I bought a low grade commercial laser light and wanted to see if captive Africa BIG and small lesser cats and some other animals could be enriched by it. I showed the light to each of them and recorded their responses.

When I first saw them I almost wondered if he was joking and just put a bunch of domestic cats in an enclosure, lol. Turns out, they’re real! I can imagine myself visiting Africa and trying to pet one…

There is a lion park here in South Africa, you can hug and scratch some lions and baby lions but the male grown lions are not really up for being groomed

I’ve seen the recommendation (for laser lights being used with domestic cats) that you finish the ‘hunt’ with the dot disappearing on some kind of treat or toy so there is a sense of satisfaction and conclusion for the cats. That way the light is not just a source of unresolved frustration. If you decide to incorporate this into the enrichment for some of the cats, perhaps consider ways of doing this. :)
Good. Yes, and also if the dot is moving endlessly it doesn’t always get/ keep the feline’s attention. Stopping sometimes and building suspense seems to work more because it lets the felines get stalking and ready to pounce as opposed to wanting to just chase 100% of the time.
Great info! Ive been a natural horsemanship student and trainer for years and also student of dog training cats have always been a little harder to understand but I guess its common sense i lacked! Lol Of course this makes sense to me duh!
I work as a socializer in a private, no kill, domestic cat sanctuary. The way you were loving on them and bringing them a toy to enrich their lives was so exactly like, at least in spirit, what I do with the cats that are placed with us. Even the way you approached the cheetah is the way I approach our cats. Very cool to see.

Well thx! It's part survival and part not wanting to stress him out. I used to try and make up by walking with him along his fence but it didn't work. I don't visit that place anymore so he's better now, but he did do this to other folks too. Has better enclosure in a new location now.

I think Fushan is also a dominant male. In China, where I'm from, the horizontal stripes on the forehead and the one vertical down the middle of the forehead is the symbol for "King." Perhaps Fushan doesn't like you because he sees you as challenging his authority? Is he like that with everyone?
The servals made me smile. They’re just really large house cats and I love them.
The servals are a really nice cat. Non aggressive like cheetahs. Sure they hiss some, but only because they don't know you but never aggressive.

Quick tip for the viewers: there's some research suggesting laser play affects cats' mental health negatively because it lacks the "catching prey" aspect of a normal game. Cats participating in it regularly have been shown to have consistently elevated stress levels, be more apathetic and aggressive (in the frustration aggression sense)

Fusian, still alive, always targeted me for stalking. If he ever got out he'd kill.me 1st. He has an unwarranted grudge against me. And even remembered after a two year absence. Cheetahs are beautiful inside and out.

He hates his electric fence and goes ballistic when touching it... takes chunks out of his tractor tire... I've seen it. I was petting him one day through the fence and I think his ear touched the electric line. He suddenly when completely postal and roared 2ft from me. I left in a hurry. It's been anger at me from then on but I don't see him anymore as I have my cheetahs at another project now. Running Wild Conservation. But thx!

I've got two house cats that are brothers but their reaction to the laser light is so different. The tuxedo cat almost never goes after it but the grey tabby... For him, the laser is crack in light form! He can hear the click of it from across the house and comes racing for it with a crazed look in his eyes. He will follow it no matter what I do with it even fast tight circles to the point of him getting dizzy and falling over(and he still wants more!).
That's cool. Enjoys it.

The goat is mean... the cheetah are not.
I can kinda see why, cheetahs are mostly friendly towards humans due to the fact that we don't match the characteristics of their prey at all, but goats don't really give a shit and they are known to sometimes charge people. They don't injure badly most of the time but they can have an attitude.

Black leopards are really high strung and smart. Very active.
raccoons love the laser light too. I was playing with my cats outside one night and underneath the car I didn’t know there were raccoons and they were running out after the laser light.😂😂😂

It's the people that BUY the furs that I would happily see karma doing its thing. I am all in favour of the UN treaties against torture, but I'd be willing to allow it on anybody who thinks that a human looks better in a suit made of the skin of a predator than it does on the original predator.

I'm always amazed by the way you interact with these animals, especially the Cheetahs, servals and caracals. I wish I could be with you when you're there. I'd absolutely love to be able to have interactions like this, because cats just love me. I do miss my Guide Dogs, too, and I can't get another one right now, because I'm unable to work anymore.

I know! 2nd longest cat legs to the cheetahs. Makes them the 2nd fastest too. But very weak cats and loose fights so they are quite non aggressive tonsurvive like the cheetahs as well.
My cat and I play with a laser , and we were watching this together because she loves cat vids. As soon as she saw the laser dot she started tracking it and then tried to swat it on my computer screen. Now she's gone off to her toy basket waiting for me to come and get the laser out.

it's kinda funny, my cousin's dog is absolutely fascinated by laser pointers and goes crazy any time they take out the remote that makes the light. when the light isnt on, he looks up at the remote as if to try and will it to turn on. he goes from looking back from the remote, to the floor, to the remote, to the floor, and back and forth until it turns on. he doesnt give up even if they tell him they're done and stares intently at it sitting on the table for a good long while. he's adorable lol, you cant point it at your foot or he will full on attack it and it HURTS

The African wildcat (atleast I think that’s what you said) looks almost exactly like my cat except he is a lil more orange than them. His name is gizmo and he is a bengal cat. He kinda looks like a tiger but alot less menacing We’ve had him for about 6-7 years.

It's funny how the Serval's have such a stiff upwards angle to their neck when they run, unlike the other cats. Got a more dog-like gait to their movements. Would be cool to meet big cats some time.

Yup. People bred Africa Wild Cats to make house cats. I believe other species in the Middle East became domesticated by living amongst humans to become other breeds of house cats.

There are some laser lights you can get that have changeable tips on them so you can have them chasing something much larger like a mouse shape etc. They are still home use type lasers. Also I have found that my kitty loves it best if after a good chase, i land the light on a kick bag or something she can sink her teeth into. For these guys, i would suggest something like a small bite of meat or something maybe? So they get a reward for all that energy they expended :). In any case ending the game by landing it on something they can either eat or tear apart makes it less frustrating and more fun for them. Especially the feral cats I look after who are used to hunting for their food.

Yes... servals are so elegant. So tall but complete control of their spindly legs. Accurate mouse bird strikes and toys. A nice cat too. Non aggressive.
