Should I modify my Toyota GR Yaris? I tried out a tuned version which had an ECU remap for lots more power, suspension changes and a few even more important mods which I will reveal in the video. Or should I buy the new one?

this feels weird after watching the facelift gr yaris video
@@alanberner6183what about facelifts from R35GTR?
Your picture of your face in the closing credits looks like the kind of temporary pass pictures when you signed in fancy buildings 🤓
10k upgrade, OK were not doing this, ordering a Porsche 911 GT3,: yes please!
Intake, exhaust and remap surely Matthew..............
If money isn’t an issue, definitely get the new one and upgrade the new one to Evolve’s package!
The new one's interior is such a deal breaker for me though 😭
@@fj717 Not for me, I think the slab of plastic is awesome. Very purposeful, very racy. Same essence as a Mk1 MX-5.
@@fj717hey it’s ugly but its more functional
Love the interior of the new one. Very practical, as an interior should be. A bit like an early 2000's Iveco Daily, turned towards the driver, I like it 😂
For 90% of viewers, money is an issue 😄
As a GR Yaris owner, I think the car really comes into its own with a few basic mods. Exhaust, seat lowering, intake and a rear wing really makes it look, sound and drive fantastic. First and most important mod is the exhaust imo. Just get a milltek system, they sound great, really easy to mount, and much cheaper than this.
Not to forget the rear view bracket
@@ImNotHere4750 Not that important if you lower the seat imo, but I guess it depends on your height. Definitely a great mod if you keep seats standard!
@@Cernunn0s90 Did both in mine, but then again i did them at the same time so i cant really say which one made what difference. But after those two the car changed a lot.
crazy to think how well it handles compared to a bmw
@@hassyg4083this car that Mat drive handles as amazing as the Citroen C4 Concept Rally Car 2007.
+20 HP from the exhaust? Not sure about that.
I am sure. It's a lie. The same is about the intake. Evolve is a scam.
If the complete exhaust system was changed then I'd believe, afterall, the biggest flow restriction would come from the CAT and mainfold setup. But that much - if any - gains just from an axleback? I don't believe it without a dyno.
Yup, like Toyota would leave that on the table
Yeah 40bhp from exhaust & intake. 😅
I've heard those plush dice hangers add at least 50 BHP.
I would love to see more videos of testing modified cars on the channel. Love that GR.
I also love those GR cars like GR SUPRA 2019.
Mat being brutally honest. The power gains are a bit generous
They are BS.
20 hp for both merely intake and exhaust without tune would suggest that the engineers for the gr yaris is wildly incompetent 😂
Have a HKS Legamax exhaust and the Eventuri on mine. Both intake and exhaust are essential mods in my opinion. Not fussed on lowering the suspension as love the way I can take speed humps without gritting my teeth worrying about the front lip and weirdly despite being 6’2” the driving position never bothered me but would love some Recaro CS retrimmed one day for purely aesthetic reasons. Imran if you’re reading these comments, the Eventuri is an amazingly designed intake and very happy with mine, so well done to all involved 👏🏻
Almost £1400 for an intake? It's about £1000 more than it should be, and that's being generous. Car modding has become a joke. It's more like jewellery, you're being made a fool of by swindlers.
@@bst857 GR tax! Don’t ever look up induction kit prices for other more premium and exotic cars as they are often double that and essentially it’s only piping and a filter
@@mugenmarkDon't try and pull the wool over my eyes, I know you can get much cheaper (and not bad) intakes for the GR, and I also know that Eventuri charge the same for the exotic intakes, its just that they usually need two intakes so thats why it costs double. If you want to spend that much then fine, but the truth is you WANTED to pay over the odds, but for some reason you don't want to admit it :D
@@bst857 Not trying to pull the wool over anyone’s eyes. I know it’s an expensive intake as I’m not sponsored by the brand and bought it with my own hard earned (ish) money and not trying to pretend otherwise. I’m just saying it’s a premium product and priced accordingly. I know there’s much cheaper options out there so the choice is yours. In fact I very nearly bought the Forge upper airbox which is considerably cheaper but I liked the look of the Eventuri more and it sounds good so I’m happy. The MST if you’re referring to that also performs very well but personal preference and all that.
I think mat, best course of action is to follow your heart - the fundamental visibility issues can't be fixed with performance upgrades and a lot of the reconfiguring will make the facelift a better car further into the future - don't fall victim to buyers remorse but keep in mind how the facelift impressed you.
Imagine if the EVO IX also got a facelift like GR Corolla.
Personally, I would do everything in my power to get the upcoming refreshed version for the new dash alone. It looks like an old school group b rally car dash and there’s nothing else like it on the market.
This car has similar engine powerplant like the Peugeot 908.
It‘s funny how different taste can be. The new dash would be the reason why I would never ever buy the facelift, no matter how good the rest of the car is.
