The best new AWD hot hatch you can buy right now - Golf R vs. Litchfield GR Yaris

Volkswagen's new Golf R is more agile and playful than its predecessor, while still being an all round champ. We love it, but is there a more exciting way to spend less than £40k? Step forward Litchfield's tuned GR Yaris, which gets boosted to 302hp, a honed chassis and lower bucket seats. It's a tantalising proposition, meaning Dan's got a tricky decision on his hands...

To all the GR Yaris owners out there, never sell them, they will never make a car like this again. Oh and I hate you lol
Spent more money on a slower car with less storage and the yaris will cost more in repairs seems like a smart move to me LOL

@@ericmarshall9262 I think you never heard about Golf service cost. Yaris is like your regular car. Golf on the other hand..

Have u driven one they’re not that great tbh. Still awesome Toyota made it though..
I can see why you (all) like the Yaris but people buy Golf R's because they want/need a fun daily car with rear doors and a boot. In which case the Yaris is not even an option, so probably not much cross-shopping between these two
I think the video is just demonstrating the difference between a lightly warmed over boring car, and a truly exciting, fun, homologation special. It is a shame that cars like the Golf have failed to acheive a concept that was pretty much already nailed 20 years ago by things like Evos and WRXs.
I see the Golf R as a compromised hot hatch because it has tried to offer all of what you mentioned whereas the GRY has no compromises and it's up to the owner to make the compromises to make it work as a daily. I'm happy with the sacrifices I have to make in order to enjoy the GRY daily.
Also bear in mind that most people who comment on here have never driven either car. On Dan’s remit I have no doubt, as a drivers car, the GR seems universally the best (I haven’t driven one) - manual gearbox, purpose built...but as a daily the Golf R all day long (which I do own) - more space, plenty fun for a commute, comfortable, and launch control never gets old 🤣
Golf R is not a fun daily car though, no car can be fun and daily.... it's an oxymoron. You are arguing for a jack of all trades, and that is why people still buy an MX5 to get away from that A to B side....
@@zakelwe What we’re saying here is living with the compromises... the GR is too small for my needs....would love a go in one for sure... An MX5 is an even greater compromise....It’s probably why James on TH owns an S4 and an MX5 I guess. But people who say a Golf R isn’t a fun daily 🥱 have probably never driven one 😒
It's seems Toyota is getting back to making fun and affordable cars. Great review.

Thanks Dan. As always, another top review!
I’ve got a GR and my son has a golf 7.5 he drove my GR and was blown away at the grip the feel and and speed, what people don’t understand is usability the GR usability in all weathers and conditions is astounding, a golf R would struggle to keep up, it’s not about drag races or top speeds anymore it’s about driving the thing!
Totally agree on that.. i bet driving the car with 6mt is far more involving the driving.. hence more fun...
Awesome! As an X Daihatsu Charade GTti owner and having had a couple of Golf R's as demo cars this was an exciting video to watch. Great content 💪💪💪
Great video guys, thanks 🙏🏼
Another superb video Dan, thanks so much. Would be interested in comparison of the Yaris against your Alpine A110? Very different cars for sure, Alpine only a bit more expensive, but which is more fun and engaging?
They are very different, but they appeal to the same people, I think.
Big fan of the Golf, but this Yaris is something special. It stands out and we likely won’t be getting one like this again. I guess it depends on what you’re after, but I’d love both. Yaris will also be worth more down the line and it’s kinda like the 911 Gt3 of the Toyota lineup. I’d take one over a supra.
I owned one of the early Supras.I had early serious rust problems
Why like GT3?
@@1anre they’re both homologation cars, they are both more special than anything else in the current lineup. The gt3 has one hell of an engine and one you’re not going to find anywhere else, save for the gt4rs, also a homologation car. The Yaris has an awesome inline 3 that you also won’t find in any other cars. They both aren’t made for straight line speed, but do well in that regard. More importantly, they offer feedback and communication to the driver that most other cars don’t. These are special cars
@@PapiAndrey ah I got it. For $40K which other brand new cars do you think one can consider in this bracket ?
@@1anre do you mean in the case of homologation cars? Or do you mean similar cars in the sense that they give the driver feedback and communication? That’s mainly what I was referring to. The Yargis GR some other cars like the 400z and older cars like the E92 M3 give you that feedback and connection that most other new cars done give you. It makes you feel connected to the car like you’re the one making the power and moving the car. That connection makes you feel like you’re the one in control and you have a much better time than a car that’s numb like many new BMW’s.
How does the suspension on the Litchfield compared to the Ford Focus RS? I had an RS for 8 months and had to get rid of it because the suspension was way too firm.
He's absolutely right. The Yaris is no fun driven slowly. When I am having fun on public roads I usually find myself driving in the middle of the night, no traffic, way above the speed limit on curvy country roads here in germany, or drifting up serpentines. It is just too grippy and stable. Driving fast on the Autobahn is a bit of fun, but it isn't where this car really shines.
CARWOW tested the mk8 Golf R 1/4 mile at 12.3 and thus tuned Yaris @ 12.9. So the mk8 R is 0.6 seconds quicker in the qtr mile.

Pretty sure it's legal in the UK if the seatbelts still work with the seat, you just take the risk that if you crash the airbags won't be there. Also I think Corbeau makes a heated version.
Will you guys be reviewing the Cupra Leon anytime soon? The 300hp one preferably.
The road looks amazing where is that in wales?
Anyone know what model those Corbeau seats are?
The GR Yaris sounds amazing! That's a ton of HP per cylinder @ 100 hp per cylinder! Too bad it's not coming to America but apparently some form of Gazoo racing Corolla will debut in the US.

Superb video Dan. Great to know the Litchfield package is a winner.
Are there other tuners that’ve done the upgrades as well as Litchfield?

