  • Technically, the sun has still never set on the Empire. For one hour (12:00-1:00 UTC I believe), the Pitcairn Islands are the only Crown colony which sees sunlight, but with them, the sun is over the Empire at all times.

  • I myself am working on a novel premised on the survival of the empire and its evolution into a federal super state, so I find these videos interesting and good for research. Under such a scenario (of survival not reunification), in calculating total and average imperial GDF, the difficulty is taking into account the cumulative multiplier of political unification. By that I mean the free flow of goods and people across imperial borders, as well as skills and expertise, over a period of decades, in a context of political stability. I assume this would have led to a much higher total and average GDP for the empire than that given here by (presumably) adding together the current GDPs of all 64 countries that would be reunited. The question would be postulating a magnitude for the multiplier.

Also the military might of the empire would probably reduce defense needs for different third world bits that can't really afford it. These factors suggest that the poor economics of the bits and pieces of the Empire are probably overstated somewhat.

Today that term is used as a slur to describe people who want the UK be a separate sovereign nation from the EU, and who wish to curb mass immigration and not get involved with wars that are usually only for the benefit of the US special interest groups.

  • I was going to say: you have to include the American colonies, too. It doesn't matter if the rest of the States would resist or not. This is a hypothetical scenario about the Empire being at its most powerful, and that would include the American colonies, making it the undisputed global superpower. (P.S. Cool video. Thanks.)

    @DavidM_10@DavidM_10 Жыл бұрын
    • The reason the 13 colonies weren’t included is because this is showcasing the British Empire at the height of its power (around 1922), which was centuries after the 13 colonies had declared independence. In other words when the British Empire had control over the 13 colonies they did not have the majority of the land they owned in Africa and Southeast Asia.

But Colonies have mission to possess the region wealthy ressource and makes men power... and sending back all this ressources by low price back to the main land and then used for continuum of the empirer's power. The term colonie is the reason why American fight Brits... Because Americans were tired to work for Brits power and following Brits regulations. Vietnam war is also a fight against french colonialists and american empire. Spanish had done the same in south American and the Africa is a mess because the colonies mindset (one of many reasons). And todays the world goes more on stable table(less competitive at large civilisation scale)... Even if you hear politicians Trump, XI, Poutine speak about wars... They are not willing to go aggressively. There is too much side consequences they know about might been unseen now.

In '82 Britain sent an armada across the Atlantic containing the bulk of British military forces with the sole aim or retaking the colonies. However during the journey and Election was held in Britain and the balance of power shifted, the new government favoured peace over more bloodshed and thus recalled the Armada. In short, one election changed History.

    • Pretty much what Sordxyx said. The scenario states the Empire basically just magically gains all its old territory and the resources/population/military owned by whatever exists there currently. In reality this sort of thing would take decades to even begin, the Empire wouldn't just slap on the annexed nations pre-existing militaries/government structures/etc (way too expensive and inefficient) and nations would be more gradually integrated rather than all at once haphazardly. It certainly wouldn't want to just take on the money sink that is developing half the third world all at once. Once it was set up it could easily be the most powerful state on the planet, but it would take a while and lots of things could easily go wrong, not least the fact that even poor nations these days can effectively wound advanced ones with guerilla warfare thanks to modern warfare.

    • Ry well from the second it changes yes, don't forget that most of the countries that were in the Empire went down hill very quickly afterwards as they replaced those in positions with experience with those who had no experience but were native to the respective lands. Over time with structure imposed and a western level of efficiency gained, the figures would begin to shift in favour of the Empire. With that comes changes to the defence budget as, provided it stayed at the same percentage of GDP rate, it too would rise. The British would be able to take control of issues inside the borders which would lighten the load for the US military and as a pair we'd essentially have the world on absolute lockdown

    • As mentioned in the video, the majority of the United States was not even a colony of British Empire. Spanish Empire would be the biggest, followed by French as the second. Also, there are other countries too that has stepped their feet on the US such as the Netherlands. British people is not even the biggest ethnicity in the US. It comes third after German and Irish.

