08:30 Conclusion - I am Gabriel's favorite enrichment
Ever since Gabriel has matured from his cub and teenaged years, he's mellowed and changed what enriches his life. In this order it is Females, Food then Friends. Gabriel is a non releasable breeder at this Cheetah Breeding Center called Running Wild Conservation. Abi and her two cubs Kimi and Kayzer are there as well. I show how cubs are easily entertained but adults are much harder. They all seem to enjoy chasing things, but Gabriel is limited in that respect. I can get him to chase me or he sometimes chases other cheetahs along the fence.
I build a LARGE cheetah box to see if cheetahs enjoy boxes. Abi and Gabriel had zero interest in it. I try hard to enrich the lives of my captive cheetahs and go all out. The key is finding what stimulates them and positively and safely work around those things.
Ultimately, I have to admit it is ME that enriches Gabriel's life the most as he explains over and over after I bring his something to enrich is life, he always turns back to me. Grooming his friend is one of his top pleasurable experiences Gabriel enjoys. He'll roll his eyes back while doing it. So that is what we do most together. He likes play fighting too and I allow that limitedly because I don't want to get injured.
Thanks for watching!

It's just amazing how much Gabriel loves you Dolph. His purr is so soothing.
Luv Gabe and his purrs. Need to do a No Comment purr video of him. Problem is he interrupts his purring if not thinking about me or while licking.
I try hard enriching the animals in my captive care, but sometimes it's ME they want and not some inanimate object, especially Gabriel whom I've been his best friend for over 9 years.
What do zoo's do? Quality zoo's is what I mean. The cheetahs at the Cincinnati zoo seem to be enriched....
@@american_woman Zoos often place dogs with single cheetahs for play and companionship, but it has to be done early. It's better if Gabriel had a brother to live with or a coalition brother from another mother but that never happened. He is very aggressive toward most male cheetahs. Also the zip lines are good. We have one but Gabriel is not much of a chaser. Kimi the cub loves it. I plan on recording and showing it.
@@ConsciousOne369 Yes I have seen that channel. I'd love to see Gerda in a breeding program. She seems a viable female and cheetahs need all the help they can get in numbers. Only 7000 left.
@@CheetahWhispererhopefully, I’m not sure how that Cheetah survived the winter to be honest 🫣
@@CheetahWhisperer 😍 I love that idea!! How many programs like Running Wild are there in South Africa? CCF, Ashia, I think Anne van Dyke renamed there's? I see a lot of posts about cheetahs in various zoos across USA, UK, even Australia has been breeding a few, I'm curious as to how many individuals there are in reserves and breeding programs. 💚 We need a big cat park in W Aus, no cheetahs in our zoo's here ATM. 😖
Such a cat thing. "They might like this?" "OMG I LOVE IT ok I'm bored now, get it away from me." 😆💚
Cats are FUNNY! The box was in Gabe's way!
Lol! Yup, that's cats for ya! I saw your "name" & was like, I Should have picked that one! I take care of Many feral cat colonies in my community, spay/neutering, feeding/watering, providing housing, Vet care when needed, & rescuing/rehabilitating/adopting out as many of them that are able to be rehomed. Sadly, dumps of domestic's happen all too often. It's an epidemic CAUSED by humans!
@@CheetahWhisperer Rub some catnip all over the box. Could Gab's scelleton issues be causing him pain, & that's why he's not as active? I have seen an instrument (not sure what it's called) used on domestic cats, that gives them like a "chiropractor adjustment" , it's very gentle. Maybe you could find someone to assess him, & give from treatments, if deemed necessary.
@@CherylBerryl people are shit, lucky there's more kind people like yourself and Dolph around 💚
@@CherylBerryl Na, no pain or discomfort, but it is a weak point and having to live on his own in the wild, darting back and forth, sharp turns... it's likely to blow it out. So he'll never be released. He's too old now anyway at 9. Already twice the age of average adult that survived cubhood in the wild. You see him in most of my videos, he shows no discomfort at all, rolls around, gets up, paces about, and runs OK. It was my question too when I 1st saw it.
Oh, that purr! No matter their size, it's the most soothing sound in the world to me. It's their expression of love, contentment, and happiness. Thank you for sharing these moments with us!
Couldn't agree more!
What a big cutie.. I wouldn't be able to resist hugging him.
He is VERY cute and affectionate. Loves to love.