@@Timmax95 exactly, toyota lost their mins in a bad way with the new interior looks
The new dash is the one thing that would stop me getting the new one 😂
Personally I hate the new dash , but everyone’s different I suppose
I hate how these body kits look like, they always look really tacky. But to each their own. I like the spoiler though, should've came like that
For my GR Eventuri - best mod as this really wakes the character up with the spooling turbo and dump values whooshes Akra Exaust - 25kg weight saving and sounds great Endless Break pads - great for track and massively improves stopping
i think the new one is a better car in general. the interior is better, though i like these gauges from the ongoing model.
But i personally think the new GR Yaris is as great as 2002 Yaris.
On the road the standard suspension doesn’t need changing. It’s absolutely brilliant for British B roads out the box
Do it mat and don't forget to bring us for the experience. would love to see what this all entails to set the car to your preferences.
I'm looking to swap mine for the new model auto this time round. I didn't do any mods on my current GR4 this time I will be looking to do so.
Imran, loved his stuff since the E36 days so long ago 😂 cheers from Hong Kong
20hp from an air intake upgrade and no other tuning? I’d say Imran is blowing smoke
Nah its actually dyno proven the eventuri intake increases the power, torque, performance on graph and incar feel
The spoiler and stickers make up 15 of those horsepowers
The lowered seat now looks too low relative to the wheel. All the air bags will be too high now, dangerous.
Not true, that’s like saying if you adjust your steering wheel it’s dangerous.
Sounds like the second gen GR Yaris solves a bunch of these issues, and is more robust for mods, surely the smart (if rather expensive!) way to go ;-)
I own a 2021 GRY and it has been a great fun journey, load of mods, always put a smile on your face. The facelift version performance indeed more subtle, Toyota do listen to customer feedback, 300hps with heaps of upgrades, etc. But I would not buy a MK2, for example if you own a tuned Evo6, you may not upgrade to Evo7,8,9
I love these collab videos!
Your gt3rs is one of the best spec ive ever seen man...beautiful n classy
The piano black plastic extra bits look a bit Halfords, the suspension was perfectly tuned from factory so why change it. The car isn’t a stock fiesta 1.0 so why mod the engine, the Toyota engineers really did a great job on the car and the stock tune is just right. I do agree the exhaust sound does need a tweak but that’s about it
This is nice. Nearly bought one of those but decided on a stinger. I keep seeing modified cars. Let me tell you. Money will be spent as soon as warranty is done...
If you love the car and are keeping it long term I'd definitely do it. Makes it more if an occasion
Just do it Mat, it looks great💥
And If I were to modify a Yaris GR I'd only go to LICHFIELD to have it done..Ha !!
GR Yaris...here in Malaysia, I just only dream and wish to own one. This modified one... Makes me cry.. brilliant
Ive Recaro sportster cs in mine, they slide and recline, best seats for these.
Wing, exhaust and intake are the most essential. The rest of the kit is just too chav and the original ride height is great for the type of car it is.
I will have the "new" facelifted one from the factory with the great retro dashboard, thank you very much (and actually I don't like LAUD exhausts)... and it seems like the steering wheel is sitting to high for the lower seat?
Thanks for the video and Stay safe ✌️.
Superb vid as usual. Leave it as standard! It's brill out of the box. Ok, i've fitted Automotive Passion carbon spats behind the front wheels but no drilling was needed.
Just do the intake and the exhaust. Leave the suspension and seat alone.
Seat first, then exhaust, then intake.
If you only invest in an ECE approved Miltek exhaust and eVenturi Airbox, you’re already a long way and the pleasure given by those 2 modifications is immense.👌👍
I’m sure Matt will sell the old Yaris and buy the new one.
Matt should try out the SAAB 9-3- T16 car once.
Matt dont own anything.. it just sound good to get more views....
Matt is dumb he should get the celica GRMN on pre order when launched
You have to do head to head comparison, and based on the results you get, you'll be able to decide about the upgrade. Of course we get the comparison video.
I have no idea about how much the GRY second gen with be. But one thing I can not unsee is the dashboard on it- it looks like Toyota ripped it straight out of a 1993 DAF truck, you'l be stuck looking at that all the time. I'd stick with the original GRY and do some tasteful mods.
I didn't like the spoiler, it looked too busy but the rest of the kit looked awesome though I doubt I would spend money getting that done. I don't like the sound from the outside but it sounds bloody awesome from in the car which is what matters. All in all I'm a big fan of what he's done to this but I'd probably not lower seat at all being that I'm 2 inches shorter than him so my build would be a cheaper than his. I'd go for the power upgrades, suspension and leave the rest standard but deleting the nonsensical fake noises as he has too.
