09:51 Conclusion Gabriel Plays Hand Feeding Is Good
I'm a big fan of interactive care for the animals I'm responsible for. It's added risk, but overall safer when something goes wrong (an opened gate for instance). It is far less likely that something bad happens when the animals in your care are calm around people; especially when feeding.
It's best to start young in hand feeding, but Abi show that old cats can learn to be nice too. Hand feeding earns trust from the animals that allow it. Hunger is one of the top three instincts where an animal will become violent protecting it. When you earn that trust, it helps overall with that relationship with that animal. Thus I hand feed. There will be others who care for my animals and with them calmer around feeding, it help s in the overall temperament of these predators who meet new people. They learn that most all folks are not after their food and can be trusted. THEN you can progress to things like checking on health.
I don't hand fed all the time, but enough that it reinforces the trust between us and others. With a predator allowing hand feeding, you can also make SURE they take required or needed meds and supplements. Then you can progress to enrichment things like I did at the end of this video where I test whether my cheetahs will eat a hard boiled egg! They eat chicken... so why not an Egg?
Thanks for watching!

  • Big fan of hand feeding that promotes 'calm' around captive predators. Start them young, various types of good foods to prevent finicky eaters, but old cats can learn new tricks too. Abi has VERY food possessive and skittish around people but now is very calm. Her cubs, Kimi and Kayzer are already at that point due to hand feeding various foods they were cubs. With the calm, you can make sure they take meds and supplements for their health and enrich them by trying new things, like a Hard Boiled Egg!🥚🐆

    • @@taishokomin6181 I know they are trying to breed and rewild Asiatic cheetahs there now. I'm in favor of it of course. They had their 1st cubs this year. They even asked the project manager of Running Wild Conservation to help them. (Where my cheetahs are). She's got her own cubs to raise now too. It's important they preserve the sub species genetics in Iran. They should not mix the sub species genetics by introduction. The cheetahs there are adapted to the harsh arid environment there. Introducing outside of that would not work well, like in India where the African species don't do well with the high humid hot nature and strange prey of India. Half of them there have died since brought there. They should reexamine their methods and even goals there.

    • YES! It's a survival trait. Even a mom will feed herself before cubs in bad lean times. It is because the mom can survive and reproduce again. It's a resource decision, but instinctive. All mammalian moms and probably others in the animal kingdom will not be able to breed if their energy resources are not optimal.@@God-ch8lq

  • I think Dolph mentioned he was a dog person before working with cats. I might be remembering wrong, but if that’s true, he’s a cat person now! My cats like to be hand-fed, especially when they are being picky. I can tell that Gabriel and the other cats love Dolph, but the cats have their little pet peeves, and Dolph works around those pet peeves. I like how Dolph isn’t scared of a swipe - probably because the cats are just communicating their mood or that they don’t like something. Those cats are VERY careful not to hurt Dolph. I think Dolph mentioned that Gabriel is getting older (I can relate, Gabriel) and Gabriel’s getting grumpy. Fortunately, Gabriel has known Dolph for a long time (since kittenhood?), so Dolph knows to be extra gentle with Gabriel, and Gabriel cares about Dolph, so I doubt there will be any misunderstandings.

  • Is interesting what you said about the bond with Gabriel, and learning to read his moods. With my cat (who’s a bit smaller lol!) I’ve learnt over the years to read his body language, knowing that even a subtle (for us) movement back of the ears might indicate ‘I’ve had enough strokes for now, leave me alone!’ And I guess it’s something similar, and that you have to get used to the personality of the cat (as they get used to you…) Great vid!
