As a Gen-X who grew up in the 80s. The McDonald land theme definitely had the same kind of magic as Disney. They had talking hamburgers. Which was just as cool in the pre-internet era as a talking mouse. Ronald was the only clown that wasn't scary. I hated clowns but Ronald was the man. He was a low key super hero who was always saving the Hamburgers from thieves and pirates.
Like the hamburgerler? (Instead of McDonald’s stuff, I grew up on pbs, so “juicy juice”and “where a kid can be a kid” is forever a memory of mine.

My dad used to tell this story of when he would go to McDonalds and get SOOO excited to see Ronald. this was when they would have people dress up as Ronald. He would always run up to him and hug him, and since he would go there so much as a kid, the guy playing Ronald knew his name. He would go around school all the time telling everyone that Ronald McDonald knew HIS name. Kinda cute, really reminds you on Disneyland with all the characters going around

My friend with a special... _fondness_ of clowns made me view clowns as something completely else and singlehandedly removed any discomfort I may have felt with them. I primarily felt uncomfortable because I feared being approached in public and messed around with for fun, but now that I know I'm my own biggest clown, nothing can stop me.

Born in 80. I loved McDonaldland. And since my dad was raising us by himself, we got to go to McDonalds a few times a week. Food sucked, but being able to play was nice. So many memories of friction burns on my legs from sliding down the metal slide 😳

I hadn’t heard about the founder at all when I went to see it. My dad and I went to go see some other movie but it was sold out so we chose another one- the founder- and it was one of the best movies I’ve ever seen! I’ll never forget watching it in the cinema. It’s so different to my usual movie taste but I was just so interested. 10/10.

An indelible memory of mine is from working on a McDonald's commercial in 1979, and seeing Ronald McDonald between scenes slumped in a director's chair with a Heineken and a cigarette.
During three 70s, we kids loved McDonald Land and all the characters. Fun times for sure.

Random thing we tried while on vacation in Las Vegas: Since our hotel was the Red Rock in Summerlin, we tried the McDonald’s that they had nearby. The Ice Cream machine was never broken at all while we were there
Wow. This is super interesting. I've always wondered where their characters came from.
As a kid, I came up with a theory that Ronald Mcdonald and Hamburglar met in a correctional facility. And somehow they got out, or at least intensively planning to. Birdie was their pet bird, who they truly believed can carry messages like a spy, and Grimace is just a figment of Ronald's imagination as he descended into madness. Looking back at it now, that could be some indie slice-of-life webseries.

I work at a McDonald's, and we have the Funko-Pop figurines of Officer Mac, Mayor McCheese and Birdie the Early Bird chilling on display in our kitchen. So really the characters that were blatant rip offs also got McDs merchandize deals as well, lol.

Not only am I getting educated on something I never knew but I get a huge kick out of the opening of the show very funny.
As a 90's baby, I vaguely remember the 80's character decor being phased out in my early years. I never knew about the court case though, makes sense why I was barely aware of that whole creepy lore 😂

I grew up in perto rico and for some reason the island was always a bit behind on the era so i grew up seing these creepy statues of the mayor cheeseburger and the ham-burglar even in 2008. It's weird talking to people my age who never played with a skip-it or saw these statues out side McDonald's but honestly it's for the best, Birdie will forever haunt my dreams.

It seems like the early 70's "McDonaldland" was a failure, so it's hard to view that as a "crime pays" story. Maybe it turned out to be a blessing they got sued, as it allowed them to move away from the "HR PufnStuff" knockoff and to become the kids juggernaut it was from the late 70's (around the time of the premiere of the "Happy Meal") to around the mid to late 2000's.

So weird. I was a child in the 70s and watched a lot of TV. I remember HR Puffinstuff, but not the McDonaldland commercials. It always seemed strange to go to the restaurant and see all the characters and not know anything about them, like I'd missed a movie or something.
