08:36 Conclusion Gabriel Gives Back Love In BIG way
Remember, Gabriel is a captive but non-releasable breeding cheetah at this rewilding project called Running Wild Conservation. I have the privilege of knowing Gabriel and enriching his life, while he enriches mine throughout his life. He's still in great shape and condition at 10 years. I pray for another healthy 10 more.
I've known Gabriel for 10 years, and what a blessing and challenge it's been being his friend. He chose me long ago for friendship as a cub and never forgot. We've both had to learn each other's tolerances. I have more of course and just happy to be his friend, so I had to learn what he likes and dislikes. It's difficult as we don't share the same language, not even body ones, but I've learned.
I show some of the quirks about Gabriel and how he communicates them to me. I need to become a better observer of behavior to understand him. Species all have similar behaviors, like whining, growling, position of body parts, like ears, tail, shoulders and such, but every individual in is unique in how they personalize their common behaviors. Gabriel is no different.
From the paws in my face to Gabriel's love of the Play Fight, I've learned what mostly makes him tick. It has helped me bond with him, and he shows the appreciation in his loving grooming, purring response to me. When he's REALLY happy with our relationship... he does this HUGE RUB I really like. It's at the end of this video.
Thanks for watching!

  • My 10-year relationship with Gabriel in 10 minutes. He shows the appreciation of my efforts to understand him with a HUGE hug. Remember, Gabriel is a non-releasable captive breeding cheetah (due to congenital handicaps), so it's my duty to grant him and all my cheetahs the best life possible under my care.

    • Earning the trust of large and dangerous animals has always been so impressive to me. It's true trust. They could hurt you at any moment if they felt threatened, so to have one be knowingly gentle as to not hurt you, and seek out your companionship is incredibly impressive. I think of horses as they are the largest animals I have worked with. One kick or bite from a large horse can be devestating, yet I have gotten wild horses to allow me to groom them, pick up their feet, pet their noses and handfeed them. Being gentle, understanding, and patient with animals is incredibly rewarding.

  • A cat rubbing heads with you is just the sweetest thing in the world. Housecat, cheetah, lion, all the same 😁 Too bad human skin is too flimsy and delicate to play with non-retractable claws. I think every cat owner knows how sharp their cat claws are from the times they sometimes forget to retract them or actually use them to climb up your leg...

    @TimbavatiLion@TimbavatiLion5 ай бұрын
    • yeah, love the rubs... If Gabriel could retract fully his claws, it would be easier playing with him. Cheetahs claws always stick out half way so they can grip the ground and run, turn, and accelerate faster.

    • I wonder if female chetahs have the same degree of wanting to play-fight... The way I'm imagining this is how we all like to be active like that when we're young males. I mean I used to want to wrestle all the time as a kid. So it makes sense. You just can't easily play with somone when they have knives all over their body! I would say to put on a suit so the two could wrestle, but that would prob give Gabe a bad precedent for interaction.

  • Dolph - Thank you for doing your best to make Gabriel happy. It’s hard to accept that you can’t make Gabriel’s life perfect, but the more love and attention you give him, the happier he is. I like your philosophy: give the animals all the love and positive attention you can. I think Gabriel understands (on some level) that he can’t play with you like he would like to, but he clearly REALLY enjoys your company. I think you said “grooming” instead of “petting”, which I think is a better word because I bet that’s how Gabriel sees it.

  • So cute how that loud purr started coming out when Dolph spoke. He def loves you! I woner why big cats never have their tails up like house cats do when they're pleased to interact with you. From where did house cats acquire the tail-up thing? Also, does Gabriel do any hunting at all (as a non-releasable captive)?

    @luceatlux7087@luceatlux70875 ай бұрын
    • Yes... I hear Gabriel purring about 40 yards away. And no, they don't lift tail like house cats. I've seen leopards love on you and brush their tail on you as they walk by. But a cheetahs tail ALWAYS twitches like house cats and I suppose there is some emotional signal in all of it!! :) Cheetahs tails are long and rudder shaped and used to help steer their bodies when running high speeds.

Right so its facepaw of playfullness, that unfortunatley dose risk inadvertidly nicking the skin a bit. on one hand very friendly loving gestrure on other paw slightly risky for the fur-less face haver. It is aggression toward all male cheetah (and as we've seen with females too)? Aww that dose complicate finding him any other social circle buddy or partner. Sad but i guess i can understand that. I do hope he dose find a good cheetah buddy eventually he is an excellent video ambassador for his kin and just deserves to have good friends.

    • That would be great... thanks for thinking of him. We have a zip line, but surprisingly some cheetahs don't fall for it and won't chase. Gabriel is one of those laid back cheetahs that does not chase things anymore. I can get him to chase me if I run past him but then catches me pretty quick. The staff has stated harnessing Gabriel for the 1st time in years... he allows it and now gets walks around the farm and into the game reserve. Hopefully he can be trained OFF lead and come back when called or tires. The reserve is sealed but 800 acres. We need hum back to his enclosure for his safety and others. He can't hunt. Won't and too used to getting food in a bowl. That is the incentive to get him back if we ever let him loose off lead and get him to follow us.