Not present here, but they can also do a Milltek resonated and non resonated systems with the map to take account of them. I'll be running mine stock for a while before heading down to Gloucestershire.
why would you want lower mounted seats in the Yaris? Is visibility not cool? Better to have the beltline and dash at eye level to look cool and lower your center of gravity?
As fast as a Carrera S...must be proven ;)
Depends on the road and driver. Most people buying a Yaris GR will be younger and prepared to spank it, the older Porsche blue rinse brigade less so. When you get older you get more money, but then slow down driving wise. I know from experience.
Its not, the guy who posted the video is on crack, a golf R is 1.3 sec faster then the 5.3 second yaris, buddy is just blowing smoke out his ass and the noncar guys are eating it up

So, I have a GTI and want a second car as the fun car. Would the GR Yaris or the GR86 will be an amazing car? I am not a Toyata fan in particular, but I just want a sports car that has plenty of option for aftermarket parts, and a hand brake for motor sports. Hope anyone is kind enough to asnwer my question lol.
I know I’m 8 months late but I’d take the Yaris over a 86 without batting an eye. Sure the 86 is fun in the corners and all but you have to bag the piss out of it and they’re still quite slow, especially compared to your GTI. I think you’d be disappointed in the GR86, the Yaris is just a better car. Still amazing in the corners, faster in the straights, a really nice manual gearbox and far more unique. And now with the GR Corolla being released within the year here I think we’ll be seeing much more aftermarket for these cars
Good stuff 👍

But very linear and not aggressive. The very quick response of the turbo of the Yaris is another story. I had the Yaris for 1 day and after 1h or so I drove 160 MPH on the very rainy Autobahn. The stiff chasis, AWD etc makes the car extremly controllable and boosts your confidance. I drove around 10min on the Autobahn and entered back roads to enjoy the movability of the car. They're both great AWD Hot Hatchbacks, but I'll stick with my Mk3 Focus RS,.. It didn't cost 40k and it'll out perform both of these 'new' cars reviewed, even in stock form. It has all the practicality of the Golf and easily matches the Yaris in the track/handling department. But if I were to pick one to buy,.. My driver purist heart would go for the Yaris while my practical and cost beneficial head would go for the Golf. ... But as for most in such a position, it would be what Mrs Red thinks which would be the determining factor.
😂😂😂😂No it won't, I've owned a mk3 focus rs & it's the biggest load of over hype in the car industry Cheap nasty plastic interior & ride quality of a 1940's tractor, It sounds amazing but appart from that it's shit
@@pauldavies7251 Build quality...Well, It's a Ford (A German built Ford, but still a Ford..), that's why it was under 40k,, and though I'll grant you the 16 & 17 models were over damped, the V3 update on 2018 + RSs was a great improvement. Though my RS is quite heavily modified now, I very rarely had any Golfs that could stay with me around the track even before I tuned it. It was much better than the Golf R I ran prior, though like you say the VW build quality was better. I'm sorry to hear you didn't like your RS, maybe it had some underlying issues that were effecting its handling/performance or you were unfortunate to have one of the early models with the overdamped suspension, I've been really impressed with mine,.. Around most tracks it's almost as good as my M2 to drive and loves to be put on the edge without too much drama to get it back if I push too hard and it snatches, in the wet even my M2 can't get close to it. Although I could set similar times in my Golf R (which was a stage 2, big brake kit etc.. ), when I first drove an RS around Croft, I instantly felt how the RS was just much more focused, playful and willing to do what I asked of it, especially under hard corner entries where my Golf would start to wash out and understeer even with all the aids set to off, the Focus just keeps turning in and since I fitted a LSD it very rarely gets out of shape when getting hard on the power out of the corner like it could do in stock form. I don't know about the hype for the RS because I weren't looking to buy one when they first came out, BMW M cars have always been my go to cars, I only bought the RS after my younger brother creamed my M2 around croft in the wet while driving his new RS, and with living in the UK where it rains a lot I wanted something I could access more of the power and performance more of the time, after driving his RS I seriously impressed and after I managed to haggle a excellent deal I bought one and I have truly enjoyed owning and driving it since.. But I know that the pre 2018 RSs had a recall problem and a few other issues, but fortunately I've not had issues that weren't a quick fix on my 18 RS. And my wife loves it, she's been using it as her daily for a few years now, I got offered a great deal to put her in the Merc A45 AMG but, she wants to keep the RS, which is frustrating because I would have liked to run the A45 for a while but,.. She's comfortable with it and I can't really blame her, it has been a great car for us to own.
It wouldn’t. End of.
@@gaycha6589 LOL, Stamps feet.. Waves tantrumed arms in the air and takes the time out their day just to enter a post which basically says.. "Na ha!.. You're wrong! Because... Because, well because 'I' say so! End of!"... Is what your response is expressing my emotionally privileged young friend. However, If you actually have some constructive criticism and/or personal experience of the above mentioned vehicles which stand contrary to my own, then I'd be more than happy to hear what they are, but if all you have is a juveniled response like the above then it's clear that you have neither experience or constructive criticism, and other than displaying the fact that you have an untrained ego, behave like spoiled child and live with emotional outburst issues... You'll have nothing of interest or benefit to add to this subject matter and will just make yourself look childish and silly to anyone reading whom isn't so emotionally impaired as yourself, no(?!)
I guess I have to vote for the VW since...I can actually purchase one.
Just mentioning 911 in a GR Yaris is sacrilegious, but I do get it.
The Yaris makes me excited for the Corolla GR here in the USA. Still getting the Golf R regardless though. Just way more heritage and experience.
Lol
a45s anybody?
The Golf disqualifies itself with that woeful touchscreen disguised as the driver interface.
i am a pure VW head , but i would go for the yaris GR
