British tennis star Emma Raducanu wins US Open

Emma Raducanu has become the first British woman in 44 years to win a Grand Slam women's singles title.
The 18-year-old overpowered Leylah Fernandez, a 19-year-old from Canada - winning 6-4 6-3 in the US Open final.
It is an extraordinary achievement for Raducanu who didn't drop a set during the entire tournament.

These 2 have got massive futures, I think we'll be seeing both of them a lot. Emma got her automatic qualification and Leylah has been rewarded by earning a seeding position in the Aussie Open.

Regardless of how good this win is this just goes to prove how poor women’s tennis is right now that a so called nobody can win a grand slam tournament like the US Open, it certainly wouldn’t happen in the men’s game
She has played more games than anyone else in the US Open and won it - never been done before!

Leylah is a great tennis prospect. Her game and mentality are superb. Emma won because she hit better. Waiting to see their rivalry in the coming years.
Emma is much taller and Leyla's lack of height is an important disadvantage in tennis. A taller height helps in the serve motion and helps to reach defensive balls because longer arms cover more space. This is easier to observe in men's tennis. There is only one short man in the top 100 among men, Schwartzman.
She did not dominate the score line says very little about the match in this circumstance
@@jameswalker6864 Only 3 inches difference (Emma 5’9” and Leylah 5’6”) so I personally don’t think that impacted their playing. Plus Leylah played other taller players and won, including Sabalenka 6’0” and Osaka 5’11” 😳 Emma just outplayed Leylah.

Amazing achievement , brilliant Emma just brilliant. No player has ever won a slam without loosing a set. Think of all great players down the years and she has done something they never did
Nadal did it last year at Roland Garros. The fifth time.
A few players have done it without losing a set, no qualifier has ever won a grand slam though.

Serena did it in 2014, Nadal last year. Thats just the two I can think of, but I’d bet there’s plenty more. No qualifier has done it till now.

Emma is total class and talent! Was rooting for her through the match. Had knots in my stomach just watching.. Her nerves of steel is commendable.. Really helped her block that bias crowd and not get to her (the crowd was really annoy at times!) so happy for Emma!

One of the best sporting moments I’ve ever witnessed , both girls were amazing but the Brit just about shaded it , it was such a close game . So refreshing to see new faces replacing the old in this sport and both a real credit to the sport and the human race which I can’t really say about some of their predecessors.

@@jameswalker6864 That’s also a great memory! For me comparing two great performances which were very different than my comment…Sharapova turned pro at 14 though. She also dropped several sets during the tournament. Serena was a 2 time winner but didn’t have the record she has now. My comment is that this journey, this tournament, not dropping any sets is nothing I’ve seen before. Truly a spectacular moment.

Trust me she did not know Emma had blood running down her leg she thought she just scraped her knee and who would need a medical timeout for that? Emma did nothing wrong and Fernandez knew that after the match. She did not keep her poise and it cost her.
