But which will come out on top - the 1.6-litre turbo powered Toyota GR Yaris, which can produce 261hp & 360Nm? Or perhaps the Civic Type R, which has a 2-litre turbo which will put down 320hp & 400Nm? Or maybe it’ll be the most powerful car here, the A45 S, which despite only having a 2-litre turbo, can produce a HUGE 421hp and 500Nm!

Scores need to be personalised - Matt weighted every category evenly. The Yaris is a great little car but it is tiny - no one with kids / friends could live with the car on a daily basis. Visibility is terrible with the A Pillars, Infotainment rear mirror. Manual box is very very notchy, and you need to take an UBER from the break pedal to the accelerator - so no heel an toe like the Type R. Maybe owners are hoping the GR will follow the increase in value of the Lancia HF Delta Integrales / Impreza 22B ? Buy those cars actually competed and won WRC championships. The Yaris never will. Bang for buck Type R has to be 1st.
The Yaris is horid inside and out dunno how you can justify a hot hatch winner with something you wouldnt be seen dead in lol.. AMG A45 by far the best..for 50grand it better be though! For 30grand I certainly wouldnt be buying a Yaris id just get a regular Merc A Class hah.

The fact that the civic can do 5.6 0-60 with that much wheel spin shows you how much acceleration it has.
I was quite impressed that Mat was able to pull that off in the Civic Type R with front-wheel drive. The wheel spin doesn't help, but hey, anything is possible :D
Mat needs to let the audience know Type R's are "never" meant for straight line speed. The sole reason for Type R's are the corning speed it can maintain, the reason why its a top performer for track test and Nurburgrin FWD time.
@@wanglee21 Yeah the Civic Type R is a perfect track car that can handle corners well and is an all-around amazing performer. It isn't meant for straight line acceleration, like the Nissan GT-R, Porsche 911 Turbo S, etc, but for what he did, it was pretty impressive. And even the current Type R that'll come out soon did a 2:23 time at Suzuka Curcuit I believe when Honda released that video of the upcoming Civic Type R.
@@wanglee21 There is no such thing as a sports car not meant to be fast on a straight line but on the corners. Most cars around 300bhp can do around 5 and a half seconds to 100kphh. Its just Honda makes better manuals than most other brands, as shifts are really short, certainly 'faster' than the Hyundai DCT double wet clutch. A really good manual driver shouldn't be spinning the wheels. Rather, he should be holding the clutch and throttle simultaneously while the car is not moving but revving and then suddenly release the clutch. That way, the car flies straight away from the get go.

Instead of just the amount of difference in seconds for 0-60, I would do what percentage it took off. A gain from 3.9 to 3.79 is pretty significant

To be fair, Type R is hard to launch because of the power it puts at the front tires, as it is evident when watching Matt's attempts. People with experience launching this car can get 5.3secs or around that on near-perfect launches. Type R LE can do 4.9secs in same conditions.
@@comradedog3662 how would that be fair? the merc has almost 160 more hp and 140 nm than the yaris and almost 100 hp and nm more than the civic AND it has AWD whereas the civic is FWD... and also considering the price difference of almost £20,000, I dont think raw 0-60 would be fair at all...

Great content, really enjoyed it! The Mercedes is epic and looks fantastic but rules itself out to a lot of people who are looking at hot hatches - at over £50,000 you would definitely look at other cars available - l would swop my Fiesta ST in for the Yaris - l see that as a far tricker (is that a word 😂) version of the Fiesta and the Honda isn’t for me but lm sure great on a track 👍
Not if you want the “World’s most powerful production 4 cylinder.” I have the Merc and love it! It’s great as a daily driver but is a bit of a sleeper in all black. Fun car.

I must have a GR Yaris. It's the car I dreamed of when I was a teenager in the 80's, while driving various small cars fast on twisty country roads. I had a '75 Celica GT, followed by an '80 Scirocco. My best friend had an '86 Civic Si, among other things. I thought at the time the best possible car would be an Audi Quattro Sport. I feel like this Yaris brings the spirit of that Audi homologation special to life in an attainable form.
If you went by cost per features the GR is much, much better. If you go by Mileage per kilometre the GR is best. If you go by snow and ice performance the GR is best. The GR is almost like the Lotus Cortina back in the day. Faster, handles better and can beat other cars through cornering. At one point in time in the USA I had seven Cortina's with two that were Lotus. I would love to have one GR Yaris, even though I am now 68 years old I still love twisty roads going fast.

Probably one of the best car reviews and comparisons I have seen.
Love this video. One question, I did't notice a cost of ownership category that would be a combination of fuel efficiency, average maintenance cost, and insurance rates. I know for a hot hatch fuel economy is a big difference in daily drivers. I think this category would give a more rounded view of the cars.