Good Boy!
@@CheetahWhisperer We love the purr machine :D he so happy
Cheetahs are my absolute favorite big cat! Thank you for taking care of them and helping to make sure they never go extinct.
Welcome and my Fav cat as well.
My cat also is very hard to find toys she like, the laser pointer gets her attention for maybe 20 s. The only toy she doesn't really get tired of is a string she'll chase when we run around with it 😁 Ps. I'm very impressed you still have hair with all the aggressive grooming from the cheetahs 😆
HAH!! Not just Gabriel. He is so mature. I have not shown much of his behavior regarding toys because he ends up just humping them! Yes... humping, even that rope. He is very mature and wants to breed. I hope Abi and him can breed this year or next once she has left her cubs at full maturity. I grew the beard so I am protected against the scraping! Thx for watching and commenting!
@@CheetahWhisperer It would be nice for Gabriel to breed since he doesn't prey or hunt.
@Mo A I know. But all Gabriel's cubs would have to be fed by people rest of their lives if his cubs were like him and doesn't believe in killing... 😉
@@CheetahWhisperer Boy...that's a dilemma. You mean Gabriel was born that way? I thought it was an injury.

Gabriel has high standards, maybe try getting him a rubix cube or something 😅
Sophisticated cheetah...😎

I know! You wouldn't think anything would bother him, how calm he is most times. But he gets afraid of noises and hates most male cheetahs. Thx for watching.
@@CheetahWhisperer The thanks goes to you for your content and showing the world these great animals! Keep it up!
Gabriel acts like my house cat he looks at the toys I have for him and is like what are you doing 😂
It's really funny! Think they would just love it... but not some.
My cat who just passed away never had much interest in toys either she was very much her humans cat.. she was incredibly happy and loved and purred constantly but her enrichment came with just being with me and that always made me feel even more special
That is Gabriel.
"My goal is to release some of them" *Me, picking up every single cheetah* "no!!!!!"
Wish I was selfish enough to keep them all... but we need more breeding cheetahs out there. 🐆
Gabriel chewing the ear had me in tears
HA, It used to be my fingers and nose for years and about two years ago he discovered my ears. Another female discovered the hair on my eyebrows and would nibble it! Eden. She is passed now.
Gabriel is so stunningly handsome!! He's my favorite in your videos! The mutual bond of respect and love between you both is incredible!! And I absolutely adore his loud purring!! ❤🐆❤ You are so lucky to be able to hang out with him like that!! Would love to come to the running wild conservation someday and help! 👍❤😁😻