The spoiler looked like the 2006 FIAT GRANDE PUNTO.
so lucky to be in uk, in spain the only model of rigid buckets that we allowed to put are the recaro pole, at 900€each one + other 400 of bases.... + homologation
Honestly that’s actually so nice
That yaris looks epic
Never seen the attraction of having your chin level level with the bottom of the window in a non-competition car. The Halfords chin spoiler says it all.
" Look !! An elf driving a car ! " Surely it would have gone faster if they'd sprayed the air filter purple (metallic) .
How would this compare to the Litchfield tuned GR Yaris? Maybe we should find out 😊
Litchfield are professionals.
Get it done absolutely gorgeous
owned an evo IX , for 11 years . now drive a yaris gr for 2 years and it similar for sure, an evo is more raw for sure but it has a similar character.
40bhp from intake and exhaust, is the oe that restrictive or is this internet nymbers?
He’s only trying to sell his Rip off price products
There's 100% no way a little intake adds 20hp lol.
It´s not the intake that does this. It´s the car itself. The GR Yaris is rated at 260 HP from factory but even a stock one squeezes out around 300 HP on a dyno any given day.
@@XLargeEricthe guy said that the new intake added 20hp. He didn't say that when he dynos the car it's 300hp. And kike the OP said, 20hp by just adding an intake is a lie.
That Imran was talking horse 💩
@@bestcrazyboy8487 Absolutely! Intake+exhaust can not give +40HP. Emran lies.
The one in the video adds 13bhp and costs £1000+ I’ve got the open MST for £410 and it adds 10bhp so it was a no brainer for me..
I feel like the wheels just look a bit too tucked in. Maybe wider wheels or a small spacer would make a huge difference
The 2024 moved the reverse lights because the exhaust would melt it 😂😂😂
👀
The MK1 will always be the "original " one. The main "problems" are easily fixed... High driving position? There are a lot and cheap of lowering kits for the oem seat. Rearview mirror too low? For 20 eur you can buy a easily install a riser. More power? Intake, exhaust, remap...alone or in combination. In Japan they sell a kinto official upgrade with warranty for de ecu. From my point of view, there is no reason to upgrade to MK2 (that has also a questionable interior and also exterior)
The only thing needed is hopefully LSD cooling solution can be retrofitted to the mark 1.
@@idokwatcher2062there are cooling solutions already, better ones hopefully coming as well. But you'd only need those on a track.
Afraid I simply would not believe an extra 80bhp unless I saw it with my own eyes on back to back dyno runs against it as standard. My guess,... 5ish bhp from the intake, 5ish from the exhaust.... 30 to 40bhp from a remap. Mat would have been blown away by an extra 80bhp!! Can you honestly see the might of Toyota cocking up on some intake plastics to the tune of 20bhp!!
believe it these cars amazing when it comes to tuning potential most out of the box are running higher power than stated
So the poor Toyota engineers went through the engine with a fine toothcomb, & changed pistons & various other major components & all they gained was a 19 bhp increase for the Gen2...... & all along, all they'd done wrong was design some shoddy intake plastic mouldings that could have got them 20bhp... Come on! 😂😂😂
Only sad thing about these mods is theyre approaching nearly 20% of the value of the car once you've had them fitted unless you can do it all yourself - cool thing about GR yaris is it feels special for £30k
Well I've got an f80 m3 that's got $40,000 worth of work done in aftermarket st7ff and I wouldn't change a thing about it
Some people buy and upgrade cars for fun, rather then go for a return on "investment"
If you keep the standard hardware everything is reversable for ot much outlay. All of those mods would resell easily.
After watching your vid on the New Yaris regarding the seat position and steering wheel AirBag..Won't the airbag in that modified car be aiming in the wrong place now the seat is 2inches lower..!!! Food for thought...Ha !
I like the black one, if you should keep it stock i would just lower it, looks way better
all this car needs looks wise is two big round hella lights in the front bumper
Love a crossover episode! These are my boys 🥲
That body kit (apart from the spoiler) looks janky.
Yes. I think it is too much and shiny parts don't go well with matt finish.
@@marc_overmars exactly. Looks like and eBay special.
Mostly liking the spoiler on this but the front splitter looks a bit flimsy.
Would look great in white 👌
That tuner guy makes very good impression!
I'd definitely change the seat 👌🏾... dont 4get, imran, had the seat set up 4 him self.
I haven't watched the video, but do you sell your gen 1 GR, ready for the gen2? I think that is how you make it better.
As I’m watching , you need to test this car against a standard GR. 80bhp is a massive gain , I’d like to see this gain in the real world.
The exhaust sound👍👍
Glad that I watched entire video. Almost stopped after the first two "negative comments." Owner of car definitely a good sport receiving honest criticism or opinions without getting offended.
The thing is Mat, you drove the new 2024 edition and was so excited by the new refinements/upgrades made and was thinking about POTENTIALLY selling your car and buying the new version. The extra money you could use to upgrade your own car than spending considerably more on buying the latest one
What a Humble Gentleman who just enjoys His ride thats what its all About
The body kit is fanstastic. Theres something nice about the understated styling of stock but it just looks right with the wing.
