McDonald’s has been around since the 1940s, and, sure, they’ve always been innovating. From the Big Mac to the Filet-O-Fish to the Shamrock Shake to the recent viral Grimace Shake, the company knows exactly how to market its products. But, now in 2024 McDonalds Corp has decided to start an entirely BRAND NEW fast food chain called CosMc’s. But why, loyal Theorist? Why start a new chain? Well, it’s all in an effort for Ronald McDonald to wage a coffee war against Starbucks and WIN over young consumers.

  • Former McDonald's employee here ( I quit for college). We absolutely HATED the Grimmace shake trend. We had so much supply because people kept ordering it. People were making messes in our lobby. The shake machine nearly completely broke because of it. Adding those shakes onto our list of things to make really ruined serve times.We rejoiced when we finally ran out and the promotion ended.

  • 15:06 the whole automation thing actually is concerning in some ways imo. As someone with food allergies, it makes it more difficult to ask allergy questions, such as what cooking oil a restaurant uses, unless they have a full ingredient list available at the kiosk. (Which I’ve only seen at one specific restaurant off the top of my head)

Mike is the personality of Mal's good twin brother who died in car accident. "Mike" was recreated by his psychiatrist to bring Mike back to life inside Mal's body because their parents loved Mike and were scared of Mal. Mal was locked inside his own mind (that turned into Mike's mind). Chef's food has healing abbilities. He creared this food so he does not have to see other teenagers die.   • I think that part of the reason why McCafe failed to reach expectations is because it failed to separate itself from McDonalds. To me, McCafe was just what they called their coffee menu. In my mind, McCafe similar to the Dollar Menu not really a separate brand but just a "separate" menu, and, following that logic, it would be weird to have a McCafe stand alone restaurant just like it would be weird to have a Dollar Menu stand alone restaurant.

    • It's an open secret that anyone could find if they just do a little digging. Cancelling him would start a new wave of people digging into the rabbit hole through something called the Streisand Effect, where the more you try to hide it on the internet the more people will try and dig it up. And if anything he's just giving them free advertising like the gen z crowd, except instead of TikTok it's right here on KZhead. They have little reason to cancel him.

  • Important to note that McCafe actually started in Australia because big chain coffee stores don't really work here - you can see that from the limited amount of Starbucks around. We have a more specialised coffee culture, so it was built as a way to bridge that gap - but still didn't live up to our local cafes - just became a drive-though option mostly. CosMc's looks really cool, hope it ends up in Aus soon!

  • As someone who worked at smoothie king I remember us being told that it costed about 25 cents to make a Large strawberry smoothie but the smoothies would sell for like 10 bucks. The amount of profit they make for barely anything is astounding.

  • I went from being SUPER hyped to try new drinks with a mascot I remember from old VHS recordings, to being filled with a sense of creeping horror at the implications of AI-run restaurants and the 20% expansion of a company that already owns entirely too much of the surface of this planet. Classic MatPat. I'll miss you, big brother... or rather this episode, Steph and Brett. I'm not sure I can remember another episode off the top of my head that DIDN'T have MatPat listed in the writing credits. GREAT JOB GUYS!!!

    • ai means employees job's will get easier cause they'll only be focused on cooking preprepared food. And then AI will take over that too because it's soul crushing, and hopefully better opportunities arrive for ex employees. Idk robots are doing jobs humans don't want to do, but because of capitalism people still NEED those jobs rn, but I'm trying to be hopeful for the future that better options for minimum wage jobs become available.

    • @@visualsituation It's not going to make anyone's job easier, its just going to remove jobs. They aren't going to have more people making the same amount of food, they'll just not have a cashier on shift. And also people will still need those jobs when they disappear, it's not like overnight all jobs disappear and everyone has all they need and doesn't need to work anymore, It'll be a long and drawn out process leaving most people affected by it in extreme poverty as they lose their jobs and the worst job shortages of history come, maybe at the end some people will get lucky and lose their jobs around about the time that effective measures are taken about the issue, but that will be a very small number of people

  • I love this editing. It's snappy and sharp like 2015-2016 "paper background" theories. I prefer it over the smoother transitions that some of the editors use. They're both good, but this is absolutely my preference

    • As a dollar store employee, who uh, enjoys it… I understand not wanting to be at a place, but its easier to get a new job when you have a job. If you do decide to find another job, internet stranger, keep in mind that if you need immediate income waiting in position might be beneficial while you apply. Maybe stay long enough to leave a good impression. Implying you don’t have something else lined up. Corporate sucks, but may you have a good life internet stranger.

    • The fast food work experience really isn’t bad at all haha. I used to work at Burger King and you can probably learn everything after 2 weeks of being there. You’ll probably make friends there and be with people who make work fun. I’d say the worst part about it is when there’s nothing to do haha. I hate just standing in the kitchen and there’s nothing happening. Might just be Burger King isn’t that popular as mc donalds, but for a part time job I’d recommend at least 6 months of a fast food job and use that time to fund what you really want to do.

  • I’ve worked at a McDonald’s for 3 years and most people had a problem figuring out the kiosk, they would either just leave out of frustration or call over an employee to figure it out. Some out right despise it 😂

Ok, a 90 year old gandma may have problems, but that's why there is always a human order station there as well. The only thing that was not obvious was the plastic table numbers that you had to pick and type in. Especially if the first time you are using the kiosk all numbers were taken.

  • I used to work at McDonald’s and I can attest that they love adding new crazy menu items that make our lives as employees so much worse. We were thrilled when the bakery items were cancelled. Also a little upsetting that we were told to encourage customers to use the kiosks more. I thought it was just to free up some of our time taking orders, but now we know that McDonald’s has been training people

    • Depends if they memorize them. I know Wawa serves a number of mixed drinks, but what happens is when your order comes up to be made the employee gets a recipe to follow to make the thing you ordered. No memorization required, just middle school reading comprehension.

  • i don’t think CosMc will take over Starbucks. The brand Starbucks has already established itself as the general place to go to for coffee. If you ask a person that isn’t much of a coffee connoisseur, but more on just a coffee enjoyer, the first place they will think is Starbucks. Whereas CosMc’s will always be tied to McDonalds. While yes, it might be good, better than Starbucks even, it will always be viewed as “McDonald’s drink place.” Also, as all the other comments, we will miss you MatPat. You’ve been one of the people that impacted my childhood.

  • In Australia, McCafe is still inside the main McDonald's. It's just a different section with the coffee machines and bakery items, and there are separate staff for like the peak times and mostly all day. I have seen more towards dinner time for no designated staff for that section because obviously no one is thinking of getting a cappuccino or a frappe around dinner time. They also have they're own window most of the time in the drive through.

  • I've been to McDonald's in Italy. In a stand-alone building in Rome, the Mccafes have a much larger menu but a separate area to pick up the food from the restaurant. It was confusing at first, but it makes sense if you are looking for a grab and go caffeine/ pastry treat order. Especially in Europe when flaky pastry is part of the breakfast culture. That said: CON no hashbrowns for breakfast in their regular restaurant

  • I’m not gonna lie I am a huge sucker for old McDonald’s. I remember when McDonalds used to look fun and cool and not like an office. So I think it’d actually be awesome if CosMc leaned into that old tacky McDonald’s feeling
