’t be that way. She deserves better. But you can feel angry about how you’re being treated and still do the job. There’s at least one life on the line and that is top priority. To be clear, I was not mad at her, nor do I respect the character less. It’s just a feeling of frustration when the anger is directed at the job and not the people putting her in that position, despite the fact that her feelings are entirely understandable. I also don’t feel like the harassment is subtle at all. It’s pretty blatant and that’s fucked. Yes, have seen the Princess Diaries and Wild Child, they are both on the list 😊 Thanks so much for your feedback and suggestions 🙏 - Sam

  • This is probably a good movie to talk about how the feminine standard for beauty is based on *effort* more than anything else. Like, yes, the supermodel look is unattainable genetically but you're supposed to put a lot of energy into getting as close as possible. You might still get roasted, but no lie, sometimes that's better than outright hatred for looking gender-nonconforming. You gotta research what's fashionable and practice styling techniques and eat the right things that don't make you break out or gain weight. You gotta have enough disposable income to spend on: makeup, brushes and applicators, hot tools for your hair, shapewear to give you the correct silhouette under clothes, hair removal products, skin treatments, hair treatments, hygiene products, and all the professional services for the things you are not skilled enough to do yourself plus transportation and the time this shit takes out of your schedule. Triple the time commitment if you have textured hair, and there are way less drugstore brand complexion products for dark skin which makes getting a color match more expensive. There's a reason "bad and bougie" became a look. If I wasn't trying to keep from writing an essay under every reaction, I could list all of the things that I can tell were done during the 48 hours the professional team had to make Gracie over up to and including cortisone injections to get rid of pimples. Not only is that a thing, that is a thing that Sandra Bullock did for this movie, she talks about it on the commentary track.

  • 22:53 My mum always says (and I have to remind myself of it at least once a week): "Knowledge should make us humble, not arrogant." Fairly good translation or summary of what Shakespeare said: "A fool thinks he is a wise man but a wise man knows himself to be a fool." In any case, I thought the whole point of feminism was to give women the choice - either to enter beauty pageants or to join the FBI. I'm against the politics of beauty pageants but it doesn't mean I'd consider myself justified in mocking women who choose to enter beauty pageants, then I'm still objectifying them like the men I criticise do so I'm therefore no better than them

  • This movie just is a great portrayal that just bc you’ve over come misogynistic stereotypes on an external basis and to be able to “be one of the guys” or at least work well in a industry dominated by men, that there is still lots of internalize misogyny that women have subconsciously been taught through a patriarchal society. Basically learning that these women are intelligent, whole people with value, valueS, stories and experiences. and that liking femininity or identiting with it isn’t wrong or make you stupid. It’s honestly such a good way to say that being strong and carefree “like men” and bashing/hating women isn’t actually rejecting misogyny it’s actually throwing you straight into it.