      @011azr@011azr7 жыл бұрын
    • ***** I don't think most Americans would agree with that. The US is just so ethnically diverse to even agree to be considered one of the British Empire colony. Only about 10% of them has British ancestors and the country is built by immigrants from all over the world. Unlike other British colonies, American independence is not given to them. They fought against the UK because their policies are just stupid and they won eventually with the help of French people. Why the fuck would you ever consider to be a part of their empire ever again? They can be allies, but "reunited"? That's just ridiculous and against what all of their founding fathers fight for.

      @011azr@011azr7 жыл бұрын
    • ***** Are you stupid or something? You explicitly said your agreement with the guy in the main comment, "I wonder why they do not include the United States as part of the British Empire as since we were once a Colony of the British Empire." by saying "True". Yeah, American share many common cultures with British people, just as they share common cultures with French, German, Irish, Dutch, and other people from other European countries. Also, what is your point exactly if you don't say that the US should be a part of British Empire? Like, what the fuck do you want to point out? Even if the US will be one of the British Empire, American's massive ego and narcissism won't let them to be under the rule of the British Empire. If anything, the US would be the one who rule and control everyone else in the empire, since the US whole GDP is bigger than the entire British Empire's GDP. Furthermore, why would the US want to invade the British Empire in the first place? It's not like they have much oil that they need to be invaded with all of the mighty freedom and democracy.

    • Taking a hypothetical discussion a bit to serious and personal. Our Nation Originated from the Original 13. So I figure we hold the same connections as the 13. Not who came here after the fact. People give our so called founding father way to much credit like they were flawless saints or something.

      @Knox122771@Knox1227717 жыл бұрын
    • Christopher Knox Just replying to the original comment, it would not be logical to include the entire US because the original 13 where the only colonies Britain ever controlled, after the revolutionary war Britain never controlled The US again, so it wouldn't make sense to say that any part of the US besides the 13 states that where the original 13 colonies should be included in the British empire

      @Thehazardcat@Thehazardcat7 жыл бұрын
    • how so? Canada, SA, and Aus were still under full or partial British control until well into the 20th century. Canada only got full control of it's self in 1982 Australia wasn't fully independent until 1986 South Africa became independent of Britain in 1931 (you're probably thinking of the formation of the local governments in these countries.. for instance Canada got home rule in 1867.. but Britain still had to approve all their laws, could call upon them at any time, and could pass laws for them. IE they were still within the British Empire)

      @Gorilder@Gorilder7 жыл бұрын
    • Sidhant Sinha they ask that question cause the US is a country that could fight them for that territory and probably win. And of course the US would say no not only cause of the economic strategy, but also cause of the Constitution that legally binds all the states together. If the states that made up the 13 colonies left the US, they would essentially be calling treason.

    • @Olivia Addison so how indian subcontinent's countries became more poor that many of the african countries after independence and also african countries who possess more than 30% of the entire world's economy became one of the most poor region in the world. You would probably say that thay hadn't industrialized their nation during the period of industrialization but thay were ruled by British during that period. So it was the duty of british that they think about the indian and african nation asuch as they think of their own nation . They just thrieve resources and wealth of indian and african nations and used it to industrialize their own country. I don't know enough about the how british rule the other countries but yes i know enough about the rule of british in india. Some major famines like 'Great Bengal Famine', 'Chalisa famine', 'Doji bara famine','Upper Doab famine of 1860-61','Orissa famine of 1866','Rajputana famine of 1869','Bihar famine of 1873-74','Indian famine of 1896-97','Bengal famine of 1943', all cause during british period. Can you think about famine in the world's most fertile region i.e. plains of indus and ganga? The cause of these famines are taking around 125% tax on crops. The farmers are forced to pay this tax. When they were unable to pay this then the british seize their house ,property,and crops leaving the farmers and their families to die. Also they massacred many people who were unviolently protesting against the british rule . Example of some massacre are jalianwalah bagh massacre ,amritsar massacre etc. And now England's government claim that british raj was the golden era for technology. You claim this because you have given railways tp us. But we don't need this railway if it costs 45 trillion $. Yes $45 trillion , this is the amount british thrieve from india. I'm not saying that you are bad but yea your ancestors were like a devil for us. Even till date they haven't even said sorry for these all. Now, you decide everything.