Civic is way more fun to drive than the Yaris. Having driven both, there’s one clear choice between the two. Every journalist has got hung up on 4WD and “homologation special”, completely overstating how good the Yaris is

I agree~ I think each car has its best characteristics like we've seen in this video. For example, the A45 with the interior, the Civic Type R for its practicality, the GR Yaris for its nimbleness and cool design, etc. They all have their characteristics that make them good cars for different people.

@@berryzie7544 Because the point of this drag race is not to see which is the quicker car in a straight line. We all know it's the amg. If the Manufacturer claims 5.5 sec for the Yaris and Mercedes claims 3.9 (and knowing the cars) you go in knowing that it's quicker
@@berryzie7544 Mat explained it well. The amg is a very good car that feels very mechanical because of all the systems helping you. The Yaris is a "real" car with it being manual, with a hand brake. And at the end of the day you cannot forget that the amg costs 20k more, which also affects decisions. For 20k I could get a good used 2nd car to add to my garage
Would the manual cars still have a soft limiter if you put it into first gear without releasing the clutch and then rev it?

So he managed to drive the record-holding track car slowest around a track :D
It only holds records nobody else has attempted. Nobody has ever been around the 'Ring in a production car in a time anywhere near the one claimed by Hondas prototype on special tyres with a roll cage.
Having driven the Civic I think that makes sense. It's not an easy car to get the maximum out of. Also honestly the 'Ring time is...well it's not a lie but they must have had utterly ideal conditions and a perfect lap. It's 15 secs quicker than my 981 Cayman S...but around a bunch of other 2 minute laps like Laguna Seca the 981 is 3-5 secs faster on average. I tested the Civic before buying the 981 and in the hands of a non-pro driver like myself the 981 is on a totally different level. I suspect without a bunch of practice I'd be a good 30s quicker round the 'Ring in the Porsche. The Civic is rewarding when you get it right though, so this can all be a positive thing.

Well, starting from 0 mph, and if we use 0-60, the Type R is already losing maybe 2 seconds to the AMG. IMO, Should’ve been a hot lap.

GR Yaris. I've got one and I've also got four other cars: BMW 50i, 335i, Giulietta QV and Fiesta ST. They are all awesome in their own way but I find myself driving the GR Yaris more because every drive is an occasion and you can have ridiculous fun without as Mat says "going straight to jail." Plus everyone comments on the GR Yaris which is cool.
In my opinion the type r is one of the best looking cars I've seen

Hi Mat Well done ! You’re right to have picked the Yaris GR I’ve just taken delivery of mine and, as you say, it’s epic! I’ve had lots of sports and competition cars and driven Curborough many times. I even had the outright double lap record for a while… Anyway, enough of the pomposity… The Yaris is such an engaging little car - it’s got such sweet handling, really balanced and great feedback. The engine is surprisingly sweet and, as a daily driver, I have found that it’s really easy to use. Being an old fart, who had a Mark 1 Golf GTi first time around, this GR has the same appeal. Sporty with useability. In your comparison, the Merc is fabulous, but it’s so much more expensive and, with that power, it should be quicker. The Civic is great, every respect to it, but it’s a bit too obvious for me. In my time, I have had the obligatory Impreza and a 470bhp Evo, but each of these stood out and shouted their presence far too much. Embarrassing sometimes. The GR doesn’t. It sounds like a diesel to anyone outside… but plays a mighty tune in the cabin! I agree with you; it’s a watershed moment in car building. One that is unlikely to be repeated. I feel very fortunate to have one. For anyone on the cusp… just ******* buy it. You won’t regret it! All the best Steve

Very much looking forward to the GR Corolla. Especially since we can actually buy one here in the states. More power and torque with the same great engine and AWD system. Thing should be a weapon.

@@danieljakobsen1289 The only thing the Yaris wins in is price. This was a biased competition that was good for half an hours worth of entertainment. Objectively, the Merc blows the Yaris (and every other "hot hatch") out of the water. If money wasn't a factor, there aren't many sane people who would pick the Yaris over the Merc.

MAT! We’ve got a GR aswell and there is a trick with the soft limiter: Turn off Stability control completely. The limiter is then disabled!🤩

I think the Yaris had some trouble going to 60 cause you made a gearchange everytime just before 60, maybe you would have hit the rev limited otherwise but anyway :)

It looks much better than the toyota, which looks like a regular yaris but with curves, or the mercedes which...looks like a normal mercedes with its back cut off...like a classic old man car my 60 year old stepdad used to drive and love...rip. The civic is the only car that isnt dull and lolks like a sportscar you can go straight to tokyo and do drifts among your peers.

Yea, why not spent 34k on Yaris - so unpractical....like...when you have a girlfriend and she says ... "Why you have space for 3 chichens at the back..." thats Lame... The Merc is ... 53k almost....Fuel Unefficient, Unpractical in any mean of the word and....Its automatic.... Civic is cool, is cheaper, its very practical so when you go on holiday you fill your truck and you are still The Rocket on The motorway... So Carwow, guys.... 34 minutes video to prove that your feedback is very wrong
