The Roman Empire was one of the largest and most influential civilizations that ever existed. But what if somehow in today's current global age, the Empire was recreated to its exact ancient borders? What would the country look like today in the 21st century, and how would it compare to other countries across the world? This video attempts to find out!

One important exception is Israel which was one of the richest areas then and still now.
It’s also funny that Spain and Portugal which the Romans used for mineral resources would be replaced with Iraq and Syria for the same reason in this scenario.

Related to an earlier comment, the modern incarnation of the Roman Empire would control not only the Suez Canal but also Gibraltar, as well as the Turkish straits, and have an access to the Atlantic. The thing you miss when you just add their GDPs together and compare the the USA is that the USA’s GDP comes from the fact it’s united. If the states were independent, all the states economies would collapse. So if the countries united, their economies would grow massively, likely far beyond the USA. For example the EU’s economies would grow if it federalised and shrink if it dissolved.

Well shit then, because i've heard that there are some problems with the Colosseum, after all those latest earthquakes in Italy. I hope that it want fall, because i haven't visited yet and most important, i don't want the world to fall!!!
That's not actually a correct quotation. The original poem refers to the Colossus, not the Colosseum. The Colossus was a massive bronze statue of Nero that stood next to the Colosseum (from where it gets it's name) in Ancient times. It dissapeared at some point in the Early Middle Ages.
marvelfannumber1 How does that make this an incorrect quotation ?
Cedars Because the origional quote does not refer to the Colosseum.
marvelfannumber1 Yes, you are right. The quote was mistranslated to Colosseum. Then instead refer to this quote by Lord Byron: “While stands the Coliseum, Rome shall stand; When falls the Coliseum, Rome shall fall; And when Rome falls-the World.” Also, I really wish that the Colossus of Nero still stood today.

This was awesome, and exactly what I was wondering about when I Googled my question. Thank you!
I think Rome would be the capital. Sure Constantinople was a historic capital, but only of the eastern Roman Empire. Rome is still a very large city, has good infrastructure, and is in the center of the empire. It also has many monuments and symbols of the ancient empire
I think London makes the most sense as the capital. It's politically the strongest city within it's borders.
Johnny Vargas But it's also on the edge of their territory. Military wise, it's smart to have the capital in the middle because if someone wants to attack it they have to cut through HUGE swaths of land to get to it, not to mention the Empire could quickly draw forces to defend it that way. It would also just be a sign of the old glory of Rome, something I personally would gush over.
Their is a couple of things wrong with your post. Rome is about as easy to get too as london is... you just have to cross different bodies of water. just a point you should think of It was easier for the allies to invade Italy from Africa then it was for germany to invade england from france during ww2. the 2nd thing that's wrong with your post is... that it doesn't even matter because no one will attack the new Rome. They have the 2nd strongest military in the world and 4th most nukes with a nuclear triad going for them. the 3rd thing wrong with your post is that when capitals are established they are established because of political reasons not military reasons. No one ever thought hey maybe we shouldn't put our capital here because it could be taken easily.... just look at how easily rome has been conquered by northern invaders in their early days throughout history. Or paris too. Paris was easily sacked by the vikings multiple times.
You think they won't have enemies? Russia is almost guaranteed to hate the new Rome, I doubt China would like it very much and even the US could feel challenged. As for the 3rd thing... Rome was sacked once, ONCE in the BC era, in 390, by the Gauls. It wouldn't be sacked again until 410 AD because ever since the Gauls sacked Rome in 390 BC, the Romans were careful and were very protective of their borders. The reason it was sacked in 410 was because the Western Roman Empire was already crumbling. You clearly haven't done your research if you think Rome was constantly getting raided in its early period. As for the vikings sacking Paris, I wouldn't use the word "multiple", and for the times they did do it, it was because the vikings were actually pretty fucking genius. Their ships were able to just sail down the river straight into Paris, something nobody expected an entire fleet to be capable of. Paris was sacked because the vikings got past their natural defenses, not because their natural defenses were useless. If they were fighting anyone BESIDES vikings, Paris would have remained untouched. Rome is still not a bad place for the capital to be, it could very literally and figuratively be the cultural center of the Empire, with people coming from every corner of the Empire to see the Eternal City itself. It's probably hard to comprehend for us now, but for a large portion of Roman history, the idea of keeping Rome alive and fighting for the glory of Rome was a huge morale boost. It wouldn't be as effective a propaganda, rally and morale sign if they're just gonna be like "oh the capital is in godamn Britain now".
It is generally regarded that the time Constantinople being the capital as a golden age
1:52 Ah yes. The istan empire.
I mean Istanbul was the capital of the Roman Empire longer than Rome itself was. By the time the empire permanently split in half Rome had long since lost its place as a Capitol, with cities like Mediolanum (Milan) being preferred by the emperors.
@@fai-pe7oq Makes no sense either way. Rome is the city which founded the empire and serve as it's capital during it's height.
@@fai-pe7oq that was the Byzantine empire, a completely different thing...the name Rome has been used several times in history as an inspiration for empires, including the holy Roman one, but when I think of Rome the first names that come to my mind are Cesar or Virgil, not Constantine or Charlemagne
@@FedeDiver1 there was never a 'Byzantine' empire. That name was given to the Roman Empire by western historians in and after the 16th century. It's just a term used to differentiate the (Eastern) Roman Empire from the period 476 (or even 395) to 1453 to the one from 27 BC to 395. During its entire lifetime, it was called the Roman Empire by everyone, and its people were Romans, although they were called Greeks by westerners.

