Toyota GR Yaris father & son review. The ups & downs of running a GR Yaris as a daily driver

Our Toyota GR Yaris first arrived 3 months ago and from the start, the plan was I would share this car with my son, Charlie. In this first report, I show some of the mods we've done to the car and we discuss the good & bad points of running a GR Yaris longterm.

Jesus, this makes me miss my Dad. He died of a brain tumour last year, and this makes me miss the chats we'd have as I grew up. Of course, he wasn't as wealthy as Harry, but I remember him umming and ahhing over whether he'd buy an E46 M3 after I bought my E92. So glad that he did in the end, as it gave him some good times for a while.
I feel you mate
Thanks for sharing this... Sorry about your loss
I also lost my Dad, brain tumor, aged 60. He also loved motor racing and was a young marshall at Brooklands back in the day. The best event he took me to was the BOAC at Brands 1968, watching that GT40 1075 win! Yes, he believed in Jesus too...
I thought the exact same thing while watching this. Hang in there. Over time the pain fades and the memories keep him alive in your mind. My dad was a gearhead that loved wrenching and driving small import sports cars and motorbikes. I would've loved to share my recent cars/bikes with him. He passed about five years ago from cancer just one month before his 60th.
@@miloweeks It's a horrendous disease. Mine was 62. I still couldn't get near him on a motorbike, haha.
Quite literally he must be the best dad in the world ever. What an inspiration as a father and bloody good chap to let his son play with such a collection of mans toys. Charlie, it’s not normal. I hope you know that.....! My dad had a Volvo 343 and a Nissan Sunny. And he never let me drive them. Probably for the best actually. But still, it’s the principle.
*My Dad had a push bike and wouldn't even let me ride that !*
What's a 'Dad' 😔
My dad died when I was 10 in 1963. He had a Vauxhall .
My dad had several Daimler Sovereigns and he let me drive them, more fool him!
My dad still dosnt trust me and I'm 38 !!!
Finally. I learn that Harry's son is Charlie and not Henry Catchpole.
I can see the similarities, but Henry does much, much better stuff than Harry does, even at his best. I almost never watch H.'s G. anymore.

😂😂😂😂👍
Harry and Henry are the same person at different stages of life but living in the same time.
A really nice piece to air on Father’s Day. Makes me miss my dad.
Al the best to you.
❤️
Ditto.
and me mine too, though he was never a car guy…👍
I love that every time Mr Harry talks about his son, he has a big smile on!
Harry is the best car and motorcycle reviewer in the world.
His farm channel is a hidden gem too.
@@southjerseysound7340 Correct!
Car for sure , motorbikes 44 takes the cake for me
Let's not forget Bud Lindemann. His reviews have stood the test of time.
@@patricksterling7389 BUD LINDEMANN was just a caretaker of his voice. Do not compare them, Harry explains as the good father that each one should have.
“I’ll put the stop start back on because it annoys the hell out of Charlie” 😂 😂 😂
Father’s Day special! Thanks Harry and Charlie.
hello James, how are you doing. I hope you are safe and in good health. Looking for a new friend and i saw your pic here. I hope you don't mind thank you.
A palpable warmth in this video. A pleasure as always.
I'm in hospital for a big scary operation and watching Harry's Garage is the only thing giving me comfort and peace atm 👌
@@inbloom08 Hope it went well. Best of wishes!

@@maxmartin-merrells3723 thanks legends everything went well and I live another day 🤘🤘🙏🙏
LOL - Harry turned his hi performance hatch into the farms van. Brilliant.
🤣
Happy Father's Day Harry, I wish you'd been my dad. My dad died in 1996 & was never that nice to me. He never once told me that he loved me, but I live my two girls more than anything & tell them I love them every day!!! Mind you, one is 19 & the other is 25, but I still tell them. 😂
Nice.
Good on you. We should all try and do things better than our parents. My parents were great so the bar is high for me....
Big respect mate . Sorry those early years were tough . Your 2 daughters will flourish and you’ve played your part in that ! Are they drivers too?! 👍
Really enjoyed the discussion both of you had in this video. Toyota were recently testing the GR Yaris's 3 cylinder 1.6 engine for their Corolla Hatchback hydrogen-powered internal combustion engined racecar, intended for the 24hr race in Fuji Speedway. They admit that there's a lot of issues they need to solve (packaging of the tank), but this is one of Akio Toyoda's way of prolonging the internal combustion engine. He mentioned that if Japan goes too hasty in banning internal combustion engined cars, the current business model of the car industry will collapse, thus causing a lot of job losses. We really should give him credit where its due.