I think so too. It's a wonder to have Gabriel as a friend.
"Whats in da Booox?" Welp, not a cheeta, thats for sure...
Empty... THx for the comment.
No matter how many of your videos I watch, I'm always awestruck by how friendly, almost tame, these cheetahs are - with you at least. I used to dream, as a child, of having a "pet" cheetah and here you are, living my dream... You lucky [expletive deleted] (I'm not jealous... honest 😂) It makes me happy to see Abi, Kimi and Kayser doing well. Gabriel's purring is so soothing and yet terrifying at the same time - like a regular kitty-cat dialled up to 100. Hopefully you can find something to keep him entertained before you need new skin 😂😂 *Thank you for you dedication in preventing these beautiful animals from going extinct!*
Yeah... most are quite nice. Cheetahs are non aggressive by nature. Still can get mean sometimes and treat you like another cheetah and you might get scratched, cut, or even bitten. It happens at projects like this. Gabe even bit someone LONG ago on the ankle. Always beware.
@@CheetahWhisperer How bad was the bite? I'm kind of curious😅 how bad a serious cheetah bite would be to a person's arms or legs
With all predators and even us and probably more species, we can control our levels of bite to various degrees. From pacifying, love bites, nibbles, feeling with teeth, mating bites, possession over food bites, eating bites, angry bites to the DEATH bite which is the hardest. I think Gabriel used the mating restraint bite on a staff member ankle long ago, but I didn't see the act, only the aftermath. Hole scars could be seen. A cheetah can bite about as hard as a large bitbull, about (+-)400PSI.
So fluffy so gentle
They get fluffier in the winter when their undercoat comes out!
Given how house cats love privacy they love for cardboard boxes may be more due to its sheltering nature than material? And bessides Gabe's favorite human lollipop is right there there are priorities .) Like in many social creatures the grooming should be combination of social activity and keeping each other's coats clean epsecialy in places the cat itself would not reach. Gabriel is excellent abassador for cheetahkind, purrs and loves being near his human so much that its easier to explain things bout him and his kin for those of us who do not have skills and ability to go off to tend to these majestic beings.
Maybe. Smaller cats like hiding. Cheetahs love horizon views for danger and prey.
Gabriel is like his name sake a very well behaved angel
An angel. Very adorable.
I'm glad Gabriel has a friend like you to look out for him. Also Gabriel is just beauriful. To me it doesn't matter that he has a deformity with his spine. I just see how sweet and how gentle he is towards you. I can tell just from his purring that you make him happy and when he's grooming you he's telling you in his own way that he loves you very much.
I know. Luv em so much. I just wish cheetahs lived as long as lions and leopards. It's not fair. Want him around for decades. He's 10 now. Will be lucky to reach 20. More like dog years for them even in captivity.
I hope that malformation does not give him pain, that bump on his back I think. And it is probably a reason he cannot run like a "regular" cheetah. That purr is awesome
He can run but doesn't much by choice. There seems to be zero discomfort. He rolls around on his back over rocks and twists and turns and grooms legs and anything you'd expect from a cheetah.
_"Maturity sets in and there's a limit to the things that entertain them."_ Oh, so just like humans.
Yep... we are all really alike.
Wow! What a picture you click
Thx! And thx for watching one of my Shorts!
Just a suggestion, if you haven't already tried it: Gabriel might like meerkats (think Kenji). These cheetah's indifference to the boxes surprise me - I've seen so many videos of leopards, tigers, and lions delightfully mauling boxes that I assumed cheetahs would do the same. Gabriel is looking very fit, as are the two cubs - good on you all for taking such good care of them.
He loves meerkats. Problem is, they HATE him.. He leans against their fence and purrs as they frantically scratch at him through the fence.
Great suggestion! But yeah the meerkat would not like him unless they grew up with him.
I have a cat like Gabe. She doesn't even care about treats or catnip, let alone toys. She pretty much just wants to hang out with me all the time.
That's Gabriel...
BABY GABRIEL! What a happy unexpected surprise!
Gabe was cute and loving as a cub too. But also quite rambunctious.
All cheetahs need is a friend they're so wholesome
Yes... Cheetah males like friends. it is natural for them. Females are solitary in the wild unless having cubs which they leave once close to maturity and can hunt on their own. Males form coalitions of other males to hunt, live, and protect territory together and die.
Maybe Gabriel would like a cat tunnel. Or one of those tumblers with biscuits in it. My cat isn't that much into toys, but she loves boxes, tunnels, puzzles with treats in them and catnip.
Thx for the tips!
I wonder if Gabriel is in physical pain. Thank you for being such a wonderful steward of these glorious animals.
Not at all. He lives daily without any evidence of it. Rolls around on rocks and ground, plays, runs, swats like a cat and sleeps and rests well. There just no evidence of it. Eyes don't squint, purrs, no motion inpedemce at all... so answer is no. Which is good.
So glad to watch Abi and her precious cubs playing growing so quickly 🙂 And thanks for update of Gab such a great Friend. Wish he will find his queen soon 💖
Thx. And wish Gabriel the best. He's looking good and happy.

Hello!
@@CheetahWhisperer Hello too Dolph 🥰
I know this is an older video but maybe something with 3 or 2 scent he’s familiar with and one scent he’s never smelled before like I don’t know hot dogs or something that either you can just bring in and have him just smell it or you can hide it around his enclosure whatever is more comfortable for him. I just suggested since you mentioned, he like smelling things a lot and seems to enjoy doing that
He loves scent enrichments. Gets all slobbery over them and makes that funny face. I'll try more scent enrichment with him. We often wipe fellmale rear ends and test eatrus levels using cheetahs for breeding. Gabe also likes shed cheetah fur from other cheetahs, even from one's he hates because he doesn't t have to fight them and gets to identify them.
we have already released two generations of cheetahs 😁😊.