Istanbul is better with trade
Although Istanbul (Constantinople) was the capitol of the Byzantine Empire for about a thousand years and lasted much longer, the glorious city of Rome should be the default capitol, it *IS* a modern *Roman* Empire, right? On language, though Latin was the root language for most of Europe's languages, it would certainly be used much less than it would have say, 200-300 years ago when it was used as a universal language among scientists. Finally, although Christianity was the primary and official religion of the late Roman Empire (Vatican City grins smugly), for a modern Roman Empire, having no official or set religion, like the US, would be more practical.

Imagine living in that small piece of Armenia that wasn’t conquered...
Or syria
If you are going to recreate the Roman Empire in modern times, you might as well do it properly :P Capital: Rome Language: Latin Religion: Roman Polytheism Also just as a side note. It's pretty funny that when you look at the rich and poor terretories it has been completely switched around in between Roman times and today. Germany, England and France are rich now, but were poor barbarian mud pools when the Romans conquered it. Iraq and Armenia may be poor now, but back then they held the gates to the east that everyone was after.
Yes the Capital would be Rome, but bringing a dead language as a main language of an empire today is impossible, but the closest language to Latin is Italian so that would be the main language. Also, bringing a polytheist religion as a main religion today would be outrageous, considering that the Vatican city would be part of the Empire, so the main religion would be the catholicism.
TheMBmulti the BC Romans weren’t polytheist. They were monotheist.
Herdan BC Rome’s religion was monotheistic and was as organised as Roman Catholicism if not more. They did have better and more rigid Rites than Catholicism. The Romans were tolerant with other religions but not to a religion as sexually depraved as Mithraism, the Senate officially kicked this cult out twice, around 130 BC and 90BC. And Roman Catholicism being intolerant is a myth, the cathar cult had around 900 temples in Bulgaria by 12th century. Catholicism usually doesn’t give a flying fuck unless they take up arms like the hussites, cathars or land themselves at an Ecumenical Council like Arius did. Majority of the so called religious wars are wars bankers waged with a religion they invented as Europe stopped going to war at the height of the Renaissance. The Roman Cardinal, Mazarin is the one who saw through the madness these bankers plunged Europe into and he’s largely responsible for bringing the Westphalian Treaty into fruition in the 1600s. The Admiralty law signed in this Treaty was so study - much like the Roman Senate - it’s still used as a blueprint for international Admiralty law today. And the BC Romans explicitly refused to get in touch in with the numerous oriental mysteries you mentioned that sprang up post Augustus Rome. Not surprisingly, it mainly sprang up in the Eastern Empire. Mithraism was secretly practiced by Nero ( after Christ birth ) in his pleasure island away from the Senate and the Roman public. This Nero is the lunatic who went to Osentia looking for the “Divine Child” ( Christ ) around 6/7 BC whose birth was expected all throughout the Roman Empire. Christ was born only after Augustus closed the Temple of Janus / YHWH. Btw the Roman YHWH / Janus was quite tame ( but fiercely loyal to Rome ) compared to biblical YHWH because the Romans refused get tamed by him contrary to the rest of YHWH worshippers who bend, bow and holocaust at the behest of their YHWH.
@Herdan I condemn the bad actions of the Catholic Church, but the Muslims in Spain had it coming. They invaded Spain and forced the Spanish to become Muslim. That's what set off the crusades. I'm glad we took back Jerusalem. As for the Germanic tribes, yeah they didn't deserve that, we did the same thing that we were condemning (hypocrites). I live in the US, but my great grandparents were from Ireland. So I'm Catholic, but we don't have a bad taste left in our mouths from Catholicism because it spread peacefully to Ireland. Saint Patrick literally converted all of Ireland, it's crazy. He did so peacefully and within 50 years we stopped worshipping our Celtic gods and goddesses. Catholicism also spread peacefully through the middle east, before Muslims forced us to convert or be killed. So as I said, Arabs in Spain ought to be kicked out, and hated. They invaded Spain and oppressed the spainish for like 700 years. That is the only time I justify the churches bad actions. I wouldn't want Arabic customs in my country when they are dirty pig Invaders. How do you think the Native Americans felt about the English, they have every right to be pissed off. So I'm on Spanish's side and the church for that. Sorry for the stuff my religion did to Central and eastern Europe. But I'm of Irish descent and we mind our own business. Ireland never invaded another country, nor colonize one. (We were colonized) Also, Catholics were persecuted in the Roman empire only until Nero. 300 years of misery for people of my religion. Also Catholics were persecuted in Israel by the Jews for a long time. Well anyway have a great day.
@Herdan Thanks brother

Ethan Koca yeah.