Agreed. Akio san has really changed my perception of Toyota - he was involved in the LFA development, and was an advocate of bringing fun-yet-affordable cars back on the company's priority list.
I doubt the upcoming GR 86 will get as much appreciation as the GR Yaris because it won't deliver quite the straight-line acceleration that the WRC homologation special offers, but I'm just as intrigued about that too. 184 ft/lbs torque available at a much earlier RPM than the outgoing GT86's 151 ft/lbs is enough to excite me, considering that the weight hasn't changed much.
He's a remarkable boss to have at Toyota, where profits keep on increasing (£14bn in 2020). He's a proper enthusiast and fully understands current trends, which aren't great for both the car industry and consumers in my view. We're rushing the introduction of EV without thought, thanks to governments not fully understanding the implications. Interesting few years ahead..
@@harrysgarage I think some of the top industry bosses will soon start pushing to have a sensible approach to this EV nonsense and look at other alternatives. The ICE is far from dead.
Planet over money
The colour of those wheels combined with the red is just stellar! Good call!
I like that Harry doesn't let price interfere with his judgment of what a great car is. So many people by expensive cars just to pose for strangers -
Truth
Harry doesn't get enough credit most of the time and while I'm not a farmer I've been binge watching his farm videos. He's probably the last guy you'd think of but unlike most people he's not afraid to get his hands dirty.
Also commented this (before seeing yours)... Totally agree!
Sport mode will save you a button press, because it disables stop-start as well.
Came looking for this comment as I was going to mention it too.
Absolute home run with the wheel color. Not at all showy/ostentatious and like you said just adds some sophistication. Very cool.
When the GR Yaris was released in Australia they had an "introductory" price of $39,950 drive away (which includes all fees and taxes) for the first 1,000 units and they were all sold within a week. Then it was increased to $44,950 drive away for another 200. Now the Toyota Australian web site lists them at $53,927 for the GR and $59,177 for the Rallye, both drive away. It seems the market is accepting the pricing as there is hardly any stock available, so your situation suggests that it is a global demand.
It's 100k aud in Malaysia 😂😭😂😭
@@mochatitus479 More like 120-140k AUD in Hong Kong haha
In Mexico were all sold in 24 hrs!! And circuit pack was not sold in Mexico 😞
In the U.S. we just get the middle finger from Toyota.
@@fortheloveofnoise9298 regulations...
Trust Harry to bag the very limited GR Yaris Minivan Editon.
Am I the only one that got sad when he converted it to basically a van?
Minivan how?
@@erickeane471 yes. It's just a bloody hatchback! It's there to be used! Whether you drive an old Vauxhall Corsa or a Rolls-Royce Cullinan, at the end of the day it's just a car and should be used as such. Nothing worse than people who keep cars sitting with little to no use. Bear in mind, Harry is the man who took a Ferrari Testarossa off-roading in the northern Sahara, and has also braved his local river ford in it, and who owns the highest-mileage Countach in existence (the former Earls' Court show car), which he has owned for well over half its life so far. He also owned an intergalactic-mileage R129 SL600, and for a few years his daily driver was a Pagani Zonda F. When that went, he was commuting to work in a 1960s Ferrari 330GT. This is not a man who is precious about cars.
And took a Roller to the Pole!
@@modmod392 not to the pole, just to the outer edge of the Arctic Circle. Still very cool.
The Toyota GR Yaris. Simply amazing... Cheers from Argentina!
I like the bit at around 19 minutes where Harry absolutely nails it and Charlie looks over at the speedo suddenly, as if to say "wait, how fucking fast are we going right now??" hahaha.
Props to Chris Martin for joining Harry on the drive.
Thought it was the Welsh guy from Goldie Lookin Chain....
@@johnmoruzzi7236 - aren’t they all ‘welsh’?
Props to Harry for keeping his love child Chris a secret 🥳

Love the wheels! Black wheels are so overdone nowadays.
A wonderful episode between the two gentlemen. There is so much more usable information in Harry's reviews as opposed to people just rattling off car data and statistic. Bloody ace there sir!
Happy father's day to both of you! I can only hope to share this passion for cars with my little one, once he's grown up.
Harry, your son is a natural presenter, loving this Father’s Day KZhead upload, thank you
I love that I can share my car passion with my sons and was pleased to go with my eldest to the London Concours where I was able to meet and have a quick chat with Harry. Thanks for that Harry.
