Dude absolutely nailed the Truman Show comparison.
Except that the police officer genuinely believes in what he is saying because he doesn’t know another life, and isn’t trying to manipulate Guy.

Its more like star trek next gen.s holodeck aware ai (forgot the name of it) episode. They were playing a Conan Doyle story and one of the "unplayable characters" got aware. Even escaped holodeck if memory serves but not betting on that last one(😅🤷🏻♀️😁)
They even have similar catchphrases that have to do with days. "Don't have a good day, have a great day!" "Good morning, good evening, and good night" (not sure is that one's right, but at least close, might be afternoon)

I watched this at home with my dad. When Chris Evans popped up, I have never heard him laugh so hard. And the Avengers music clip sold the deal. That's a cameo Stan would be proud of.

The premise of sentient NPCs is always a f[bleep]ing dystopia, when you think of it, no matter how much man-candy they coat it with. Most of my inner monologue during the movie was some variation of "creating an entire person with the capacity of independent thought in a fake world they can't escape but have the capacity of knowing their own fakeness, and spreading that capacity, and all this because you couldn't spit it out to the girl you liked - that's pretty fucking cruel."

I tried to tell people that Free Guy was a video game version of the Truman Show...I tried. Thank you, Screen Junkies.
Ehhh. There are some similarities, sure, but the Truman Show was deliberately designed all about a real person and his created life. Free City has a bunch of NPCs who aren't (in the version that people actually play) supposed to have a life, and Guy is supposed to have a very small part in the entertainment.

@@LessPegasus Again, no, it isn't. The Truman Show was all about Truman, and everyone around him was an actor deliberately contributing to the illusion. Free City is far bigger than Guy, and his fellow NPCs are unconsciously living their routines. Those are just two of the big differences here.

When you compared it to “Truman Show” it became painfully clear that most modern movies are very shallow parodies of what real movies used to be. Truman Show is not a perfect movie but has a lot of heart.
Yea I was going to say that. This film is just a parody of the gaming industry from years ago. Most people don't really care about that. The Truman show had a main character that was well developed and you went on the journey with him.

Doing a comparison with "The Truman Show" shows the mastery of its director Peter Weir and its cinematographer Peter Biziou. I now realize a problem I had with "Free Guy": it looks flat. Putting it next to "The Truman Show", you can see the difference. It has more color and depth.
Don't know if any of you know this, but Ryan Reynolds actually personally knows Jackcepticeye and invited him to be on the movie!

the main problem i have with free guy is they said that there isnt a button to kiss people in the game yet she kisses him in the game to solve a problem what did they just change it for convenience or something
It's the power of LOVE i guess. That was one of the few flaws that annoyed me. Which is weird, because it wouldn't have if they hadn't mentioned it was impossible, I wouldn't have cared.
I just got done with this movie and I noticed it too. If she had just asked him to kiss her, it wouldn't have bothered me.
It's very siimple. NPCs exist in the game and so (if they are free and start to develop their own actions) can interact with it in wayas humans can't just do by pressing buttons.

They did a good job with the video game writing side of things, only the occasional "high score" type joke that betrays that the last time the writer played a video game was in 1978. The way the game was presented was also good, it looked like a modern game, not too realistic but also didn't look like it was from 1991.
If only they didn't think video games were exclusive to the most popular Twitch streamers who have no business being in any movie whatsoever. Every time they had them on it was extremely cringeworthy

Exactly what I've been saying all along - it's the Truman show but with computer games. Just like Ready Player One is Charlie and The Chocolate Factory but with computer games.
Ryan is slowly turning into Steven Seagal. He soon will be saying he was called first when Brandon Lee was murdered.
Reynolds was also Pikachu that was omitted in a slew of his previous roles. Plus, the comparison to Carrey in the Truman show is that both Reynolds and Carrey played popular 90s created characters in live action video game roles for competing companies.

I was confused that this Honest Trailer came out an hour earlier (5pm vs the usual 6pm time in the UK) and for a while I started thinking this was a bonus video on a different day. Then I realised USA clocks must have changed this week whereas ours in the UK don’t change for another few weeks.

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dude, I am totally in shock right now 😲. Okay, so I never saw *Free Guy* in theaters. Last week I saw it was on Disney+ and since *Lil Rel* was in it, I watched it. I don't play modern video games and don't get most of the references, but still LOVED this movie! There was something familiar about it that pulled me in; an almost nostalgic magic. I watched it TWICE! And now after watching this brilliant *Honest Trailer,* I understand my love for *Free Guy* is because *it IS basically a remake of my beloved The Truman Show!!!* 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽

I couldn't help but see white Kirito and Asuna in the later half of the movie lol. Also I love how she breaks the games controls to give Guy a kiss ( was stated earlier that there were no options for such inputs, but she did so anyway lol).

I honestly loved the movie and the entire Honest Trailer skit was pretty funny but I swear I am dropping a like on this video for that ending evil laughter alone!
These hit pieces are hilarious. Even when (perhaps especially when) it's a good entertaining movie, like Free Guy. A hit piece on a stinker (like The Last Jedi) is just going after low hanging fruit, which I also enjoy