Alibek 123 Yeah's Happy
Alibek 123 They could join up with us (Ireland) and we could annex England from the empire and into the Celtic Union. See how they like it haha.
there's a lot of problems in this analysis. You can't just add up stats from the countries as they are and assume that's how it would be if they united into one country. The economic disparities among the different parts of the empire would not stay the same if they all entered one economy
Some questions I have is 1: How would nations respond to this? 2: How would the nations within the Empire feel about being ruled and having their enemies within the Empire (for example Turkey and Greece)
1: Not Good 2: Not Good
Revolts galore
1 idk 2 hug it out, realize they were both wrong, look foreward to the future, and then I wake up and cry because was all a dream.
Any reuniting empires: “my gdp is huge!” America: *laughs*
when the USD deflates (not IF) to a more realistic value on the global theatre, somewhere between 15% and 35% of your current GDP will be lost. That's based on only the value of the USD. The longer term consequenses would mean you can't import as you do now and need to produce mostly what you need instead of getting it somewhere else. Before that's set up you'll first spiral in a depression that's probably worse than the stock bubble crash of the roaring 20's of the previous century. Given the huge divisions currently in the USA, you'll probably spiral down into a civil war. Probably shorter and less bloody because one side will have all the farms and guns. The country recovering from that, won't have a GDP of 17 trillion, best half of that if not, less. For your sake i hope this chain of events won't come to pass, but it's not impossible.

The fact that this empire would make no sense in the modern day world gave me a stomachache
Everyone complaining about the religion of it but im here like "did he refer to roman empire as "her" in the start"
Sukhri Gill many countries' personification are female. Britannia, Columbia (before uncle Sam became more popular in the 20th century), Motherland, and so on.
The personified god of Rome was Roma. She's a female.
I've never thought about the Roman Empire as female. Empire is a neuter in my language.
warxdrum it's not about the empire itself, but the personification of the country. Like the US is uncle Sam, which is obviously a male. Or the UK is Britannia, which is a feminine name for Britain. Rome's personification is Roma, a female deity in the Roman religion, hence a "she".
warxdrum in Latin it's also neuter (Imperium Romanum) but the capital is feminine (Roma)

I think they would have chosen Rome as their actual capital, simply due to historical reasons.
Divine Right what i didn't know that i though rome was the empire important place since the soldiers u to say for the glory of rome
Divine Right absolutely not, Rome was the most important city in the Empire and in the ancient world. And the emperors usually lived at Rome
No when the Empire split into east and west most of the Western government was based in Mediolanum. And towards the end the Emperors had lost a lot of their power due to corruption and instability.
sm901ftw Italian School doesn't teach us that
The capital was Instanbul from 330 AD to 1453, when the Ottomans conquered it, so it could very well be in Instanbul.
It'd probably split to a Muslim side and a Christian side.
You do realize that it would be a secular country right?
The Real Papa John Yeah but I think the muslim side would probably want to split apart from it and have a caliphate.
What? there haven't been a caliphate in 900 years

+VolvenIV Yes!
Mongol empire was the biggest in history in terms of area
+MrLikon yes they controlled the most land but they definitely didn't control the most infrastructure. It was basically a massive wasteland they controlled
+SwagMaster 530 including China and Persia? Or do they not count because of the Mongol invasions hampering economic output in these areas.
How about the Maurya Empire in India? It was larger, wealthier and more populous than Roman Empire and included almost all of India, all of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan and parts of Iran, China, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Burma.
if I reunited the roman empire today, I would make the spoken language Latin as it was when the original roman empire was around.
Problem is just that the pronunciation of most Latin words are unknown. That is why it is a DEAD LANGUAGE.
Magnus Juul make everyone sacrifice animals to Jupiter lol
+Jakob Pedersen Dead languages can be resurrected. Hebrew is proof. With grammar, spelling, and punctuation already in place from the written record all you have to do is to roughly agree on some pronunciation patterns. It doesn't even matter how you do it. Cesare? Kaiser? Tsar? Pick the initial condition and it will evolve into something natural. If you think Latin is dead, read some Catullus. I am pretty sure anyone can pronounce "Pedicabo ego vos et irrumabo" and be understood by everyone else. Or else!
I would make them English, Japanese, Russian and German (and maybe Spanish).
Yea if he started out and expanded from Italy the way Rome did (without any other countries getting in the way which is impossible like he said) then Rome would be the capital, Italian actually (because he wants a Roman Empire in modern time) would be spoken along with other country's original language, and Christianity would be the religion of Rome but most of the people in Rome would be Islamic... Thats a little more accurate
It will never work today but is is a fascinating concept. What the Roman empire achieved at that time in history was remarkable and it will not be achieved at that magnitud ever again.
could you do an updated version of this video? A LOT have changed since 2016

Betrix5068 As far as I know, in the COMPLETED roman empire, ROME was the capital.
Rodfaj90 No, the capital was changed before the Empire was divided