Perfect fathers day video, dad and son discussing car dynamics and the 'you shouldn't be telling me that' conversation.
Great video, lovely to see father and son talking about something they are both passionate about, interesting different perspectives. Maybe this could be first in a series? Great work Gents!
I'm not gonna say this is the best Harry's Garage video yet, but it's up there. Perfect fathers day watch. Thank you!
I’m the same age as Charlie, he’s one lucky whippersnapper!
18:05, father and son in total sync. This has me missing my dad who was most definitely not a car guy. Thanks for the honest review and please, cherish your time together,
That was really cool. May your father rest in peace mate ❤
Excellent video. Lovely idea having your son contribute and releasing the film today. Hope you’ve had a lovely Father’s Day.
Brilliant, I could watch Harry's Garage all the time without switching off to watch something else 😁
hello, how are you doing. I hope you are safe and in good health. Looking for a new friend and i saw your pic here. I hope you don't mind thank you.
I brought a car from the same dealership a few years ago, brilliant service
Love it! Great review and I am so happy that you and your son share the passion for special interest cars. Good call on the alloy wheels.
What a great review, loved seeing you both chatting about the car.
Harry has a nice aesthetic those wheels are spot on.
The new wheel colour really makes the red pop. Class looking car.
Gee the wheels look fab in that colour. Going to copy that once mine is finally here. And great vid as always, both entertaining and insightful. Thanks a lot, Harry and Charlie!
" Function not available" in stereo was priceless. Charlie has that to treasure. Cheers to you both.
Love that scarlet flame Yaris matching so well with those gold wheels. Best looking Yaris I’ve seen.
I could only imagine having a dad like this.
My dad would have loved this
What a fab review with total exposure and honesty and great father and son chat.
Really love this. In fact, more of this please! You two are wonderful together
There’s a new GR extreme version testing at Nurburgring now
Interesting..
A sequel to the original
GR MR 🤣
It's Toyota Europe's prototype testing for Rally parts.and aero on the ring ... Hence it wears the plate KAM like the old school Toyota Rally cars... Also Toyota has not ordered past the 25,000 number from the original parts suppliers they originally ordered ie, Michelin, jtekt, BBS, etc also the factory has to be retooled by November for other GR projects. Hence the last deliveries for the GR Yaris are next May latest..
@@DarthCSL they could always do something like sell the last 1k cars with an aero kit, upgraded seats and upgraded suspension
I miss my dad :( he loved cars and we always chose cars together
Been waiting for that one. It worked very well having views from the two of you, great review.
Fantastic video Harry and great to see Charlie in a video too. You both compliment each other in the review of this little pocket rocket!
Although I already follow him on Instagram, we normally only see Charlie during the harvest, so was great to get a second Metcalf opinion!
High seats for B road cars is something I've long understood. I used to follow my friend in his S4 down B roads in my 997. The 997 was much quicker, but I couldn't take the chances he could because I didn't have the visibility. Always heard people moan about the seating position in Clio 182's and always thought it was almost perfect for fast road driving personally.
Same as Abarth 595/695's - it feels silly high, but get on the B Roads and suddenly makes sense
I liked the seat in the 306 as high as possible. You feel on top of the car and have good visibility. Easy to place the bonnet. Maybe because I have a motorcycle background.
I have a Clio 172 and agree entirely
@@robmorgan8369 Shame with the Abarth the gearbox chassis and suspension is shit.
@@teabagtowers3823 that's the charm and character, designed in by Abarth to add to the experience lol
Loved this, So nice to see father and son together.
Lovely to see your connection together… and what a beauty of a Yaris 🥰🙏
I’m sure the GR is a far better machine than an Integrale in many ways . Faster , better handling , better equipped. But if I had the choice I’d be taking the Delta . The GR is a rally car but the Integrale is a Rally God . 🇮🇹
😂😂 Like father, like son! I'm sure you're as proud of him as I am of mine! Great video both!
I have the Feverish red as well, so far I have resisted the temptation to modify, but I had not reckoned on the subtle change in wheel colour. Well done Harry and Charlie great video.
What a brilliant video! Learnt so much about the car and in such a ‘natural’ presentation style. Well done both!
Cant wait for this one!
Wheels are spot on 👍🏼
Definetely enjoyed this video! Thank you for your dedication, it's like watching good old Top Gear videos with their journeys. Especially liked that you are able to use this car as a small cargo vehicle (it's even more amazing after this)) Liked!
just an AWESOME car! congratz on delivery
What I love about Harry aside from stellar reviews and insight worth its weight in gold.... drives a Yaris while wearing a Patek Philippe. Rock on, Harry!