Love cheetahs. This is in South Africa where you can volunteer at www.runningwildconservation.org. But many zoos who have cheetahs often take them on harness walks in the park for visitors to see but not touch.
Hey Dolph, glad to see you're still doing well :)
Well thanks and glad you are too and join in the vids and conversation here.
Try a deep box and not much bigger than Gabriel. Maybe with a hole to cilme into .
Cool!
So cute he loves her scent. What a smile. If the box had girl smell?
Ohh male predators love the scent of their gender counterparts. Cheetahs will call and chirp for days without sleep or food hoping to see and visit a female in heat. Cheetahs also pick out their favorites and become obsessed with them in and out of heat.
Your videos are informative and heartwarming. I love Gabriel and his purr! I've always wanted to work w big cats, fam discouraged it, but not doing so left a huge hole in my heart. Maybe it's not too late❤

I would love to know a normal day is for you ? I know just being able to work with animals is gratifying enough! Gab as usual looks amazing! How often do you see all the Cheetahs 🐆? Dawn
I know. I have a career outside these cheetahs and nearly impossible to record and post regularly. One day I may have my own cheetah/rewild project and not have to borrow space from another. THEN I can truly be released in filming and showing the world the life and husbandry of captive cheetahs and the rewilding process.
Gab has to be accepted as he is but continue to try things that’s the best you can do my cats loves tunnels! not boxes. I would have some three sided tunnels made up for him and the others! Tunnels you can play hide with him hide things in them a little more interesting then boxes!

Thank you new subscriber sorry BIG CAT is disappointed by toys and pushes for the truth naturally , how are the teeth nonl sore tooth 🦷? Could be exciting to redesign the land , currently the BIG CAT is only going along to get along .
Gabriel needs another cheetah to show him how to play.
YES... Gabe only had 3 female cubs his same age growing up. He might have a new friend named Wesley, a wild cheetah that lives next door that he seems to play with a like along the fenceline sometimes. The only male he does not fight because Wesley does not fight back.
Gabriel sounds like my house cat gunner hed rather cuddle up with a human then play with toys.
That's cool he likes me. I prefer if Gabriel would be entertained by other things. He does like to look and listen for cheetahs and the wildlife surrounding his wild camp.
Also wonder if they like to lick hair and nom ears 'cause that's where mites would likely hide out and, for ears, would be hard for them to reach with their tongue on their own.
Dirty humans... I always wash up before allowing the grooming. Cheetahs are very sensitive to chemicals and agents so limit as much as possible. But I've seen cheetahs groom themselves and others and pick out burrs and junk stuck in their fur and eat it.

Domestic cats will also suckle earlobes. It's a neotenic (reversion to infancy) behavior, and it also ties into allogrooming, a more general social behavior in felines of all sizes, in which mutual grooming fosters bonds between cats. =^[.]^=
Yeah! That's what I think too. But just used the common man language... Cubhood nipple mother remembrance. Nice to have an official psychiatric name for it. 🙂 I groom Gabriel and these cheetah back by simply scratching and petting them.

Hello, been watching your videos for several years now. I must ask do you worry about the poisonous snakes...I know crazy question but like mamabas, mozambique spitting cobras etc. Thanks for the video.
Sometimes. There are spitin cobras and puff aders. One cheetah may have been bitten on cheeks and caused necroses of fur. Another lion had leg swelled for days. Luckily Gabe and my cheetahs have encountered them. This place is in mts and rocky.
Not really much of a box there but probably not that easy to get a properly oversized box out there. So nice try at least.
Just wondering? Do u put Live prey like Antelope.or other prey Cheethas go after to fine there hunting skillz? I hope PETA dont throw a fit. I 💜 the work u do with these amazing catz! I truely love cheetahs and always wanted to see a cheetah live. I 💜 your work!
Glad you enjoy the cheetahs. We at Running Wild Conservation and myself won't live feed because it's just too unethical. We DO allow ones that are harness trained to walk into a game reserve next door and hunt for themselves. Several can do that. I'm asking RWC to train my female cheetah cub and her brother to do that. One day I may release her and she must be ready. For now I expect her to become a breeder. I need those right now.