Get the new car, and do the intake and exhaust mods on that. The body and suspension kits look good, as does the wrap, but are all unnecessary. Not sure the bigger rear wing would look good by itself. You can easily tune the car for more power, and as the new car has upgraded engine parts, it's a better candidate for such.
That cold start sounds like I'd be crawling under the car with power saw lmao
Litchfield is the best place to take your Yaris.
So close to a fun driving road Barton-le-Clay to Hitchin (B655)
I feel like I've seen lots of videos/tests that more or less prove that modifying intakes and exhausts on a modern car doesn't actually add power because modern car ECUs will account for any additional flow and force the car to operate within manufacturer specifications despite better breathing?
Does the seating change invalidate crash test certification etc.? Or is it a simple like for like change? And all is ok from an insurance perspective...
Probably faked it anyway!
Yes it would do as would no longer have the airbags in the bolsters and the front airbag would’ve been calibrated for the standard seat height so wouldn’t like to have a biggy with aftermarket lowered seats.
Great job Imran!
🥱🙄
Personally I'd just go for the exhaust, air intake and remap a hot hatch is supposed to be soft
The downside is that the car is quite heavy to drive like Peugeot 206.
@@purwantiallan5089🤣😅🤣🤦♂️
looks a lot like Toyotas new Rally2 Yaris debuting in Monte Carlo in 10 days. This looks a lot like a less agressive street version of that. And it uses a highlty tuned version of this same engine unlike the Rally1 missile!
I think it's better to upgrade to the New 2024 facelift GR Yaris than to spend 10k on these upgrades.
This one is quicker though; has better seats, exhaust, etc.
I mean, if you like the new interior, sure. You'd still need an aftermarket exhaust though and for about 2,5k in parts for the old one (lowering the factory seats+ exhaust + mirror riser) you're all set.
Hey Matt, the GR years did go rallying and is currently in the WRC.
It's not the same though it was originally gonna be based on the road car with the same 3 cylinder engine but just turned up with bigger turbo etc now because of COVID and then the wrc rules changed it wasn't able to compete in that form and has 4 cylinder hybrid power unit now
@@sbrader97 yes, but they did manage to homologate the body that was their main goal for aerodynamics.
I love that car, drives wonderfully as is. I live in Suisse Normande and every road is like a rally stage so the higher ride height is actually a benefit... especially in the snow...In Short, I reckon that rear spoiler is a must,as is the Akram exhaust and engine upgrades, but I would leave it there lads.
I'm aware that Toyota Gazoo Racing are working on a hotter, track focussed GR Yaris. So it will be interesting to see what queues they take from the aftermarket performance market when it lands.
Really a very cool car
I don't care for the cheap looking frp bodykit and spoiler. You can see the fiberglass weave through the paint.
it really is rude this 2 door hatchy isn't sold here in the NA market. Ugh! Wanting one just like that! Sick whip brov!
Drag race vs the standard car surely!
Perfect aside from the fact it overheats on track.
Diffuser that is sloping down (instead up - expanding ) and no wheel vents, eq length headers?
That bodykit don't look good at all imo. Much more prefer the stock look.
My biggest issue with the gr Yaris is the front door line to the a pillar
Aa yes the rabbit hole that’s hot hatch ownership 😅,,do the engine tune and the suspension, nothing else imo
i love this car. at this moment i own a renault megane rs 4 trophy. im very interested in the new yaris gr. i cant decide to sell the megane and buy the new yaris or just keep the megane. cant decide.
Honestly think the seat is the best change. Going to totally change the drving feel and overall experience.
There is also mod for normal seats to get them lower
I'm cursed with a long body and short legs, and I'm yet to sit in my friend's car. If it is high for a long-legged bloke, it's possible that my head would be skimming the head-lining in the standard set-up. So, I imagine that I definitely would need a lower seat, otherwise I would be looking out through the bit of screen ABOVE the rear view mirror...
@@jonathanpalmer155 but you dont own a gr Yaris lol

Yeah I watched a video with a Spanish guy driving the Evolved one on track, and you can hear the engine sounds better and spins up much faster.
Just wondering what you get as an option on a Porsche for 10K these days...this makeover doesn't seem so bad really.
The new gr yaris is actuallt perfect. They fixed what they got wrong the first time, by listening to the people. W toyota
Just go for what you desire, exhaust, intake, seats, etc. All these mods are really good but just seems like one of those brands that overcharge customers because they know their customers can afford their mods.
I don’t like the look of the factory GR but that looks awesome, with the colour spoiler and body kit
The only thing worth buying is the akrapovic exhaust. My god that sound is addicting, you feel that you are driving a rally car.