Brilliant as ever... By including the thoughts of Charlie it adds a whole new dimension to your content
Harry and Charlie, fantastic.
Wheel colour is spot on 👌🏼
Father's day special aye ❤️
I thought the red was going to be "cliche' red" but seeing THIS red I love it and would love to detail one, it's brilliant 👍👍
Your son is quite fortunate to have you, great dad to have. Real gentleman.
loved it all through, dad son episode.🙋 Would surely love to see you both more often.
Great video - been waiting for this. Interesting at a 6'2/3" guy I find the seat height is liveable and I need to do the mirror mod. Also found it interesting what was said about the limits, coming from a range of "warm/spicy" but never the hottest model of car ownership to the GR, it feels like it's driving to different rulesets and currently the limitation is me as the driver. Look forward to future updates from you both.
I really like that you changed the wheel colour from black. Black hides all the lines and shape.
This is the best review of the GR Yaris I have seen. Unfortunately I have not seen any available in the USA TO date. Thank you and your son for this information.
Very very enjoyable video to watch. It's always nice to hear another point of view. Excellent!
19:22 Oh my! My dad would have gone MENTAL if I'd touched his steering wheel whilst he was driving. Harry is so easy-going.
The colour is great!
I really enjoyed your review, such good interaction between father and son. Coolest dad
Great video and insight to ownership of this wonderful car. Even down to the road noise and servicing etc. Very good - thanks.
Very special car, the last of its kind. Wish I had somewhere to store one
Sunday, a beer and Harry's garage. Quality time!
Such a good call on the wheels, transformed the looks!
Thanks Harry - perfect content for me. Considering chopping my Clubsport S for a GR. Had seen your initial review / then the insta collection of ‘Oza’. So this was a really helpful insight after some use - mirror modification - seat height and the Apple play replacing any nav worries etc - Top job 🏁
It's a family affair........ Your son is mighty lucky to have a dad with such a well endowed car collection, sure he makes the most of it, lol. Great review guys, thanks .
Got to say, if Harry doesn't look like a farmer Charlie certainly does.
Absolutely lovely wheels and point combination Harry!
Nice to here your lads take on the car as well harry 👍👍
Nice to see a Yaris in red colour 🙂
Was gonna say the same thing. Almost every one is see is bloody white
@@jack14kd I spotted red one the other day at my local Tesco's I've seen a white and black one before but red is the best colour for it.
I never could see the attraction of lowering a seat so your eyes are level with the top of the steering wheel. I always have my seat as far up as it will go.
same
Thats not true if you're over 6 feet tall.... depends on stature.
@@cmacd8879 Im 6.4 and I prefer that higher seating position. But then im not a racing driver....
@@cmacd8879 How can that be? Why would anyone want their eyes level with the top of the steering wheel, pretending they're a F1 driver.
I think your choice is impeccable. Not only is that a cracking drivers car for you to enjoy, but in the future that is going to be a classic and highly desirable.
That was fun to watch. Your son looks like a good man.
"I'd quite like a track day"..... "Oh, I'll give someone a ring......"
As an owner (couple of weeks, only just done the recommended run-in!) I have to say I agree with every single point you’ve made! Not sure I want to file the rear view mirror mount mind!! I took it out in the pissing rain and the capabilities of this car are indescribable. Absolute weapon. Delighted I ordered it back in December!
2000 miles in and I absolutely love mine. I'm taking it to the Scottish Highlands this week. Adaptive cruise control all the way up and perfect for the Old Military Road once I'm there!
This car is even more beautiful when you see it up close. I have seen two in white colour but I like this red one very much. Great choice and video, thank you.
The red doesn’t look good in most online photo’s, but watching this video i’m starting to reconsider my thoughts. Especially with the gold wheels, looks mint.
A few GR yari where I live, and red is by far the worst colour
Bought a Scottish origin car Click and Collect in Milton Keynes depot from AC and I'm in the south. Was sooooo easy.
Lovely video, Harry. Sweet to see you and your son discussing the car. I hope I’m approaching as cool a father in 20 years time and that my son also seems surprised when I tell him I might opt for the hotter version of the car we’re in 😄 All the best.
Absolutely loving the colour combo 👍
this was great, i have a 182 clio for a back lane commute, the GR yaris is the only car that would pry my hands of it's steering wheel.
I have a GR and my mate has the Clio. Totally different league mate. The Yaris destroys back roads