a box with a bit of curry powder in water paste, smear on the inside of the box.
Yes, giving some spices or perfume... I've seen the leopards love that but I wanted Gabe to love the box for a box, like a house cat would and he didn't. The leopards are grapplers and why they love tearing things up like a box. Tigers too. They are ambushers and think why they like boxes, it hides them partially, like they would ambush something in the wild.
@@CheetahWhisperer I was more suggesting it because you said Gabriel likes scents
@@pj23nl Gabe LOVE scents. You see him doing that 1st when he approached the box but was really no interested. But, I was hoping Gabe might enjoy the box for what it was and not how it smelled, like the ambush cats do. Perhaps next enrichment, I'll spray some cologne on something and see.
@@CheetahWhisperer even failed enrichment is enrichment! for how ever short it is, have you tried straight up catnip or any other herbs? also, have you tried scent trails with him? hessian sack with bedding (pref pee'd on bedding) from someone else on a rope and drag a single trail through his enclosure.
@pj23nl Yeah. Just being there for Gabriel and even letting him sniff things is heaven to him. Seeing things as well. Gabe is a lot more mellow as he got older and I suppose that is normal. Thx for the suggestions. He does care for catnip.
What about squeaky toys? The squeaky noise represents a prey screaming out for them. My dogs didn't care for a lot of things except about certain food/snacks, squeaky toys and a soccerball.
I can try that but it MUST be something he can't tear apart and eat. Cheetahs tend to do that because they don't know better. Gabe ate some foam and part of my flip flop years ago and I had to give him laxatives.
@@CheetahWhisperer Right, or maybe materials that won't do any harm? Leather? A hide? Ofc with dogs you also have to keep an eye on them so they don't chew the squeaky part out of the toy and eat it. It seems Dogo Argentinos have a comparable bite pressure of up to 500psi ..... they're like big cats ;)
Do they like catnip? I've seen that some big cats like it.
The ambushers seem to like it the best.
How about a rabbit on a rail, like they do with greyhound races?
Yes, they have the 'zip line' there too. Kimi, Abi's cub likes it but never had the opportunity for Gabriel to try. 1st obstacle is walking the LONG distance to the zip line and passing Gabriel's arch enemies, which is any male cheetah. He fights between the fence so I can move him easily. Then he'd be distracted and won't want too. :(
Could you ever see Cheetahs being domesticated like large dogs? They are definitely powerful animals bust so is a Kangal with a bite force of over 700PSI compared to a Cheetah’s bite force of 400-500psi. Then again, I’m not entirely sure house cats are truly domesticated though mine loves to follow me everywhere and ignore half of my commands
Thx for asking. Cheetahs were kept in captivity in ancient times by Egyptians, India, and Asians. They had 1000s and i think some got released or escaped and were bred for tameness, thus domesticsted in some since. Incluld be wrong but very little records exist. As for domesticating today, no. They would loose their genetic make that allows them to exist in the hostile world they live. They are in trouble and not sure they will make it. Captive breeding for release and wild breeding is one help but more needs done. Keeping them as pets is really bad. They are big and will attack children but scared of dogs. They are very fragile amd suseptable to so many factors of health, like stress, strict diets, and get sick easliy. The average person will not know what to do and it will suffer. Amd they need more numbers to domesticate. Not enough cheetahs to even become domesticated. Only 10,000 exist totally. They need LOTS of space to run and not in someones backyard. They deserve their space in the wild but even that is disapearing. Human factors. I dont know what the solution is but Im trying to repopulate and rewild as many as I can. Ive only started and it takes years. I have 3 cheetaahs now from captive breeding.
@@CheetahWhisperer Here's the problem though: Earth is changing (something it has always done since it formed those billions of years ago), and those changes are weeding out the species that cannot adapt. Unfortunately, the cheetah seems to be one of them. Of course domestication would change their genome, but if that becomes the only way for these beautiful cats to survive, I'd rather see that happen than have them disappear completely. No, they're not for everyone, especially at the present. That said, you've seen the sheer variety of size we've given the dog. I could easily see the cheetah coming down in size as well. Out of the two, would you rather see the cheetah's descendants living with humans by the hundreds of thousands, or only ever in picture books after the last has died?
Have you tried a red laser pointer yet? I haven't found a cat no matter the age that can resist chasing the red dot around...maybe cheetahs would also find that interesting?
kzhead.info/sun/eLOSYbCOoaGepa8/bejne.html The answer to your question...
He did. Don't work
Yeah I tried that too and NONE of the cheetahs cared for it, not Gabe or even cheetah cubs. Too small and looked like a bug to them. The smaller cats LOVED it, wild cats.
I still keep wondering while seeing this video if maybe we should start having cheetahs as pets since their super nice and the least dangerous big cat
Most get triggered easily and will go after small children or prey animals. Abi and the cubs hate house cats and chase them. Long ago peoples had them as pets and maybe why they are so tameable.
Try a box with higher sides?
Yeah!!!
Have you ever tried grooming Gabriel back? 🤔 🧐
YES, but with my fingers. It's the same to him, the touching, rubbing, petting. But I do try and rub necks with him and he responds sometimes. You saw that near the end of the vid where he gives me a rub. I had spent some days trying to reinforce the rubbing and it worked.
I've had dogs bigger than this cat. Which is why I don't understand why cheetahs can't be pets! 😁😁😁