    • Yeah... I wanted to show some behavior as it is and not sugar coat it. I've had lots of videos that are very adorable but folks should understand these are still wild and can be dangerous. This project has a purpose to breed and rewild cheetahs, and I like showing their true nature, good and scary. Not bad, as a wild animal cannot be bad. It is they way they are. When cheetahs get much older, and their testosterone levels drop, they do mello. The females too with lesser estrogen levels.

    • @@CheetahWhisperer Thank you for your answer. As for company, he cannot stay with the second female on a day-to-day basis?

      @jbmaru@jbmaru5 ай бұрын
    • @@jbmaru It's difficult introducing a female or male cheetah to another without either harassment to breed or attacking. Cheetahs have died doing it. Take for instance in India, they were not aware and let a female into a male coalition pen, and they attacked her which led to her death. Female cheetahs are solitary by nature and only visit males when in heat (in nature). You can have siblings of different genders raised up together, and they tend to be ok for life, but then the female won't want to breed in most cases. Keeping females and males separate it the best policy for a breeding center. Another male cheetah friend is the only viable answer for Gabriel. He had one friend who left the project long ago. I did not own him, but they were not aggressive to one another. But it's very risky, and you can't always be there if a fight breaks out. Then it's too late and serious injury and deaths occur. Another project tried introducing a teenage male to some male adult cheetahs and they killed him.

    @Jak.Jak.@Jak.Jak.5 ай бұрын
    • Thx for the question. I always shower up and use most non scented soap possible. For several reasons. Keep things clean for the cheetahs, keep down the scents and chemicals in the soaps, and to have my smell more like me than soaps. And yes, then I wash up face and arms where I've touched them or they've licked me to keep diseases from mixing between animals, in case they have something unseen. I don't even let the dogs touch me before I head out, even though they push themselves on me to greet. Sorry dogs! When I get back.

    @grahamstrouse1165@grahamstrouse11654 ай бұрын
    • No. It's best for single cheetahs that are male. But at a breeding / rewiling project there might be health and hormonal issues that cause problems. If you do mix them together, it should happen as cubs and pups so they are friends from the beginning. This may work for zoos.

  • Could he not have a beautiful, sexy female cheetah friend?

    @TheBaconWizard@TheBaconWizard5 ай бұрын
    • Interestingly... Gabriel DID have a female companion living with him long ago. She died of renal failure, but they had to be separated long before that due to maturity and Gabriel harassing her. Male cheetahs live by themselves or with other male cheetahs (brothers mostly), unless they have sisters. They don't typically like new members of their coalition, but sometimes in the wild they do allow it. In the wild, even sisters separate from them. In captivity, you CAN have a sister and brother stay together for years without trouble. But that always begins when cubs together. Introducing a female later on is dangerous and one could be killed. I've heard of both male and female cheetahs dying from fights when introduced and left alone. It's really risky. I don't want any dog with Gabriel. Not natural and could cause disease harm.

      @CheetahWhisperer@CheetahWhisperer5 ай бұрын
  • Why not get a female playmate?

    @ayasha89games66@ayasha89games664 ай бұрын
    • Cheetahs can live with their sisters if they grew up as cubs and not be interested in them sexually. Pairing a unknown female is very dangerous. Cheetah males don't live with other females in the wild, only males. A rare instance happens when a sister is part of a coalition of males but then leaves when matute to live put her solitary life. Male cheetahs will either attack, test her for breeding receptivness,or harass her to mate that the female dies from exhaustion if it can't get away. In captive world, the male will try and mate when she's not ready and cause fights. But she can't run away. There are certainly exceptions to the rule but it's just too dangerous. Cheetahs are so rare their lives cannot be experimented with. In India this year, their breeding/rewilding efforts lost a female when they brought her into a males cheetah camp. She was not in heat and was killed by them. I don't want a dog in there either. Needs to be natural, like another male cheetah. It's so iffy how it will go introducing a female to live with and maybe later they fight and one gets seriously injured or dies. Aldo, if a female cheetah lives with another female or male, she is less likely to get hormonal for breeding, which is the reason for this project.

      @CheetahWhisperer@CheetahWhisperer4 ай бұрын
  • Why is Gabriel aggressive towards other male cheetahs? He obviously see's u as a coalition member.

    @msanjelia@msanjelia5 ай бұрын
    • Aggression to other male cheetahs is very natural. In the wild coalitions of cheetahs via for control of essential territory and just like lions or leopards, they will fight each other' to keep the best territory. It is instinctual. Cheetahs have died in captivity and in the wild when coalitions of non-related cheetahs meet each other. The female cheetahs are WAY more tolerant of each other. These coalitions are usually made up of brothers, and they live together for life. Sometimes they allow a stranger to join as it benefits them or a sister (who eventually leaves for a solitary life on her own to mate and raise cubs). Most times they battle other males and will kill. That is why Gabriel is like this and most all other captive male cheetahs that are not related or grown up together. It can happen that a non-related captive male cheetah can get along with another, but not common. It takes time and the right personality of a cheetah to get along. But, then you really can't know for sure even months or years together.
