The 2023 Volkswagen Golf R and the Toyota GR Corolla Morizo edition cost about the same. One is a straight A student the other a wild child. Which one do I buy?

And yes, I drove my friends Mk8 for a week, and I can tell you that it was a relief to get back in my 2011 Corolla because I could change the temperature, volume, and fan speed while driving with zero looking down or thinking.

  • I'd probably go with the GR corolla.. that rally design really speaks to me, but it also means it has rally characteristics. For example, the handbrake is the good old fashioned way, much more fun than an electric one. And there will probably be more differences. Tho, I have to say, I really dislike japanese interiors.

  • I’d choose the R, (I own a 22 R) but hear me out. I’m really glad the GRC exists. I cannot wait for Mk8 R, GRC, CTR, EN, and WRX content to come out. Time attacks, auto cross, drag racing, u drags, you name it. It’s going to be be awesome and I think they all fit a niche for a certain type of person. With that said, my thoughts on the GRC vs the R. The GRC is enthusiast and rally derived. The front/rear split settings really let you have some fun with the car and ensure it’ll definitely be more oversteer happy than the R (not that you can’t slide the R around though! The TV rear diff is outstanding). I’m betting the GRC will likely be more engaging and act like a hooligan if you want it to. It might be more fun in that sense. I don’t know if it’ll be better on a track. The CTR is like the track king however the 8R is VERY close in Nurburgring times. It’s like 4s off on nearly 8 minutes so. Now the Golf is going to have more straight line speed. It’s also going to be much faster tune for tune. The interior on it is far nicer. It comes with many more features like HUD, heated front and rear seats, ventilated seats, heated wheel, ambient lighting, wireless charging and car play, 15 dampen settings with DCC, etc. The materials and finish will feel much more upscale and the Audio will be better as well. It will undoubtedly be the better car in day to day driving. More comfortable, quiet, refined. That’s kind of it’s thing though. Less play, more serious. It’s mighty capable but doesn’t always feel like it is. The GRC will be the better driver’s car. The Golf will be the better commuter and “street car” if you dig and roll race a lot. Both great and again, I cannot wait until content comes out. But I definitely think the cars appeal to different people.

Exactly right, ppl that are surprised, or stand on the fact that the type R is better on a track……like duhh, same segment of cars…..but totally different approaches. Take both cars on gravel or loose surfaces…..should I be surprised that the grc does better? Like you said, different use cases for all of them. Where I live, weather, broken roads etc……the grc serves my needs, and appeals to me more. Being an r8 owner, I am a fan/owner of vag ……but the R would be my last choice here.

I also like the "sleeper" aspect of the car since you wont know its a real performer. I think the GR is a "cooler" car, but its a little show-offy for me, and appeals to a younger buyer. • 10:26 it’s funny you say that, cause a lot of people are straight up pulling the shifter off on their GTI/Golf Rs while shifting due to it being made out of plastic. VW has perfected the “looks like quality” motif where their interiors look good, but as soon as you start touching things you realize how bad the cost cutting really was.

This is one of the most exciting packages to come out in ages. Watch some GR Yaris content, that thing is crazy. As far as I'm concerned, this thing is the closest we will get to a modern Impreza 22B in modern times

There’s absolutely zero reason to need AWD unless you live in AK lol. Winter tires will get you everywhere you need it on FWD or RWD vehicles.

There are plenty of people who went stage 2 from the get go and got over 100k miles trouble free. • Come on be honest to people there almost no chance for average person to buy this GR Corolla. Simple reasons you will never be able to get 2023 GR Corolla there only making 6500 of them all hand made. So of those 1500 GR Carollas are sold as Morismo editions this Spring they are already sold. As for other 5k others about 3500 will be this year's core Editions they are releasing this fall and each dealer will only get 2 core Editions so we are already seeing dealership employees/ owners preparing to buy them. So expect a 50k GR Carolla core base model that will be if you can find the hand few ones that can be purchased. As for 1500 Circuit Editions they come next spring only 1 per dealer in some places and most of them are taken. So good luck everyone who wants it.

That little corolla gives me the largest grin when i step on it in 1st through 3rd gear and let the Lift do the talking. Now if toyota wants to build a new sporty corolla, fewer cylinders and smaller displacement with a turbo and rawer exhaust, 108 more horsepower and a Rally style AWD system with a fucking wheel that lets me set the power distribution and an analogue handbrake? • From a design standpoint, the Golf, no question. The Corolla looks like an economy hatchback trying its best to look like a sportscar. From a mechanical standpoint... still the Golf, no question. It's a hot hatch of its time and the right blend of usability and performance. The Corolla is a car that wants you to believe it's built for the enthusiast but is compromised (it's just a big Yaris for America). Manual in 2022 is not the same as manual in 1992, people are moving away from those even in Europe.
