    • If I remember correctly, she would look so surprised and astonished after each match she won towards the beginning and the middle of the tournament (don’t know about qualifiers), but then she seemed to get less and less surprised with each win. It was almost scary to watch - in a good way.

  • What sets her game apart? Martina Navratilova said in commentary that she has the best return of serve she's ever seen, excepting only Serena. That means she has chances in almost ever receiving game. Add a solid serve (I think she gave up 9 breaks in 10 matches) and you have an intimidating, demoralising game for any opponent to handle. But that's not all - she has a high tennis IQ and the skills to implement her strategy. I've seen the interviews, and all ten opponents were beating themselves up because they felt that they hadn't played their best. This is because Emma breaks up their normal patterns and won't let them develop any rhythm or momentum. By the end of the match they are bemused and running out of ideas. I'll be disappointed if she doesn't become a dominant #1 with a nice collection of slams by the time she's done. She has the tools.

She has just pulled off one of the biggest feats in sport’s history, she has model looks, poise and carriage, a magnetically bubbly and engaging personality, and great, natural communication skills. She is already a star in China and is fluent in Mandarin which adds tens of millions to her value. A fairy tale, indeed, but one born out of years of dedication, blood, sweat and tears. • She's a fabulous (and very confident and articulate) new talent and I look forward to seeing her battling it out for years to come against the likes of Fernandez and Andreescu but why this obsession with the nationality of tennis players? Arguably Canada, Romania and China can also stake a claim in Raducanu's victory as well as Britain/England. This sort of thing goees back decades; Virginia Wade was born in England but grew up as the daughter of a senior church prelate in apartheid South Africa before moving back to England at age fifteen (hence her South African accent). Most of the top tennis stars often seem to have a very broad international background. And besides, Raducanu's a very privileged young woman whose parents made shed loads of money in the finance industry and money obviously helps massively for success in modern international tournament tennis so to talk of her as some sort of inspirational or motivational icon for most youngsters in Britain is a tad fanciful and unrealistic. It's like saying anybody can become an Olympic showjumping champion if they just put their mind to it. The great thing about Raducanu is that even if she doesn't maintain this remarkable and genuinely praiseworthy success, she could choose to follow Wade's example and get herself a couple of university degrees as well; she's already proving that she's an extremely academically able young woman. I hope she gets some really good protective management to fend off the hoards of merchandising locusts who are no doubt already swarming in her direction.
