  • Nuclear war is scary... If you're instantly vaporized, you're lucky. If you die from 3rd degree burns, or radiation sickness, you're less lucky... But slowly dying from starvation in a bleak cold world, watching those you know drop dead again and again while you fight to stay alive... That's truly scary.

  • Something I've noticed in the games is that a lot of the greater hot spots, like the Glowing Sea, tend to be around nuclear power plants, rather than just being ground zero for nuclear bombs. Given how common nuclear power sources are in the Fallout universe, it makes sense that meltdowns would be common as well, ranging from power plant sized all the way down to car sized.

    @Kindrick@Kindrick13 күн бұрын
    • They also seem to target Nuclear weapon storage sites, that would have a similar effect since those bombs would not have detonated just been destroyed sending their fuel s radioactive particles into the air.

    • I always assumed that, since they produced more radiation than "normal", that they used a bunch of dirty nukes to create as much radiation as possible. Those types of nukes exist. They are called neutron bombs or ERWs. Depending on how much fissile material was thrown out in the fallout, may take up to 30 years for that stuff to decay to a safe level. Not 200 years. Bombing nuclear power plants seems much more likely the reason for the irradiated earth of Fallout. Supposedly, there were tons of them before the bombs dropped.

      @Dominasty@Dominasty4 күн бұрын
  • this makes sense considering the bombs by vault tec were supposed to be "dirty bombs", not meant to destroy everything but meant to spread as much radiation as possible. Edit: i just realized i wrote this wrong, should've said salted bombs.

    • There was also no evidence in the video that anything "dropped". As noted in the film theory video - all the blasts were much smaller than expected - so more likely "suitcase" bombs or low yield privately made devices including dirty bombs as noted in other comments. If I didn't think it was giving the writers too much credit, I would suspect that his is an easter egg that the show will come back to in future flashbacks - showing how the vault makers actually started the war...

    • @angelramirezgarcia8264 It's all loose canon now but Vault-Tec loosing connection due to work being unfinished/being caught off guard/facilities unexpectedly destroyed/etc was aluded to in FO1 & 2. Either way, they wouldn't have survived the wasteland just 180 days after the bombs fell, even the Overseer mentions that in his logs. Vault 111 staff were disposable, they were only given enough supplies for six months, which by then Vault-Tec was supposed to take over operations remotely.

  • The part about the bombs radiation levels being nearly gone after a week might be true, but in the fallout world nearly everything is nuclear powered (think of all the cars, and nuclear waste you see in the world), so all the radiation could be from everything that was destroyed on the ground from the bombs, making it unsafe because of some sort of miniature nuclear meltdown of each and every nuclear powered object. EDIT: Actually honestly maybe the bombs only had to be that size, it could be cost efficient cause of all the nuclear powered devices that would spew out radiation when destroyed on the ground.

      @GaurdianPrime@GaurdianPrime14 күн бұрын
    • @@GaurdianPrimeThe only radioactive part of nuclear warheads is the uranium/plutonium. The fallout is tiny bits of these elements that failed to atomize. Dirty bombs are more inefficient and convert less of the mass of radioactive atoms to energy, resulting in more particles to spread radiation. Having nuclear warheads explode further up(aka having them airburst) also helps spread radiation more effectively.

      @IndigoSeirra@IndigoSeirra14 күн бұрын

  • I would also include one caveat to the Vaults. As we see when we visit many of the vaults in the games, the Vaults were not necessarily holding their residents for safety reasons. It seems that many of the Vaults were set up as long term social and scientific experiments. Often using the fear of radiation rather than the actuality of it to keep the residents from going outside and ending the experiments.

  • Couple issues. 1) The Nuclear Winter issue? People inside Vaults that didn't open for a decade, or more, would most likely be coming out after the climate has started to re-stabilize. 2) The Deserts? Nuclear Winter would have led to food shortages, which would likely led to desperate and unsustainable farming methods that could have realistically depleted the lands ability to grow ANY form of plant life. Combine those with drought and/or high winds and the now arid land could turn into a Dust Bowl. If the cycle continues long enough... viola, man made desert. 3) The Radiation? What if the reduced blast sizes of the bombs was intentionally designed to specifically avoid consuming all the Plutonium/Uranium in the bombs so that they would spread Fallout designed to NOT decay quickly.

Like... maybe, just maybe, they were there to spark things off and then let the massive retaliation bombs do the major destruction. If they weren't proper military weaponry, that would explain why they were so small, a more limited budget would mean less nuclear material to put into them. So, really, it could be both. The first bombs weren't enough to destroy everything, but the world was then destroyed by larger bombs later.

They didn't actually drop the bombs to destroy the whole thing, they did to sell vaults. They didn't need to destroy everything for that, they only needed to create the fear, and smaller bombs would do just that: destroy enough, but not all just to create fear and sell vaults.

He didn't consider cobalt bombs (they haven't been built ever because they don't have any practical uses for war but are perfect as a doomsday device and we can assume some were developed if they wanted to end the war) Cobalt-60 has a half-life of 5.27 years so it would take like 100 years for the radiation to stop 2. Even if no cobalt bombs would be happening there wouldn't be people that would take care of the nuclear reactors and the bombs could destroy some places where nuclear waste is stored so the humanity would need to stay in bunkers much much longer

    • @@RobocopStealerOfFridges I see what you’re saying, but you’re still comparing very different things. Sonic and FNAF are each essentially an hour and a half long movies. But one has a budget five times the other one. Halo and Fallout are both TV shows with like seven hours per season, but one has a production company that spent twice as much per episode. Also, 343 actually was involved with producing the Halo show. Sonic was pre-Covid19, Halo was split by it, while FNAF and Fallout were filmed after the depths of the pandemic. All of them adapted or changed a pre-existing timeline so you can’t even point to that. And while we are just looking at those four, to get a real grasp and develop a theory that holds up, you would need to also analyze 50+ more theatrical releases and dozens of TV shows, spanning live action and animated, the 1980’s to present, etc. You can’t just say “The fans made this one and that’s why it worked, and the fans didn’t make this one and that’s why it flopped.” And how would you even “prove” who are fans or not? What if the director is a fan but isn’t given free rein by the studio? What if they’re not a fan, but the screenwriter was? Where do you draw the line?

So as soon it was pointed out how small the bombs are, and their clouds also not seeming as high reaching... Would that even happen? The amount of bombs and resulting fires would surely thicken the lower atmosphere with ash and sut, but those particles should drop relatively quickly. (Still devastating, though, in its own right.)

  • *TLDR: Basically the bombs are much smaller than expected, still in line with the lore. you can survive the Fallout Amazon explosion. radiation levels 99% low around 48 hours not hundreds of years to be safe.*

    • Plus, Vault-Tec was planning on at the very least making sure that they'd be the last to survive, so... yeah, why not just increase the radioactive Fallout and decrease the destructive Capabilities? Oh... and let's not forget the Fact that the World was at a brink of Resources, I don't think the Reds could've made them more effective irl without hitting the End of their Resources.

  • 15:42 this is probably because fallout one and two weren’t made by Bethesda only 3,4,76 and the series so we’d probably have to dig into info from those games to see how strong the bombs were in the same “company cannon”
